Innovating for a smarter, safer world By Atul Rajput, Regional Director, Northern Europe, Axis Communications Atul Rajput: www.linkedin.com/in/atulrajput Welcome to the ninth edition of Axis’ Northern Europe partner magazine, #AxisInnovates. Through a combination of smart innovation and human imagination, Axis have been pioneering intelligent network technology for over 20 years, during which time Axis have delivered many ground-breaking products and industry firsts. The source of inspiration for this sustained period of creativity and innovation can be traced back to 1995, when Axis co-founders Mikael and Martin articulated their goal of enabling more and more hardware to be connected simply and economically to IP networks. Re-imagining what you can do with technology is the “Why” behind what Axis do. At the time, we coined the term “ThinServer Technology” to refer to this new breed of embedded intelligent network devices. Today we know it more commonly as the Internet of Things (IoT). It carries special significance for me, as when I joined Axis over 20 years ago, I was pursuing a different career path until stumbling across the ThinServer technology white paper on our web site that attracted me to work at Axis. Reflecting on those 20 years, I am proud to say that blend of entrepreneurial spirit and values based culture has remained intact and has been the driving force behind our industry leadership in network video. It also serves as the catalyst for a new wave of innovation in intelligent network devices as we embrace technology markets beyond network video, with Axis already making great strides in IP Audio, Door Entry and Access control. This blend of entrepreneurial spirit and core values is encapsulated in the Axis vision of “Innovating for a Smarter, Safer World”. At Axis, we believe that just as our innovative solutions should contribute to a smarter and safer world, so should our business practices. Axis passionately believe in being transparent in our approach, which is why we have consistently published a sustainability report since 2010, which is

an integral part of our long-term strategy. With a specific focus on business conduct, social and environmental responsibility, we seek to minimize impacts, create a healthy working environment, eradicate corruption and ensure respect for human rights. Mega trends such as urbanization, climate change and rapid demographic and social shifts are increasingly making people judge companies based on how they live up to their own values and whether they can demonstrate a positive societal impact. This view is supported by the results of the Edelman Trust Barometer, an annual trust and credibility survey, which reveals that due to a polarisation of trust in the world today, society is increasingly demanding companies have a purpose beyond just profit – one that centres on the ideal of improving people’s lives. For me personally, an application that really captures the essence of the Axis vision of Innovating for a Smarter, Safer World is a customer installation at the Olomouc University Hospital in the Czech Republic. Some moments are precious in life, none more so than when you experience the sheer unadulterated joy of your children being born. Responding to the heart-breaking scenario of a newborn being admitted to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), the hospital deployed Axis cameras in incubators for observation of premature and ill newborn babies and represents a heart-warming use of Axis IP cameras to strengthen the bond between a new-born and anxious parents. Medical research has shown that forming emotional bonds are crucial for the successful development and recovery of a child. The dual purpose application of secure live streaming in the cloud to monitor your baby remotely for doting parents and close family, coupled with the ability for mothers still at hospital but unable to visit the intensive care unit (ICU), to monitor your child’s development from a tablet, is immeasurable in value.

In addition the cameras are used for medical analysis and for improving care. The inspiration for the application actually arose from a random viewing of a television show by the chief physician at the newborn department of Olomouc University hospital. Axis were able to propose a viable solution despite the technical obstacles faced, having developed the miniature and discreet AXIS P1214 HDTV camera, which challenged the conventional form factor we associated with surveillance cameras. The agony of not being able to watch and hold your newborn baby is heart wrenching and having faced this situation with our first child, I know how much it would have meant to have had this video interaction during those precious first few days, especially for my wife as she was unable to be mobile and visit ICU. If in some small way applications like these can offset some of the pain you experience, in feeling you have been deprived of enjoying one of the most magical moments that life can bring, it represents a shining example of how technology can positively impact people’s lives. As my kids grow up and inevitably ask me one day what I do for work, I will be able to say with some conviction that I work for a company who contribute to a smarter, safer world.

Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in store for the physical security industry? By Johan Paulsson, CTO at Axis Communications

It is said the only constant in life is change. In that respect, 2017 was another critical year for the physical security industry that demonstrated continued progression of IP camera and audio technology. Not only are many firms utilising IP technology to ensure the safety and security of their staff and premises, but they are also now able to operate more intelligently. This year, there is no doubt this evolution is continuing. The pace of technological innovation is such that even the most fantastic of imagined futures could become reality in the near future. We have put together the top 10 technology trends that we believe will have a major impact on the physical security industry going forward.

2. Cloud-to-cloud

Despite the move towards edge computing, the cloud will continue to play a role in IT infrastructures. As an increasing number of companies offer cloud-based services, the cloud eco system is increasingly becoming the preferred point of integration, rather than the traditional on-premise system. One benefit of integration between clouds is a significant potential reduction of inhouse IT services required, creating great cost benefits.

1. At the edge technology

Cloud computing and the Internet of Things (IoT) have been growing trends in recent years, delivering undeniable benefits to businesses and consumers. This has come with its own implications, namely an increased amount of data being transferred from connected devices to the data center for processing and storage, with increased bandwidth required. Edge computing alleviates this issue by performing data processing at the edge of the network, closer to the source of the data. Doing so reduces the bandwidth needed between sensors, devices and the data center.

We have reached a stage where the benefits of deep learning architectures and machine learning can start to be realised. The explosion of data is helping businesses become increasingly intelligent. As applications develop, there are significant opportunities for predictive analytics which could facilitate incident prevention: from terrorist incidents to slip and fall accidents; from traffic issues to shoplifting; and even the tragedy of rail suicides.

Deep learning will help deliver highly personalised services. For example, in a retail store a customerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s face could be recognised upon entry, with product offers pushed to their mobile device based on previous purchases or even their browsing history. That said, this example immediately highlights privacy concerns around how personal data is being used by organisations. Legislation is being created to address these concerns. In the European Union, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will unify the protection of data for individuals within the EU, wherever that data is held or used.

Once again, cybersecurity must appear on the list of trends for the next 12 months. The constant enhancement of cybersecurity will be a never-ending task, because wellresourced cybercriminals will never stop looking to exploit vulnerabilities in new technology. As the number of connected devices grows, so too do the potential flaws that, if left unaddressed, could provide the opportunity for networks to be breached. It is therefore essential companies work with vendors, suppliers and installers that they know are taking cybersecurity seriously.

For many, blockchain and Bitcoin have become synonymous. In reality there are many differences, and while Bitcoin uses blockchain as its foundation, the potential for blockchain to verify almost anything that has a value is almost limitless. 2018 will start to see blockchain used to verify video content from multiple sources – such as public mobile phones and law enforcement body-worn cameras – for use within forensic investigations.

Until recently, most of the data available to surveillance operators was video footage, which only delivers a two-dimensional perspective. With the use of new, nonvisual sensors such as radar technology, this view will become multi-dimensional, providing a richness of data that will enable a more accurate assessment of situations. This could dramatically reduce the number of false alarms caused by moving shadows or light beams, small animals, raindrops or insects.

6. Platforms to realise the full benefits of IoT

The IoT has reached a point where it is crucial to use scalable architecture to successfully collect and analyse data, and manage the network of connected devices. Such an IoT platform allows equipment from different node vendors to coexist and easily exchange information to form smart systems using existing network infrastructure. There are numerous companies, both well-established providers of technology and new market entrants, enabling platforms to support IoT devices, and next year will see further maturation.

As the world’s population is increasingly housed in cities – 25% more people will live in a city in 2050 than they currently do today – the use of sensors to help create more liveable, sustainable and safe environments will only increase. However, a true smart city is a vision for urban development that integrates information, data, communications and IoT technology in a secure fashion to manage a city’s assets. This includes government departments, schools, transportation systems, hospitals, power plants and more. Traditionally, most of these services have operated in silos. Going forward, a city can only truly be ‘smart’ when all its data is open and usable across every service.

