EDITORIAL

A smarter, safer solution to protect small businesses By Atul Rajput, Regional Director, Northern Europe, Axis Communications Welcome to the fourth edition of Axis’ Northern Europe partner magazine, #AxisInnovates. Small businesses are hugely important to Europe’s economy, with 500,000 new businesses formed each year in Britain alone. Crime affects businesses of all sizes, but smaller firms are often impacted the hardest as they struggle to absorb the unexpected costs associated with incidents of crime against their business. Taking the UK as an example, research from the Federation of Small Business (FSB) found that a third of firms believe business crime is on the rise. Furthermore, tackling this issue is becoming increasingly complex, with 53% of small businesses suffering from both property theft and cybercrime. With the average cost of crime to a business now at £5,898, and given the limited resources at the disposal of small businesses, proprietors are crying out for a video surveillance solution that is simple, reliable, and affordable. It is a problem that has not gone unnoticed by the UK government, which has even launched a guide for small businesses looking to install CCTV systems. The aforementioned FSB survey found almost a quarter of small business owners do not report crimes committed against their business. The primary reasons cited included that nothing positive would come of it; that the police wouldn’t be able to locate the criminals responsible; or wouldn’t achieve a successful prosecution even if they did. These concerns have served as an inspiration for the launch of our AXIS Companion range, targeted at the small business segment, which also represents our company vision of innovating for a smarter, safer world. Axis has dedicated the last 20 years to developing innovative surveillance products in the enterprise market and Axis has utilised those years of experience,

know-how and reputation for quality to launch our brand new Companion line. The solution has been designed to meet the total requirements of businesses such as small shops, restaurants and offices that have a basic video surveillance need to secure employees, customers, premises and assets. With HDTV video quality day and night, a small business owner will have more reason to be confident in flagging incidents to the authorities with high quality images that can be shared with law enforcement to help identify criminals. At the core of the new line is the AXIS Companion Recorder, an 8-channel network video recorder with a built-in PoE switch for cost savings and ease of installation. As mobile technology has also transformed the way small businesses work, the Companion range offers direct access to monitoring streams via a mobile device, meaning small business owners can access live footage of their business anywhere and anytime. This is achieved through an app for iOS/Android devices, removing the need for a PC during setup. We recognise that the channel into small businesses is different to the enterprise market. That is why we are also investing in our partners in the field who already have expertise in supporting small business customers. Our approach is to ensure that the installer is recognised by the small business owner as their security specialist, providing expert insight and support at a local level. In order to ensure the best for small business, we’ve also launched the AXIS Companion Specialist initiative, which involves dedicated training, sales support and promotions, as well as marketing assistance for our installers and distributors. AXIS Companion Specialists will have fast and direct access to technical support through a local helpdesk, as well as a dedicated web portal arming them

with the tools and knowledge they require to become a small business specialist. At Axis, we are extremely passionate about solving customers’ specific needs relating to video surveillance. In the small business segment, owners are rightly more focussed on driving their business forward, a livelihood they are extremely passionate about. With a lot on their plate, security can often be overlooked. We want to alleviate this burden by offering a simple, easy to use solution that business owners can rely on, with the assurance that Axis and its partners are always on hand. With the launch of the AXIS Companion range we believe we have achieved this. Sleek in design, and with impressive HD quality video, the AXIS Companion range also supports our award-winning Zipstream compression technology, all accessed through our updated, slick and intuitive mobile-friendly interface for 24/7 video surveillance access. Small business owners can also rest assured they will be supported by an accredited AXIS Companion Specialist initiative; we think this is a winning combination. Visit us at IFSEC for a live demonstration; we hope you will share our passion for the new AXIS Companion range.

