VAGABONDS IMMIGRATION OFFICE TO MOVE AGAIN

•Over• the years it has been a regular occurence for us to report on another move for the Immigration HUA HIN

Department in Hua Hin, but the last one, in July 2014, appeared to have finally established a permanent home for the vagabond division in Soi 35. However, the news this week is that they will be on the move again, to a new, purpose built government building on the outskirts of town. The reported location is on Treasury Department land on Road (or Highway) 1004, not far from where that road crosses soi 88; 1004 actually runs all the way north to south from the Pala U Road to soi 112. The reported date of completion of the building, which will house a number of government departments, is February 2017, with approximately 60% of the construction completed. However the news of the move has not been officially announced or confirmed, and these reports stem from a well respected local Thai journalist, Kulsawek Sawekwannakorn, who posted pictures and information on Facebook. There have been other rumours that the department may instead be moving to another new government building in Soi 2, and it is entirely possible that final decisions have not actually been made yet on which department goes where. Khun Kulsawek also reported that a new ‘passport office’ would be opening inside the new Bluport shopping mall in December, with five staff, to deal with foreigners who have a Thai spouse, so our take on this is that this will mainly be for 90 day reporting, which has often clogged up previous immigration offices, but we will all have to wait and see. See this week’s ‘Life On Mars’ on page 11 for another immigration related story.

UK Plane forced to land at Manchester Airport after passengers block all toilets A plane had to make an emergency landing after passengers blocked up all the toilets on board. The Boeing 777 – which tends to have eight or nine toilets – was en route from Toronto to Pakistan when it was forced to abort the flight. The Pakistan International Airlines flight landed at Manchester Airport following problems over the North Sea. The airline said: ‘Today’s Toronto-Lahore flight has been diverted to Manchester as its toilet got choked, due to something solid thrown by passengers. As all toilets are connected with a common drain line, the rest of the toilets were choked. ‘Keeping in view the convenience of passengers, the flight has been diverted to Manchester where the toilets will be serviced before the flight continues its onward journey.’ The airline added: ‘Inconvenience to passengers is regretted.’ The plane was diverted for a total of five hours while the pipes were unclogged

GHANA Calls for DNA test after woman finds concerning ‘meat’ in her soup A woman is pretty worried after she found some strangelooking meat in her soup. It wasn’t until she had eaten more than two thirds of the dish that she noticed it looked like something nobody would want to find in their takeaway. The customer, named only as Akousa, said: ‘I had gone to get some food from the food joint because I was hungry and my preferred choice was Tuo zafi which I bought and took home to eat.’ Tuo zafi is a traditional dish in Accra, Ghana, where she bought it. But she immediately stopped eating when she noticed the lumpen sausage looked nauseatingly similar to a human penis. ‘I had eaten all the other meat in the soup and was about finishing off with the biggest piece when I noticed the funny looking meat which looked like a male genital organ,’ she told local media. Her brother said she should contact police and send the ‘meat’ to a lab for testing. ‘My sister opted to show it to a lab technician friend later, who said because the meat was cooked, an ordinary lab test wouldn’t be able to prove it to be animal or human,’ she told 3news.com.

The mother of a seven-year-old girl who took a picture with Pudsey told The Sun: ‘There didn’t seem to be anything wrong at the time, but I sent the picture to my sister and she replied telling me to have another look. That’s when I noticed it. I was horrified. It could be they were genuinely raising money for Children in Need, but who is to say this wasn’t a paedophile using the charity suit to get near kids?’ She searched Trinity shopping centre in Leeds but could not find the mascot. Having been contacted by the woman, the BBC said: ‘The Pudsey mascot suits are issued with guidelines on how they should be worn and used to make sure Pudsey’s appearances are appropriate.

