What the hell is FMF?

Welcome to the FMF experience... one of the biggest independent music events in the country, right here in your own backyard. It’s also one of the biggest parties in Orlando. Celebrating it’s 11th year, the Florida Music Festival is a 3 day (predominantly) unsigned artist showcase, in which more than 175 artists from around the country come to Orlando to play a 30 minute power packed showcase for the attending music industry and more importantly, the fans on 10 stages all within walking distance downtown. Some bands hope to sign with a major, others will go indie and still others are doing it themselves and just want your support. Some bands will rock you hard, others will throw down some hip-hop. But whether it’s punk, indie, metal, pop or whatever the heck you call half of the bands, it’s a blast. Each night there will also be headliners at all the major venues, with THE SOUNDCLASH w. DJ LUPE FIASCO & DJ SKY GELLATLY, CHARLIE WORSHAM, ROOTZ UNDERGROUND, 7 NATIONS and more performing on their respective nights.

Rule 3

Born and raised native Orlando, so I mean it’s where we got our start, it’s what’s in our hearts…It’s such a tight, small-knit community. You know,  everybody around the United States knows that Orlando and Florida is where it’s at. Playing FMF is awesome. It’s great to see in our town just festivals and a lot of bands coming together just for the sake of music. It’s always good to see the diversity, and FMF always brings a lot of that. It’s gonna be radical. Everyone is gonna hear a lot of new stuff. We’ve been working really hard at it, and playing it all around the United States, we’re getting really tight at it. We’re really just excited to play it in our home town, because we got to play it everywhere but here, so we’re gonna play it as much as we can.

L

hen collaborators DJ Lupe Fiasco W and DJ Sky Gellatly dive into discussion about their EMD project

THE SOUNDCLASH, it tends to vibe more like a couple old college roomates and philosophy majors, expounding on their selected paths... and then also a whole lot about their passion for the sounds.

S

KY GELLATLY: Above all, Lupe and I are friends. We both have always had a respect for creative culture and for doing what we can to motivate and support the next generation of creative minds. Being a role model in just words, is different than being a role model in words and action. As friends, about a year and a half ago, we discovered that we both had a passion for electronic music. Well, a serious addiction, actually. And then, like real friends, we just said, “Hey, let’s start DJing together.” And we just stuck to our promise as friends, in and out of Lupe touring, and me with several other jobs. It’s just been genuine and fun from the start.

“we both decided that we should create our own dance album, and also man up and donate ALL of the album profits asa way to raise money for kids..”

UPE FIASCO: After initially conceptualizing “TheSoundclash,” literally two sides of sound or musical tastes coming together (read: Sky and I), we were dedicated to leveraging our project as a way to positively influence culture. We knew that we had to make our own music to add to the canon, and we wanted to stand for philanthropy in a big way. Go big or go home.

S

: Over lunch one day, we both decided that we should create our own dance album, and also man up and donate ALL of the album profits as a way to raise money for kids. We would have appreciated it as kids. We would have been motivated as kids to be philanthropic if guys we looked up to showed us that it was cool and easy to do. So, we really were just like ‘why not’? Doing good shouldn’t be such a hard decision to make. It’s like telling the truth–it’s the most right thing to say always. Even if, sometimes, it’s not the easiest.

L

: Ultimately, when you’ve decided to do something that is rooted in helping kids in need, being creative takes on a whole new gravity. So from day one in creating our EP, we’ve said that we’re making music for others: for others to dance to, for others to have fun with and play in their DJ sets, and for others to receive support from–through our donation of all of our album sales. The EP’s title, Don’t Drop The Flag, is a manifestation of our dedication to supporting the next generation of creative thinkers. The flag we wave, is one that we have to stand for, hold onto, and pass on in due time. And truthfully, if we aren’t laying a positive example for the next generation in a hyperbolic way, we really have no right to even flying a flag today at all. Kids today don’t need anymore hollow heros.

