INCOMPLETE HUA HIN - STILL A WORK IN PROGRESS

•In•our final issue of the year, we generally look back on the year just finishing, and we have actually HUA HIN

looked back at our last issue of 2015 as we write this, only to realise that any optimism we had for 2016 was entirely misplaced; so the question has to be asked - should we be optimistic about 2017? In some respects we think so, but more from the perspective that it can’t get any worse, than that there is any particular light at the end of the tunnel. However, the one event that everybody in Thailand had been dreading has now occurred, and without the drama that many feared, although there will undoubtedly still be some repercussions. The formation of the ASEAN economic bloc seems to have had absolutely no impact, positive or negative, on life in Thailand. Locally the Bluport mall opened, but seems rather to have spread the load and reduced trade elsewhere in the town rather than generate significant new business or customers, but that may well take a longer time to happen. The new year will see the launch of another ferry service, albeit slightly later than originally announced, with 12th January the most recent date suggested, and the renewed work on the landing pier suggests that this may be held to, in combination with the work in Pattaya. However it is looking increasingly likely that the first passengers arriving in Hua Hin will be arriving to a building site, followed by a demolition site, as the new Harbour 55 development is still unfinished, and the removal of the structures illegally encroaching on the beach adjacent appears to be imminent. 2017 may well turn out to be a year marking time for Hua Hin and Thailand; and that may be exactly what is needed. Finish what has been started before moving on. Whatever happens, Happy New Year to all our readers and advertisers, and thank you for sticking with us through 2016.
