major changes to the awol classifieds

•There • is no denying that the current low season, and the couple of years preceding it, have been among hua hin

the most difficult and lean times the town has seen since it became a major tourist destination, with many businesses struggling to survive, as tourism spending drops, and many expats returning to their home countries, while many who remain have had to tighten the purse strings, largely because of the continuing strength of the Thai baht, and rising prices. It is only possible to produce AWOL every week by virtue of our advertisers, most of whom, over the nearly nine years we have been publishing, have benefited from the exposure in the paper. This not only applies to businesses, but also the individuals who have used the classifieds, both free and paid, that have been a part of AWOL since day one, and we thank one and all for their support. As a result of current conditions, we have looked at ways to both maintain our offer of affordable advertising for all, while generating enough income to keep AWOL a viable concern, and our attention has now turned to the Classifieds; we have made a hard decision to end the free ads, and tried to rebalance this by reducing the prices we were charging for certain categories, and applying this price across the board. This change effectively represents a 70% drop against the prices we previously charged, as the standard Single ad price is now 300 baht for a 13 week run. We have also introduced new multi ad subscription packages, which reduce this price to between 50 and 100 baht per ad, as well as the option of Featured ads for an additional fee. Other minor changes have also been made, and you can find full details of the new deals on the Classifieds pages (14 and 15), and on the website (www.awolonline.net/ classifieds). Please also email us on classifieds@awolonline.net with any comments.

robbery Morris the jeweller called the police station to report a robbery. “You’ll never believe what happened, Officer. A van backed up to my shop, the doors opened and an elephant came out. He broke my plate glass window, stuck his trunk in, sucked up all the jewellery and climbed back into the truck. The doors closed and the van pulled away.” The desk sergeant said, “Could you tell me, for identification purposes, whether it was an Indian elephant or an African elephant?” “What’s the difference?” asked Morris. “Well,” said the sergeant, “an African elephant has great big ears and an Indian elephant has little ears.” “Come to think of it, I couldn’t see his ears,” said the jeweller. ....”He had a balaclava on his head.”

marry in haste... A man met a beautiful lady and decided he wanted to marry her right away. She said, ‘But we don’t know anything about each other.’ He said, ‘That’s all right, we’ll learn about each other as we go along.’ So she consented, they were married, and off they went on a honeymoon at a very nice resort. One morning they were lying by the pool, when he got up off of his towel, climbed up to the 10 metre board and did a two and a half tuck, followed by three rotations in the pike position, at which point he straightened out and cut the water like a knife. After a few more demonstrations, he came back and lay down on the towel. She said, ‘That was incredible!’ He said, ‘I used to be an Olympic diving champion. You see, I told you we’d learn more about each other as we went along.’ So she got up, jumped in the pool and started doing lengths. After seventy-five lengths she climbed out of the pool, lay down on her towel and was hardly out of breath. He said, ‘That was incredible! Were you an Olympic endurance swimmer?’ ‘No,’ she said, ‘I was a prostitute in Glasgow but I worked both sides of the Clyde!

alas, poor culture, we knew you well Last week saw the beginning and end of my first foray into the world of Shakespeare. Many people love the work of the Bard, and I now admire those fans for their patience and historical knowledge, because act one of Richard 3rd went right over my head in a cloud of gobbledegook. To be fair act two improved dramatically with it’s battle action, lighting, drumming and death scene. The actors were excellent (how do they remember all that stuff)? and it passed a Saturday afternoon with the prospect of eating out to follow. But from now on I’ll stick to the film versions on TV when there really isn’t anything else at all to do, and leave the books and plays of the Bard to the afficionados. The Shakespeare foray was of course inspired by Hulls’ year as UK City of Culture, which, after a great start on New Years Day, seems to be slowing down a bit. There have been some good art installations around, but none seem to remain in place for very long, while trying to get tickets online for the (mostly free) events would test the patience of a saint. Let’s hope that the anticipated legacy for our city turns out to be as successful as that of Liverpool, which was European Capital of Culture in 2008. On the 19th of this month Liverpools legacy is showcased yet again in it’s 8th year of late night ‘culture crawls’, which involves over 900 artists and performers on the streets and in late opening venues, including the Tate Liverpool gallery. Only time will tell whether Hull will learn a thing or two from the city at the other end of the M62. Now, all you keen photographers in Thailand will know that there are plenty of things there worth capturing on film - and

not just in the bars! The wealth of scenery, flora and fauna, temples and street life, and underwater shots for those brave enough, could keep you occupied for years. But there is one view of Thailand which you might not have seen yet, and will never be able to capture yourselves. Major Tim Peake, the British astronaut who spent 6 months on the International Space Station, took plenty of photographs as he circled the earth, and last November a book containing over 150 of his pictures was published. One in particular stands out. A shot of the Gulf of Thailand at night, taken from a low angle looking north, showing the green and white lights of hundreds of fishing boats, crowned by a huge white glow which is Bangkok. Many other pictures in the book, entitled ‘Hello - Is This Planet Earth? ‘ are just as stunning, and some of them, including the Thai fishing boats, can easily be found on the Guardian website by searching Tim Peake. Unfortunately the online images don’t do justice to the glossy pages of the book, which at 15 pounds or so sterling is very good value. And no - I’m not on commission!