S

: We both had childhoods that were heavily influenced by creative mentors – whether they were teachers or family members. And now that we’re adults, it is our obligation to put our money where our mouths are, and give back to continue powering the engine of creativity and education for kids. It’s just like DJing. Sure, you can play an amazing set solely of other artists’ music. But, when you also create songs that you can play alongside those of others, and that others can play too, you’ve helping to push and influence culture – not just tread water in the creative endeavors of others. Ultimately, it’s the duty of guys like us to at least try and create a tomorrow for kids in need. Kids today need a few more positive role models who are doing good, while having fun at the same time.

L

: We chose to release the of remix “Letting Go” off Lasers as our first song, for a variety of reasons. More than anything, the song’s lyrics speak to a need for our generation to take life by the horns, and just take the lead. There’s so much apathy and complacency in the world. And we wanted to translate that message into an emotive call to action. Let go of what’s holding you back, take control, and manifest your dreams. The song is a perfect kick off to our philanthropic pledge that we’ve tied to our EP. DJ Kue was an amazing partner to work with. With his collaborative talents, we created a track that has powered this message of youth revolution, and made it even more powerful than the original.

M-SQUARED THURSDAY. APRIL18TH . WALL ST PLAZA MAINSTAGE

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

Michael “M-Squared” McPherson is a champion open format celebrity DJ, Producer, and Mood Designer, sought after by A-List Celebrities, Fashion Designers and Corporate Brands. Known for his eclectic sound, style and unique ability to blur genre and generational lines through music. M-Squared’s interest in music started at an early age. He joined the school band as a drummer and created mixes using a dual cassette deck as his turntables, until finally earning his first pair of Technics going into college. While rocking parties through his college years at Florida Atlantic University, M-Squared completed an extensive internship with Universal Music Group and graduated with a degree in International Business. In addition, he has also worked with brands such as Banana Republic and Armani, which helped sharpen his eye for fashion and learn the importance of the music & fashion industries working together. Ready for the world, M-Squared decided to pursue his passion as a creative artist and began DJ’ing and making a name for himself on the celebrity DJ scene and honing his skills as a music producer.

what have been some of your more popular nights and haunts IN OUR HOMETOWN?

M-Squared: I’ve been an active resident in the Orlando community for just over 20 years. I was born in Brooklyn, NY. and grew up here in Orlando. Throughout my DJ career here in Orlando I’ve had the privilege of performing at various venues around the city such as, Hard Rock Live, House of Blues, UCF Arena,The Groove at Universal City Walk, 180 Grey Goose Lounge at the Amway Center, Roxy, Cheyenne Saloon, Dragon Room, GLO Lounge,Voyage,AKA Lounge, 57 West, Rain Nightclub,Tavern on the Lake and many more. I must give a special thanks to all of the venue owners, managers, promoters, and event organizers that have believed in me from the very beginning and continue to support.

Over the past year or so, what seems to be the moving the crowd the most?

M: Over the past year or so, Electronic music has really taken over and seems to be moving the crowd the most here in the states. The high energy in the music is infectious and the people really enjoy dancing to it and having a good time. Also, I like to play a lot of the classics from all different genres, and drop those surprise records at any moment during my set, that also gets the crowd moving and keeps them on their toes!

You recently won the Red Bull Thre3style competition, what do you think propelled your set over the competition in the eyes and ears of the judges and the audience? M: Yes. Well I think it had a great deal to do with just being able to stay focused on what the rules and judges criteria were consistently throughout my set all while showcasing my technical abilities, creative mixing, stage presence, rocking the crowd and taking risks.

Any other special events you have planned for the Spring/Summer on stage and behind the tables?

M: Yes, I am excited and looking forward to playing at this years Florida Music Festival Mainstage! I will be performing in LA with Mark Ronson,A-Trak, Jazzy Jeff and many others at an upcoming Red Bull event. I also have an upcoming event that I will be performing for Tommy Hilfiger, and just continue touring and making music, that’s what I love to do.

Anything special you have planned for FMF opening night warming up the mainstage for The Soundclash?

M: I definitely have some surprises, so I look forward to seeing everyone in the house!