The last year has seen significant consumer adoption of virtual assistants. Amazon Alexa and Google Home have both gained momentum as technology to help people manage their daily lives, and forthcoming technologies such as Facebook M will only build on this. It is inevitable that these same technologies will start to find their way into the business environment, as consumers expect the same levels of technological help at work as they now get at home.

Short term thinking equals long term loss. That’s the lesson our Western business culture must understand to effectively operate in our modern world. It is still the view of many, especially within mid-sized and large enterprise, that values come second to pragmatism. High-minded goals regarding sustainability shouldn’t interfere with profit-making activities. However, in a rapidly changing market driven by innovative technologies that are disrupting every industry, there are only two truly long-term markers of competitive advantage: competence and values. Competence, of course, ensures that products stay relevant and are trusted by customers; a commitment to excellence in a market that rapidly matures and becomes commoditised will always be a key differentiator for Axis. This is only possible, however, with a commitment to values. Developing a cohesive company culture that always looks to long-term sustainability over short-term gain is what underpins the decision-making process, which is important in a market that is constantly providing us with new challenges. That is why, underpinning Axis’ sustainability strategy, is a commitment to the UN Global Compact and its 10 principles on human rights, anticorruption, the environment and labour. Developing technology with integrity Sustainability is about more than just environmental concerns and today, as awareness grows of poorly implemented cybersecurity practices in light of GDPR, the IoT world in which we operate is at risk of being caught up in a public backlash.

Operating with integrity, of which sustainability is a crucial part, is the key to retaining a customer’s trust. Regarding security, we work closely with our partners to help them understand the nuances of – for example – video surveillance technology and how it is utilised. This includes maintaining regular dialogue around the correct use of cameras and recording equipment, and the storage of data generated. To that end, there has only been one vulnerability that could affect privacy detected in Axis products last year, which was switfly remedied, according to the vulnerability management processes that Axis has implemented as part of its cybersecurity focus. In both 2015 and 2016 there were none. In terms of the environment, we work hard to reduce the impact of our operations, both those generated as a direct result of our business and the indirect impact related to manufacturing and energy use. We aim to reduce CO2 per unit sold by 20% between 2016 and 2021. Progress towards this goal is being achieved through initiatives such as moving manufacturing closer to our largest market, and a reduction in the amount of materials used in packaging. In our manufacturing process, we aim to reduce the use of virgin and toxic materials. New product designs are scored using a Green Design Evaluations Form, which makes clear and encourages progress towards our overall goals. The result is that 95% of materials used in Axis products can be recycled or combusted at their end of life. 93% of Axis network cameras that were sold during 2017, was PVC-free.

Our schools are built to nurture the next generation, to bestow upon them a passion for learning. They’re also considered safe havens for our children, places where we can leave them secure in the knowledge that they’re protected. However, we live in an increasingly unpredictable world; the UK’s terrorism threat level currently stands at ‘Severe’1 and last year the National Counter Terrorism Security Office (NaCTSO), with support from the PSHE Association, updated their advice for schools regarding emergency planning and protective security advice2. In response to this, a growing number of schools across the UK have developed or updated lockdown procedures and began running lockdown drills. In reality, the likelihood that they’ll face a true threat is low, but as we saw with the recent Minecraft-related bomb threat hoax that affected 100 UK schools3, you never know where a threat may come from. Preparing for all eventualities is the only way to truly safeguard all students and staff. The key principles of an effective lockdown In order to establish an effective lockdown procedure there are several different areas to consider, from understanding the environment you’re looking to secure through to developing and communicating your security strategies. At Axis, we recommend: > Identifying boundaries and safe zones Educational institutions must set out and secure a boundary. This should consist of boundary monitoring via surveillance cameras and cross-line detection. Schools must also decide where to locate fall back/shelter zones.

