RED ARROWS DISPLAY CANCELLED

•While • no official announcement was made this week before we went to press, the much anticipated HUA HIN

display in Hua Hin by the crack RAF aerobatics team, the Red Arrows, was cancelled at the start of the week. We can only guess at the reasons for this, with the most likely being that the display date fell within the 30 day mourning period for Hia Majesty the King, although projected inclement weather may also have had a bearing on the decision. Given that the team have performed in Thailand before, there is some hope that they will return at some point in the future, although it is thirteen years since they last performed in the Kingdom. Whether there will be a future planned display in Hua Hin is impossible to know. The team also cancelled their display in Singapore due to severe weather concerns. The logisitics of mounting the extensive Asia-Pacific and Middle East Tour of the Red Arrows would have been huge, so we are sure that whatever the reason for the cancellation, the lateness of the news confirming it would have been down to attempts to allow it to continue if at all possible. The safety of the pilots and respect for the people of Thailand must take priority though. We can only hope that they will be invited back in the near future to show the strong British support that there has always been for Thailand, with the two countries sharing so many similarities, notably their monarchies. A display over the town that the King regarded as home would be a magnificent way to show this.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. that expression, in a rather backhand compliment to his wife, THIS WEEK IT IS..... WORSE FOR WEAR in the poem The Ghost, 1794: Shabby or worn through use; drunk. The expression ‘worse for wear’ is something of a linguistic oddity in that it has endured a variety of different meanings, Some, in my place, to gain their ends, versions and spellings during its lifetime. The meaning there is clear - ‘as things are used they deteriorate’. As it became established in the language ‘worse for wear’ developed into a synonym for ‘worn out’. At this stage the variant ‘none the worse for wear’ was coined, meaning ‘used but not worn out’ and also dragging along its misspelled ‘worst/ ware/where’ versions. LIFE ON MARS

ELECTED! 2016 has seen some crucial and surprising national votes around the world, most notably the EU referendum in the UK, and the Presidential Election in the USA. Thailand was meant to have an election this year, but for various reasons this has been postponed a number of times. What they did have was a referendum on the Constitution, which was carried with a 61% vote in favour of what the military government had proposed, on a 59% turnout. Wikipedia states that “The primary difference between the 2016 constitution and the 2007 document was that the Senate would become a fully appointed chamber rather than a partially elected one during the 5 year “transitional period” stipulated in the charter. This was seen as an effort by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) to retain influence once it has left office, as it will have the right to appoint the 250 members. The Senate would also be granted veto power over the House of Representatives on amending the constitution, and a Prime Minister will be allowed to be appointed from outside either house.” When the results of the vote are examined in more detail, there is what some might say a surprising number of votes in favour of the government’s position in areas regarded as hostile to them, although (again according to Wikipedia) “The NCPO banned criticism of the draft constitution and prohibited monitoring of the referendum. Activists against the document were arrested, detained, and prosecuted in military courts, whilst voters who expressed their intention to vote against the draft were also arrested and prosecuted by the military regime.”

Given events since the vote, it could be seen as a wise move by the current leaders to keep a strong grip on the country, but this clearly is at odds with those who argue strongly for democracy, as well as the parts of the country who are strong supporters of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, and the people in the south who have been engaged in a long running campaign, violent at times, to get better treatment for the largely Muslim areas close to the Malaysian border. Thailand is clearly going to go through more difficult times as they try to square their circle, but they might do well to heed the warnings that have been issued by the events in other countries. The Thai people are generally more accepting and less demonstrative than their western counterparts when faced with something seen as ‘not fair’ but there is evidence that this is changing. We hope that an equitable solution is pursued and successfully achieved for all in Thailand, and the Thais often do find a way when none seems possible, something else to love about this country.