Where else can the locals and visiting attendees check out a M-Squared set during their visit?

M: At the moment, I am traveling more than I am here locally, but please stay tuned to my website and social media for all of my latest news, releases and upcoming events. Special Thanks to Axis Magazine for this opportunity, to my managers Arthur Sims and Fernando Watson, my team the Mood Designers and to all of my supporters! Couldn’t do it without you guys, much love. Design the Mood. (follow @DJMSQUARED)

Pop Star on the rise. CymcoLè is making her way through the microphone into a speaker box and pounding in music lover’s hearts around the world. Her voice has the sound of an Island breeze that combines with today’s hottest dance beats to create a truly unique style. CymcoLè has quickly gained the praise and respect of music fans not only in the U.S but also in Latin America. As a multi-cultural, bi-lingual artist / musician, demonstrating her abilities to sing, dance, play the piano and strum the guitar, CymcoLè has amazed crowds most recently in Puerto Rico performing her original ballad ”Cerca De Mi”.While in Brazil, her single titled “Bring on the Nite”, has become an online, radio and night club anthem across the country, giving her a large fan base which is quickly growing throughout South America. In her personal life, CymcoLè is one of the country’s most outstanding Lacrosse players. Her skills as an athlete and performer aren’t just a chance of luck, for her DNA is tied to Hall of fame shortstop, her father, Barry Larkin. With over 2,000,000 views on YouTube, featured on MTV.com and currently working with some of today’s most talented producers & writers such as Ali Pierre, Gerry Williams, Mister Jam, DJ Saint Paul and many more.

still in your teens, yet you have gained star status in Brazil, and played major fests in South America, how did that recent success come about?

CymcoLé: Ive alway had a passion for South America and Latin music in general. I was connected with one of Brazil’s biggest Producers/DJ named Mister Jam and right of the bat we created a song called “Bring on the Nite” which became one of Brazil’s biggest radio and T.V hits last summer. That song really opened the doors for me not only in Brazil but also across South America.

What are some of the channels that you have utilized to develop as a young artist, in the studio and on stage?

C: I find myself always singing and trying to reach a higher level vocally. My voice is constantly being challenged with all the producers I work with and I love to create new sounds that way. Also I pay close attention to the stars of today and try to create my own versions of their songs even if its just for a vocal warm up or practice.

You are a Central Florida born and bred artist, how would you rate the pop/dance scene here, and what are some of the elements that contribute to it’s energy? C: I think that Central Florida has an amazing Pop scene. There is a lot of up and coming artist and dj’s like myself that have taken a bit of our unique local scene style and made it their own. I think one thing that contribites to the style is the diversity we have around the area and the ability to channel that altogether. What are some of the limitations of being in Central Florida, as well as your age, while developing as an unsigned artist? C: I would say that there is so much going on with Disney and universal studios and so on that sometime I think it takes away from lot of Local things that are going on and it seems like if you want to succeed in the area, you either have to jump on board with them or take a trip South to Miami for a show. I think my age is a benefit for me now because there is a lot of young talent being signed and I feel as if I am matured beyond my age so its not hard for me at this point.

You have a pretty talented family, how has that helped to open any doors?

C: My family has been very supportive of my dream and although we have a lot of talented people in our family we all try and pave our own success. My dad & mom (Barry & Lisa Larkin) has been one of my biggest fans and have been with me every step of the way but they have also let me grow, make mistakes and learn from them all on my own.

Any artists, producers or entertainers you appreciate and aspire to follow in their paths.. and what is appealing about their craft?

C: Growing up most of the music I listened to was Latin. From Marc Anthony to Selena to Tito Neaves to Shakira. All of these artists inspired me to create my Latin Pop music. I also have a Strong influence by Rihanna, Christina Aguliera, and J-Lo.These artist spoke to me growing up and I knew then that I wanted to be an artist myself because seeing how they influenced not only me but people all over the world made me want to do the same.

What’s taking up the most time on your Itunes right now?