Aperio® brings wireless access control to the AXIS A1001 Network Door Controller AXIS A1001 Network Door Controller operates on a flexible platform, built to easily adapt as security needs at a site change. Now with seamless integration of Aperio® wireless cylinders, escutcheons, locks and server solutions, administrators can manage an entire Axis access management system from a single, easyto-use interface, controlling standard wired locks alongside Aperio® battery-powered locks from ASSA ABLOY. Once installed, an Aperio® RS-485 Hub can coordinate up to 8 Aperio® locks within a typical range of 15 to 25 meters, communicating with the admin system via a powerful AXIS A1001 IP Network Controller. One AXIS A1001 Door Controller can manage one wired door and one Aperio® hub, managing up to a total of 9 doors per hub. AES 128-bit encryption ensures communication between lock and system is secure. Online Aperio® integration gives facility managers real-time status information about their premises. Aperio® locks are wireless, so there’s no need for expensive or time-consuming cabling during installation. AXIS A1001 uses Power over Ethernet (PoE), which also eliminates the need for power cables to the controllers. If needs change at a facility— perhaps managers want to control access to more site doors—it’s quick, efficient and easy for an installer to fit Aperio® locks and integrate the doors with the AXIS Entry Manager control panel. Aperio® components are compatible with Euro, French, Finnish, Scandinavian and Swiss door profiles.

“Aperio® locks are also extremely energyefficient,” says Chris Bone, Vice President Digital Access Solutions at ASSA ABLOY EMEA. “The locks run on standard lithiumion batteries, and only ‘wake up’ when prompted by a smart card or other user credential. They are not connected to the mains, and use no power when inactive.” Aperio® locks enable facility managers to bring monitored access and detailed audit trails to more doors in a facility than would previously be affordalbe with standard wired access control. Users experience no disruption to their routines. They open both wired doors and Aperio® wireless controlled doors with the same card, using standard RFID technology. The newly integrated locks run the latest Aperio® V3 technology, ensuring remote unlocking commands pass from system to an Aperio® equipped door almost instantly. “The joint solution fills a market need for smaller installations needing wireless devices,” says Stephanie Hensler, Director Business Development at Axis Communications. “With AXIS A1001, this allows for easy installation and management of wired and wireless doors within the same solution.” With Aperio® wireless access technology, AXIS Entry Manager is a complete, scalable, fully integrated and future-proofed access control system.

“The joining of two open physical security companies in Axis and AssaAbloy offers Axis customers the chance to consider a complete Axis physical security management solution. Alongside our network cameras, Axis customers can now choose to set up Axis A1001 access control and Aperio wireless locks in a fully scalable security solution, giving them freedom to develop their system as their needs change, without limits and always with a value and cost focus.” John Allen, Business Development Manager, Access Control at Axis Communications

AXIS PARTNERS@IFSEC 2016

Cloudy is the new Sunny By Martyn Ryder, Sales Director Northern Europe at Morphean. The power of Cloud computing is now used by many individuals and businesses. We use it so much that we don’t even realise the place it now takes in our everyday life. There are now thousands of platforms that provide us access to data everyday thanks to the Cloud: iTunes, Netflix, Spotify or enterprise applications like MS Office 365, Google docs, Skype, Dropbox and Salesforce, just to name some. In the professional environment, these new ways of collaborating offered by the cloud are being adopted by most companies to enhance their overall I.T. strategy and to enable their employees to interact at new levels and improve their processes by having key data and information at hand 24/7 thanks to new business hardware such as tablets, smartphones and BYOD (Bring-your-own-device). Businesses are now looking at how their physical security applications can move to the cloud and integrators at how they can drive new business opportunities and models. Many I.T. departments want to focus on what’s core to making money and are therefore looking for new ways to collaborate with security manufacturers and integrators to quickly move forward in order to provide new and technically-advanced cloud solutions. For several years, the security industry has been very sceptical and cited security of data as a major drawback to the adoption of cloud solutions. At the same time, businesses are finding ways to work through these concerns and benefits far beyond the perceived risks. Now, with business embracing cloud technology and downsizing internal data centres in favour of cloud services and external data centres, it is high time for integrators to get on board with the cloud and embrace the opportunities it promises.

6

Research companies such as IHS and BCC are predicting VSaaS (Video surveillance as a Service) and ACaaS (Access Control as a service) to grow at 20-30% CAGR over the next 5 years across Europe. This gives integrators and installers a great opportunity to be part of this growth and brings them at the same time new service opportunities due to systems being connected. Concerning hosted video and access control, there are many benefits for integrators and installers. Ease of deployment and reduced installation times, higher percentage remote diagnostics versus onsite ones, new revenue opportunities such as video verification and virtual guard, managed access control are some of them.

