Welcome to the FMF experience... one of the biggest independent music events in the country, right here in your own backyard. It’s also one of the biggest parties in Orlando. Celebrating it’s 17th year, the Florida Music Festival is a 3 day unsigned artist showcase, in which more than 125 artists from around the country come to Orlando to play a 30 minute power packed showcase for the attending music industry and more importantly, the fans on 10 stages all within walking distance downtown. It’s all about discovering new music... We had a young Taylor Swift play her first show at Wall St Plaza when she was only 14 years old!

IT’S TIME TO BUY INTO FLORIDA’S HOTTEST BAND KICKS OFF THE 17th ANNUAL FLORIDA MUSIC FESTIVAL who: where: when: info:
This Little Underground presents SALES The Social Thursday, April 20th • 10:30pm @wearenotsales • wearenotsales.com
SALES is the collaboration between long time friends Lauren Morgan and Jordan Shih. The Florida indie pop duo self-released their eponymous six-track debut EP on September 22, 2014 featuring the singles “renee”, “chinese new year”, “vow”, and “getting it on”, and were named “Ones to Watch” by Hype Machine + BBC Radio 6 Music. So far, the songs on SALES EP have over 3 million streams on Soundcloud and over 10 million streams on Spotify. They have since headlined tours in the US, Canada, and Europe, selling out concerts in many major cities. Embracing a DIY ethic, their long-awaited fifteen-track debut album, SALES LP, was self-released on April 20, 2016 along with the singles “big sis”, “jamz”, and “ivy”. The intimate album is an homage to their limitations with time, equipment, money, and space. Working on music tirelessly by moonlight between dead-end jobs, both the LP and EP were recorded from an apartment bedroom studio. The LP was produced, mixed, and mastered by SALES, and created under the duo’s “as is” approach to music — each track explores new territory as they heavily rely on experimentation within their artistic process, whether it is switching lead guitarists, moving over to let someone else hold the mouse, recording vocals through Apple headphones (rather than the stellar SM7B), or inserting a 404 into a ballad. The distinct sound the duo has created is minimal, yet meticulously crafted, emotive and incisive. SALES LP has caught the attention of Pitchfork, Pigeons & Planes, My Old Kentucky Blog, Crack in the Road, and many others. The addition of the SALES LP to their tiny repertoire is only the beginning of an everexpanding sound, and a small step in a new approach to music: empowered by the digital listening experience, and completely independent of a record label.
aXis: So to start… what took us so long? But seriously, sometimes it takes those closest to you to realize what they got… so in your perspective why are you completely owning NY, LA, San Fran and it has taken the local folks a little longer to catch up? SALES: There is definitely a larger turn out in major cities but I wouldn’t say it has taken the locals longer to catch-up. Our first shows were here at “The Space” and Total Bummer Fest (RIP). However if we seem under the radar locally it may be because our natural habitat is the bedroom studio. We are either here or @ lunch. aXis: Self managed and a legit ‘indie’ artist, you release “renee” followed by your EP, and received immediate accolades, yet the music business isn’t all rags to riches. How were the early days knowing that you had something good, and a fan base growing, but you just had to get to them? SALES: When we released “renee” it was just to share and see what could happened. We emailed the few independent bloggers that we knew and invited all of our FB “friends” to like our SALES page. It grew from there. We didn’t have many expectations starting out. Now that we’ve released more music and it’s caught on a little-- we both feel the pressure to get our music out there further and further. We believe in the slow build. Ultimately without a publicist or industry contacts, it is out of our hands. We just have to keep our heads down and keep make music we believe in. You’ll find out about us eventually. aXis: Was it all DIY from the start, how and when did an agent and touring start to happen? Being at FMF, it’s all acts trying to get on the road, so when did you take the leap of faith and hit the road? SALES: We didn’t want to tour unless there was a demand and we didn’t want to lose money. My first band played all the time locally, for free, with no merchandise, and no recordings. We would definitely recommend having your ducks in a row before playing shows/touring. Our first tour was a little run up and down the East Coast. A friend from THE INTERNET, Gregory Hill, put it together for us after we received an offer to play in Brooklyn. After that tour went well, we were contacted by our current booking agent Joan Lee with APA. So to answer your question, we waited to tour until it wasn’t a leap of faith at all. It was a calculated risk. aXis: Man overcame machine and you have real arms swirling over a drum kit these days… how did that decision come about? SALES: The drum machine had a terrible hardware hiss. After seeing bands with a live kit, we were inspired to do the same. There is an intangible energy to a live kit, and layering those natural roomy drum sounds with our signature sampled sounds continues to be a learning experience.
