hua hin, THAILAND While there may be a few foreigners in our local area who are unaware of what ‘Brexit’ is, and probably many UK expats and tourists who would rather it went away, there is no doubt that next Thursday’s (23rd June) referendum on whether the UK should remain in or leave the European Union has the potential to have a major impact on not only the UK and Europe, but far beyond that.

If the vote is to leave the EU, the so called Brexit, many are predicting it to be a major shock to the global economy, although it is often hard to know whether this is simply fearmongering by the pro-Remain side or genuine concern. What is true is that nobody really knows what the effects will be, and the odds are that it is all a bit of a charade, with politicians who were always regarded as Eurosceptics pushing the case for Remain (notably David Cameron and Jeremy Corbyn), while supposedly ‘independent’ bodies who make startling proclamations on the impact of ‘In’ or ‘Out’ turn out to be biased at source by their funding.

There could certainly be an impact on things like currency exchange rates, which would obviously affect anyone changing their currency into baht, but truly the only thing that can be said with certainty is that there is, and will be, uncertainty, even after next week’s vote, which is, of course, the type of situation beloved by speculators, who are already gambling in the global forex casinos and pushing various currencies up and down, the British Pound in particular but also the Thai baht and others. If these shenanigans produce a consistently weaker baht it can only help Thai tourism, exporters and the expats already here, but a stronger baht does not bear thinking about from many perspectives.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated.

This week it is..... Derring-do Heroic daring.

We now use ‘derring-do’ as a rather curious and archaic sounding two-part noun to describe ‘ye olde’ swordplay and the like. Use of the phrase was almost obligatory in any review of films starring the late Errol Flynn, who was surely the most audacious actor ever to swash a buckle. The fact that we come to have the word at all is actually due to a series of mistakes by a group of very eminent writers.

The earliest form of ‘derring-do’ in print is found in Geoffrey Chaucer’s Troylus And Criseyde, circa 1374: “In durring don that longeth to a knight.”

Chaucer was using the two words ‘durring’ and ‘don’ with their usual 14th century meanings of ‘daring’ and ‘do’. This line in his work translates into 20th century language as ‘in daring to do what is proper for a knight’.

The poet John Lydgate, paraphrased Chaucer in The Chronicle of Troy, 1430, and his ‘dorryng do’ was misprinted in later versions of the work as ‘derrynge do’.

In reading the above, the celebrated Tudor poet Edmund Spenser appears not to have realised that derrynge was a misprint of durring, the meaning of which he would have been familiar with, and interpreted ‘derrynge do’ as meaning ‘brave actions’. That was the way he used it in several of his late 16th poems, including his best-known work, The Faerie Queene, 1596:

“A man of mickle name, Renowned much in armes and derring doe.”

Last, but not least, make way for that inveterate plunderer of historic language, Sir Walter Scott. His use of ‘derring-do’ as a single word in the hugely popular novel Ivanhoe, 1820, cemented it into the language: “Singular,” he again muttered to himself, “if there be two who can do a deed of such derring-do!”

Incidentally, Flynn and his flamboyant colleagues weren’t described as swashbuckling for no reason.

‘Swash’ was a 16th century term that referred to the noise braggarts made to simulate the sound of swishing weapons when pretending to swordfight. A buckler was a small round shield, usually fixed to the forearm. So, a ‘swashbuckler’ was a swaggering ruffian; someone very likely to swash his buckle.

HEAVEN AND HELL While walking don the street one day, a corrupt Member of Parliament was tragically hit by a car and died.

His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance.

“Welcome to heaven,” says St. Peter. “Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we’re not sure what to do with you.”

“No problem, just let me in,” says the MP. “Well, I’d like to, but I have orders from the higher ups.

What we’ll do is have you spend one day in hell and one in heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity.”

“Really?, I’ve made up my mind. I want to be in heaven,” says the MP. “I’m sorry, but we have our rules.”

And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell.

The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a green golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him.

Everyone is very happy and in evening dress. They run to greet him, shake his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at the expense of the people.

They played a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster, caviar and the finest champagne.

Also present is the devil, who really is a very friendly guy who is having a good time dancing and telling jokes.

They are all having such a good time that before the MP realizes it, it is time to go.

Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and waves while the elevator rises.

So, 24 hours passed with the MP joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and, before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns.

“Well, then, you’ve spent a day in hell and another in heaven. Now choose your eternity.”

The MP reflects for a minute, then he answers: “Well, I would never have said it before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in hell.”

So St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell...

On the plus side it is a relief to know that by next Friday the EU referendum will be over as well, bar the shouting.

Never before can any UK poll have caused so much controversy and debate, and never before can voters have been so lacking in the information they really need.

Meanwhile, with uncanny timing, we have had a week of TV schedules disrupted both by referendum debates and by Euro 2016. Those of you who have to suffer Thai TV soaps shouldn’t really complain. Or perhaps you are looking forward to the day when you will be able to buy a SexBot and retire from it all to your own island paradise? (WiFi connected of course.)

The imminent arrival of the SexBot is of course causing the kind of controversy which could almost eclipse the EU debate. But while ‘experts’ worry about their future impact on society, work on these humanoid robots is well advanced, so if you like the idea of living with your own version of the Stepford Wives start saving now. The expected cost of your new robotic partner is 40,000 pounds sterling, although of course future mass production should bring prices down.

When you think about it the expected SexBot trend could provide a pension lifeline for all those celebrities who have little else to offer than their looks and implants, and who could sell the rights to the use of their images as robots. London, the now worldwide brand hopefully has more staying power than British Home Stores, which has now gone the same way as Woolworths, Littlewoods stores, and TJHughes. To be honest I won’t miss BHS, which no longer seemed to know what market to attract. But its’ closure will leave yet more holes in our city centres which can’t be filled. All four of these redundant retailers occupied large premises, and a city can only take so many Pound stores.

No, the real losers in the case of BHS are its’ 11,000 staff, not to mention the many thousands more employed by Sir Phillip Greens’ huge Arcadia retail group, whose combined staff pension schemes are alleged to have deficits upwards of 500 million pounds. And while the allegations fly around Green doesn’t seem very keen to face a Commons enquiry into his business affairs, which, in case you missed it, included selling BHS in March last year for one pound.

There are of course precedents which have been set by other big businessmen which Green might decide to follow. After all he does have a choice of yachts from which to disappear, or he could maybe opt to join Thaksin in exile. Whatever the outcome the whole sorry affair won’t help our Government one bit in its’ drive to have everyone join a workplace pension scheme.
