a true Victor’s

gent richard walker - rest in peace

hua hin, THAILAND It is our sad duty to report that one of Hua Hin’s best loved and most well known members of the community, Richard Walker, died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday night (24th April). In recent years he had been residing in a nursing home suffering increasingly from dementia, and while it is a very sad loss for his family and all who knew him, it was also a release from this agonising condition. Richard, or Dick as he was generally known, was best known in the area for successfully running two bars - Jungle Juice, on Soi Selekam, which he sold and then opened Dick’s Office (now Hua Hin Miss You) on Soi 80, one of the very first bars on that street. However it was his no nonsense yet gentlemanly demeanour that made him stand out from the crowd, and made him hugely popular amongst the expat, Thai and tourist community; the number of tributes paid to him on the Facebook thread started by his son John announcing the news is testament to that. The service held at the Hua Hin Temple on Tuesday, followed by a gathering at the Red Piano, similarly reflected on how so many people could call Richard a friend. We will all miss this true gentleman - our condolences to his family and all who knew him.

Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19 The stars could reveal your future, but they’d just be repeating what the Love Tester at the fair already told you. Aquarius Jan 20 – Feb 18 People will come from miles around to seek your wisdom on all manner of things, which is proof that people will do anything for a good laugh. Pisces Feb 19 – Mar 20 You’ll never smile again after the tragic loss of your lower jaw and lips this week. ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 20 The stars believe that a person must make his own mistakes, but they warn you not to do anything that may, say, burn down Cha Am this week.

Taurus Apr 21 – May 21 Only God can judge you. Unfortunately, He’s been appearing to all your friends and telling them what an asshole you are. Gemini May 22 – June 21 The black widow spider does not have the most powerful venom of any spider in the world, but it’s still going to do quite a number on your legs. Cancer Jun 22 – Jul 22 The truth is indeed elusive, hard to comprehend, and subjective. What we’re trying to say is: You’re fat. Leo Jul 23 – Aug 22 There hasn’t been a stampeding death in your area in more than a century, but your air horn and steer costume will change all that.

Virgo Aug 23 – Sep 22 Take solace in this: There is a meaning and purpose to the universe, even if it’s far too complicated for you to understand and won’t pay off for years. Libra Sep 23 – Oct 23 Some may call your breast implants tacky, but at least you had the guts to try out unconventional shapes. Scorpio Oct 24 – Nov 21 You’ve always been a fashionforward trendsetter, which is why, after next Thursday, they’ll all be saying that getting shot in the face is the new black. Sagittarius Nov 22 – Dec 21 Gradual, almost imperceptible change will make you a better person over the course of the next 37,000 years.

SERVED UP BY...

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Handle with kid gloves Handle a situation, or a person or an object, delicately and gingerly. Kid gloves are, of course, gloves made from the skin of a young goat. I say ‘of course’ but, in fact, when they were first fashioned in the 18th century they were more often made from lambskin, as that was easier to come by. They were clearly not intended for use when you were pruning the hedge and wearing kid gloves was the sartorial equivalent of pale white skin, that is, it indicated that the wearer was rich enough to indulge in a life of genteel indoor idleness. The earliest mentions of kid gloves are from England in the 1730s and the following is a typical report of a wealthy gentleman, laid out in his ‘Sunday best’, from Bagnall’s News, in The Ipswich Journal, December 1734: The Corpse of Mr. Thorp, A Distiller in Soho, who died a few Days since, said to be worth £10000 was put into his Coffin, quilted within with white Sattin; and after several yards of fine Holland [best-quality linen] were wrapt about his Body... on his Head was a Cap of the same Holland tied with a white Ribbond; he has about his Neck two Yards of Cambrick; a Cambrick Handkerchief between his Hands, on which he had a pair of white Kid Gloves: and in this manner he lay in state some Days and was afterwards buried in Buckinghamshire. At that time, kid gloves were viewed as rather ostentatious and only suitable for the nouveau riche - much as heavy gold chains might be viewed today. In the 19th century,

kid glove wearing was taken up by a notable member of the gentry, William Pole-Tylney-Long-Wellesley, the fourth Earl of Mornington, which might have been expected to establish them as a desirable accessory. The Preston Chronicle included this item in February 1837: Mr. Long Wellesley is, also, a man of excellent taste, though he rides in kid gloves, which Brummel used to say a man should be scouted [dismissed scornfully] for doing. The dismissal of the gloves by the socialite and fashion authority Beau Brummell was enough to send them to the back of the 19th century chav wardrobe. In fact, the description ‘kid-gloved’ came to be used as an insult, implying a lack of manhood, as was recorded in The Leicester Chronicle in January 1842: This contraband system of political allusions appears to suit the taste and nerves of the cautious, gentlemanly, kid-gloved Conservatism, which cannot endure the shock of attending a public meeting. It was only when the expression (and presumably also, the gloves) crossed the Atlantic that the negative connotations were lost and ‘handling (or treating) with kid gloves’ began to be used as we use it today, that is with the meaning ‘delicately; carefully’. The New-York monthly magazine The Knickerbocker has the first example of the term in print, from 1849: “Belligerent topics are not our forte and never was; neither do we handle them with kid gloves, when they fairly come in the way.”