FRENCH VERSUS ENGLISH (thanks to Terry on Facebook) An Englishman is having breakfast, in Paris, one morning (coffee, croissants, bread, butter and jam) when a Frenchman, chewing bubble-gum, sits down next to him. The Englishman ignores the Frenchman who, nevertheless, starts a conversation. Frenchman: “You English folk eat the whole bread??” Englishman (in a bad mood): “Of course.” Frenchman: (after blowing a huge bubble) “We don’t. In France, we only eat what’s inside. The crusts we collect in a container, recycle it, transform them into croissants and sell them to England .” The Frenchman has a smirk on his face. The Englishman listens in silence. The Frenchman persists: “Do you eat jam with the bread??” Englishman: “Of Course.” Frenchman: (cracking his bubble-gum between his teeth and chuckling). “We don’t. In France we eat fresh fruit for breakfast, then we put all the peels, seeds, and leftovers in containers, recycle them, transform them into jam, and sell the jam to England .” After a moment of silence, The Englishman then asks: “Do you have sex in France ?” Frenchman: “Why of course we do”, he says with a big smirk. Englishman: “And what do you do with the condoms once you’ve used them?” Frenchman: “We throw them away, of course.” Englishman: “We don’t. In England , we put them in a container, recycle them, melt them down into bubble-gum, and sell them to France .”

VISA PANIC! This week’s headlines on Thai expat forums that a new ten year visa would be available sometime in the near future was initially greeted with some enthusiasm by their members, but this quickly dissipated as the story behind the headline became more apparent. Essentially, a new visa is being made available to people over 50 from a list of fourteen countries, with the explicit aim of promoting Thailand to both affluent people, and to boost the concept of ‘medical holidays’ here. The visa will be valid for five years, renewable for another five, although would still carry the requirement of 90 day reporting to immigration, and has been reported as costing 10,000 baht. Of course, such a visa does come with other financial strings attached, such as the requirement to have a monthly income of 100,000 baht, or 3 million baht in the bank, considerably more than the 65,000 baht income or 800,000 baht in the bank that is required for an annual extension for those over 50. The problem with the reporting was that it appears as if the translation from Thai was not as clear as it may have been, and the word ‘replace’ was used, which began a meltdown by some forum users thinking that the one year extension, often incorrectly referred to as the ‘retirement visa’, was being phased out, which would of course have serious repercussions for many expats resident in Thailand. While some plans and decisions made by the Thai authorities in the past may not have been well thought through in the eyes of expats, the panic in those forums was more due to this frequent misunderstanding of the terminology used by the

Immigration department than anything else, although there is also an underlying mistrust of the authorities that is often stoked by poor translations and misconceived ideas. The only actual visa that might be being replaced is the O-A visa, which is only available from a Thai Consulate or Embassy in a person’s own country, is valid and allows leave to remain for one year, and used carefully can actually allow someone to remain in Thailand for two years with just one trip out of Thailand in that time. Even so, it seems unlikely that this type of visa will disappear, as the new visa is only being made available to select countries, and the information made available so far does not indicate whether it can only be obtained outside of Thailand, or whether it is possible as a conversion of an existing visa. Over the years there have always been changes made to immigration rules, but invariably they have been accompanied by a ‘grandfathering’ for those already here under the old rules; while Thailand does not ‘owe’ any of us anything, they are also very unlikely to pull the rug from under us either. Most officials have significant discretion as to how to handle each individual situation, and there is normally some way of dealing with whatever you might face here, which is important to remember.

ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL It is now claimed that the Trump wall wasn’t meant to be a brick one, but a metaphorical wall to control movement between Mexico and the US. That should come as some relief to American tax payers, who should also be thankful they don’t have a royal palace to maintain either. But news of the actual Trump ‘wall’ doesn’t seem to have penetrated as far as Malaysia and Thailand, who have agreed to build a real one between the two countries. Thailands’ Defence Minister claims to have got the idea during a meeting with his Malaysian counterparts in Laos, and both countries have agreed to share the cost of the structure. To be fair some of it will actually be fencing, while some will be repairs to existing blockades. Strengthening of that southern border is long overdue to improve controls over drug trafficking, people smuggling etc. Perhaps even illegal logging and dodgy rice could also be tackled while they are at it? Back in that other la la land few people can have missed the sad story of the 14 year old English girl who won her legal battle to be frozen when she died of cancer. The un-named girls’ body is now Cryogenically preserved in a vat somewhere in Minnesota, after a court decided to disregard the objections of her father and consider only the girls’ clearly stated wish to have a chance of a new life in the future. And who could blame her, when faced with a terminal illness at an age when she should have had her whole life in front of her? At least she would have died with a little hope. The problem of course is that the hope created by cryogenics seems quite futile, with doctors and scientists claiming that body cells are destroyed by

the processes used in freezing. But whatever your own thoughts on the science and the odds, what would really happen if someone were to be cured and woken in say two hundred years time? How would they cope with no family support? There would be no close relatives, and a young girl could only hope to find some great great great nieces and nephews plus a few very distant cousins. Then there would be the inevitable publicity in a vastly different world. Presumably arrangements are made for trust finds and the like, otherwise that publicity could be needed to provide some income. Which raises other questions such as what happens if the Cryogenics company has financial difficulties while it still has a duty of care to its’ users? Or are these people just selling a dream.

On This Day

Fifty years ago, on November 25th 1966, the first TV link was made between Australia and the UK. Quite an achievement back then, and one which has brought us Neighbours. On the plus side TV has moved on dramatically, especially in the last ten years or so, which have brought us dozens of Freeview channels and enough dishes and widgets to watch pretty much anything from anywhere. So why didn’t the BBC realise that even with their years of broadcasting experience Amazon could do a much better job? Even before the launch of that new offering by the old Top Gear trio, Clarkson Hammond and Mays’ ‘Grand Tour’ on Amazon Prime has rave reviews, while the Beebs attempt to keep Top Gear alive with Chris Evans failed miserably. It’s enough to almost tempt me to splash out on Amazon Prime. Well - almost.

FEATURED GAME

SUNDAY 27TH NOVEMBER 2016 PREMIER LEAGUE Manchester Utd v West Ham Utd 23:30

These teams meet twice in 5 days - this clash, followed by the League Cup Quarter Final, also at Old Trafford. Both were disappointed last weekend with their respective draw and loss, likely feeling that they deserved more from the games. This league clash is equally important as the cup game, and both are likely to be entertaining, although it is highly probable that the line ups will be vastly different. Expect the away side to counter attack and the home side to dominate possession in both, but they are really tricky games to call; we are plumping for a narrow home win in the league, and a narrow away win in the cup.

POLICE APPEAL FOR INFORMATION IN SEARCH FOR THOUSANDS OF MISSING SPURS FANS

ENGLAND The Metropolitan Police have issued a public appeal for information as they search for thousands of Tottenham Hotspurs fans who appear to have gone missing since Tuesday evening. The appeal comes after vast numbers of fans described as “generally sociable and outspoken” abruptly stopped replying to any form of contact from around 10 pm on Tuesday. “Some people may think that it is a little early to be treating these as missing persons cases, but anything that seems out of character is better investigated sooner rather than later, and Spurs fans being this quiet is definitely out of character.” explained PC Simon Thompson, “We have traced a lot of their movements through social media, with a common theme of hailing Mauricio Pochettino as a tactical genius late last Saturday, and declaring Harry Kane the greatest player

in the world, then announcing where they would be watching the Chelsea game and posting score predictions right up until ten o’clock on Tuesday.” “Thirty seconds later they appear to have simply started vanishing en masse. I would urge anybody who has any information about their whereabouts to contact us immediately, as we have some hilarious memes we want to show them.”

A number of the fans have since turned up safe and sound, saying that they didn’t see any football during the week and “don’t follow it as closely as they used to”. The search for the rest continues, in what is believed to be the biggest missing persons case seen in the UK since thousands of Liverpool supporters suddenly vanished from public view in April 2014.