On This Day

May 19th 1890 marked the birth of Ho Chi Minh, who became the first President of Vietnam. It was also the date on which, in 1962, Marilyn Monroe serenaded President Kennedy with her unforgettable rendition of Happy Birthday. That normally mundane little song is one which has stood the test of time, and next week we take a look at the surprising number of bands and musicians who can still draw in the crowds when they should be drawing their pensions.

classifieds awol classifieds are changing!

After an extensive review of our Classified advertising pricing and display, we have decided to change much about how we will proceed with immediate effect. The key changes are summarised on our front page, and below you will find all the details of how to place a classified advert with us, and how much it will cost. Please note that we are no longer offering free classified adverts; however, we are reducing the cost of our former ‘Premium’ adverts considerably, and applying these prices across the board. We are also introducing ‘Featured’ ads, which have extra prominence with a box around them and the option of shading behind the text.

Any advert can be made a Featured ad by either paying an additional fee, in the case of Single ads, of two additional ads, or by using up two additional ads in a subscription pack. So for a Single ad that costs 300 baht, to make this Featured will cost an additional 600 baht, making a Pricing total of 900 baht. This additional fee or use of pack ads We now offer four pricing options that apply to any remains the same regardless of the number of words in category of advert. the ad. Examples of Featured ads can be seen in the ads 1. Single advert (25 words or less) for 13 issues 300 baht following this updated information. These are existing 2. Extra Subscription allowing up to 36 Single ads for 13 Placing your ad(s) issues each. 2700 baht 4. Extra Plus Subscription allowing up to 72 Single ads of This remains largely unchanged from before; the options 13 issues each. 3600 baht are outlined in the shaded box below. Adverts of longer than 25 words will either require purchasing further Single ads in the case of option 1, or using more of the ads in the subscription pack. The same applies to wishing to run an advert for longer than 13 weeks/issues, and this is where the subscription packs work out as great value, as the Basic pack would allow for three ads to run for one year, or six ads to run for six months, for example. A further note on the subscription packs is that AWOL has no objection to businesses or people joining together to use a single pack between them, similar to the AWOL Bazaar.

Match Report: Vana Nava Hua Hin City 0 – 1 Muangkan Utd Many supporters had taken advantage of the President’s new policy of free admission for supporters wearing Hua Hin colours. Attendance for this game was definitely up on previous matches. Of course, it’s performance on the pitch that would make those supporters want to return next week. The pitch was in good condition considering the horrific rain showers we’d had, and the bad weather was holding off. Larger crowd, fine weather, what about the football? We must remember, Muangkan are riding high in the league, and must look favourites to qualify for the Champions League. The stage was set. From the outset, Hua Hin seemed oblivious to the fact that there was a goal mouth at the other end of the pitch that they needed to penetrate. Time after time, they would pick up the ball in their own half, pass it to a team mate a few yards away, on to another team mate (often back towards their own goal), etc. Invariably, they would lose the ball before it even got to the opposition’s half. Muangkan players just had to lie in wait near the half way line, and wait for either a bad pass, or the opportunity to intercept the ball. This style was so frustrating to watch. On the occasions Hua Hin managed to venture into the opposing half, the more experienced players basically hacked the Hua Hin youngsters off the ball. With many Muangkan players already booked, Hua Hin players were allowed to play better football in the last 30 minutes, and did create a few chances, but unfortunately there were no forwards available with that killer instinct, and any chances were wasted. Muangkan’s goal came mid-way through the first half. It was nothing spectacular, just a well taken goal. It was a rare opportunity for either team. Neither keeper was really troubled outside of that. Hua Hin were not beaten by a good footballing team, and must take hope as Muangkan are currently Champions League favourites – the gap is not that wide. With the transfer window opening on 1 June, we must retain hope. It’s probably too late for this season, but at least we can build a team to take the league by storm next season.

Sunday 21st May 2017 PREMIER LEAGUE Arsenal v Everton 21:00 With all other issues decided, the only question mark left is which two of three teams will be in the top four out of Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City. City only need a draw at Watford, Liverpool need to match Arsenal’s result, with the Reds at home to already relegated Middlesbrough, and Arsenal at home to Everton, who themselves cannot change their position of seventh. Given the Gunner’s recent run we expect them to win, but all in vain as the others should too. And that may well seal Arsene Wenger’s fate - we think he will walk away if they fail to qualify for the Champion’s League, as this may also result in a number of players also leaving, and make it more difficult to attract the players they need for a title push.

Rooney to stay at Old trafford as statue outside club shop

••

uk WAYNE Rooney has pledged to remain at Old Trafford next season, completely immobile and immortalised in brass. The England striker has moved to quash speculation that he may find a new club this summer, instead insisting that he will stay with Manchester United, albeit in a strictly ornamental sense. Jose Mourinho said: “Over the years, we’ve seen Rooney’s role evolve from a goal-getting striker to a deep-lying forward to a bench warmer, so it makes sense that his next move is to become an inanimate cast outside the club shop. “People could hang their umbrellas on his arm. “Of course there will be some nostalgia as Wayne is slowly entombed in his mould and coated in 200-degree celsius molten brass, but despite his screams of agony we all know it’s a great opportunity for him. We feel the scene will be reminiscent of
