feeling Victor’s blu bluport ‘resort’ mall finally due to open

hua hin, THAILAND Following a number of delays, the official opening date for the massive Bluport shopping mall has finally been confirmed as Saturday 1st October. The mall, located opposite the Intercontinental Resort, south of the town centre on the main Phetkasem Road, was originally announced as opening in 2015, then in early 2016, and is expected to boost Hua Hin’s flagging tourist industry, which has had several setbacks this year. The mall includes a six screen cinema, however this rather disappointingly is provided by the same company, Major Cineplex, who have made such a hash of the cinema in Market Village, with a generally poor range of original soundtrack movies which are often screened at inconvenient times and with little advance warning. We can only hope that the new cinema will be more like their Bangkok outlets, which are considerably better. Also forming part of the new mall is Whaley Port, grandly announced as the ‘First Interactive Underwater World Theme Park In Thailand’, Dining Port (‘The Finest Gastronomic Haven’) featuring more than 100 restaurants and cafes, Gourmet Market, which we believe is a fresh market for the budding chefs amongst us, and of course, shops, which the promotional material states that there will be over 200 of. As it stands there isn’t much information on what outlets will be present in the shopping areas, nor if a supermarket of any description will be present, but their website at bluporthuahin.com, and Facebook page, BluportHuaHinOfficial, do give a few hints. There are going to be events and special offers aplenty, particularly on opening day, including live shows, and it can equally be expected that the mall will be absolutely mobbed, and roads around it gridlocked for the opening day and beyond. At this point it is not clear if there will be adequate or easy access via the rear of the mall, but we can only hope there is.

Dog days

The Rescue Paws non-profit animal relief centre in Kao Tao recently had a visit and a boost from staff at Banyan The Resort Hua Hin. Doing their part for animal aid, Banyan The Resort Hua Hin recently nominated Rescue Paws as benefactor of their latest Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, and on Wednesday 6 September, a group of 15 Banyan staff members, lead by Public Relations Manager, Paranee Centiyanonth (Bee), visited Rescue Paws at their facilities in Khao Tao, and got a chance to take a few of the dogs for a walk to the beach, followed by a much needed shower. Having all learnt more about their daily operations, current challenges and future goals, as well as the social impact that an uncontrolled stray animal population has on local communities, the party joined in a ceremony to present Rescue Paws with a 10,000 baht cash donation and generous collection of medical supplies & products, collars, leashes, dog food, medication and linen. The donation had been raised by hosting several ‘Meating & Fishing’ dinners, as well as three charity fairs during July to September. Hanli Engelbrecht, Operations Manager at Rescue Paws, noted that their continued success is possible only with the participation and support of local communities and establishments. Extending a sincere thanks for the generous donations, she applauded Banyan The Resort for their efforts and hope that others may follow their shining example. Khun Paranee ended the ceremony with a pledge of Banyan’s on-going support to Rescue Paws in the future. Rescue Paws started initially as a stray dog feeding programme, Rescue Paws has since 2014 grown exponentially into a fully-fledged animal relief center. Working towards controlling the unwanted population, and decreasing the number of abandoned, injured and abused animals roaming our streets, their main activities are focused on sterilization, vaccination, providing veterinary care and facilitating adoptions of stray animals. Rescue Paws also encourages and promotes respect for animals, animal care, and animal welfare through educational campaigns at a community level. Their comprehensive program offers fellow animal lovers a chance to get involved with their rescue efforts in various ways, be it for a day, a month or a few months - even from a distance, if you don’t happen to be in Thailand. SERVED UP BY...

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. bleak as it might sound, as the counterpoint would be This week it is..... For whom the bell tolls A quotation from a work by John Donne, in which he that there is some part of the living in the dead and that explores the interconnectedness of humanity - see we continue a form of life after death. Ernest Hemingway helped to make the phrase below. John Donne (1572-1631), Devotions Upon Emergent commonplace in the language when he chose to use Occasions, Meditation XVII: Nunc Lento Sonitu Dicunt, the quotation for the title of his 1940-published book about the Spanish Civil War. Hemingway refers back to Morieris: “Perchance he for whom this bell tolls may be so ill, as ‘for whom the bells tolls’ and to ‘no man is an island’ that he knows not it tolls for him; and perchance I may to demonstrate and examine his feelings of solidarity think myself so much better than I am, as that they who with the allied groups fighting the fascists. There was are about me, and see my state, may have caused it to a strong feeling amongst many intellectuals around the world at the time that it was a moral duty to fight toll for me, and I know not that. fascism, which they feared may take root world-wide if ... No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a not checked. This view was given voice later in the wellpiece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be known poem First They Came for the Jews, attributed washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if to Pastor Martin Niemöller: a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend’s or of thine own were: any man’s death diminishes me, First they came for the Jews because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never and I did not speak out send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee.” because I was not a Jew. Donne lived in Tudor and Stewart England, and at that time the tolling of church bells to mark various events was an important feature of daily life. The tolling referred to in the quotation is, of course, that of funeral bells. Donne’s view, which has, oddly for a 17th century Christian, much in common with 21st century eastern religions, was that all people are socially and spiritually interconnected; for example, the contemporary Buddhist view is demonstrated by the reply given by the Dalai Lama, when asked during a visit to Northern Ireland how the warring Protestants and Catholics could co-exist: “Remember we are all one - all the same”. Donne seems to be saying that whatever affects one affects us all. This is highlighted by the famous ‘no man is an island’ line at the beginning of the ‘for whom the bells tolls’ paragraph. Donne’s Meditations concern man’s spiritual and social functioning, especially with regard to illness and death. They are somewhat mystical and difficult to interpret, especially without the benefit of experience of the nuances of the social and religious sensibilities of a 17th century Englishman. It is a testament to Donne’s insight that the work contains much that strikes deep chords with people living and dying today. There’s some debate about what precisely what was meant. Some think that Donne was simply pointing out people’s mortality and that when a funeral bell was heard it was a reminder that we are nearer death each day, that is, the bell is tolling for us. Others view it more mystically and argue that Donne is saying we are all one and that, when one dies, we all die a little. This isn’t as

