has the hua hin jazz festival found it’s mojo again?

•This• weekend sees the return of the Jazz Festival to Hua Hin, a once annual event that has suffered some hua hin

setbacks in recent years after it had established itself as a major draw for visitors to the town. The line up this year sees some familiar faces mixed with some new blood, and appears to be heading back towards the format that proved so successful in the early years of the event. Artists from Thailand will be joined on two stages, an Open stage and the Main stage, by performers from Japan, Australia, USA, Denmark, and the UK. The Main stage will be located on the beach next to the Centara Grand Resort, while the Open stage will be on the beach access road that runs between Centara Villas and the Centara Grand, the continuation of Damnoernkasem Road (Soi 61), along with a number of other stalls and events in both areas. Both stages will have acts on both Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th June, with the Open stage having a more fluid lineup which does not have a set schedule; the Main stage does have a schedule, beginning at 6pm and running to 11pm; the running order (Thai unless stated) on Saturday is Abacus (U.S.A.), Malene Mortensen (Denmark), Koh Mr.Saxman & The Sound Of Siam feat. Pui Duangpon/ Alex Foster /Vladimire Cetkar and JAZZKAMIKAZE (Denmark); on the Sunday the artists (in order) will be HUA HIN Connection Feat. Peter Gilligan, Asia7 feat. Thanis Sriklindee, The SwingKings, and the J-JAZZ All Stars (Japan). Entrance is free, but there will probably be some VIP areas that will have a charge. You can find full details and last minute updates on either the website, www.huahininterjazz.com, or Facebook page HuaHinJazzFest.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is....Drink like a fish Drink heavily, especially of alcoholic drink. Clearly an allusion to fishes’ close association with water and their apparent open-mouthed taking in of water. Freshwater fish actually take in water by absorption rather than by drinking, although sea fish do actively drink seawater. The phrase is known since 1640 and appears in Fletcher and Shirley’s The night-walker, or the little theife, from that date: “Give me the bottle, I can drink like a Fish now, like an Elephant.” ‘Drink like an elephant’ didn’t catch on. There is a more recent potential boost to use ‘drink like a fish’ - at least for Californian Valley girls. In January 2005 a press release for the Dalian Fisherman’s Song Maritime Biological Brewery in China, said that they had developed a fermentation process to make fish into wine. So now, you can ‘drink, like, a fish’.

airports, space food and quiet reflection It’s that time of the year when any annual decorating projects take place here in the home of THAB. Those jobs many of us try to put off, or simply hire someone else to do, but which this year bring with them the sobering thought of hundreds of people in London who no longer have a home at all. That tragic high rise fire in Kensington, which has left many without family members, friends or neighbours, and all of them without their possessions or hope for the future. Enquiries into the cause of the fire, and more importantly why it spread so quickly, could take months if not years, but London Mayor Sadiq Khan has pointed the finger at years of neglect by both local and national government, and subject to the formal investigation there seems no reason to doubt him. We Brits like to think that our country is a world leader in the fields of construction and safety - well ahead of countries like Thailand for example, yet this isn’t the first time we have been found to be sadly lacking. Across the UK there are hundreds of similar high rise blocks of flats, many dating back to the 1960’s, when the ideal solution to housing problems was to build upwards. In fact at the time it did seem like a sensible idea, and here in Hull at least those flats were not intended to house large families, so the realisation that families of up to six people, possibly more, were housed way up there in Grenfell Tower was a shock. As well as highlighting failures in building and maintainance, the issue of families with children having to live like that in what should be a ‘first world’ country surely has to be high on the agenda. Everything else which is going on pales into insignificance this week. It isn’t easy to lighten up, but let’s at least try. First with the introduction of fish and chips into space. On June 13th the honour of sending the first portion of this UK delicacy into space went to Hull based and award winning Papas chippy, and the fish was of course haddock. It was Papas way of celebrating their award, and they did it in style with a wedge of lemon on top of the meal. Something which is still considered to be quite posh in these parts. Space being what it is the haddock, chips and lemon had to be firmly glued together in its’ container, and only stayed up there a few hours, hanging on to a weather balloon before falling back to earth. But plans are also afoot for the launch of a pattie and chips into space on June 27th. For those who don’t know what a pattie is - probably most of

