THE RULES OF THE GAME
RULE 1
Rule 3
YOU’RE ABOUT TO GET FMF’upped! SO DON’T BOTHER TO FIGHT IT!
VARIETY AND VOLUME ARE KEY! So many bands, so many venues, how do I get a ticket or pass? (One wristband gets you into all 15 clubs for one night... the biggest rock and roll club crawl)! You can go to any participating venue in the Downtown area and get ID’d at the door for a wristband for that night. You can then get into that venue and every other venue that is part of FMF2015 for that night only. All venues are Age and Capacity Restrictions apply. All we can do is offer you the opportunity to go for free! Example: You can go to Wall St Plaza to start the night. Go in, have a beer, check out a band. Then you can walk over to The Social and see a band, then walk over to Magnolia, then go over to Cheyenne Saloon to check out a band. The music world is yours!
Rule 2 PREPARE FOR CULTURAL OVERLOAD! 3 DAYS of MUSIC IN THE STREETS & MUSIC BUSINESS KNOWLEDGE... that they don’t teach you of in college.
What the hell is FMF?
Welcome to the FMF experience... one of the biggest independent music events in the country, right here in your own backyard. It’s also one of the biggest parties in Orlando. Celebrating it’s 15th year,(technically the 14th year, but this whole 14th FMF2015 thing got confusing, so we skipped the 13th like a rock and roll elevator) the Florida Music Festival is a 3 day (predominantly) unsigned artist showcase, in which more than 100 artists from around the country come to Orlando to play a 30 minute power packed showcase for the attending music industry and more importantly, the fans on 10 stages all within walking distance downtown. Some bands hope to sign with a major, others will go indie and still others are doing it themselves and just want your support. Some bands will rock you hard, others will throw down some hip-hop. But whether it’s punk, indie, metal, pop or whatever the heck you call half of the bands, it’s a blast. Each night there will also be great bands at all the major venues, with locals, regionals and nationals all rocking and more performing on their respective nights.
WHAT ARE THE AGE REQUIREMENTS? Rule 6 VENUES MAY HAVE DIFFERENT AGES! Some venues may be 18 and Up, but not many. Due to overcrowding on Friday and Saturday night, however, some venues may opt to go 21 and up. If you have any questions there will be an official FMF volunteer or door person at each venue to answer questions or check FMF2015.com for updates as more information comes. Saturday Industry Conferences are ALL AGES all day long from 1-6pm.
WHERE DO I FIND OUT THE SCHEDULES? Rule 7 GRAB AXIS OR POCKET ROCK GUIDE! Look through this issue of aXis Magazine that’s in your hands for an Official Venue Map and Showcase Schedule, or most major media in town, available at all of the FMF venues. Also the Orlando Sentinel will have the schedule and map in their Friday, Calendar Section and then again each day of the Festival in their daily Life & Times or Calendar sections. You can also go to www.fmf2015.com and download the schedule at any point. Once again, there will be an official FMF volunteer or door person at each venue with additional up to date schedules and maps.
Rule 4 DON’T GO FMF-ING UNPREPARED! Some of the best out of town and up-and-coming bands you might not know are worth checking out! The online schedule has the artists’ profiles linked so you can check out the bands before heading downtown. The schedule link is available on FloridaMusicFestival.com.
Rule 5: ENJOY DISCOUNTS ON COORS LIGHT throughout more than 20 venues! Ask The Bar For The FMF2015 Coors Light specials during the shows! We have teamed with these fine tastes to offer you drink discounts at every venue. Ask your bartender for the official drinks and beer of FMF2015 and save some cash, get buzzed and get a ride. aXis thoughts: “After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.” (Aldous Huxley)

whAT “I love music. I love photography. I put the two together so I wouldn’t have to cheat on one. I began sneaking my camera into shows 30+ years ago, I am rarely without it since. These days, I shoot anything that shows up in front of my lens. I learned black and white development processing in high school and color processing at the one-hour photo hut – my own tiny university. My work has been published in magazines and newspapers, and on album covers, but I most enjoy seeing it on a beat-up band flyer stapled to a telephone pole. I’m in Central Florida but love to see a hill or two every once in a while and am happy to travel.”

