the best and worst of thailand in one week
•In•the week following the magnificent and majestic ceremonies Thailand organised to say farewell to thailand
their greatest ever monarch, which displayed the very best of what Thais are capable of, there has once again been stark evidence of the very opposite as well. We take absolutely no pleasure in pointing out or highlighting problems that exist here, but this week the lifeblood of tourism in Hua Hin, the beaches, have once again been in national and international headlines, as a huge pile of trash was deposited along the coast by the winds and high seas generated by the storm raging a little way south of the town. Following the cigarette ban and the dead fish, pictures of garbage strewn beaches are the last thing the town or it’s tourists want to see. The good in this story is that the deputy governor of Prajuab Khiri Khan and local municipal chiefs commandeered army personnel and tourist police to quickly deal with the problem, and cleared a 5 kilometer stretch of sand from the Centara Grand Resort and Villa south to Khao Takiap. with more than a little help from the local Trash Hero group, who are out almost every weekend tclearing the trash. As we reported only a few weeks ago when smoking was banned on the beach due to the proliferation of cigarette butts left behind, this is part of a wider problem in the world, but also a particular issue in Thailand. Most visitors to Thailand are appalled at many people’s approach to litter, and it is a common site to see rubbish on the side of the roads, on the beach and being thrown carelessly from moving vehicles. This is not a question of the authorities or even individuals clearing this up, but one of a general bad attitude to the issue of litter; it really is a question of educating people to look after the place we live in, and AWOL will be the first to applaud any official initiative to do so. As a footnote, please pass on or dispose of this copy responsibly - we are told it makes an excellent window cleaner!

IS HIRING!
We are the only weekly newspaper in this area and we are looking for two motivated and engaging people to work in the key areas of sales and distribution. Requirements: • Thai Nationals • Good understanding of spoken and written English • Well presented • Previous experience in a sales environment useful but not a necessity • Ability to work to deadlines • Own transport (not essential but preferred) The positions will involve selling advertising space in the newspaper and online as the major task, as well as maintaining relations with existing customers and dealing with renewals of ads, and coordinating and monitoring the efficient distribution of the paper every week. Conditions: The positions are full time jobs and the successful candidates will be expected to work 40 hours a week; however these hours will need to be spread flexibly, as this is not a normal 9 to 5, Monday to Friday office job as many existing and potential customers are only available to discuss their requirements or settle invoices in the evenings or at weekends. The initial salary offered to the successful candidates will vary depending on previous experience and abilities, but will be in the range of 10,000 to 15,000 baht a month, plus any extra commission earned through performance. There will be sales targets which if achieved will generate this extra income. We anticipate this could result in an income averaging at least 20,000 baht a month, with exceptional candidates capable of earning much more. There will be a probation period of 115 days for anyone hired, with an assessment of performance at the end of it. Application: Please send an email to info@awolonline.net with the subject line “Employment Application” and include your reasons for wanting to work for AWOL, your previous work history, your personal details including phone number and address, and any other information you believe is relevant to your application. Closing date for applications is 17th November 2017