For the end customer, the ability to buy into an enterprise deployment on a per device basis can help both small and large businesses to finance their security investment but allow them to scale up or down quickly anytime without the need for CAPEX signoff. With the integrators and installers managing their systems, customers can free up key I.T. resources to focus on what’s core to their business without lowering their security focus. As an industry, we should embrace the cloud and not be scared about it. Many would say systems deployed in the cloud are far more secure than onsite installations due to the multiple layers which need to be breached to get to any data. With business embracing cloud in their day to day businesses, it is now the time for integrators and installers to buy into the cloud and work close with businesses I.T. teams to integrate physical security into their Cloud strategy.

SUSTAINABILITY

The problem with plastic: Why PVC is an unsustainable innovation Erik Nord, Business Development Manager at Axis Communications, discusses why sustainability is such an integral part of Axis’ business operations and why the innovative company aims to become PVC free. In more ways than most compounds, plastics have revolutionised the world and have largely changed the way we live for the better. From offering a hygienic method of handling food and water, to halting the spread of dangerous infections in the healthcare environment, plastics have been providing answers to complex situations since 1907. However, while as a society we are fully aware that the overuse of any natural resource is bad for long-term development and is not a sustainable way of doing business, we are now dependent on plastic in our daily lives. One of Axis’ long-term company objectives is to phase out the use of PVC from its products. PVC plastics, alongside the additives it contains, are causes for concern when it comes to fire safety; cancer; asthma; and humans’ ability to reproduce. This is also a difficult material to recycle and is often subject to improper waste management, leading to the dangerous plastic filling landfills, and unfiltered burning causing a considerable impact to the environment. PVC – what are the risks? When evaluating the environmental and health risks PVC plastics pose, we should consider not only the raw material itself, but also the phthalates that are added to make it useable in more applications. A key concern with PVC plastic is fire safety. While burning, polyvinyl chloride can release hydrogen chloride (HCl) fumes, which pose a serious health concern. Furthermore, when water is used to extinguish the fumes, it will transform into hydrochloric acid, causing significant damage to its immediate environment – including surrounding equipment and people.

14

In addition, when PVC is burned, either in an incinerator or an open fire, dioxin is formed. This is a known human carcinogen and among the most toxic chemicals in the world. Firefighters that have encountered dioxin in the past are known to be at a higher risk of developing cancer. Dioxin is transported through the wind from accidental fires or burning waste material, resting in its surrounding environment and accumulating in plants, animals and ultimately humans. The additives in PVC plastic that help it to achieve its flexible and impactresistant nature are known as plasticisers or softeners. One group of chemical substances often used is phthalates. This is added during the production process but is not chemically bound to the PVC plastic, meaning it can eventually be released into the surrounding environments. As of June 2015, 80-90% of plasticisers produced worldwide were used to make flexible PVC. In 2014 phthalates accounted for approximately 70% of the total consumption of plasticisers, a reduction from approximately 88% in 2005. By 2019, this figure is expected to decrease to 65% globally. This is due to new material alternatives and increased legislation. In 2019, four new substances, all phthalates associated with PVC, will be added to EU directive 2011/65/EU Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS), limiting the use of these substances in all electronic products. Creating a smarter, safer world for all In today’s industry, the use of PVC plastics should be seen as a largely obsolete, rather than a default option. As an innovator, it is Axis’ duty to stay one step ahead of the market.

This ensures its installers and customers are working with future-proofed solutions, driving competitive advantage, complying with the latest regulations and fulfilling social and environmental responsibilities. When a company must decide whether or not to use an unsustainable plastic, it should consider the benefits of accessible alternatives. These factors may include: reducing the risks plus onset of health conditions; creating a safer site for employees and firefighters in case of a fire emergency; lowering the risk of structural damage from burning PVC; and of course reducing environmental damage. Firms are demanding high quality products that deliver innovation at both a technological and sustainability level. With social responsibility at the core of its business, Axis will ensure its commitment to sustainability continues to extend to PVC and beyond. LOGISTICS

Finding the right security solution for PostNord By Kristina Tullberg, Regional Content Communication Marketing Specialist Northern Europe