TO HULL AND BACK

••

THE DANGERS OF DEMOCRACY During the summer several Hull folk claimed to have seen a werewolf. Even more strange there were no reports that any of them were on their way home from the pub when the sightings occurred. The werewolf however was no stranger to the location, along the banks of an old open drain, as there have been other reports of its’ appearance from time to time over the years. But the strange beast seemed to be more active this year, even prompting teams of paranormal investigators and werewolf fans to search for it. Preferably in the dark when the drain was suitably shrouded in mist. Typical werewolf conditions in fact, but to no avail. Then at the end of October the sightings were explained by an academic at the Gothic Manchester Festival. There a Doctor Sam George explained that the sightings all took place close to a part of the country where some of our last remaining native wolves once roamed, and that the visions could be explained as ‘a result of cultural collective guilt at the extinction of an entire indigenous species.’ I think I’ll stick with the idea of a real live werewolf - it sounds like much more fun. Also in Manchester pop star Justin Bieber walked off stage during a gig because his fans wouldn’t quit screaming. It seems he was trying to be serious for a change, but his fans wouldn’t listen to his pleas, probably because they couldn’t hear him. But he must have had a talking to by management backstage because he emerged again and grovelled to his audience, explaining that he was just trying to have ‘a moment’ with them. Watch out for Bieber at a Buddhist retreat near you. November 11th is of course Armistice Day, marking the signing of the armistice which brought World War 2 to an end. It is also the day on which, in 1989, East German people began to break down the Berlin wall. Both events should remind us that people shouldn’t be divided by politics, race or religion, but in the real world of course they still are, as even FIFA has recently shown. Not to mention the destruction of ‘the Jungle’ migrant camp in Calais. Meanwhile a new camp has appeared in the centre of Hull. Not for migrants, but for homeless locals, who are pitching their tents at night on one of the few remaining spaces not yet affected by resurfacing work. ‘Tent City’ as it is known serves to highlight the lack of hostel places locally, with just 9 hostel beds available last weekend for over 20 homeless people.

’s g Jinsort Re

No doubt Tent City will also be despatched in good time for Hulls’ City of Culture year which begins in just 7 weeks, while the workmen with their orange barriers will almost certainly still be around. There are times when you have to hand it to the Thais, who can build a few hotels faster than Hull can lay paving stones, and this is one of those times. Now, are you welcoming the return of Thai soaps to your TV screens, or just looking forward to floating your Khratong? Whatever you do on Monday watch out for a stray werewolf baying at that huge full moon.

On This Day

As already referred to in this week’s column, in 1918 the Armistice was signed by the Allies and Germany at 11am on this day, ending World War 1. On another historical war note, it was also the day in 1745 when Bonnie Price Charlie’s army entered England.

FEATURED GAME

SATURDAY 12TH NOVEMBER 2016 FIFA WORLD CUP QUALIFYING - EUROPEAN REGION England v Scotland (F) 02:45 A game that is as unpredictable as the US Presidential election, as these oldest of foes face each other for the 113th time; possibly the local derby to top them all, which means throw the form book out of the window. Scottish fans and players will want this more than any other game they have played, and that will count for a lot - they will be biting into tackles and have an extra yard all over the pitch. There will be cards, inevitably, on both sides, and ultimately they may decide the outcome. We are going to predict a very narrow win for England.

WORLD CHAMPIONS

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA CONTINUES TO DOMINATE BASEBALL WORLD SERIES

••

USA The all-conquering Americans last week tightened their grip on the baseball World Series, leaving 195 other countries trailing in their wake. This time it was the turn of the Chicago Cubs to reinforce America’s total domination of the series by beating the Cleveland Indians 8-7 on a thrilling night for their millions of fans worldwide. Since it’s inception in 1903, no other country has come close to the world title as the American baseball juggernaut has rumbled over all-comers. One of the first to congratulate the triumphant American team was president elect, Donald Trump, who spoke to reporters from Florida where he is currently on the campaign trail. Forming an “o” with his thumb and forefinger and moving his hand up and

Left: Wrigley Field, famous for it’s starring role in ‘The Blues Brothers’

down, Trump told reporters: “This is a tremendous win for America. It’s just tremendous. “In fact, if I were to try to tell you how tremendous this is, you wouldn’t believe me. Under my presidency, this sort of tremendous event would be happening

all the time. “You would all be so proud. So proud. So proud of me and proud of your country. I can’t tell you how proud you would be because you wouldn’t believe me. “However, under Hillary, none of these tremendous achievements would happen. Hillary is a crook who belongs in jail.
