e-cigarettes - legal or illegal in thailand?
•An• issue that has been runbling on in Thailand for some months now has been hitting the headlines thailand
recently, in another example of how erratic the enforcement of the law here can be; in this instance we are talking about e-cigarettes and vaping. On the one hand the law seems to be quite clear that, essentially, e-cigarettes are viewed the same as regular cigarettes as far as where one can smoke or ‘vape’; however there are specific laws regarding importing e-cigarettes with the intent to sell them, and this is deemed illegal, and the penalties if found guilty are pretty hefty, with reports suggesting that this can be up to ten years imprisonment. In recent weeks though, stories have been emerging about foreigners being arrested for ‘vaping’ in public and being accused of import and threatened with this kind of serious jail time even though those detained claim that they only possess e-cigarettes for personal use, or that they were purchased in Thailand. Most, if not all, of these ended up paying a significant fine (the importing e-cigarettes law states up to 500,000 baht) and had their equipment confiscated. The proper fine for smoking in nonsmoking areas (most public spaces, any indoor venue unless there is a specific smoking room) is 5,000 baht, while discarding a cigarette butt can also be a fine of 2,000 baht for littering. We have not heard of any stories of people facing this in Hua Hin, but given the recent events elsewhere we felt it timely to warn anyone who uses e-cigarettes to be a little circumspect; it does seem somewhat absurd that anyone using a device designed to help people kick the smoking habit should face such potential penalties, but this is a lesson in how laws are sometimes applied in Thailand, that have nothing to do with some legitimate concerns expressed over the possible health hazards of vaping.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is....La-la land A notional place characterized by fantasy, self-absorption and blissful lack of touch with reality. ‘La-la land’ isn’t listed on maps, but the label does refer to a real place, that is, Los Angeles, which is of course widely referred to as L.A. The expression has taken on a meaning built partly from the place name and partly from the supposed frivolous and eccentric behaviour of the city’s movie community. The term began to be used by the general public around the late 1970s and both of the above sources of the expression are found in print in 1979:
Jeffrey: Great. Real mature. Foley: I am not listening to Jeffrey, but he’s still talking. That gesture became something of a cliché amongst Hollywood types for a few years. Despite all the associations of ‘la-la land’ with late 20th century Los Angeles, the earliest use of the expression in print is from long ago and far away. A heading in the Los Angeles Times in January 1925 ran: Miniature motor cars developed by French engineers amaze American government. Commerce Department motor head home again; describes one-man taxis in ‘La-La Land’.
Washington Post, 4th February - “Monday night in Lalaland is Presumably, the author had in mind the phrase ‘ooh-la-la’, not like Monday night in, say, Washington.” which was in vogue as a recent import from France into the USA in 1925, when that early form of ‘La-la land’ was coined. Los Angeles Times, 28th July - “Heather was in la-la land after The phrase never caught on with that meaning, although it drinking the LSD-spiked iced tea intended for Diana.” might have come in handy as an alternative to the “cheeseeating surrender monkeys” line that the The Simpsons’ writer Another link between the phrase and Los Angeles was the 1984 Ken Keeler used to articulate the USA’s prevailing anti-French film Beverly Hills Cop. In a scene where Eddie Murphy’s lead sentiment in 1995. character Axel Foley was being criticised by fellow cop Jeffrey Friedman, Foley stuck his fingers in his ears and sang “la la la” Is there an English phrase or saying that to drown out the reproach:

signs of the times Language differences between the UK and the USA have always been a source of some amusement. Taps are fawcets, boots are trunks, autumn is fall, and recently there has been the strange case of Taylor Swifts’ ass, which as we all know is really a donkey. But in the context of the Taylor Swift court case it is actually her bottom which hit the headlines, with Swift alleging that it had been groped by a DJ while they were posing for a photo. According to Swift it was no ordinary grope either, because as well as being unwanted and therefore an assault, the guy hung on to a handful of her naked flesh for quite some time. Now, dear lady readers, the question is what would you do in that situation? Yes - either step smartly away from the offending hand or give the offender a good slap. Preferably both. But it seems that Ms Swift has such composure that the photo opportunity took priority. Regardless of the outcome of the case you have to wonder what kind of message that sends to her legions of young fans. There was a time of course when the odd pat on the donkey was par for the course, especially in the work place, and there wasn’t really an appropriate response, let alone a court case. Much depended on the seniority of the person delivering the pat, or whether or not he was fanciable. That sounds very demeaning to women now, and far from politically correct, but that’s the way it was. Now political correctness seems to be getting out of hand, with some people taking it to the extreme. For example - do you really care much about the signs on Marks and Spencers toilet doors? Isn’t it enough to be able to aim for the right door when you are in a hurry? Not according to those who have complained about signs that discriminate, because those on the ladies toilets show when there are baby changing facilities within, while those on the the mens don’t. Following the resulting fracas M and S have bowed to public opinion and changed the offending signs, to show that babies can be changed in the mens loos as well. Speaking as one who often finds the client interview room at her place of work occupied by a mother changing a baby on her desk I have little sympathy for toilet sign fanatics. I do think Tesco have got it right though, with separate baby changing rooms in their larger stores, but even they have made a shockingly sexist mistake with their childrens shoes. The problem is with the motifs on the soles of school shoes - pink butterflies for the girls, and dinosaurs for the boys, which one teacher has claimed reinforces gender stereotyping.
Never mind, when those boys and girls grow up they will be overjoyed if they can all afford the same colour soles - Laboutin red.
On This Day Much more important things were happening years ago on August 18th. In 1989 the Woodstock festival had over run into its fourth day, which was very good for the closing act, Jimi Hendrix. Meanwhile back in 1937 the Toyota Motor Company was founded on this date, making it an unbelievable 80 years old, especially for those who remember buying a Corolla.