C: I listen to alot of Regaeton and Pop music. Mostly Rihanna, P!NK, and Bruno Mars. Most of the music I listen to now is only music that inspires me to create new music. I really like listening to music that sounds like mine because I love to sing along of course! (FOLLOW: @ cymcoLe)

FMF ARTIST: A-ROCK

THURSDAY. APRIL18th .TIER NIGHTCLUB

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

How long have you been an active resident in the community, and what have been some of your more popular haunts?

A-Rock: For about 4 years now. I’ve played a lot of different nights in town.Tier Fridays is hands down the best party in the city. And it’s not just because I play there and feel the need to shamelessly plug it (although I did) but I have special guests monthly come through that provide Orlando with a fresh take on music and what’s being played around the country. I also did a party at Ember last year called Inside Out.A lot of people don’t realize that I had the 2011 Rebull Thre3Style World Champion Hedspin come and guest the night.

Over the past year or so, what seems to be the moving the crowd the most?

A-Rock: I won’t say that hip hop is back, per say. But with the sudden burst of “Trap”, it’s created a great segue with hip hop in the bottle service scene.

How would you compare a night out on Ocean Drive compared to Orange Ave?

A-Rock: That’s comparing apples and oranges. Orlando night life is great, and it’s getting ‘there’. But Miami is recognized throughout the world as one of the best nightlife scenes. With that being said, however, Orlando nightlife is great. But, I think extending club hours would be beneficial to keep from Orange Avenue from looking like a scene out of Walking Dead on the weekends. Anything you have planned for the next round in LA to put your set over the top? A-Rock: I focused really hard on creating a different feel but keeping the energy level constant. I got a lot of great constructive criticism and feedback from my Miami set, and really focused on creating a great set for LA. I’m very excited to represent Orlando on a National Level.

Anything special you have planned for FMF opening night after party at Tier?

A-Rock: What’s great about this particular night, is that I’ll be playing a 4 Table Set alongside my good friend DJ NOVA.We’ve been doing 4 Table Sets for about 3 years now, and each set seems to create some crazy moments. I think Orlando can expect some really cool aspects within our set. We’re A once aspiring college baseball player from the University of Floria found himself behind both excited to play a lot of our own turntables one day. From that day on, his life had speared him into a world of electrifying croweds and records and remixes that we’ve been subsequently becoming one of Florida’s most talented DJ’s. Known simply as A-Rock. working hard on. . He has built his name through his knack for mashing beats with a eclectic range of music genres. In tim, he has disitnguished himself from others with is risk-taking style and desire to develop unique sounds. Where else can the locals and visiting His creativity in his style spurs from several influential artists such as Jazzy Jeff, Q-Bert & Grandmaster attendees check out an A-Rock set? Flash to DJ AM, Linkin Park, and Daft Punk. In the last year, he’s had the pleasure of playing for thousands around the country. His career trajectory A-Rock: Thursdays Vintage, Friday turn an upward swing with his recent first place showing in the regional Red Bull Thre3style competitions. Tier, Saturday 23. I also still do Rok Next up, the nationwide finals in Los Angeles on April 5th. His knowledge of past and present collections Room Sundays 1-2 times a month, of music has begun his venture into musical production crafting a unique sound. His dream in lieu of this which is still the best Sunday party in the city. is the chance to perform for millions around the world. And find a good burger. (FOLLOW: @ DJ_AROCK)

BURNSY'S 10 SIMPLE STEPS to enjoying your first

Ebelieve very year since the very first Florida Music Festival – I that was in 1872, if memory serves correctly –

