hua hin, THAILAND Last Friday saw the grand opening of the True Arena just south of the town to the west of the flyover, and for a town the size of Hua Hin to have such a superb facility, arguably the best in Thailand, is nothing short of amazing.

The complex boasts two full size training football (soccer) pitches, a clubhouse containing a huge gym with the most up to date equipment available, a Centre Court tennis arena capable of holding 5000 spectators, 16 other tennis courts, an indoor multi-sport complex which can be converted to one basketball or volleyball court, a futsal field, four badminton courts and more, plus jogging track, rooftop swimming pool, as well as first aid, banqueting and conference facilities. There are also bar and restaurant outlets on the complex.

The grand opening featured a number of activities, with the highlight being a tennis clinic conducted by the three most famous Thai tennis players of recent years - Paradorn Srichipan, Tamarine Thanasukarn and Danai Udomchoke, who have all competed at the highest level, but spent several hours with children as young as four teaching them how to play tennis.

Other activities included showpiece football matches and a demonstration by a rugby team, and in the evening was a performance by artists from AF and ‘The Voice Thailand’, with speeches and presentations by a number of executives of the Proud Corporation, the company behind the complex, and sponsors True Corporation and Thai Beverage PLC, and the former Deputy Prime Minister, His Excellency Suwat Liptapanlop.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated.

This week it is..... Cut to the chase Get to the point - leaving out unnecessary preamble.

This phrase originated in the US film industry. Many early silent films ended in chase sequences preceded by obligatory romantic storylines. The first reference to it dates back to that era, just after the first ‘talkie’ - The Jazz Singer, 1927. It is a script direction from Joseph Patrick McEvoy’s novel Hollywood Girl, 1929: “Jannings escapes... Cut to chase.”

There’s quite a distance from a single citation in a script direction to a phrase that is part of the language. It doesn’t appear again in print for some years and we can be fairly sure that McEvoy wasn’t the source of the figurative use of the phrase as we now know it. That figurative use, that is, the generalized ‘get to the point’ meaning emerged in the 1940s. The Winnipeg Free Press, March 1944 ran an article about screen writing that included this: Miss [Helen] Deutsch has another motto, which had to do with the writing of cinematic drama. It also is on the wall where she cant miss seeing it, and it says: “When in doubt, cut to the chase.”

That does imply getting to the point but isn’t quite the current meaning as it relates specifically to film chases.

The more general usage comes soon afterwards, for example, in this piece from the New England newspaper The Berkshire Evening Eagle, February 1947: “Let’s cut to the chase. There will be no tax relief this year.”

The precept as it applies to films is as prevalent now as it was in the silent film days. Many, in fact it is not too

strong to say most, films aimed at a young male audience involve plot devices that allow for car/boat/spacecraft chases. There is usually a token love interest storyline before everything in sight ends up in pieces.

There is a similar phrase ‘cut to Hecuba’, which is reported by Michael Warwick in ‘Theatrical Jargon of the Old Days’, a piece in an October 1968 edition of Stage. Warwick explains the phrase as a “relic from Shakespeare and was an artifice employed by many old producers to shorten matinees by cutting out long speeches”. The allusion is to a speech in which Hamlet refers to Hecuba, which appears late on in Act 2 of Shakespeare’s play. Warwick doesn’t include any evidence to prove the existence of the phrase prior to 1968 though and it is hardly a part of everyday language.

There’s also nothing to link ‘cut to Hecuba’ with ‘cut to the chase’.

Dave asked her, “Your Majesty, how do you run Buckingham Palace so efficiently? Is there any advice you can give to me now that my government is falling to pieces?”

“Well,” said the Queen, “the most important thing is to surround yourself with intelligent people.” Dave frowned, and asked, “But how do I know the people around me are really intelligent?”

The Queen took a sip of tea. “Oh, that’s easy; you just ask them to prove their intelligence by answering a simple riddle.” She pushed a button on her intercom. “Please find Nigel Farage and send him here, would you?”

After a little while Nigel walked into the room and said, “Yes, Your Majesty?”

and back Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas statuesque Note to self - must stop watching disaster movies. Not only do they keep you awake at night, but they all have one thing in common. The Statue of Liberty survives nearly every time. Often just the top of it sticking out of the ice/rubble/water/ash (along with a couple of wrecked ships for effect.) Sometimes leaning at a perilous angle.

But as long as she is still holding aloft her flaming torch we are assured that everything will be OK again after a bit of a clean up.

Back to reality, and a Happy Easter to all our readers.

This week we take a look at Hulls’ answer to the Statue of Liberty - the Wilberforce monument.

Hull lad William Wilberforce was born in 1759, and by the age of 21 had become a Member of Parliament for the city. He served as an MP from 1780 to 1812, but his real claim to fame was in being instrumental in campaigning for the abolition of slavery. He was credited as the driving force in bringing about the Slave Trade Act of 1807, which was passed by Parliament on March 25th of that year, abolishing slavery in Britain. However the 1807 Act failed to legislate for the freeing of existing slaves.

It would be another 24 years before his lifetimes work reached it’s full fruition, when in 1833 the Slavery Abolition Act granted freedom to all slaves in the British Empire. Just a few days later Wilberforce died.

His monument was erected in 1835. Standing on top of a boring doric column it isn’t a patch on the Statue of Liberty, but the two statues do have one thing in common, they both symbolise freedom. Unfortunately 180 years on freedom is still a dream in many countries.

Of course we know all about the exploitation of migrant workers, which happens in Britain, South East Asia, and probably most other places, with employers demanding long hours for illegally low pay. A modern day form of

slavery. But the criminal intelligence agency Europol believes that many of the estimated 10,000 refugee children missing in Europe since that migrant crisis began have been sold, or are being exploited in other ways.

The thought of thousands of children missing and at risk, or worse, in Europe in 2016 somehow puts the problem of Thailands’ flower sellers into a little more perspective doesn’t it?

And as you tuck into your roast lamb, with those Easter eggs to follow, spare a thought for yours truly - trudging across the Humber Bridge dressed as Eeyore, and raising a few quid for charity. England Euro16 kit launch includes photo of team in tears england THE England shirt for Euro 2016 has been unveiled with a photo-shoot of the players crying.

Rather than having the squad look menacing, Nike presented Wayne Rooney weeping into Joe Hart’s chest as Josh Onomah wipes away a tear while sitting on a bench.