Then they came for the Communists and I did not speak out because I was not a Communist. Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak out for me. Hemingway adapted the novel as the screenplay to a successful 1943 film of the same title, starring Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman. how to survive as an alien in thailand

facing the music One of the biggest culture clashes that expats will encounter when living in Thailand is the issue of ‘face’. While the concept of face exists in the Western world, it does not come close to how it is observed in most Asian countries, with Thailand being one where face is extremely crucial. Understanding how loss of face occurs in Thailand is not always easy, and dependent on many factors, particularly the relationship between the people involved, which will often also determine the reaction of the person, or group who have lost face. It is important to also note that face does not only apply to people, but can also be lost for corporate entities or even government departments. It can occur in social or business settings as well. There is no ‘one size fits all’ solution in how to handle potential loss of face situations, and it is quite easy to blunder into one without even realising you have done so, although some situations are the same as expats could experience in their home countries, such as embarrassing someone with an inappropriate comment or gesture. Of course the biggest problem is that us expats may gauge what is embarrassing differently to

how Thais do, depending on how much Western contact a Thai has had and how well they know you. The same joke made to two different Thais could result in two very different responses! A good rule of thumb is to avoid making flippant or jokey comments to Thais that you don’t know, unless you have a good Thai friend with you who can smooth over any misunderstandings, but even completely innocent conversation can lead to difficulty sometimes. As with many situations, alcohol can often make a harmless comment appear much worse, and combined with limited language abilities on either side can be very dangerous; however, most Thais who have had some exposure to Westerners and our strange ways will be very accommodating, and not over react to comments that could be seen as provocative. A final tip is to avoid waving your hands around when talking, as this can be seen as aggressive by the Thais. and back Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas law and order Over 300 of Thailands’ Finest gathered near Hua Hin clock tower a week ago in a show of strength against local crime. I wish I had been there to see it. Phetkasem Road is never easy to cross at the best of times - or was the traffic diverted for the event? And did they all receive freebies from Starbucks? Still, let’s hope the ATM scammers, still on the loose bomb planters, and assorted muggers have got the message. You don’t mess with Hua Hin. But surely, while there was such a show of law enforcement in the area, a few of them could have been spared to crack the whip by finally enforcing arrest warrants on the owners of illegal beachfront properties? Or perhaps the issue of those two year old warrants will justify another seaside jolly in the dim and distant future. Because no one - apart from the Deputy Chief of Prachuap Kiri Khan Police - seems inclined to evict those thriving businesses along Naresdamri Road, even if they do encroach over the beach. And let’s face it, the term ‘beach’ down there is used loosely. Granted the restaurants etc do contribute to the rubbish problem, and that should be controlled, which would be like trying to prevent rail staff throwing black rubbish bags off moving trains. But what other harm do the ‘illegals’ do, other than draw tourists away from the safety of their all inclusive hotels. And more to the point, what would replace them? One good example of what to do with a waterfront area can be seen in Nong Khai, which sits on the Mekhong River. Its’ waterfront has a long promenade, complete with street lamps, flowers and seating, onto which open the rear ‘beer garden’ areas of bars and restaurants. All providing views of sedate river traffic and the Friendship Bridge. There are similar promenades in Chiang Mai on the banks of the Ping river. There is surely enough space for a similar layout on that part of Naresdamri Road, allowing existing business owners the chance to continue to trade, albeit in much smaller premises. They could even create a fresh new ‘beach’ where restaurants could put tables for customers. Subject to permission from the Tessabahn of course. Failing that there is always the option of simply creating a park area with beach access. But of course I am overlooking the obvious. That land is worth far more now than it was when a few entrepreneurs dared to build their piers, and provide tourists with what they might expect in a Thai resort. Quaint, slightly rickety places with good local food. Another initiative which may or may not make it past starters orders is the proposal to re-classify some

currently illegal substances as Category 2, which would make them legal for medicinal use only. One of the three substances is marijuana, aka ganja, which also causes controversy in many other countries, even though it is known to ease severe pain. The proposed legal medicinal use of another two drugs in Thailand is more alarming. The first - amphetamines were originally manufactured by the Nazis to keep their troops awake. They stimulate the nervous system, and while they can be used in carefully controlled doses to help with some conditions, including Narcolepsy, they certainly can’t be knocked back like Smarties. Then there is Yaba. A derivative of synthetic amphetamines which it is claimed can be rustled up in any kitchen from a variety of ingredients, including Lithium from camera batteries. And although that is one way to deal with re-cycling Lithium, you might not want your TukTuk driver to be any higher than they are already. You will of course all have your own thoughts on which way Thailand should go with this, and it is a difficult one. For what it’s worth I would rather see laws strictly enforced on any drivers found to be under the influence of any of the above, legally or not. Passing the responsibility for who legally gets high to doctors is simply passing the buck. September 16th 1963 saw the amalgamation of Malaya, Singapore, British North Borneo and Sarawak to form what we now know as Malaysia. The 16th also seems to have been auspicious for the USSR, where five of their nuclear tests were carried out on this date in 1961, 62, 67, 79 and 87!

extracting the urine leak suggests giant ‘clean pee’ tank caused diving pool discolouration brazil With the Paralympics getting underway this week in Rio, following the conclusion of the main Olympics last month, stunning revelations by an unnamed source have poured cold water on the official explanation for the diving pools turning green during the competition.