PostNord AB is the leading provider of communications and logistics solutions to, from and within the Nordic region. The company was formed by the merger of Post Danmark A/S and Posten AB in 2009. PostNord has approximately 35,000 employees and a sales turnover of around SEK 40 billion. In Sweden there are nine so-called logistics centres where items of post are sorted and then stored if necessary. One of these centres is located in Järfälla outside Stockholm. A large number of packages are handled there, approximately 75,000 every day. “Security & Claims is one of the units at PostNord. Included in the unit’s security responsibility areas are, amongst other things, outdoor and indoor perimeter protection, road transport and load carriers, fire safety, flight safety, as well as security routines and crisis management”, says Jonas Westerberg, security specialist at PostNord Sweden. In consultation with Axis Partner, the security company AVARN Security, formerly G4S, PostNord has developed a so-called security concept, which is a policy document, the purpose of which is to achieve cost-saving effects for PostNord when it comes to the purchasing and implementation of security technology in its activities, as well as to ensure that security standards are met. The safety concept covers approximately 600 installations in Sweden, and specifies requirements documents for the installation of burglar alarms, access control systems and CCTV. “Installing security solutions always involves a wide range of actors, such as property owners, electricians, IT departments and more. That’s why it’s essential to have a clear policy document that helps to keep costs down, while ensuring the highest possible quality”, says Jonas Westerberg.

16

In the current situation, PostNord has about 1,000 cameras installed around the country. The cameras used are from the AXIS Q33 and AXIS Q60 series. “We started looking at the Axis cameras in 2013 and today Axis is the ‘preferred brand’ for us, thanks to the camera’s quality, the excellent support and the open platforms”, says Ingemar Johannesson, Senior Key Account Manager at AVARN Security.” We can set up cheaper equipment when it comes to cameras, switches and storage devices, but then we get problems with quality and stability.” The purpose of installing cameras is manifold. Perimeter protection of the area, checking trucks at the points of entry and exit, security and safety of the personnel, quality assurance of internal processes, flow planning in the handling of goods - such as which of the loading docks are available for trucks, to name but a few. “Our customers have requirements for secure deliveries, and cameras help us to fulfil these requirements”, says Jonas Westerberg. When choosing cameras, great attention is paid to the purpose of the camera surveillance. “You can not set up a camera without taking the whole system into consideration and also understanding how the image will be used to achieve maximum image usability,” says Ingemar Johannesson. Amongst other things, the cameras must meet the requirements for identifying people in the area, at the gates, entrances and loading areas, and they should be able to detect vehicles at the driving yard. The quality of the image is extremely important; one example is that the trucks in the terminal drive quite fast, and the safety of the personnel is important, so the cameras must be able to provide clear images even of rapid movements.

“The application areas and the purpose of using cameras have evolved increasingly as technology advances”, says Ingemar Johannesson. “They are used to achieve both increased security and efficiency in operations and for quality assurance of the work flow.” Axis cameras give the option to implement intelligent functions, and this is something that PostNord is both using today and evaluating for the future. For example, alarms can be triggered via the cameras in the event of an indication of unusual behaviour at irregular times by people and vehicles. Examples of other intelligent functions used are ‘Cross Line Detection’ and the so-called guard tour function, where the camera performs an inspection round of the premises, thereby reducing unnecessary call-outs and saving time for the personnel. The cameras are also an important part of the company’s work environment goals. “When we can remotely monitor areas and have automatic alarms directly from the camera, we reduce the number guard call-outs which has a positive impact on the work environment”, says Jonas Westerberg.

TRANSPORTATION

How to achieve safer travel with Axis network cameras 25% reduction in crime at subway stations in the city center. By Lucas Young, Business Development Manager Transportation. With more than 22,000 network cameras on buses, subways, commuter trains, local trains, trams, platforms, and other parts of the stations, SL, Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (Greater Stockholm Local Transit Company) has the largest installation of security cameras in Northern Europe. Challenges to overcome SL identified the need to upgrade its security solution and a major challenge is the complicated light conditions: > In addition to the large light differences between day and night, the light varies greatly depending on the time of year > The light varies greatly depending on where the sun is located in the sky; when the sun is low in the winter, the rays can shine directly into the camera lenses > Inside, the platform floors can reflect the light > A single image can contain both bright light and dark and shadowy areas > There can be a lot of backlight Another challenge is that the cameras are exposed to tampering, dirt, vibrations and extreme temperature variations. The cameras must be easy to clean with a pressure washer. Yet another challenge is the amount of information generated. Due to the large number of cameras on the network, an enormous amount of data is generated, which requires processing and storage. Further challenges include the infrastructure and bandwidth. It is also difficult to have comprehensive and complete control of all cameras simultaneously. The cameras must be easy to control and managed centrally. The cameras must provide a good overview of large areas and provide forensic detail. They must be capable of capturing and reproducing close-ups of people