L A IV T S E F IC S U M FLORIDA

thousands of people send me emails, letters and raunchy postcards asking, among other filthier things, what they can do to make sure that their first FMF experience is what the teenagers in the science club I volunteer with call a hella dope bomb ass experience. And the answer, friends, is rather complex. For starters, you can’t just step right into my insanely awesome lifestyle and expect to run with the big Chihuahuas. It takes many years and a liver the size of Tropicana Field to step up to my level. Also, you need to be ready for spontaneous dance battles to break out when rival gangs appear out of nowhere. After all, is there’s one thing that Orlando is well known for, it’s people who handle problems without violence. But this isn’t to say that you can’t start learning how to have fun like me and my awesome homeless friends, and that’s what I’m here for – to teach you things that will help you avoid being an adult. Today’s first lesson: Popping your FMF cherry and enjoying every last minute of it Spread your wings and check out the bands that play the earlier time slots at the bars off the beaten path. After Step 1: Be familiar with the headlining acts. all, those are the places that Taylor Swift played at just Let’s face it – if you show up to FMF and you have no clue a few years ago, and she grew up and wrote two albums who the headlining acts are, you’re already screwing your- about how I broke her heart. After she became legal, of self out of a good time. This year’s headlining bands aren’t course. completely new to FMF either, as Filter has played the main stage before. By the holy law of the rock gods, they Step 3: Check out my friends specifically. are required to make women’s pants fall off this year. The If you need a primer on bands to go check out, you can’t Dirty Heads and Candlebox, though, are as new to FMF as go wrong with some of Central Florida’s veteran shredyou are, so they, like you, are obligated to bring their A- ders. Off the top of my head, the following acts are worth your time: The Supervillains (an absolute inexcusgame as well. And if anyone is caught slacking, it’s off to a able must-see for all rookies), Dub-T, The Passenger, Bieber concert. The Lighter Exchange and Big 10-4, but only if they wear the mesh shirts that I designed for them. That’s a deal Step 2: Embrace the locals. Over the years, breaker. I’ve made some great new friends thanks to FMF and I’ve watched those bands go on to great things. The problem Step 4: Pick 5 other bands at random and is that right now I can’t remember any of them, so I will vow to go see them. That’s what I do, and that’s how I just assume they are Pearl Jam, Green Day, U2, Adele and discovered my favorite FMF bands of years past, includthe Spice Girls (they loved being naked with me) and not ing Prince and the New Power Generation, the Divinyls, bother going back to check if that’s true or not. Bruce Springsteen and Coldplay.

Step 5: Study up ahead of time. The entire schedule for FMF is available at FloridaMusicFestival. com. Go check it out and then go to that YouTube site all the kids are talking about over their pog matches and search for some of the bands. Learn about them, embrace their music and look like an expert by fist-pumping and singing along. They’ll thank you for it.

Step 6: Don’t fist pump. Sorry, just realized that I endorsed fist-pumping, and I have punished myself with the required Bieber music. Step 7: Treat all ladies with respect. This is an important point for me, because I’m widely considered to be the greatest gentleman in the entire state of Florida, if not the southeast, United States, North America, Western Hemisphere, planet Earth or the Milky Way galaxy. I’m honored so often that I forget easily.

Step 8: Show your appreciation to girls who are boosted up on someone’s shoulders so they can lift their shirts by shouting, “WOO!” or “HELL YEAH!” Girls like that kind of respect.

Step 9: Support your local musicians

by purchasing their CDs and t-shirts. After all, when a band goes on to be the next big thing, that album will become a collector’s item. Just like the Nirvana tape I purchased in 1993.

Step 10: Make sure to behave yourself and

show respect to the police and security staff at all bars and clubs. It’s like my mom always says: “Be nice to a cop, and that cop will be nice to you… by not Tazing your testicles.”

Q A

SIGN MY BAND? CITY ARTS FACTORY • 5:00 - 6:00pm

The annual Demo Sessions headline the day with a variety of record label representatives, artists and producers offering their opinion on the quality of the recorded song.

Q

With hundreds of millions in record sales from a town of only 2 million population, what would you attribute this odd amount of success to? I believe that this town has some magic besides the theme parks. You have a number of very creative, hardworking, risk taking, and driven people here that strive to be innovators in the music industry.

A

Q

What aspects of the entertainment business, happening on a daily basis, do you think the locals would be surprised to find in their own backyard? I think the average citizen would be surprised to learn the amount of super star recording artists who work out of local studios, A-list producers that live and work in the area, and new artist development that happens here on a daily basis. The talent ranges from singers, song writers, video directors, managers, celebrity DJ’s, to music directors for major tours and shows.”