> Understanding your environment and how best to respond This should include determining how the site can be split into zones to allow specific areas to be locked down; identifying how to achieve effective full or partial lockdown of the environment; and establishing how to quickly secure all access points. > Developing security strategies and protocols Facilities must develop management procedures for anyone entering or leaving the site; establish incident procedures, including ways of managing both planned response and fast-changing situations; and ensure clear roles and responsibilities for all staff who are a part of response procedures. > Increasing communication and training A robust plan regarding how the lockdown and post-lockdown process works must be communicated to students and staff. Staff must also be trained on the procedures and students educated via drills and RUN HIDE TELL training.4 The importance of physical security technology The need for an effective, efficient and dynamic security solution is paramount in schools and technology plays a crucial role in this. Key to achieving a secure and safe environment is the use of physical security technology. The latest systems, which take advantage of Internet of Things (IoT) technology, allow users to react to events in real-time.

Many of the traditional proprietary camera, access control and audio systems currently in place are linked to some degree, but these respond poorly to dynamic, changing threat levels when compared to an IoT approach. The latest IP-based security devices offer more flexibility, allowing users to react to an event as it happens. With increasing fears that the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia is at risk of a terror attack, the physical security of sporting stadiums and concert venues has never been under as much scrutiny as it is today. While it is, of course, necessary to always ensure the security of locations where large crowds gather over short periods of time, recent high-profile events within Europe and across the world have resulted in increased attention on the requirement for all facilities to ensure the continued safety of their visitors. And to some extent, it is clear that the message is getting through. In the US, amid fears of a terror attack during its largest annual sporting event the Super Bowl, authorities deployed the biggest ever security operation in the game’s history to ensure the showdown between the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots went off without a hitch. Within Europe, specifically the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, Twickenham Stadium and the SSE Arena, Belfast have both significantly enhanced their security provisions by shifting from analogue to IP camera technology, as well as increasing the number of cameras each facility utilises. This is helping ensure all sport and concert goers enjoy a positive experience in a safe environment. From safety to security – real-time insights through IP technology There are many elements to consider that will help venues worldwide implement the correct security technology. Long gone are the days when a traditional, analogue video installation was enough to prevent a breach or identify its culprit.

In today’s threat landscape, security teams must be able to identify and track potential threats before, during and after a match or event, in real-time. Modern day, IP camera technology is essential to fulfil this function, as it offers access to highdefinition live video from any authorised computer or mobile device. It is the IP element of a physical security system that is really crucial at a modern stadium or arena. The major benefit of network video over its analogue counterpart is that footage can be viewed in real-time, which is essential to allow security teams to track and halt suspicious behaviour and respond to incidents as they occur. This network connectivity also allows a physical security system to be closely integrated with other systems such as access control, smoke & fire alarms, and emergency buttons to enable quick verification and response. The simple truth is that analogue CCTV technology isn’t able to provide the security benefits required for stadiums and arenas. No threats can be deterred by physical security technology that can only provide a historical record of an incident. Furthermore, a threat cannot be detected if a security system is unable to operate in real-time. Finally, no threat can be delayed unless counter-measures can be initiated in a timely manner, something that would be impossible without real-time insights. Security beyond a match or event Every event offers a new challenge, especially one the size of a World Cup. Ensuring the safety of those attending an event is of course the top priority.

Proactive intelligence, rather than reactive surveillance, is the overwhelming benefit IP technology provides. Stadiums and venues across the world are facing huge challenges, from ensuring the safety of attendees, to proving the return on investment of an installation beyond event day. Of course, modern IP technology alone is not the answer, and cannot halt or prevent an attack without the correct security processes in place. Without it, however, the task is a significantly more difficult one.