18

moving quickly, e.g. running, even when the people are moving between the images of different cameras. Operational reliability is another key requirement. “Everything has to work 24 hours a day 365 days a year,” says Kicki Roos, Administration Director for IT at the Public Transport Administration (Trafikförvaltningen) of Storstockholms Lokaltrafik. “The cameras also have to be easy to install, scalable, based on an open standard, future proof, and capable of being adapted to future technology.” Intelligent security solution for exacting requirements The areas covered by the cameras are the ticket halls, escalators, intersections, and the inside of buses, subway cars, tram cars, local train cars and commuter train cars. They also cover platforms – benches, areas where travelers stand and wait, platform edges, and tunnels. All permanently installed cameras in the subway and commuter train stations are connected to SL’s Security Center (Trygghetscentral), which is staffed with operators who monitor video footage in real time around the clock. The cameras installed are primarily network cameras from the AXIS P32 and AXIS P33 series that work together with Milestone Systems’ XProtect® Corporate software, which is specially designed for large security installations. These are seamlessly and effectively integrated with the existing security system and other elements of the IT infrastructure. The cameras are very light sensitive, have HDTV quality, and enable wide dynamic range, which means they can reproduce sharp images even when there are severe variations in light conditions. The network cameras also deliver recordings with a very high frame rate.

To overcome the challenge of bandwidth, the cameras are equipped with Axis Zipstream technology, which reduces the bandwidth and storage requirements by at least 50 percent in video surveillance applications. Zipstream technology is fully compatible with the H.264 standard, wide dynamic range – forensic capture, and Axis Lightfinder technology. Zipstream is available in the new generation of Axis network cameras. The intelligent security solution from Axis makes different types of analyses and smart applications possible, such as recognizing movement patterns and analyzing aggressive behavior. About 200 incidents are reported each day. Less crime and safer travel The amount of crime has decreased sharply since the security cameras were introduced. A research report from Stockholm University shows that crime decreased by about 25% at subway stations in the city center. The incidence of pickpocketing and theft in particular has decreased significantly. According to the survey “The Effects of Surveillance Cameras on Crime: Evidence from the Stockholm Subway”, travelers taking public transport feel safer.

The installation is continuously updated with the latest technologies and innovations. The cameras provide SL staff a lot of support in their daily work with regard to traffic control and for different types of emergency response operations. During evacuations, the cameras provide visual support for announcements and instructions given via the PA system. It is also easier for the police to gather evidence in the form of images from the cameras, thereby facilitating their work. *The Effects of Surveillance Cameras on Crime: Evidence from the Stockholm Subway, Department of Economics, Stockholm University, April 6, 2015.

CASE STORY

Axis cameras capture ground-breaking elephant sleep study at Dublin Zoo AXIS M1144-L HDTV cameras with built-in infrared (IR) provide images for new sleep study and several successful elephant births. Brendan’s findings have provided new knowledge in this area: “Through intensive study of images gathered by the Axis cameras in the bull and cow elephant houses, we learnt a great deal about the varied sleeping patterns of elephants at different ages. We now know that, on average, they sleep about four hours per night. They get this sleep in chunks, which generally get longer as they get older. For example, a young elephant will wake up more than 20 times per night, but older ones may only rise four times a night.” Located in Phoenix Park in the heart of the city, Dublin Zoo is Ireland’s most popular family attraction, welcoming over one million visitors each year. Dublin Zoo has a world-leading reputation for animal welfare and behavior studies. As one of the world’s oldest and most popular zoos, the 28 hectare park is home to some 400 animals in a safe environment, where education and conservation combine for an exciting and unforgettable experience. Dublin Zoo leads the way in the use of cameras for observing the habits of animals, often providing video recordings and sharing live views with animal experts around the world. So much so that Dublin Zoo’s Operations Manager, Gerry Creighton, regularly runs online training sessions for keepers in other zoos, supported by the provision of live video from specific cameras at Dublin Zoo, covering animal training exercises, veterinary procedures, feeding times, births and other key events. Elephant sleep study breaks new ground Senior Zookeeper at Dublin Zoo, Brendan Walsh, recently completed a three-year study of the zoo’s eight elephants using the Axis cameras to better understand their sleep patterns and night-time behaviours.

