what’s going on? town jittery after attacks; rumours and speculation fuel suspicion
hua hin, THAILAND As we write this week’s front page, six days after the initial explosions that killed one and injured 20 people, Hua Hin has, on the face of it, returned to normal. However in the days since the incidents, which occurred at the same time as other attacks in Trang, Phuket, Phangnga, Krabi, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Ranong and Surat Thani, and further explosions in Hua Hin, leaving a total of 4 dead and 37 injured across Thailand, a combination of things has left many wondering exactly what is going on. Schools across the area were ordered closed on Monday despite the ‘back to normal’ announcement on Saturday, and there have been many reports of further unexploded devices being discovered subsequently. While there has been some evidence of greater vigilance by the authorities, some of the measures taken have been seen by some as both inadequate and incompetent, judging by comments made on social media and forums, amid a raft of misinformation, speculation and rumour. There were also reports that Hua Hin police were aware of the threat of Thursday night’s explosions, and this has helped fuel a growing suspicion that the true state of affairs is being covered up in order to minimise the affects on tourism. AWOL is not privy to any more information than our readers, and we agree with the opinion that we should not allow those who try to disrupt our lives with such attacks to do so, but at the same time the authorities, police and army have a responsibility to provide comprehensive and consistent information to quell the suspicions and speculation, and a duty to catch and deal with those responsible for the attacks as quickly as possible. Our message is simple - Stay Safe, Be Vigilant and Don’t Let Them Win
