fifth annual hua hin ‘world cup’ next weekend

•The• 5th annual 7 a side Hua Hin World Cup is taking place at True Arena in Hua Hin on the 9th hua hin

and 10th December 2017 from approximately 9am to 2pm on both days. The teams taking part are England, Sweden, France, Spain, Thailand, Finland, Denmark, Scotland and Mexico. The draw for the tournament is taking place tonight (Friday 1st December) at 8pm at the ACE Bar and Bistro on Soi Kanjanomai, with the balls being drawn by Fabian and Anthony from the two main sponsors, and all are welcome to attend. The event is a family centered tournament with fair play and respect at the heart of everything. There is still time left for anyone wanting to play - the squads are almost full but the organisers could do with a few extra players to make up the numbers in case of last minute dropouts or injuries. The main sponsors this year include Ace Bar and Bistro Hua Hin (formerly Red Piano), Red Mountain Hua Hin, Smart Digital Thailand, Surf FM 102 (Hua Hin) and Hua Hin City FC and Panama Bar. Additional sponsors are Prime Steak House, Kat-Tech, and JW Property. The tournament is a non profit, charity centered event and the organisers hope that the Hua Hin community will make the most of it by attending - entry for spectators is free, and refreshments will be available throughout the tournament. Jungle Aid will be providing medical support during the tournament and are also the nominated charity benefiting from the proceeds. An after tournament party is being held at ACE on Sunday 10th December, which is a private party for teams, sponsors and organisers until 9pm, but is then open to everybody after that to rub shoulders with the winners and stars of the tournament, and to congratulate everybody involved - we hope our readers will show their support.

a grand legacy Next Wednesday, December 5th, is Fathers’ Day in Thailand, as well as Constitution Day. Most significantly it marks the birthday of his late Majesty King Bhumibol, a very modern and progressive monarch who reigned during a period of great change in the country. This week and next we take a look at just a few of the many changes brought about by King Bhumibol himself, and his special relationship with Hua Hin. Expats and visitors alike will know that Hua Hin boasts a Royal summer palace, Klai Kangwol, meaning ‘Far From Worries.’ Klai Kangwol was built for King Bhumibols’ uncle King Prajadhipok. Completed in 1929 it provided a Royal retreat easily accessible by the new rail link from Bangkok, with of course a handy little golf course. It has to be said that there is no shortage of Royal palaces in Thailand. As well as Klai Kangwol King Bhumibol used Bhubing Palace in Chiang Mai, built in 1959 Thaksin Ratchaniwet Palace in Narathiwat Province used from 1973 and Bhuban Palace in Sakon Nakhon Palace from 1974 but none of them were exclusively for leisure. They also provided administrative bases from which the King could access more remote parts of the country, and crucially his people. Early in his reign King Bhumibol had travelled extensively abroad, establishing links with other countries, and promoting Thailand around the world, but by 1967 political problems both at home and in other South East Asian countries prompted him to focus his attention where he felt he could do more. He was quoted as saying ‘If the country is faced with difficulties and people in the remote areas are suffering, we cannot simply stay put in this paradise of a capital’. (Now of course many would disagree with the idea of Bangkok as a paradise, but 50 years ago the city was crisscrossed by khlongs rather than highways, with not a high rise building in sight. Not to mention that where there are sky trains trees once grew.) True to his word the King didn’t stay put, using his palace outposts as bases from which to see for himself exactly how people in rural areas were living, driving himself around on remote tracks and no doubt causing his security staff to lose sleep. It was a time of communist insurgencies, especially in the south, but nothing deterred the King, whose aim was to enable poor people to improve their lives by introducing them to more modern ways. He had a broad approach, what we would now all ‘all inclusive’, and his Royal projects were aimed at the development of Thailand and improvement of living

standards. Among other things they included sustainable farming and cultivation methods, more reliable water supplies, broader education, and accessible health care. Until then there had been no incentive for doctors to work in rural areas - the money needed to pay for medical treatment was in Bangkok, and living conditions in the villages weren’t suited to their professional status. King Bhumibol began to redress the balance, making trips to meet villagers, taking with him medical and other supplies which, along with his wife Queen Sirikit, he personally distributed. Concerns were raised about the risk of the King being in close contact with contagious diseases during those trips. Previous monarchs would never have ventured into such unhealthy and dangerous places, let alone had close contact with the people who lived there, but the King was unfazed. He was now spending more than eight months every year away from Bangkok, and much of that time was at the Hua Hin palace. Improving opportunities for education was close to his heart. The King believed in life long access to learning, the use of modern teaching methods, and in vocational education. He was very aware that many children in remote areas couldn’t access schools, and that the children of soldiers injured in the many clashes going on were even more disadvantaged. So he set up special schools for the poor and those affected by the unrest. The very first school which King Bhumibol personally contributed to was at Klai Kangwol Palace. It had been founded earlier by his brother King Ananda for children of the palace staff. Thanks to King Bhumibol it has now grown to accommodate some 2000 pupils. But it wasn’t quite all hard work in Hua HIn. A world class sailor, the King enjoyed taking part in Hua Hins’ annual Royal Regatta up until 1985 and even designed a smaller class of sailing dinghy which was better suited to the stature of Thai people. Next week - in a right royal spin on sois near Hua HIn, and broadcasts from Klai Kangwol.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is.... Not a dicky-bird Not a sound; not an utterance. A ‘dicky-bird’ might be of uncertain spelling - it is variously spelled ‘dicky-bird’, ‘dickey-bird’, ‘dickybird’, ‘dickeybird’ and, when referring to the retired English cricket umpire, ‘Dickie Bird’. The country of origin isn’t at all uncertain; ‘dicky-birds’ are unequivocally English. The term dates from at least the 18th century, when it appeared in the London Evening News, May 1766 as the title of a story they intended shortly to publish:

There were two blackbirds Sat upon a hill, The one was nam’d Jack, The other nam’d Gill. The ‘not a dicky-bird’ phrase indirectly derives from the tweeting sounds made by the birds. ‘Dicky-birds’ became established as a Cockney Rhyming Slang term for ‘words’, in the mid 20th century. The first record of it in print is in the 1932 ‘P. P.’ Rhyming Slang:

“ Word... Dicky bird.” “The Swan and the Dickey-bird: A fable - shall be inserted in our next” So, ‘not a dicky-bird’ means ‘not a word’, that is, silence, especially in the context where a spoken or written word might At that time ‘dickey-bird’ was a generic nursery term for the have been expected - for example, ‘Jack said he would write, but small, chirruping birds often found in the English countryside I haven’t heard a dicky-bird from him for weeks’. and features in the well-known nursery rhyme Two Little Dicky Birds. The rhyme is usually accompanied by wiggling Is there an English phrase or saying that index-finger gestures, to represent the birds:

Conditions: The positions are full time jobs and the successful candidates will be expected to work 40 hours a week; however these hours will need to be spread flexibly, as this is not a normal 9 to 5 Monday to Friday office job as many existing and potential customers are only available to discuss their requirements or settle invoices in the evenings or at weekends. The initial salary offered to the successful candidates will vary depending on previous experience and abilities, but will be in the range of 10000 to 15000 baht a month, plus any extra commission earned through performance. There will be sales targets which if achieved will generate this extra income. We anticipate this could result in an income averaging at least 20000 baht a month, with exceptional candidates capable of earning much more. There will be a probation period of 115 days for anyone hired, with an assessment of performance at the end of it. Application: Please send an email to info@awolonline.net with the subject line “Employment Application” and include your reasons for wanting to work for AWOL, your previous work history, your personal details including phone number and address, and any other information you believe is relevant to your application.

india Stunned surgeons find 263 coins in man’s stomach A man who gorged himself on coins and metal objects was rumbled when surgeons checked his stomach and found 7kg of metal. The 35-year-old had kept his bizarre eating habits to himself but surgeons found 263 coins, 100 nails and dozens of razor blades. Maksud Khan was rushed into surgery at Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in Satna, Madhya Pradesh, with severe abdominal pains. Dr Priyank Sharma, who led the surgical team, said: ‘The patient was complaining of stomach pain, so we thought of getting an endoscopy done. ‘We were shocked to discover coins, nails and nut-bolts in his stomach.’ He said it was the first time he had seen anything like it in his career. Mr Khan’s family think he began to eat metal objects after developing depression but said he did not inform anyone of his bizarre eating habits. Doctors said Mr Khan worked as a driver and would often swallow coins given to him by customers. He had been complaining of stomach pains for three months. Fortunately doctors believe there will be no lasting damage to his internal organs. One of the doctors said: ‘The operation was done in the nick of the time as some of the nails lodged had pierced his stomach, caused bleeding and resulting in loss of haemoglobin.’ Khan has told the doctors that he will never ingest metal again.

after they pulled him over in Derry city centre. The 18-yearold from Gortnaskea in Burnfoot, County Donegal, admitted to having no L plates on the vehicle on August 16 District Judge Barney McElholm said: ‘This is Don Juan – I was going to say Derry Juan but that would not be correct.’ Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said: ‘We all know tractors are all about pulling power but this taking it to extremes.’ Mr Quiqley said Breslin had been sent by his father to look for some cattle, the Belfast Telegraph reported. But after that he had ‘taken the head staggers’ – a Northern Irish expression meaning to be stupid – and that he had gone to Derry to look for women. Breslin was fined £50

sunday 3rd december 2017 PREMIER LEAGUE Arsenal v Manchester United 0:30 Two in form teams who will both be desperate to get three points to maintain both their chances of a title challenge and the pressure on runaway leaders Manchester City. Both only achieved narrow victories last weekend against unfancied opposition, but this only emphasised how important wins are in their chase of City. Defensively United are far superior to their hosts having only conceded six as opposed to the Gunners’ sixteen, and they have also scored five more goals, so the stats favour them, but in recent games Arsenal have shown more grit, so this is a very hard game to call. With two exceptional goalkeepers on show, we can’t see many goals, but we think the away side might just sneak it late on.

In this way, the possibility of Everton having won, or at least not embarrassed themselves, continues to exist.” It’s thought that many Everton fans have already adopted this strategy. However, some sceptics insist that Everton will still have lost, whether individual fans check the result or not,

Above: New Everton manager, Erwin Schrödinger, who may or may not simultaneously exist as Sam Allardyce and that in any case the unbearable smugness of Liverpool fans in particular will be impossible to avoid. Schrödinger then tried another tack, saying that every possible result exists simultaneously somewhere in the