In the late 1970s and early ‘80s, Orlando shook off the disco fad and cemented its place as a rock and roll town. Big name rock acts played at venues like the Tangerine Bowl’s Rock Superbowl – and big names recorded and mixed their tracks here, too. Recording studios like Bee Jay Recording Studios drew heavy-hitting rock acts to Orlando, and Central Floridians came to the shows in droves.

here are two types of people in this world, those that rabidly refresh their browser the day Bonnaroo posts their annual Artist Line-Up... and those that simply do not enjoy music! Ok, so that may be an exaggeration, but millions of diehards consider the annual announcement a rite of spring, while hundreds of thousands prepare to make the summer trek to Manchester, Tennessee for what has become the seminal music and arts experience. xperience may be the keyword when describing Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, GoogaMooga, and the myriad promotional campaigns that Superfly Marketing Group produces around the world. Jonathan Mayers likes to create memorable experiences. Along with his co-founders at Superfly Presents, Mayers designed and developed the concept that raised the standard for music festivals, and outdoor events in general. The above mentioned festivals are considered game changers in their respective fields; giving proper due to the arts, while celebrating the community around them. he 15th Annual Florida Music Festival & Conference is excited to welcome Jonathan Mayers as the 2015 Keynote Speaker. We had a chance to discuss the origins of Superfly, Bonnaroo and some of his other interests prior to the Keynote Interview on Saturday, April 18th at the Pugh Theatre in the Dr. Phillips Center.

Xis: Welcome to the Florida Music Festival. For the aspiring musicians, music industry students and reps, it’s not too far off to say that you and your partners at Superfly started off similar to a group of musicians coming together as a garage band and now being an arena selling act! onathan: We were definitely scrappy. We had, and we still do have, an entrepreneurial spirit about chasing our dreams and learning as you go, and surrounding yourself with a great team of people. But that is kind of the excitement as an entrepreneur, you don’t know what everyday brings. It can be as big and as creative as your mind will allow it to be. It’s been an exciting ride.
J

Xis: Having one of the more successful event portfolios in the entertainment world, how do you wake up each day and stay motivated? onathan: I look at it as I want to keep learning, growing, and working with people I enjoy spending time with. I want to keep being creative and pushing the boundaries. It’s not just driven by financial reward. You don’t want to be in this business to be in the same place you were a year ago or five years ago, you want to keep learning and feeling inspired. I get a lot of satisfaction out of building our team and delegating, and seeing these people in many situations do a better job than you could have done. There’s a lot of joy and value in that as well.
“In
the early days you have everyone around you saying ‘you can’t do this, get a real job’ and trying to explain it to your parents. Really just having a belief in what you’re doing and a passion for it, that’s what kept
J

Xis: Early on were there any moments where you guys looked at each other and collectively said ‘we can’t do this’ and considered throwing in the towel? onathan: Ya, many times! Right before we conceived Bonnaroo and launched that, we were promoting shows in New Orleans. It seemed like the more shows we did, the more money we lost. We kind of had a moment of ‘we are really enjoying this, and we’re passionate about it, but we aren’t making any money, we are losing money.’ We were looking at each other and asking ‘what are you gonna do after this’ and then we went off to a festival and got re-inspired. We decided to pivot our business model, and not only give ourselves more opportunity financially, but also creatively. We had many inflection points, and we still do, where we are evolving daily.
J
us focussed on still doing it.”
A J
Xis: So you probably had a few naysayers at that point as well? onathan: In the early days you have everyone around you saying ‘you can’t do this, get a real job’ and trying to explain it to your parents. But really just having a belief in what you’re doing and a passion for it, that’s what kept us focussed on still doing it.
AJ
Xis: How did your team originally assemble? onathan: I went to school in New Orleans and fell in love with the city and the music. I worked there after college and interned at the New Orleans Jazzfest, which is one of the premiere events in the world, and got really inspired there. I did a show at Tipitina’s for graduation, and got a job booking the club. I met my business partner there, we both shared a love of the same music. So we started collaborating on shows together and left there, and doing shows on our own, and working on shows around Mardi Gras and Jazzfest. That’s when he brought in his friend, and I brought in my best friend from High School, and we started doing shows. We did shows around special events, then made that pivot into doing our own special events.
“It’s not just driven by financial reward. You don’t want to be in this business to be in the same place you were a year ago or five years ago, you want to keep learning and feeling inspired.”
A J
Xis: Any advice from those early days that you can offer young students and musicians to help with their learning curve? onathan: I think, surround yourself with a great team. If you’re an artist, ultimately find that manager, that agent, that label, your bandmates, that team. These are the people that through thick and thin and shoulder to shoulder will help you.You need a great team. When we set out to do Bonnaroo we had never done an outdoor concert at that point. The biggest show we had done was a 3000 person theatre show.We identified people that had a lot more experience than we had, and we built a team that believed in our vision, and that’s how we were successful.