aXis: Experimentation is key to your recordings, as well as live set. How do you keep it interesting each time out, and for that second and third show for the local? SALES: Experimenting in the studio is our happy place but this music was never intended leave the bedroom studio. The live show is a little nerve wracking. Consistency has been the major focus. There are so many factors that can lead you to live show demise. With our nontraditional set up, having a new sound person every day, and sometimes new equipment every day-- nothing is solid. Now that our offers are getting better we can work on making the set a little more consistent. We are working with a sound guy now, and will have him travel with us in addition to hauling our own equipment. aXis: FMF2017 opening night marks a year to the day of your full length release, which has seen over 15 million spins on Spotify alone… what’s different now for the band than a year ago, and what do you hope will be different a year from now? SALES: Last year if you asked me what I did, I would say, “I’m a cashier.” And at the beginning of 2017 I said, “I’m a musician.” But as 2017 flys by, going into 2018 i’ve been saying, “I’m a producer.” We are learning a lot and branching out with new equipment. Recording used to be capturing the best moments of improvisation. Moving forward we are going to be a lot more intentional, and confident. aXis: Best live music experience you have ever had as a player and a fan? SALES: Our best live shows are hands down, always in Los Angeles. That city is magic. Individually we’ve been to a lot of moving shows. We went to a BATHS show in 2010 with BRAIDS. It was a great show. Jordan tried to hang-out with BATHS but he declined and said he was going to go to sleep immediately. If you ask us to hang out after a show, we will probably also decline and go to sleep right after. aXis: If you could open for any tour ever, past or present, what would it be? SALES: It would be banana town to open for Cher or Young Thug. aXis: Best live music experience you have ever had as a player and a fan? SALES: Our best live shows are hands down, always in Los Angeles. That city is magic. aXis: Not to be morbid, but you are on that final ascent to the mosh pit in the sky… as you leave tangible Earth, what song/score/piece would you want playing…? LAUREN: “Human Nature” by Michael Jackson JORDAN: “Look At Us Now” by Sarina Paris

aXis: So you guys really made a splash at the Okeechobee show at Beacham this past February, seems you’ve been busy gigging since, how is your set received in the cozier acoustic/pub venues as opposed to massive Beacham vibe? RR: The audience seems to enjoy the more intimate style of our acoustic set with the hospitality of the brewery or pub. The full band shows have a lot more energy, you’ll find us dancing around the stage and the audience vibes along! aXis: New tracks done at Dreamwalker, best way to describe the new tunes from the EP? RR: It’s vibrant rock! We have a variety of different influences heard on the EP from synth-pop to alternative rock. The songs are passionate and relatable. aXis: Orlando has always had a vibrant local scene, how do you feel it’s embraced the band, from the venues to the media, to the fans? RR: Orlando’s vibrant scene has embraced Run Raquel through sound and color. Orlando is a lively city with a diverse crowd that has influenced us to create just that; fun, upbeat music that is a little different from song to song. Even though our fans are as various as our songs, we seem to get the same line from new fans “I was supposed to go home early tonight but after I heard you guys play, I had to stay till end!” I also love the support from Orlando Weekly, Axis, and WPRK that keeps us in the local gossip. And as far as color we have Jennifer Friedland to thank for all her artistic talent and help. Her style and energetic color goes hand in hand with our music. aXis: Have to ask about the name, where did it derive from? RR: Run was the perfect verb to describe us. Running to us represents moving the band in a forward direction. Always improving and getting better with each step we take as musicians. It’s a symbol for following our dreams and keeping on our journey. Raquel is our lead singers middle name. aXis: If you guys hit the road during any era, what bands would be your ultimate opener and headliner on a three band bill? RR: Queen and Micheal Jackson Rock god and king of pop!

