Highlights
Axis undertook an air source heat pump (ASHP) installation under a renewables contract for social housing residents in Braintree, Essex.
The properties owned and managed by our client Eastlight Community Homes, consists of 3 family homes and 1 bungalow for an elderly resident.
The original ASHP was outdated and lacked system controls, limiting the ability to operate reliably within optimal temperature ranges and the units were very noisy.
Axis conducted property surveys to evaluate heat loss, radiator adequacy, and pipework needs, producing reports with performance projects based on Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) data to create a custom design. This included enhanced heating zones, expanded pipework and larger radiators.
Axis’ Mechanical & Electrical (M&E) team stripped out the old units, constructed a new base for the ASHP, upgraded internal pipework and connected electrical works.
Vaillant aroTHERM, uniSTOR heat pump unvented cylinder, buffer unit and sensoCOMFORT (user controls, remote control, temperature sensor and thermostats) were installed.

We also installed Grundfos pumps and Honeywell valves to ensure long-term reliability.
The new ASHP system, with a high Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOP) at a 45°C flow temperature, offers efficient heating and hot water with real-time control adjustments. This reduces energy usage, cutting heating costs by an estimated 1,400 kwh annually.

Our team kept in regular contact with our residents before and during works, we also had a supervisor on-site to communicate and answer any questions raised.
It was all good, professional and friendly we were always pre warned about work since the install. It’s been very warm here, best we have had in the 11 years we’ve been here.
Client Relationship
Under the 2-year renewables contract with an indicative value of £500,000 per annum, we will be decommissioning existing oil, gas and electric systems and installing new Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) systems. Since September 2023, we have completed a total of 6,114 services.
