Football Gossip Hua Hin Golf To Hull And Back Wah, Wah, Replay!

keep calm

& carry on british expats feel brexit effect hua hin, THAILAND We weren’t going to make any more serious reference to the tumultuous Brexit vote that took place in the UK last week, but a combination of reader communication and a lack of local news has left us with little choice this week. You will also find a little EU Referendum humour on our Jokes page this week, on page 10. However we are going to try and give a slightly different spin on events to how the world media has been covering it, and try to make a comparison to the position Thailand has found itself in previously. Some of the noises coming out of the defeated Remain camp, from both politicians and the public, almost echo some of what was said in Thailand by those supporting the so-called ‘Yellow Shirts’, who maintained that many of the opposing side were not intellectually equipped to be able to cast their vote properly, when faced by yet another ‘Red Shirt’ win. The Remain camp haven’t gone quite that far, but some have inferred that people voting Leave are either racists or doddery old people, and were conned by the campaign, going as far as to call for a second referendum. Obviously in Thailand the animosity between the two sides spilled over into ugly scenes of airport takeovers, main intersection closures and violence, as well as accusations of vote buying and polling irregularities, and eventually heralded the army takeover and current political situation. It doesn’t seem likely that we will see such scenes in the UK, but either way, democracy becomes the loser when such votes are challenged, even with harsh and insulting words. Hopefully as time goes on, it can heal the rifts, and each side can acknowledge that it is neither a doomsday nor a paradise scenario, and that both were right and wrong. For anyone who is being directly and negatively affected by the current financial markets instability, we hope and trust that it is both short term and reversible over time.