match report Hua Hin City FC 2 – 1 Ratchaburi B We were riding high after our victory last week, and the team was almost back to full strength. After such a poor start to the season, today’s opponents, Ratchaburi were currently in the position we are striving to finish in, 5th. A win today could see us climb to 7th place. A win was essential. Hua Hin soon took command of the game, and created numerous scoring chances in the first half, but were unable to turn a chance into a score. In the end, Ratchaburi were very unlucky not to go into half time without the advantage. Totally against the run of play, they had the easiest of chances. They could only look on in disbelief when the ball hit the cross bar, bounced on the goal line and away to safety. The second half started in much the same manner. However, Amos found himself on the receiving end of a series of defensive errors, and gratefully accepted what was little more than a tap in. Sometimes you just have to accept these little gifts. The game continued with very little danger to Hua Hin’s lead. Then following wave after wave of Hua Hin attacks, Amos grabbed his second to make him Hua Hin’s leading scorer (particularly good when you consider he’s only been with us a few weeks). Almost straight from the kick off, Ratchaburi grabbed a consolation with what must be a contender for goal of the season. It was a real screamer that gave Natchapon absolutely no chance, and denied him his 3rd clean sheet of the season. Last week’s victory was a little flat, but today’s victory was very entertaining, with some lovely football played. Hua Hin finished the day in their highest position of the season in 7th place. A win at Nonthaburi next week will see us knocking on the door of that coveted 5th place finish.

Sunday 20th August 2017 Premier League Spurs v Chelsea 22:00 Two teams who at time of writing had not strengthened their squads, but who had very different opening day results; however neither team particularly impressed, with Spurs only getting their breakthrough after their opponents were reduced to ten men, while Chelsea never gave themselves a chance, with poor discipline leaving them with only nine players. Early season encounters are particularly hard to predict, but derbies and ‘top six’ games do have a tendency to be draws, and that is exactly what we think will happen here, despite Spurs being at ‘home’, or rather at Wembley while their stadium is redeveloped. Both teams are in urgent need of new players, because injuries or suspensions to key performers like Kane and Alli for Spurs, or Cahill and Fabregas (who will miss this game) leaves them short.

are you a conte? chelsea manager under pressure
••
uk Following defeat in their opening day fixture against lowly Burnley, Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has had the pressure ramped up on him as last season’s Premier League champions attempt to defend their title. Questions have already been asked about the lack of signings at Stamford Bridge this summer, and with two players suspended following their red cards in last weekend’s game, the Chelsea squad is looking a bit thin. It has now emerged, however, that the reason for the lack of signings now is due to what some club insiders are calling ‘absolute madness’. According to these reports, Conte will only consider signing players whose names are either double entendres or rude words, like his own, in an attempt to avoid the constant ribbing he has had in his professional career. For Chelsea fans this will have a familiar sound, having experienced the weird antics of Rafa Benitez and Jose Mourinho.
Left: Fans from all of Chelsea’s rivals will hope that they can pull off the signing of Juankar
Chelsea scouts are apparently under strict instructions to only present players with names that make him giggle, such as the German midfielder, Lars Bender, the Argentinian goalkeeper, Fabián Assmann, the French right back Rod Fanni, the Belgian defensive midfielder, Mark De Man, and the Spanish winger Juankar. With Kante already in the side, fans can expect to see quite an amusing
team sheet in the future, although the majority will be glad that the likes of David Seamen and Danny Shittu have long since retired. Conte was reportedly very disappointed that Stefan Kuntz and Ralf Minge turned down roles at the club as coach and sporting director respectively.