Collaboration the key to effective cybersecurity and GDPR compliance Steven Kenny, Industry Liaison, Architecture & Engineering at Axis Communications, discusses how the GDPR could act as a catalyst to enhance cybersecurity. Steven Kenney: www.linkedin.com/in/steven-kenny-24461825/ There is no doubt that the rapid proliferation of connected technologies is leaving more businesses vulnerable to cyber-attacks. The same applies in the surveillance and physical security sector, where Axis has, of course, pioneered significant advancements in the last decade. A shift from analogue CCTV to the networked cameras in use today has not only increased the physical safety and security of different environments, but also opened backdoors into companies’ IT networks when not deployed correctly. This is a concerning situation for those not prioritising cybersecurity, especially considering the implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). GDPR and the IoT cybersecurity challenge Unfortunately, there is no such thing as unbreachable in our new internetconnected world, however, achieving GDPR compliance will put firms in a good position to ensure the protection of Personally Identifiable Information (PII). The issue is that often, not enough thought is given to the security of devices being connected to a network, with the focus on the business benefits of a technology. What has become clear after many years of consistent news headlines is that any solution not built with both a secure by design and privacy by design ethos may present opportunities for hackers. It may be a relief to many that the GDPR doesn’t state that data must be protected in such a way that a breach could never occur; rather, the key is accounting for obvious network vulnerabilities.

This could include poorly configured IP video cameras that may be at risk of hacking by criminals. Having this conversation with customers is a good starting point for channel businesses, advising them to install technologies from trusted vendors and manufacturers who take a secure by design approach to product development. An opportunity for greater collaboration To navigate the increasing threat landscape IT, physical security and technology manufacturers must work together as a cohesive unit. Where security specialists once dealt with the entire procurement and installation process, this must now become more collaborative to guarantee increased security throughout the supply chain. This collaboration really is critical as if a major breach occurs, the chain of responsibility will be carefully examined when considering the severity of the penalties to apply. The conversations we need to start having aren’t just with our customers, they are with each other. While we don’t believe the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) is going to start handing out fines to every business that does not comply with the GDPR, achieving compliance as soon as possible does give our industry an opportunity for closer collaboration, better education, better practice and, ultimately, better security for businesses. It’s not enough that we are rigorous in our approach to security, all of our partners must be too.

An innovative solution for adding audio and I/O capabilities Here at Axis we are proud of the creative environment which facilitates new features and technologies being invented to complement a strong portfolio of network products. The addition of audio and access control solutions to our camera offerings are good examples of this, as well as last year’s launch of the radar detector. Speaking to our partners and customers, we have learned that the use of audio complementing video in a surveillance system adds value and enhances the system. Audio is often requested to get video surveillance with audio recordings, enable audio analytics, audio warnings or ACAPs. I/O is requested to trigger sensors or relays (add connectivity with sensors, such as a door switch, IR detector or glass break detector) for triggering events, or add connectivity with control devices or relays to open/close doors, turn on/off lights, upon triggering.

However, having the audio built-in is not always needed. For instance, customers who want to standardize on a preferred camera might not need audio for all installations. Also, cameras with builtin audio have limited flexibility since the audio and/or I/O is installed close to the camera. Most audio and I/O modules also need an IP-address and provide two streams, one for video and one for audio. So that is why we are now introducing AXIS T61 Audio and I/O Series to enable audio and supervised I/O for Axis cameras that do not have this functionality builtin. Using our portcast technology, audio and I/O is transferred digitally over the network cable (PoE) between the camera and interface, seamlessly providing audio and I/O just as if it were integrated into the camera. As AXIS T61 units can be installed anywhere between the switch and the camera which means it enables audio to be captured closer to the point of interest offering a flexible and costeffective addition of audio and I/O.

Implementing IoT technology within a real estate platform model By guest author: Christoffer Börjesson, CDO Fastighetsägarna The rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) has propelled us into a new information age in which data is now king. Businesses are beginning to collect, store and utilise data generated from smart, network connected devices in increasingly intelligent ways, which has created new opportunities also within the real-estate industry. The most effective business model to realise the benefits of the information age is now a platform model. As well as being the most effective, a platform model is also the most logical model for a property owner. They have access to the property and infrastructure where smart technologies can make a real difference in the home and at work. Tenants are also increasingly demanding technologies that’ll make them more efficient in their daily lives. Furthermore, property owners have the funds available to implement such technologies from rent and fees. And the technology exists. Device manufacturers in every industry, from healthcare to home appliances, are now racing to create and sell the most effective connected technologies, each sparking an IoT revolution in their own sector.