you - basically it is seasoned mashed potato battered and deep fried, traditionally served with chips. A feast of carbs which can be enhanced by liberal applications of salt, vinegar and ketchup. Virtually unknown outside Hull (no surprise there) the meal has been chosen by the BBC as a way of introducing local children to science. The BBC Radio Humberside Space Mission is due to blast off this week, on June 23rd, although it might deliver a bigger blast if accompanied by a traditional portion of mushy peas. Good news for expats last week with the findings of a survey of the worlds 10 worst airports. The survey, by ‘Air Help’, a company specialising in flight compensation cases, found that while Suvarnhabumi airport ranked at number 9, the UK did even worse with Gatwick, Stansted and Edinburgh all in the bottom 10. The survey, which rated 76 airports for punctuality, quality and service also covered the worlds 10 best, with top place in that category going to Changi airport, Singapore. No surprise there then. On the subject of airports, on June 23rd 1940 Amsterdams’ Schipol airport became a target for allied bombing. Opened as a military airbase in 1916, by 1940 Schipol was also a civilian airport housing most of the KLM fleet, and had a huge production facility for military aircraft. It suffered heavy damage in 1940 when Germany invaded Holland shortly before the allied raid, and again when German forces retreated at the end of the war leaving destruction in their wake. Given the way in which Schipol bounced back after the war and grew into what it is today, Departure Gate D6 leaves a lot to be desired. And finally - also last week Thailand became the scene for one of those ‘don’t try this at home’ incidents, when a zoo keeper in Samui put his head in a crocodiles’ mouth. The croc seemed to be mesmerised as the keeper stroked its’ open jaws with a thin stick, but soon became bored with the game. You have been warned....

LOCAL SPORTS hua hin city F.C

Hua Hin City F. C. is the local professional team formed in 2011, playing their matches at the Takiab Stadium in Khao Takiab. results saturday 17th june 2017 Hua Hin City 0 - 1 Nonthaburi FC

match report Hua Hin City FC 0 – 1 Nonthaburi FC Probably the largest crowd of the season turned out at Takiab Stadium to witness the changes that had happened since the end of Leg 1, which was just 3 weeks ago i.e. Many Leg 1 players had returned to their studies at university; A lot of new players had been recruited for Leg 2; The club had recruited a new head coach, Sebastien Roques; and the team would be wearing their brand new kit, brandishing new sponsors. Expectations were very high, and the team played well in all areas of the field except where it mattered – in front of goal. Even then, they could be excused because the FIXTURES Nonthaburi keeper played out of his skin. Unfortunately, we still need a dedicated saturday 24th june 2017 centre-forward. That position should be filled in a couple of days’ time. IPE Samut Sakhon v Hua Hin City 18:00 Despite the team not being quite complete, balls were going from defence to Dorian in midfield, who in very quick time moved them out to the wingers who were also thai League 4 very good. Movement of the ball was excellent. Hua Hin put ball after ball into the Western Region table danger area, but were thwarted by the keeper or giant centre-half every time. Team P GD PTS Nonthaburi’s goal, which came midway through the first half was a bad mistake in 1 Suphanburi B 15 +23 38 several areas. Wichan came for a ball, leaving his goal undefended. Defenders were 2 Assumption United 15 +13 33 watching the ball, rather than their man. In the end it was a simple header into an 3 Muangkan United 15 +12 32 empty goal mouth – game over. 4 BTU United 15 +3 26 From the minute they took the lead, Nonthaburi employed some very frustrating 5 Look Isan 15 +2 22 gamesmanship. They were constantly disrupting the flow of the game by feigning 6 Ratchaburi Mitr Phol B 15 −6 19 injury, and a Hua Hin player would put the ball out of play while everybody waited 7 Nonthaburi 15 −5 18 for the player to stand up again. This tactic was employed regularly for at least 30 minutes before the referee started booking players for deliberate time wasting. When 8 Hua Hin City 15 −7 12 it is so blatant, one wonders why the losing team participates in this ‘gentlemanly 9 IPE Samut Sakhon United 15 −13 12 conduct’, when the conduct of the players feigning injury is far from gentlemanly. 10 Pathum Thani United 15 −22 1 All in all, Hua Hin’s football has improved in many ways, and the results will start coming. When we gain confidence by putting a couple of results together, the side will become increasingly stronger. hash house harriers

(Daily Star) Arsenal have told Barcelona that defender Hector Bellerin, 22, is not for sale and are confident the Spaniard will stay this summer. (Independent) And the North London club have opened talks with midfielder Aaron Ramsey, 26, over a contract extension to avoid further uncertainty over his future. (Daily Telegraph) Juventus have lined up Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian, 27, as their preferred replacement for defender Dani Alves, who looks set to leave the Serie A champions. (Goal.com) Alves, 34, is ready to agree a two-year deal with Manchester City once he resolves his departure from Juventus. (Daily Mail) Manchester United would be Cristiano Ronaldo’s only choice if he opted for a Premier League return, according to the 32-year-old’s advisers. (Talksport) Swansea City will sign Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham, 19, on a one-year loan deal. (Daily Mirror) Chelsea are planning to loan out 22-yearold centre-back Kurt Zouma this summer as they look to sign Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci, 30, and Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk, 25. (Sun) Meanwhile, the Baggies have made a £12m offer for Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez, 27, although his former club Burnley and Newcastle United are also interested. (Daily Mail) Chelsea are close to the signing of Middlesbrough winger Adama Traore, 21. (Sport via Daily Star)

that pesky taxman Cristiano Ronaldo hopeful of move to Cayman Islands

••

The shock news will have alerted European giants such as Bayern Munich, Paris St Germain and Manchester United into plotting a big money transfer. However, Ronaldo is surprisingly keen on the prospect of joining many clubs within the Caribbean. When questioned about what attracted him to the places, Ronaldo responded
