OUR STUDENTS

OUR SCHOOL With over 1,700 students representing over 50 nationalities, Awty is Houston’s premier international school and the only school in Houston fully accredited by the French Ministry of Education. Awty offers students ages three to 18 a rigorous path to graduating with one of two world-class diplomas, either the International Baccalaureate (IB), or the French Baccalauréat. The well-rounded curriculum emphasizes second language acquisition at all grade levels and combines high academic standards with a kind and friendly atmosphere. At Awty, we celebrate cultural, national, and linguistic diversity and prepare students to live, work, and lead anywhere in the world.

OUR HISTORY Founded in 1956 by Mrs. Kathleen Awty as a coed preschool, the school grew steadily in size and enrollment, adding an upper school in 1975. The French School of Houston joined with The Awty School in 1978 and together, with support from the Mission Laïque Française, they moved to the school’s current location. The school was renamed The Awty International School in 1984.

OUR PROGRAMS TWO DIPLOMAS Awty offers two academic programs of study: the French Accredited Program, which culminates in the French Baccalauréat diploma and is accredited by the French Ministry of Education; and, the International Program, which culminates in the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma. Awty graduates also obtain a Texas state high school diploma. Both programs offer a well-rounded, college preparatory curriculum within a culturally immersive environment enriching the depth and scope of learning. Below are highlights of our curricular and extra-curricular offerings.

LANGUAGES

S.T.E.A.M.

Preparing students for the global lives they are sure to lead, all students are immersed in the study of a second language. The form of immersion varies:

S.T.E.A.M. incorporates elements of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics in a cross-disciplinary approach. S.T.E.A.M. is less about what is being learned than about the actual process involved. The goal of Awty’s S.T.E.A.M. program is to offer students trans-disciplinary opportunities to think and learn outside the box in order to develop 21st century skills including creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication.

PK3/PS – K/GS: Immersion in English/French, or English/Spanish. 1st/CP – 5th/CM2: Immersion with core subjects taught in the primary language – English, French, or Spanish – and specials such as art, gym, and library taught in the second language, as well as the daily hour-long second language class. 6th/6ème – 12th/Tle: Daily intensive second language class, and extensive third language options; languages in addition to English, French and Spanish often include Arabic, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, and Russian. On any given year, Awty typically offers ten different language options.

EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION The goal of experiential education at Awty is for our students to discover and connect to the world in a meaningful way expanding the boundaries of traditional education and allowing for independent thinking and growth. In the primary grades, these experiences take place through both on-site and off-site field trips locally, nationally, and globally. At the secondary level, each grade participates in a specifically designed activity during Awty Connects Week. Highlights have historically included the 7th grade/5ème Washington, D.C. trip, the 8th grade/4ème Big Bend trip, 9th grade/3ème internships, and 10th grade/2nde and 11th grade/1ère service learning and cultural trips in Houston, and countries across the globe ranging from Belize to Tanzania and from France to Peru.

FINE ARTS

COLLEGE

Students at Awty have the opportunity to participate in the visual and performing arts through elective classes, as well as co- and extracurricular activities. Involvement in the arts allows students to express their creativity, build confidence, and improve overall academic performance. Classes are offered in choir, dance, digital studio, drama, photography, speech and debate, and studio art. There are also numerous performing groups in instrumental and vocal music, dance, and theater.

ATHLETICS We believe the pursuit of competitive excellence and success is an integral part of a complete educational experience. Through athletic competition, students develop leadership, selfconfidence, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Our student-athletes are coached to work hard toward collective goals, to strengthen their individual skills, and to persevere when confronted by challenges. Awty offers Middle and Upper School teams in Baseball, Softball, Basketball, Cross Country, Field Hockey, Golf, Lacrosse, Soccer, Swimming, Tennis, Track & Field, and Volleyball. Awty is proud to be a part of the Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC) and the Houston Junior Preparatory Conference (HJPC).

CLUBS Awty students are passionate about a broad range of topics reflected in over 50 clubs and organizations at the Upper School level, and about 15 for Middle School. These studentinitiated, faculty-sponsored clubs meet before or after school and in some cases during the hour-long lunch period. Some examples include Aerospace, Chicago Model United Nations, Environmental, Magic the Gathering, Medical, Origami, The Power of Music, and Robotics.

TRADITIONS At Awty, we take pride in celebrating the diverse cultures that compose our community through annual events such as Chinese New Year, Fiesta de Mayo, Francophonie, and Go Texan Day. The hallmark event is our annual International Festival, which showcases 40 countries over a two-day period and is Houston’s longest running international festival.
