local farmers face ‘the elephant in the room’

•Wild• elephants are causing increasing problems once again in parts of the Hua Hin area, as they have hua hin

been involved in several incidents with local farmers, eating and destroying their crops. One local durian farmer said that the elphants had eaten her durian crop that was worth an estimated 200,000 baht, leaving her in a serious financial predicament. Another elephant was pictured taking pineapples from a pickup truck that was taking them from Hua Hin to Kui Buri. The area where this is reported happening is Tambon Huai Sat Yai, and it is believed that this zone is now on the animals’ radar because of fencing erected to prevent similar problems in nearby Tambon Padeng. This follows reports in 2015 of elephants being aggressive towards vehicles in Khao Yai National Park, with one YouTube video of an elephant sitting on and crushing a vehicle gaining over half a million views, while a lady motorcyclist on the Hua Hin - Pala U Road was killed by a bull elephant in December 2014. The current situation, while difficult for those affected, only goes to show how careful people need to be in areas where elephants have roamed free for decades, and where previously they had the pick of the fruit they wanted, wherever and whenever they wanted it. Rather than this being an elephant problem, it is really a human problem, as we have steadily encroached on their territory. There will be no easy answer to this ‘conflict’, and we can only hope that neither elephants nor humans get harmed while one is found, either deliberately or accidentally. Wild elephants are quite unpredictable, particularly in mating season, so be careful if driving in areas where they are found.
