hua hin, THAILAND As the dust, or perhaps more appropriately, powder, settles on another Songkran festival, the country will be left counting the cost in lives lost and water wasted. While the actual number of deaths and injuries on the roads is yet to be fully known, as we are about to enter the second weekend of traffic chaos with people travelling back to their homes, on average, statistically, the numbers are generally not much greater than any week of the year when set against the number of vehicles on the road, and this year may be lower because of various measures taken, such as prohibiting the sale of alcohol on the main days of the festival.

One worrying local incident that reportedly occurred in the early hours of Wednesday 13th April was that gangs of young Thais planned and were attacking foreigners leaving the centre of town, with several people hospitalised as a result. If you were a victim of such an assault, or were witness to any, we advise that you report this to the Tourist or regular Police, as they will be keen to stamp out such behaviour but will require evidence and witnesses to do so.

From what we understand the attacks were random but specifically targeting foreigners, regardless of age or behaviour, and as far as we can ascertain there was no motivation other than harming those attacked, and so have to be seen as racist offences. What is more worrying still is that of the attacks we have heard about, the only bystanders who went in to help were other foreigners, who were then also attacked. Amongst all the good natured revelry of Songkran, this is a sad footnote to the Hua Hin fun. We are certain, though, that this is a mindless minority who will be equally condemned by the Thai community, the vast majority having shown a warm welcome and kind hearts to foreigners living and visiting here.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated.

This week it is..... The road to hell is paved with good intentions The intention to engage in good acts often fails. It points up the principle that there is no merit in good intentions unless they are acted on.

The origin of almost all proverbs is shrouded by the mists of time. Nevertheless, there is no shortage of claimants to the authorship of ‘The road to hell is paved with good intentions’.

The expression is often attributed to the Cistercian abbot Saint Bernard of Clairvaux (1090 – 1153).

This attribution was made by St Francis de Sales in Correspondence: Lettres d’Amitié Spirituelle (written in 1640 and printed in 1980). The de Sales version was ‘l’enfer est plein de bonnes volontés ou désirs’, which translates as ‘hell is full of good intentions and wishes’.

The five hundred year gap and the fact that the text isn’t found in the works of St Bernard suggests that we can discount Francis’s account.

And... just when you’ve waited five hundred years for one St. Bernard myth, along comes a second. St. Bernard rescue dogs don’t carry casks of brandy around their necks to give drinks to people who are stranded in snowdrifts. That idea comes from a painting by the popular Victorian painter Sir Edwin Landseer. His 1820 painting Alpine Mastiffs Reanimating a Distressed Traveller shows such a scene and the image entered the public consciousness. However, Landseer made it up, it never happened.

Back to the proverb. Early English versions don’t refer to the road to hell or suggest that such a road was paved,

but simply state that hell was filled with good intentions.

In more recent times there is always a mention of paving. This adaptation may have been influenced by Ecclesiasticus 21:10: The way of sinners is made plain with stones, but at the end thereof is the pit of hell.

The person who made the ‘paved’ version popular appears to have been James Boswell in The Life of Samuel Johnson LL.D.,1791, who is second favourite after Saint Bernard as the suggested author of this proverb: No saint, however, in the course of his religious warfare, was more sensible of the unhappy failure of pious resolves, than Johnson. He said one day, talking to an acquaintance on this subject, “Sir Hell is paved with good intentions.”

Johnson didn’t coin the phrase however. In 1670, the English theologian John Ray published A Collection of English Proverbs, in which he used the version that Johnson later quoted.

The ‘road’ element was added even later. The first time that the complete proverb ‘The road to hell is paved with good intentions’ appears in print is in Henry G. Bohn’s A Hand-book of Proverbs, 1855. Neither Bohn nor Ray claimed to have coined the phrase, they were collectors, not originators.

As to who did coin the phrase. the intention was to discover that and to let you know but, regrettably, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

golf cart Many years ago during my married days, I accidentally overturned my golf cart.

Elizabeth, a very attractive and keen golfer, who lived in a villa on the golf course, heard the noise and called out: “Are you okay? What’s your name?”

“It’s John, and I’m okay, thanks,” I replied as I pulled myself out of the twisted cart.

“John,” she said, (firm loose breasts undulating beneath her white silky robe) “forget your troubles. Come to my villa, rest a while and I’ll help you get the cart up later.”

“That’s mighty nice of you,” I answered, “but I don’t think my wife would like it.”

“Oh, come on now,” Elizabeth insisted.

She was so very pretty, very very sexy and very persuasive ... I was weak. “Well okay,” I finally agreed but thought to myself, “my wife won’t like it.”

After a couple of restorative Scotch and waters, I thanked Elizabeth. “I feel a lot better now, but I know my wife is going to be really upset. So I’d best go now.”

Whatever you think of David Cameron, the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby certainly taught him a lesson in public relations last week. Cameron, after days of prevaricating and hoping the issue would go away, was forced to own up to his history of offshore investments.

To be fair he held his hands up, accepted blame, and admitted that he had learned his lessons, and to be ultra fair he doesn’t seem to have broken any parliamentary rules. In fact he has no doubt unwittingly set an example to future Prime Ministers. But Justin Welby has upstaged him.

For anyone who has missed it, our Archbishop of Canterbury undertook DNA testing which showed that his real father wasn’t the one who had brought him up, and who was married to his mum. Which makes our supreme Anglican church leader illegitimate. A few years ago that would have been quite scandalous, and kept quiet at all costs. But the Archbishop seems to have taken it in his stride and chose to make the discovery public. Like the Prime Ministers investments, an old indiscretion on the part of the Archbishops’ mother didn’t have to be disclosed. But the question we are left with is inevitable. Which of these men would you rather trust?

Stuff which ends up at the back of a cupboard and forgotten. At least with new beauty products they can usually be used up with little harm done, never to be bought again. Like my now empty tube of Oral B super whitening toothpaste. Guaranteed to make a visible difference in 2 weeks, and 4 weeks later in the bin.

But one new gadget really has to take the prize in the category ‘potentially useless’. It is the nail polish holder.

A holder on a ring affair which you put on your finger and place the nail polish bottle into. This leaves the other hand free to apply your colour, with no indication of how to change the thing over to the other hand to complete the job.

April 15th 1738 however saw the invention of something we still all need - the bottle opener.

And finally, a thought for the day. Some days the supply of swear words is insufficient to meet my demands.

Barcelona fans crossing fingers for glamorous Leicester away day england Fans of Barcelona are hoping for the opportunity to take in all that Leicester has to offer after the Premier League leaders confirmed their place in next season’s Champions League.

With Manchester United’s loss confirming Leicester’s place in the Premier League top four, fans of many of Europe’s top teams are keeping everything crossed for the chance to visit Leicester.