Secondly, to function properly IoT devices must be connected to the internet. This allows them to communicate with other devices, as well as to consumers’ mobile devices and computers using ‘protocols’, or data exchange standards. This provides an easier way for consumers to connect the products in their lives, but these must be open systems for this to work for the tenant. A closed IoT device, for example one that only works with products made by the same manufacturer, creates a barrier for the consumer regarding what they can use and how simply it can be installed. Wasted value This lack of mass adoption has led to IoT technologies not being integrated into buildings and real-estate. But there exists an opportunity for real estate owners to both facilitate the large-scale adoption of connected devices during the initial development and building upgrade cycles; and to help consumers, with the support of an IoT platform partner, to integrate their connected devices across different protocols.

However IoT devices are not commonly utilised in the current real estate model, despite the increasing hype around the efficiency benefits. It is clear then that IoT suppliers require more active support in this field to achieve mass adoption.

This would result in a more seamless experience when utilising connected devices, whether as part of working or living in modern buildings. It is clear that, from the real estate owners’ perspective, the IoT represents not just a natural development of a building’s value, but also a special partnership opportunity to improve the quality and performance value of a building.

There are two reasons for this. Firstly, the majority of home IoT appliances, from washing machines and fridges, to smoke alarms and physical security, are installed by the property developer or owner before a tenant moves in to a property. This means that selling these devices to consumers is less effective than selling them in bulk to real-estate developers, which is a more complicated task.

That said, it is worth noting that this opportunity is not the same as real estate owners simply adopting IoT implementation and integration. It is instead another platform opportunity: where real estate can exploit its governance of its own asset, and access to tenants, to facilitate a large-scale implementation across the range of IoT devices by service suppliers.

Platform solution The missing piece when thinking about implementing a real estate platform model is having an IoT service integrator who takes the responsibility of both sourcing and qualifying IoT suppliers, as well as helping tenants integrate different IoT products into both their home and working environments. That is why we have proposed the following important operational questions relevant to IoT platformisation: 1. Asset management - how should IoT devices be integrated into a physical asset, whether at the building, apartment, or office level?

3. Tenant management - how should IoT services be presented to and managed by tenants, and with what support from third-party partners, if any?

2. Services management - treating IoT provisions as a ‘service layer’ of the property, which IoT ‘service’ categories are most valuable and relevant? For example, safety, health, cooking, space management, lighting, sound, energy? How should IoT-based services be managed and integrated and by who?

4. Data management - what are the key information flows associated with IoT use, how can these be managed and leveraged correctly, and otherwise integrated with a secure data development model?

In answering these questions, it will be possible for real estate owners and IoT service integrators to realise the benefits of intelligent, connected technologies in the real estate industry. The IoT works at the level of the individual, generating new and large information flows which involve significant amounts of private data. This means that IoT platform development should be evolved alongside data management capacity.

With smart zoning, staff can speak to individuals in certain hallways or areas, telling them to hurry along to class if they’re running late, for example. When combined with IP cameras and access control systems, IP audio allows you to gain even more from a system. Intelligent solutions can be set up to do many various tasks, for instance, sending an audio message out to staff when an IP camera recognises that a queue has become too long, or triggering an audio message if an intruder steps into a set perimeter. 4. Improved security - IP audio can add another layer to a connected security network. For example, if someone is caught acting suspiciously, the operator can use the audio system to inform them they are being filmed and police are on the way. Many IP audio systems include built-in microphones, and gathering audio in real-time can help schools and retailers respond to incidents as they occur. Furthermore, in an emergency situation the network can mute any other audio currently being played to ensure there’s no risk that emergency announcements will be missed. IP audio can also be used as an active security sensor, with audio analytics that detects screams, glass breaking or gunshots, for example, adding a new dimension to a physical security system.

