ridiculous
british media makes a mountain out of a molehill
•The• British tabloids have once again picked on Hua Hin in printing quite possibly the most ridiculous hua hin
‘news’ story that AWOL has had the displeasure of having to read. The Daily Mirror, the Daily Mail and the Daily Star must have been really struggling for news, but all three printed dramatic headlines about an incident that wouldn’t even have been covered by this local newspaper had it not been for the furore that has been created by their coverage. Some shaky phone video footage taken apparently shortly after midnight on New Year’s Eve/Day revealed what could at the very worst be described as a minor altercation between two or possibly three intoxicated men, and lasted at most about two minutes, is the basis for sensational descriptions such as ‘mass brawl’ and fingers being pointed at Brits abroad. This type of reporting is reminiscent of the incident at Songkran 2016, where the same papers didn’t allow the facts to get in the way of a good story, although in that case the Thais were on the receiving end and were unfairly represented in what was an admittedly much nastier situation that deserved being reported accurately. We have reported on Hua Hin events since October 2008, and we have seen far worse drunken fights that we never deemed worthy of reporting on, so for national UK newspapers to report this one is a sad state of affairs indeed, and has already appeared to have consequences, with early closing being imposed randomly in the centre of town, and the likely longer term impact on people wishing to come to Hua Hin. For anyone who loves Hua Hin, we should make sure that this nonsense is both exposed for what it is, and corrected wherever we find it, and aptly described as Fake News - Hua Hin is a safe and great place to come and we should shout it loud and proud!
