coral fear rising sea temperatures threaten reefs
hua hin, THAILAND A senior marine biologist at the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, Nalinee Thongtham, has revealed that coral bleaching has been detected for the first time at Koh Talu and Koh Leum in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, with about 5% of the coral reef, mainly hump corals, affected. Increased sea temperatures, exceeding 30°C in places, are the cause, and the bleaching will expand if temperatures remain so high. Ms Nalinee said the strong influence of El Nino last year increased the temperature of seawater in the eastern Pacific, and after temperatures dropped there, the mass of warming water moved to the western Pacific, and this has been compounded by the hot summer being experienced now. Coral bleaching has been seen before in Thailand, in the years 1991, 1995, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2010, with the most severe being the most recent, when 66.9% of coral reefs in the northern Andaman Sea and 39% in the southern Andaman Sea died from bleaching. A decision will be taken at the end of April as to whether some coral reef sites will need to be closed to aid rehabilitation. There are 75,590 rai (approx. 121 million square metres) of coral reef in the Gulf of Thailand, of which 5% are considered to be in fertile condition and 73,364 rai (approx. 117 million sq. m) in the Andaman Sea with 6.4% in ideal condition. These numbers are under constant threat, not only from sea temperatures but also from the greater dangers of tourism and fishing related activities.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Blaze a trail To lead the way. When soldiers ‘blaze away’ with their weapons the blaze refers to the fire and smoke. This has been used since the late 18th century, as here from the Battle of Brooklyn, 1776:

“We bid them stand and blazed away like brave boys.”
The first actual usage of the precise phrase ‘blaze a trail’ that can be found is from the Montana newspaper The Helena Independent, November 1883:
The meaning we now give to ‘blaze a trail’ - of someone forging ahead and clearing a path for others, would tend to lead towards imagining blaze to mean burn, in the same way. Another allusion might be to someone charging ahead with such vigour that they leave a smouldering trail in their wake. Those aren’t the thoughts in the mind of those that coined this phrase though. A blaze is a notch or mark, like the blaze marks seen on horses’ faces. So, ‘to blaze a trail’ was to mark it out by notching trees so that others could follow. Trees are also often marked this way to single them out for felling. The use of blaze to mean the chipping off of a small piece of bark to mark a path or boundary is American in origin. That’s seen in these early citations. Dr. Thomas Walker’s Journal of Exploration [of Kentucky], 1750:
“A path tolerably distinct, which we made more so by blazing the trees.”
“The merchants thereupon, desirous of securing the trade of the new mines, offered the stranger $100 if he would blaze a trail through, and afterward it could be cleared sufficiently for pack animals to pass along.”

and back Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas model monarch Many first time visitors to Thailand could be forgiven for making certain assumptions about the Monarchy. Not least because of a certain 1950’s movie, but also because of the reverance in which His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej is held by his people. The images on currency and in pictures, along with those first glimpses of traditional Thai dress, conjure up thoughts of a fairy tale Royal Family who must surely live in the Grand Palace most of the time, much the same as our Queen Elizabeth lives in Buckingham Palace. And although there are some striking similarities between the two families, in many ways the reality is quite different. In June this year it will be 70 years since His Majesty acceded to the throne. He is the longest reigning head of state in the world, and by far the longest reigning Thai Monarch. Born in the US in 1927 His Majesty, like our Queen, grew up happily unaware of his destiny, but unlike the Queen he spent his early years in a fairly modest American home, while his father Prince Mahidol studied medicine and his mother Mom Sangwan became a nurse. Mom Sangwan had been a commoner, who Prince Mahidol had fought against tradition to marry. As with British royalty, marrying a commoner then was frowned upon, but with Thailand there was some good reason. For Siam, as it was, was anxious to retain it’s cultural and ethnic identity - what we would now call ‘Thainess’, and while British royals had a large pool of European royal families to marry into without too much damage, Thai royalty had become, for want of a better word, more ‘condensed’ over the years. Suitable Royal suitors were becoming scarce. As it turned out His Majesty’s background and upbringing must have stood him in good stead. As well as America,

the family also spent time living in Switzerland. His Majesty studied science, then political science, is multi lingual, a gifted artist and musician, and a champion yachtsman. But perhaps most importantly he gained an insight into how people in other countries lived, and when the time came was determined to help raise the standards and prospects of the poorest Thai people. In doing so his approach was radical for a Thai Monarch. His Majesty travelled to every part of his country, something none of his predecessors had done, and something which often alarmed his security guards. His aim was to provide his people with the opportunities many of them had never had - education, health care, sanitation, agricultural skills, vocational training enabling them to help themselves. Little wonder His Majesty is held in such respect to this day. But foreign relations haven’t been neglected either. King Bhumibol is said to have done more than any other Thai monarch to raise the profile and popularity of his country abroad during his state visits. He put Thailand on the world map for the right reasons, and could probably teach the British royals a thing or two. On April 8th 1952, in an attempt to avoid a strike, President Truman ordered the seizure of US steel mills. A situation had arisen because he had imposed wage and price controls on industries considered essential during the Korean War, which of course included steel. This made the Unions very unhappy. Trumans’ action was proved to be illegal and the steel workers strike went ahead anyway, getting pretty much what they had wanted in the first place after 53 days. You really have to wonder what Truman would have done with the UK steel industry. 15

Fixtures The season is over; however there are a number of matches outstanding so the champions are yet to be known. Kom Hom will be hosting the finals night of the leagues seasonal finals matches next Tuesday 12/4/16. The first match will be the Ladies singles final starting at 7:30, Oil from Jungle Juice will be playing Thip from Blue Lagoon 1. The second match will be the final of the Mickey Mouse competition. This match will be between Jungle Juice and Blue Lagoon 1. Both these matches will be best of 5 games. The final of the handicap doubles has been cancelled as 2 of the 4 players who have qualified are not available to play. It was therefore decided that the other 2 players be declared winners of this competition, so well done to Thip, and to Daniel from Johnny 56. On completion of these 2 matches the draw will be made for the first round of the Top 16 Competition, taking place the following Tuesday. The first 4 matches drawn will be held in Jungle Juice, the second 4 in Johnny 56 starting at 7:30. All matches at this stage will be best of 5. On completion of the first round, would all players then please proceed to Johnny 56 where the competition will be concluded.
