down in the dumps residents kick up stink over town dump hua hin, THAILAND Compared to many places in Thailand, Hua Hin is kept reasonably clean and litter free, and this is mostly down to the sterling work done every night by the town’s refuse collection services. However, as the town has grown, so has the amount of garbage needing disposal of, and this week, residents living near the main town dump blocked the entrance to the 600 rai site in Tambon Tab Tai, demanding that an alternative site be used, and the existing mountain of trash be cleaned up. The road was blocked by the residents around 2pm on Tuesday, and a four hour standoff was finally broken when Hua Hin municipal officials agreed to stop dumping new trash at the site and allow the Tambon Tab Tai Administrative Organisation and its residents to take part in planning the elimination of the existing pile of garbage. Chumpon Taklom, president of the Tab Tai TAO, said sub-district council had resolved three months ago that the landfill should be closed. Protesters said they had put up with the stench from the gigantic mountain of trash, as well as other problems, since the dump opened 22 years ago. Many complained that putrid liquid seeps into natural water sources, contaminating their crops, and was worse during rainy periods. Pailin Kongpan, deputy mayor for Hua Hin municipality, said the city would dump 150 tonnes of its daily waste at a site behind Thanarat Infantry Camp in Pran Buri district, but explained that as this facility was only open during office hours and was located further from the city, this would cause some problems given that the refuse was collected during the night, and may mean some areas would not have their garbage collected as often as now.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Kangaroo court An unauthorized, bogus court. Kangaroo courts are sham legal proceedings which are set-up in order to give the impression of a fair legal process. In fact, they offer no impartial justice as the verdict, invariably to the detriment of the accused, is decided in advance. Such courts are associated with groups who have found a need to dispense a rough and ready form of justice but are, temporarily at least, outside the bounds of formal judicial processes; for example, inmates in jail, soldiers at war, settlers of lands where no jurisdiction has yet been established. The origin of ‘kangaroo court’ is unknown, although, given that kangaroos are native nowhere else, we might expect the term to have originated in Australia. As always, a lack of a definite origin encourages speculative claims, which may be an appropriate word in this context as one frequently repeated supposed derivation relates to ‘claim jumping’ in the California Gold Rush - hence the allusion to kangaroos. That’s quite a plausible notion. Kangaroos and their claim to fame, so to speak, that is, jumping, were known in the USA by the early 1800s, so there’s no reason to limit the derivation to Australia. Also, the earliest known citation of the term is American and appears in a collection of magazine articles by Philip Paxton (the pen name of Samuel Adams Hammett), which were published in 1853 under the title of A stray Yankee in Texas: “By a unanimous vote, Judge G-- was elected to the bench and the ‘Mestang’ or ‘Kangaroo Court’ regularly organized.”
The natural inclination to want to base the phrase in Australia has led to suggestions that the vacant stares of kangaroos when meeting humans for the first time were mimicked by jury members in court. There’s no documentary evidence to support this, or any other Australian derivation, and it seems highly speculative. The claim jumping derivation though has the feel of a ‘trying to hard’ explanation that is the stamp of folk etymology. The supposed wordplay of linking kangaroos and jumping is appealing but isn’t really necessary to explain this phrase. Kangaroo courts were also called ‘mustang courts’ in the USA (see above). Allusions to the unsophisticated natures of wild animals are frequent in the metaphorical coinage of phrases that apply to things that are considered inferior or ersatz. We have dog Latin, dog’s breakfast, horse-faced and many others. It seems probable that the reference to mustangs (half-wild horses) and kangaroos came about by that same route.

cinderella Cinderella was now 95 years old. After a fulfilling life with the now-dead prince, she happily sat upon her rocking chair, watching the world go by from her front porch, with a cat named Bob for companionship. One sunny afternoon, out of nowhere, appeared the fairy godmother. Cinderella said, “Fairy Godmother, what are you doing here after all these years?” The fairy godmother replied, “Cinderella, you have lived an exemplary life since I last saw you. Is there anything for which your heart still yearns?” Cinderella was taken aback, overjoyed, and after some thoughtful consideration, she uttered her first wish: “The prince was wonderful, but not much of an investor. I’m living hand to mouth on my disability checks, and I wish I were wealthy beyond comprehension.” Instantly her rocking chair turned into solid gold. and back Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas mugging us off Today, April 1st, Starbucks begins a two month trial in the UK aimed at reducing the amount of paper cups it uses. No - this is not an April Fools joke. In fact the mega coffee chain has already been in the habit of giving a 25 pence discount to customers who provide their own cup, but just didn’t advertise the fact. Now they will be having a major publicity drive, and increasing the ‘own cup’ discount to 50 pence. Obviously this campaign is another step in efforts to reduce landfill waste as, like plastic carrier bags, disposable coffee cups are largely non re-cyclable. It also follows on from the highly successful pricing campaign to reduce carrier bag use in the UK, which began last October. But while we have got used to going equipped with our ‘bags for life’, it is somehow harder to imagine the Great British Public toting mugs around with them all the time just in case they fancy a frappo to go. Still, in big cities where hundreds of commuters need their daily pre office fix it could perhaps catch on. Which brings us to another tenuous link with April 1st, this time in 2014, when Red Rum was voted the greatest Grand National horse of all time in a study by Timeform publications. Red Rum of course holds the record for Grand National wins, and I was there at the first of his three on March 31st 1973. Jostling through the crowd for a close up view of my new hero as he made his way into the winners enclosure I was struck first by how fresh he looked after the race, and second by the alarming amount of broken glass from the bar which was littering the ground. Later the use of plastic ‘glasses’ for outdoor drinking in such places became law, and is now applied in any crowd situation or public place for safety reasons. Which despite their good intentions makes you wonder

After long debates last months’ UK Budget finally imposed a ‘sugar tax’ on soft drinks, a move which has already incited threats of legal action from one well know manufacturer of the fizzy stuff. True, childhood obesity is a problem, and tooth decay in children is hitting all time highs. But the sugar tax is inevitably seen as just an easy way to make more money. And strangely, given its’ new reputation as a dangerous substance, sugar is still classed as an essential foodstuff for the purpose of Value Added Tax (VAT) and is zero rated. Until that is it becomes part of another food product, such as a Starbucks venti grape hot mulled fruit drink, which contains a stunning 25 teaspoons of the white stuff. Still, at least you could now get 50 pence off it if you moved to the UK. A couple of weeks ago we looked at the ‘QT’, or quality tourist. If all goes to plan these QTs will soon be arriving in Thailand from Europe. But if you want to get ahead of the game and fancy a break on Koh Samui the Wowcher online discount site is offering 5 star luxury on the island for just £379 per person all inclusive, an (alleged) reduction of 82% from £2105. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
