hua hin, THAILAND The animal world in Thailand has been making headlines recently, with the closure of the Tiger Temple, and official raids on other establishments across the country, but one of the biggest problems Thailand faces is that of the dog population. While they are often referred to by Westerners as ‘man’s best friend’, dogs in Thailand are not shown much love or friendship by us, principally because their growth in sheer numbers makes them seen more as pests than anything else, with many people scared of the large packs of soi dogs that can be encountered at night.

There are many organisations that have, and are trying to address the situation, through a variety of means, but they often struggle because their efforts require funds, as well as more awareness and consideration from the public. In the past we have championed the efforts of Headrock Dogs, who still operate but now in the Bang Saphan area, and now in Hua Hin taking up the baton are Rescue Paws.

The people behind Rescue Paws hail from Thailand and South Africa, and the charity emerged from founding companies, The Global Work & Travel Co. and Xplore Asia, which cover all costs such as administration, staff, marketing, fund-raising and communications. Donations received go directly to benefiting the dogs, such as medical supplies, food and individual projects. More details of their work can be found at their website, rescuepawsasia.org, with volunteer work and donations being the key areas assistance can be given.

Through a programme of adoptions, education, neutering, sponsoring packs and general health care of the animals, Rescue Paws will make Hua Hin a better place for both the dogs and human residents of the area. They deserve our help to do so.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated.

This week it is..... Moot point An irrelevant argument.

Some may disagree with the above meaning and argue that it means ‘a point open to debate’, rather than ‘a point not worth debating’. That former meaning was certainly the correct one when the term was first coined, but that’s going back a while.

Laurence Humphrey, the president of Magdalen College, Oxford, wrote Nobles or of Nobilitye, a manual of behaviour for the English nobility, in 1563. In that he wrote: “That they be not forced to sue the lawe, wrapped with so infinite crickes and moot poyntes.”

In medieval England, moots, or meets, were assemblies or councils where points of government were debated.

The country was split into juridicial areas called hundreds and administered via assemblies known as hundredmotes. The form of government has long since vanished but the term hundred is still in use as the name of the procedural device which gives consent to MPs’ resignation. British MPs aren’t allowed to resign and, when members wish to leave Parliament they may do so by applying for the notional position of Crown Steward and Bailiff of the Chiltern Hundreds. In such assemblies points which were put up for discussion were said to be mooted.

The change in meaning has come about following the introduction of ‘moot courts’, which are session where

law students train for their profession by arguing hypothetical cases, that is, ‘moot points’. The lack of any substantive outcome from these theoretical cases has led to the ‘unimportant/not worth discussing’ meaning of ‘moot point’, which is what many people accept today.

A further step, and one which it is to be hoped doesn’t gain public acceptance, is the spelling as ‘mute point’.

This is a simple mistake, deriving no doubt from the fact that ‘moot’ is an archaic word with little other usage apart from in ‘moot point’ and that ‘mute’ makes some sort of sense when allied to the ‘not worth discussing’ meaning. This mistake isn’t restricted to recent years.

The earliest example of it that can be found is from John Hutchinson’s Philosophical and Theological Works, 1749.

frozen A farmer goes out to his field one morning only to find all of his cows frozen solid. As far as the eye can see are cows, motionless like statues. It had been a bitterly cold night, but he’d never thought anything like this would happen. The realisation of the situation then dawned on him. With his entire livestock gone, how would he make ends meet? How would he feed his wife and kids? How would he pay the mortgage? He sat with his head in his hands, trying to come to terms with his impending poverty.

Just then, an elderly woman walked by, “What’s the matter?” asked the old lady. The farmer gestured toward the frozen cows and explained his predicament to the woman. Without hesitation the old woman smiled and began to rub one of the cows noses. After a few seconds the cow began to twitch and was soon back to normal and chewing the cud.

One by one, the old woman defrosted the cows until the whole field was full of healthy animals. The farmer was delighted and asked the woman what she wanted as a repayment for her deed. She declined his offer and walked off across the field. A passer-by who had witnessed the whole thing approached the farmer.

“You know who that was don’t you?” asked the passer-by.

“No” said the farmer “who?”

“That was Thora Hird.”

and back Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas an auspicious day June 24th has been an important date in history for both Thailand and England. On this day in 1509 Henry VIII was crowned King of England, while on the same date in 1932 a coup brought Thailands’ absolute monarchy to an end.

For both countries the effects have been long lasting. In Englands’ case of course with the bloody establishment of a new Church, which 500 years on few of us even think about or question. In Thailand that coup is still within living memory for some, and will certainly still be in the minds of the generations who followed.

One of those who was around when the coup happened was His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Then known as Prince Bhumibol of Siam, he was just 4 and a half years old, and living in Bangkok with his mother Mom Sangwan, brother Prince Ananda, and sister Princess Galyani.

The family had returned to Siam in 1928, following many years abroad, mainly in the States, where Prince Mahidol had studied medicine and public health. The Prince had always suffered poor health himself, and was dedicated to improving the living conditions and medical care of his people. But towards the end of his life things in Siam weren’t looking too good politically either. His half brother King Prajadhipok had succeeded the throne in 1925. The number of eligible heirs was dwindling, and for some reason Prince Mahidol wasn’t keen on the prospect - however remote - of either of his sons becoming monarch. In fact in 1928 he had a good friend take down a statement that he - the Prince - didn’t want either of his sons to become heirs to the throne. Perhaps he feared for the future of his children should a major coup happen. But Prince Mahidol died the following year aged just 38, never knowing that by twists of fate both his sons were destined to become Kings of Siam.

Just as Prince Mahidol and other members of his family at that time had adopted the practice of studying abroad, so had other members of the Siam elite, and it would be two of them, Pridi Banomyong and Pibul Songgram, who would become instrumental in the drive to introduce to Siam what they had seen in Europe - representational democracy.

On June 24th 1932 King Prajadhipok was staying at his summer palace in HuaHin. As he enjoyed a round of golf he received the news of the bloodless coup, in which Pridi and Pibul had taken control of Bangkok. Siams’ absolute monarchy was over. There was a counter revolution the following year which failed, and by March 1935 King Prajadhipok abdicated, leaving a vacancy which would be filled by his nephews Prince Ananda, and later by Prince Bhumibol.

The rest, as they say, is history. But the selection of heirs back in 1932 would secure the continuation of the Chakri dynasty, and surely Prince Mahidol would be proud of what his youngest son, His Majesty King Bhumibol has achieved.

sterling work Raheem Sterling awarded man of the match by Wales

england Raheem Sterling has been formally recognised for his invaluable contribution to the Welsh team against England in the European Championships.

Sterling, who appeared to decide which direction to kick the ball by rolling a dice or a consulting a deck of tarot cards, was identified by Welsh fans as having done the most of anyone on the pitch to try to defeat deadly rivals England.

Sadly Sterling’s efforts weren’t enough to secure a victory for Wales but fans decided his efforts deserved acknowledgement.

He beat off a strong challenge by Harry Kane for the award, whose ability to turn a dead ball situation against England helped swing the game in Wales’ favour several times.