20

All this and much more was learnt through Brendan’s study of video recordings over 701 nights between July 2012 and July 2015. The results of the study are set to be published in the near future.

Sharing of video with experts around the world Dublin Zoo has deployed an AXIS M1144-L in the elephant training area, where animals are taught to do a variety of activities, including presenting their feet for a routine pedicure. Recordings from the training area are sent weekly to Alan Roocroft, a world-renowned expert in elephant behaviour based in San Diego, California. Alan reviews recordings of these training sessions and informs Dublin Zoo of any potential issues, all without the expense of flying him over to gain these insights.

Veterinary consultants can also be sent these recordings if keepers have any worries about the animals they are looking after. Through in-depth study of recordings of the zoo’s elephant training sessions, the zoo is able to build up an accurate picture of individual and group animal behaviours. The new camera system’s recordings offer clear evidence of certain behaviour, which can be easily shared with the animal welfare and conservation communities around the world. Minimising disruption associated with animal moves Keepers want to minimise disruption when animals are moved as result of animal sharing arrangements between zoos, often linked to breeding programmes to protect numbers of endangered species. To support this requirement, Dublin Zoo uses remote study of video evidence to gain a better understanding of which animals can be moved without upsetting the overall group dynamics.

Gerry Creighton at Dublin Zoo said: “We use the video recordings to identify micro groups within a herd. Based on this knowledge, we identify which animals to move to minimise stress involved in animal moves. The camera doesn’t lie.”

“Installing cameras in an environment such as Dublin Zoo is always going to be a challenge. But once the Axis units we selected had withstood the attentions of some of the zoo’s largest adult lions and gorillas, I knew I had made the right choice. Axis helped us deliver an IP video system built for quality, robustness and longevity.” Declan Kelly, CEO, Kelcom Networking

“We can study vital stages like the introduction of a new bull (male) elephant into a group of cow (female) elephants. We can establish who is sleeping close to who at night and spot any unhealthy behaviours, changing routines to break bad habits and optimise use of space by the animals.” Locomotion studies The cameras have also been used to carry out locomotion studies to ensure animals are getting enough exercise. Recent studies showed that Dublin Zoo’s bull elephant was walking 15 miles per day, which is as much exercise as they naturally get in the wild. Any shortfalls can be acted on by moving feeding stations or making other layout changes. Keeping a watchful eye on elephant births On the use of the cameras for viewing three healthy elephant births over the last year, Gerry Creighton adds: “Everybody wants be part of the birthing process, but a natural birth requires no human intervention in the wild and this is the way it should be. When the elephant calves were being born, we could use the Axis camera and microphone system to zoom in to see and hear the heartbeat of the calves, for example. It’s great stuff. We can even share vital live and recorded video with keepers around the world.” Keeping wild intruders at bay Cameras also act as a great deterrent against inappropriate feeding of animals by visitors, as well as deterring and preventing theft or injury of animals. Axis IR cameras are also used to manage wild badger and otter incursions. Ostrich eggs were being taken and eaten by badgers, while otters were a threat to flamingos during the night. Zoo keepers were able to view these overnight activities via the IR cameras and then set

up humane traps to catch these badgers, before relocating them in the park land outside the secure outer perimeter of the zoo itself. Axis video broadcasted on national TV Irish national television channel RTÉ has an annual series called The last six years. The series production team sometimes use video from the Axis cameras, broadcasting recordings of elephant, lion, tiger and gorilla births over recent years. This has helped Dublin Zoo increase its visitor numbers substantially.