the axis of tea-vil? On November 3rd 1957 a poor unsuspecting Moscow soi dog was launched into space aboard Sputnik 2. Even back then there was some outrage when Russian authorities announced that the dog, Laika, had never been meant to return to earth alive. Todays’ animal rights groups would probably have ensured that the flight didn’t get off the ground at all, which shows how much attitudes have changed. At least Laika did her bit to pave the way for human space travel, even though they could surely have used a rabbit instead. (This is where that emoji image of a yellow face ducking for cover would come in very handy, but we don’t have the technology.) Just six years after Sputnik 2, on November 22nd 1963, came an event which was to really shake the world and begin the mother of all conspiracy theories. The assassination of President John F Kennedy. And now the release of an apparently jumbled and incomplete dossier of previously top secret documents has opened up yet more theories. Not least the revelation that an English Soviet spy from Grimsby may have been involved in, or at least maybe been aware of, the assassination plan. The news of those maybes came as no surprise to Hull folk, whose mistrust of anything that comes out of Grimsby has been well documented for decades. Another place we tend not to trust very much is China. We do like its’ cheap goods even when they don’t last very long, but tutted over our chop sueys at its’ radical method of curbing population growth. Now we are horrified to learn that it has the worlds’ second largest economy. But look closer and all is not what it seems. With per capita income at just a fraction of that of advanced countries, China is still classed as ‘developing’, and Chinese millennials* are beginning to make their concerns known. Concerns which really aren’t so different from those of young people in the UK and other so called developed countries. Things like not being able to get on the housing ladder, record numbers of college graduates competing for less jobs with starting salaries reduced by over 15 per cent on last year, rents in Beijing increased by a third since 2012. All the things they were brought up to expect from a growing economy are becoming unattainable, including dreams of good careers and marriage, but in China it isn’t so easy to complain about the state of the nation, so despondent millennials are turning to tea. It’s all thanks to a fellow millennial, 29 year old Xiang, who has cashed in on a social media trend known as ‘sang’ by opening
a chain of tea stalls called ‘Sung’. No, you are not in the middle of the Sound of Music, you just have to know your sangs from your sungs. ‘Sang’ is a way for millennials to share their feelings of despair on social media without drawing too much attention from the Powers That Be, while Sung Tea comes in a range of flavours named to reflect those levels of despair. Names such as ‘achieved absolutely nothing black tea’ and ‘sitting around and waiting to die’ mocha milk tea, provide a way of communicating feelings with like minded manic depressives in a way which is not directly critical of the regime, and have proved to be a winning formula for Xiang. Since opening his first permanent Sung Tea stall in Beijing in July, he already has others in 12 cities. But he hasn’t been without his critics. In August a Communist Party rag ‘Peoples Daily’ editorial accused Sung Tea of peddling ‘mental opium’, and urged readers - ‘Stand up and be brave. Refuse to drink Sung Tea, choose to walk the right path and live the fighting spirit of our era.’ Aren’t you glad you live in Thailand? Just go easy on the drink driving and have a happy Loy Khratong. *The definition of a millennial is anyone aged between 18 and 35. China has around 380 million.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is.... Young turk A young person, full of new ideas and impatient for change. The figurative expression ‘young turks’ meaning ‘the new breed, impatient for change’ began to be used in the early 20th century. William Safire, in The new language of politics: an anecdotal dictionary of catchwords, slogans, and political usage, 1968, referred to a group of US politicians who, in 1929, were called the ‘Young Turks’: These new Republican warriors were called the Young Turks, a band of about 20 who had mutinied against the feeble leadership of the Old Guard. For Senators they were young men (average age: 56). Safire also included a quotation, which states that Winston Churchill used the phrase during the Bermuda Conference of 1953. Churchill digressed from the agenda to discuss imperialism with Dwight Eisenhower, expressing his doubts about the wisdom of self-government for peoples not yet ready for it. When the American President disagreed with a portion of the Prime Minister’s argument, Churchill smiled and said: “You’re just like the Young Turks in my government.” Neither the US Senate of 1929 nor the British government of 1953 contained anyone of Turkish nationality, so where did the expression come from? It could hardly be simpler. Unusually for a figurative expression the meaning is literal; the first ‘young turks’ were exactly that - young Turks. Selim III was Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1789 to 1807.
He made the first major attempts to modernize the army along European lines and to rejuvenate the Turkish empire. These reforms were supported by a band of youthful followers who favoured modernisation but opposed by the more conservative older generation. There are many newspaper reports from around that time that refer to the modernists as ‘young Turks’ in a purely literal sense, that is, they were young and they were Turkish. For example, this piece from The Salisbury and Winchester Journal, January 1828: The young Turks, of all classes, are exercising themselves in the use of arms in the European manner. The enthusiasm for the Sultan has risen to the highest pitch. This dispute rumbled on for over a century and eventually a Turkish nationalist party that supported the reformation of the absolute monarchy of the Ottoman Empire was formed and started the Turkish revolution of 1908. It was led by The Three Pashas - Mehmed Talaat (aged 34 in 1908), Ismail Enver (27) and Ahmed Djemal (36), who were widely known as the ‘Young Turks’. Soon after that and, as we have seen above, as early as 1929, any group of people passionate for change became known as ‘young turks’.

sunday 5th november 2017 PREMIER LEAGUE Chelsea v Manchester United 23:30 This is a game that both teams will be desperate to take three points from, as both are starting to fall behind leaders Manchester City; clearly Chelsea’s need is greater, but both teams will have been hoping to see an Arsenal win in the preceding game, that would alleviate the pressure a little. Despite the need to win, we can’t see either manager being gung ho, so we expect a very cautious and cagey game that will have very few goals. Both teams have plenty of firepower, but currently Chelsea’s midfield have the edge in creativity, so we expect the away side to pack that area to nullify them and hope for chances on the counter attack. Two exceptional goalkeepers will also play a big part, but we are going for a narrow away win.

under fire No manager fit to manage any Premier League side
••
uK With only ten games played in the Premier League this season, already three managers have been sacked, while several others teeter on the brink, including rather surprisingly, Antonio Conte, although Chelsea do have previous form in sacking the manager who the previous season won the title, something that Leicester emulated last season, only to sack the replacement this season. This has confirmed the majority of Premier League fans belief that no football manager in the world is capable of managing any club in England’s topflight to the standard required. The millions that England’s top 20 teams earn from TV deals means they are all potential worldbeaters only let down by the men in the dugouts who are repeatedly proving unfit to lead them. Football writer Tom Logan said: “Year in, year out, we’re seeing the same thing.
Above: Former Leicester manager Craig ‘Two Balls’ Shakespeare, who replaced title winning manager Claudio Ranieri, who was also replaced at Chelsea after finsihing as runners up in the Premier League, by Jose Mourinho, who was also replaced by Antonio Conte after winning the Premier League, with Conte winning the league last season and looking set to be replaced before season end...

Despite all the investment every team bar one is falling short, and it’s the managers to blame. “Just look at the so-called elite. Klopp? Should be managing a Krautrock band. Mourinho? A specialist in the nil-nil away draw. Pochettino? Guardiola? Their win-loss ratios aren’t much better than men in flat caps in the 1950s. “Across Europe it’s no better. Zidane? A gormless monkhead. Ancelotti? Open a pizzeria, already. There’s not a manager on the planet up to the job. “We need to plough government funding into artificial intelligence. Quantum managers capable of trillions of tactical calculations in a nanosecond. It’s what Stoke and West Brom deserve.”