The Finnish optical chain Keops sells designer eyewear and has shops in Helsinki, Tampere and Oulu. The customer experience in its shops should reflect the company’s high-class brand and image. Keops was looking for an audio and music solution that would enhance the overall experience for customers in the shop while also helping to build the optical chain’s brand. Keops wanted a package solution for background sound and shop messages, with a musical experience that upheld the same high standard as the glasses sold in the shops. Good sound quality Keops’ shops wanted a high-quality audio solution with calm, preferably instrumental, background music. Keops ordered the installation of the Mediacone Music Solution network audio system from Pinesker with a network-connected speaker from Axis. The Mediacone Music Solution enables tailored music, announcements, information and advertisements, with dynamic playlists that are automatically updated and have full flexibility for scheduled announcements. Early fire detection in critical environments

Video smoke detection offers new possibilities for integrators and end customers. But with the advent of Video Smoke Detection (VSD), both communities seem to have found each other. VSD allows surveillance and fire safety operators to make better decisions based on the video footage they get presented through dedicated cameras. For integrators, there is finally a way to maximize the use of the security camera network and to detect fires much earlier than any other conventional smoke detector. Video analytics has been around for many years for perimeter intrusion monitoring and the detection of people. In traffic applications, it is a proven way to detect people and vehicles. But it was not until recently that video analytics for the detection of smoke and fire has come into the spotlight. Combining years of expertise in the world of traffic and security monitoring the Belgium-based company Araani developed specific algorithms for the detection of smoke in critical environments, such as waste plants, chemical environments or tall spaces. This crystallized in Araani’s flagship product SmokeCatcher. Fire safety in critical environments Video analytics might not be new in itself, but the application of the technology in these critical environments is. When it comes to fire safety, traditional smoke detection technologies fall short for two reasons: they detect smoke much too late or they generate too many unwanted alarms. The first situation happens in tall buildings, where smoke cannot reach ceiling-mounted detectors in time in order to set off an alarm. The second problem occurs in harsh environments where dust, chemicals or other contaminants set off false alarms.

This might not seem such a big problem at first, but stopping a production line or a critical process for an unwanted alarm or perfectly containable incident can actually amount to huge costs for companies. Video smoke detection benefits VSD cameras can see smoke in the video image, appearing right at the source. First of all, this is a very fast way of detecting smoke, because there is no need to wait until the smoke has traveled way up to a point, beam or aspiration detector. This is time gained for anyone who needs to make crucial decisions about fire extinguishment, possible evacuation or halting production. Secondly, VSD cameras are very reliable and generate fewer unwanted alarms in comparison to conventional detectors. This is because video analytics have become better and better in recognizing actual smoke versus other phenomena, such as dust or chemicals. False alarm or not, probably the biggest advantage of VSD technology is that it gives the operator room for interpretation. Since it allows for visual verification, VSD provides the operator with valuable time to make a well-founded decision. That decision could be calling the emergency services and avoid further damage or human suffering. The most requested course topic or training by far was on cybersecurity.

This is where I am genuinely happy and proud of the recent months progress and interaction with our partners and customers. Based on your top request we designed and launched a cybersecurity course in Northern Europe. You had asked for it, so we wanted to keep our promise to offer something new based on your feedback. The response was more than I had hoped for. A majority of the classes were over booked, some were filled to the point of waiting lists being implemented hours after the date and time was released. We kept our promise and listened to your feedback but you did even better and kept your promise to attend and take part. Our technical trainers Sonny, Frida and Mike all found the new training to be challenging because of the type of questions the topic brought up. So far, your feedback has been great but we are, of course, still learning and adapting. We continuously add new content and topics to our course portfolio and it always makes me proud when they are successful and well received.