Photo above courtesy of Patrick Bolger

Perimeter security tightened AXIS M7014 Video Encoders were also used to bring 16 analog cameras onto the network. The zoo’s security provision has been bolstered by the addition of a further 65 Axis cameras covering pedestrian and vehicular gates and paths. Axis cameras are also deployed in the zoo’s retail outlets for loss prevention.

Mobile view The zoo’s operations manager, and 12 of the 44 keepers employed at the zoo, are able to access images via smart phones around the clock if they want to keep an eye on the animals that are under their charge overnight.

Live online views help boost visitors to zoo’s website The zoo also wanted to use live camera views to increase visitor numbers to the zoo’s website. Other Axis cameras were to be deployed to tighten perimeter security. Four Axis cameras offer real-time viewing of the elephants, penguins and wolves, as well as the zebra, ostrich and giraffe herds that live on the African Savanna, all via the zoo’s official website. An AXIS P1214-E HDTV camera is being trialled for use as a fifth camera. It will provide live views of the orangutans feeding in the zoo’s new orangutan forest.

CASE STORY

Modern trains in harsh environments need innovative safety solutions ATrain secures and optimizes its rail service with Axis network cameras and laser-based perimeter control from Embsec. ATrain has 180 employees, including train drivers, train attendants and operations management personnel. Seven Arlanda Express trains operate on the Arlanda Line between Arlanda Airport and Stockholm Central Station. ATrain is responsible for safety and security at four stations – three at the airport and one at Stockholm Central Station. There is also a dispatch center at Stockholm Central Station, where up to six people perform real-time surveillance of the camera monitors that oversee the stations and depot. In addition to enhancing safety and security for passengers and staff, the aim of installing the cameras was to prevent graffiti and vandalism to the trains. This has been a problem, particularly at night when the trains are at the depot. “Cleaning vandalized trains is a huge expense, and having graffitied trains operating on the route is damaging to our brand. We are proud of our trains, which have a high standard and awardwinning design,” says Jimmy Ahl, Safety and Security Director at ATrain. ATrain has a zero-tolerance policy for these types of occurrences. They simply must not be allowed to occur. Cameras in combination with laser-based perimeter control Axis partner NOKAS was contracted to investigate how technology could help achieve this zero-tolerance vision. The solution that proved to meet all of the requirements was a combination of Axis network cameras and Embsec’s VFence F-501 laser-based perimeter control. The system monitors stretches along the train routes that need perimeter control, but where physical protection could not be set up.

22

The solution is simple, powerful and fully automated. The laser-based perimeter control sensor VFence F-501 detects passing people and objects at a distance of up to 500 meters. The laser sensor functions without reflections and detects both static and moving objects, regardless of lighting conditions. The laser sensor is connected to Axis cameras and an alarm is sent directly to the camera when a laser beam is broken or a reference point changes. The moving camera is aimed at the occurrence, recording begins and action can be quickly taken. “The components in this system are really top of the line. They meet the stringent requirements of this harsh and sometimes dangerous environment. With this modern technology, we feel very confident that we are giving our passengers and our employees the security and service they expect, says” Jimmy Ahl, Safety and Security Director at ATrain. “In an environment like this, high precision and reliability are everything. We cannot accept too many false alarms,” says Johan Elliott, Key Account Manager at NOKAS. Complicated lighting conditions and requirements for easy installation Axis cameras must also be able to handle the complicated lighting conditions, backlighting and light/ dark parts of the screen that are common scenarios at a station. In these cases, an AXIS Q6045 Network Camera with Wide Dynamic Range is used. In addition to perimeter control, the camera can also be zoomed and controlled to check that signs, ticket machines, elevators and escalators are functioning correctly.

“This helps us provide even better service to our passengers,” says Jimmy Ahl. “Installation was very simple. It always is with Axis cameras – hardly any adjustment is ever needed. It is right the first time – not after ten attempts, which can be the case with other types of cameras,” says Johan Elliott. “At the same time, maintenance on this type of product is not easy. Operation and maintenance are demanding and costly, and that defines what technology we use. It has to be reliable,” he continues. Two incidents have been averted since the solution was implemented in summer 2015. ATrain plans to expand the system and feels that their zero-tolerance vision has already become a reality.