When the jar was filled with olives and all the drinks consumed, the Irishman started to leave. “S’cuse me,” said a customer, who was puzzled over what McQuillan had done. “What was that all about?” “Nothing,” said the Irishman, “my wife just sent me out for a jar of olives.” Nervous Priest The new priest is nervous about hearing confessions, so he asks the older priest to sit in on his sessions. Minister’s Car A young boy had just gotten his driving permit. He asked his father, who was a minister, if they could discuss his use of the car. His father said to him, “I’ll make a deal with you. You bring your grades up, study your bible a little, and get your hair cut, then we will talk about it.” A month later the boy came back and again asked his father if they could discuss his use of the car. His father said, “Son, I’m real proud of you. You have brought your grades up, you’ve studied your bible diligently, but you didn’t get hair cut!” The young man waited a moment and replied, “You know dad, I’ve been thinking about that. You know Samson had long hair, Moses had long hair, Noah had long hair, and even Jesus had long hair.” His father replied, “Yes son, and they walked everywhere they went!” stalker A bloke bumped in to me on the tram the other day and said, “Remember Leonardo Di Caprio.” Then the same fella followed me home from the pub and said, “Remember Leonardo Di Caprio.” Things then got out of hand when he tapped on my bedroom window at 23.30 that night and said, “Remember Leonardo Di Caprio.” I thought, “That’s it, I’m going to the Police.” I told the officer I was being stalked and he asked if I could tell him anything about the man. I said, “Yes, he reminds me of Leonardo Di Caprio.”

to hull

and back Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas the politics of blackmail With the 90th birthday celebrations for Queen Elizabeth over and done with, the debate over the UK’s membership of the EU gains even more momentum. Not that you would really notice it too much on the streets of Hull, where people continue to be more concerned about the ever growing building site which used to be a city centre. More on that another week. Amidst the general air of EU apathy two incidents have finally stirred up a little debate. First what is generally seen as interference from President Obama, who has declared support for David Cameron’s campaign to remain a member. Of course we understand the sacrifices made by America during World War 2, just as we understand the sacrifices made by other allied countries. After all it was a ‘World’ war. But that was 70 years ago, and many of todays UK voters won’t fall for what they see as an attempt at emotional blackmail. It is also fortunate that the President hasn’t expressed his views in Thailand on their up-coming referendum on the constitution, where politicians face up to 10 years in prison for ‘damaging’ the outcome. Quite how that ‘damage’ will be assessed is unclear! The second incident is one which won’t have made headline news. Earlier this month every UK household received a government leaflet, produced at huge cost, which set out reasons for voting to remain in the EU. For many people the cost of producing and distributing the leaflet proved to be more controversial than it’s content, but the residents of one Hull council estate made their feelings known by getting together and returning their leaflets en masse to Number 10 Downing Street. Minus postage stamps of course. Some things don’t change, especially when it comes to political disagreements, and back in 1910 the UK

Parliament was going through what would then have been an even more divisive issue than EU membership. It was on April 29th 1910 that the UK Parliament passed it’s ‘Peoples’ Budget’, the first budget in UK history aimed at waging war on poverty and squalidness. Conceived by the Chancellor David Lloyd George, with the support of MP Winston Churchill, the Budget set out to re-distribute wealth amongst the British public by means of assorted tax changes, which would fund the Liberal Party’s welfare reforms. A radical idea in those days, especially when it would have been much more difficult for the super rich to re-locate to safe tax havens. April 29th also marks the anniversary of the marriage of Adolf Hitler to Eva Braun in 1945. Not a typical marriage made in heaven, it lasted just one day.

FIXTURES According to reports based on a Facebook post on the official club page, Hua Hin City have withdrawn (or have possibly been expelled) from this season’s competition, and all fixtures are now cancelled, due to financial issues stemming from the previous season. There is, apparently, some sort of meeting at the club’s ground at 5pm on Saturday 30th April, but at press time, no one seems to know what this will be concerning. As there is no AWOL next week, we will endeavour to discover more information for our next issue on 13th May. Official league tables no longer include Hua Hin City, as shown below. Sunday 1st May 2016 PREMIER LEAGUE Man Utd v Leicester 20:05 So, if Leicester can win here the title is theirs, but this will not be an easy game for them, as United will both want to win for their own position and lay down a marker to let the Foxes know the true meaning of winning the title. Leicester will again be without Jamie Vardy, whose ban has been extended, but given how capably Ulloa did in his absence this may not be a factor. However we think their title celebrations will have to be put on ice for a little while longer as they battle to a draw at Old Trafford. 23

no saint Jamie Vardy sainthood in jeopardy

england Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy’s proposed sainthood is rumoured to be under threat after his halo slipped and he was shown a red card for diving against West Ham, followed by the imposed ban being extended for ‘improper conduct’ following the sending off. The sending off and subsequent ban means his dream season has been thrown into turmoil in the final straight. Everything the jet-heeled striker has touched this season has turned to gold, scoring for fun for club and country, but the red card is threatening to derail plans to see him canonised. At the start of last week, his odds of having the Xmas number one lengthened dramatically after Ant and Dec were chosen to represent The UK in the Eurovision Song Contest, ahead of the Leicester City Golden Boy. Worse was to come on Sunday night. After his red card earlier in the day, he was refused entry into Leicester’s Lucky Fox

24

Having been proposed for Canonisation by Match of the Day anchorman Gary Lineker, the Vatican were considering bestowing their highest honour on the Leicester City frontman, to go with the knighthood, Freedom of Leicester and Blue Peter badge he has already earned this season – but after Sunday’s dive, that now seems to be under review. A spokesman for The Vatican, Cardinal Simoni Williams, said, “We don’t hand out Sainthoods to any Tom, Dick or Harry Kane. “You have to be holier than thou, and we certainly do not condone simulation. Although it’s still preferable to using a condom.” With his Beatification hanging in the balance, it is unclear if Vardy’s guest appearance in Countdown’s Dictionary Corner will still go ahead this week.

Above: Jamie Vardy asks Jon Moss if he will be joining him at church next weekend

Weatherspoons by a vigilant Bouncer. The disgruntled Doorman told us, “We don’t want his sorts coming in here. If he can’t behave himself on the pitch what is he going to be like with a couple of pints of Stella inside him?”