A

24

Q

Through natural progression, and the development of digital media, you deal a lot with intellectual property law. How should the young artist prepare and/or protect their works at an early stage? I think that young artists should spend an equal amount of time learning the business aspect of the industry and developing their craft. Intellectual property is what this business is about - trademarks, copyrights, music licensing, publishing, etc. I encourage young artists to find qualified professionals that will work with them to develop their careers. They should attend law and business seminars for the industry and read educational material discussing their profession.

A

Q

Singer, songwriter, producer, musician... are there any basic checklists they should all think about when beginning the ‘shopping process’ of their work? They definitely need to make sure that they are diligent in protecting their intellectual property and ideas through filing the appropriate copyrights, having appropriate contracts to ensure the proper rights and permissions for their songs (i.e. production, song writing and license agreements). They should retain a qualified professional that has valuable contacts and relationships in the industry to represent their best interest. They need to do their research and homework on the business side of the industry while continuing to be innovative and creative in presenting their art.

A

Q A

What are some of your most interesting projects you are involved in at this stage? I am really having a lot of fun at this stage of my career on the creative management side of the business. I have had the pleasure of representing wonderful people like Michael McPherson p/k/a M-Squared as an emerging producer and award winning open format DJ. I’ve recently partnered with Fernando Watson, known for his work with mega artist Flo Rida, to represent a number of A-list producers, musicians, and artists, I’ve begun to develop numerous television

aXis thoughts: “Too many pieces of music finish too long after the end.” Igor Stravinsky

and film projects that are music and lifestyle base and I continue working with great people, friends, and clients like Robert “Raab” Stevenson, producer, vocal coach, songwriter, Scott Messina, music producer, D.J.,TV producer, and the preeminent music manager in the business Johnny Wright. On a non-music note, I have also begun working with the most successful group in women’s fitness “Team Bombshell”, run by the lovely Shannon Dey.”

Q

Any trends you are witnessing unfold in the pop/rock world right now that the aspiring music business student should be preparing for? I believe that the great new artists are enjoying being more creative, staying true to their artistry, and taking risks. I was watching an interview recently with the great Clive Davis and he discussed how artists like Miguel, Adele, Frank Ocean, and others are making a big impact by not being safe or cookie cutter in their approach to music and their career. It’s also very cool to see the impact of technology and social media on music careers and the development of EDM music along with the superstar DJ/ Producers involved with the genre.

A

Q A

Any trends they should be looking to avoid? Lol! Hopefully avoid the legal and business pitfalls that kill careers. I hope that artists remain true to their art and convictions while surrounding themselves with people who can add something to their development and offer real guidance. It’s very important that artists continue to develop their craft and have people who can assist and bring out the best in them. This does not mean that they will always agree or that it will be easy, but in my opinion true greatness is a product of hard work, struggle, luck, and the ability to be accepting and overcome challenges. I look forward to the emergence of new artists and the continued greatness of managers like Johnny Wright and established artists like Justin Timberlake to keep innovating and grabbing our collective interest.

CITY ARTS FACTORY • PRESENTED BY BMI

You have practiced in the Central Florida area for nearly two decades, and have witnessed many aspects of the scene ascend and move on. What are some of your fondest memories of the early pop era here in Orlando in the late ‘90s? The music scene in Central Florida has been really diverse and innovative over the last two decades. From the bass/hip hop sounds of companies like Cheetah Records and Rip It Records, to the great pop sounds that emanated from Johnny Wright and Wright Entertainment Group, and now the great sounds and production from DJ Nasty, Nasty Beat Makers, and The Runners Production Company, it’s been a real experience witnessing the growth and diversity of music here. My fondest memories stem from observing and participating in the development of some of these groups and watching them fulfill their promise. Some started from humble beginnings and reached the highest peaks of the music industry. Personally knowing their struggles, discipline, and hardwork gives me a sense of joy, pride, and satisfaction.