FMF2017 presents St. Valley Cheyenne Saloon Friday, April 21st • 8:30pm @StValleyMusic • Reverbnation.com/StValley5
A pair of local troubadors working the youtube circuit, Hannah Daly and Gatlin Thornton had spent many an hour crafting songs together, before deciding to brand themselves the duo St. Valley. Melding their Americana spirit with pop melodies, they’ve developed a genuine following well before receiving their highschool diplomas. Upon graduation, half the duo, Gatlin will hit the books at Belmont and the songwriting circles in Nashville, while continuing the duo via digital mediums. Look for both Hannah and Gatlin performing in Central Florida throughout the Spring, and onstage at the Legendary Cheyenne Saloon during FMF weekend. aXis: We have seen Gatlin and Hannah in their own installments at FMF over the past few years, but how did St. Valley derive and your relationship as a duo come to fruition? Gatlin: Well, we met each other at church back in 2014 and quickly became best friends. At the time we were both pursuing our individual careers though we would occasionally write together. Then in 2016 we decided to join forces and make music together. aXis: Still being under club age, how do you find opportunities to perform out as a duo? How has it been received? St.Valley: We’ve been able to perform out at different festivals and coffee shops! We have a great support system and fan base who always comes out to support us. aXis: Word is your the next one to leave Otown for Nashville. Will you continue working in tandem on songwriting and performing, and what are you plans up there? St.Valley: Gatlin will be attending Belmont in Nashville, while Hannah is staying in Orlando. We will still continue writing and performing together, it just gives Gatlin an excuse to come home and Hannah to visit Nashville!
aXis: Being a musician/student at Belmont, in Nashvegas, do you think you’ll get much studying done? St.Valley: Gatlin, one half of St. Valley, figures she’ll get a lot of studying done since she is majoring in Songwriting. So, studying for those classes would be just her cup of tea. aXis: You guys rock a lot of covers on youtube, what is your favorite track and artist to do live right now and why? St.Valley: Our favorite right now is John Mayer’s, “Love on the Weekend”. The harmonies in that song are just so fun to sing! aXis: If you guys hit the road during any era, what bands would be your ultimate opener and headliner on a three band/artist bill? St.Valley: In the ultimate dream world, we would want to open for Vance Joy on his tour!

FMF2017 presents Kasson Wall St Plaza Thursday, April 21st • 7:30pm @KassonBand • KassonMusic.com
Kasson has shared stages with national acts such as Awolnation, Fall Out Boy, Young the Giant, Weezer and more. They have also performed as headliners at the Florida Music Festival with crowds of over 1,800 on the Wall Street stage in consecutive years. Their single “Gold” has been streamed over 80,000 times on Spotify & Rdio, as they make their third return to the FMF Mainstage! aXis: So you guys really made a splash in the scene since your last appearance at FMF. How do you maintain momentum and keep it interesting for the local/regional audience? Kasson: That’s the million dollar question, right? For starters, we’re always working to develop a great team to build on our live performances with new music, sound, lighting and crowd participation to create a fun and engaging experience at every show. For us it’s all about staying connected and always working to discover new ways to reach people. We do our best to keep our social media personal by having real conversations with fans through twitter and facebook. We recently started doing open mic gigs in an effort to connect with the local music community and people we might not reach otherwise. aXis: Being a brother tandem in the band, how do you guys get along during the rehearsal and tracking process having grown up together? Kasson: There’s definitely a different dynamic to working with your sibling, especially your twin brother. It’s nice because we pretty much had the same start to life with the same musical training at first, so for us to vibe off each other typically comes really easily when writing and producing. There will always be some bickering and arguing when working with siblings or even long time friends. It was just a matter of learning how to translate that into productivity. That was definitely a learning experience for us and we recognize how far we’ve come with that. aXis: Orlando has always had a vibrant local scene, how do you feel it’s embraced the band, from the venues to the media, to the fans? Kasson: We love it! We’ve been fortunate enough to get started in this city where there are so many great local venues to play who are always pushing to bring in acts of all kinds, new and old, to capture an audience. We’re also hearing from a lot of the local night clubs lately who are trying to build a weekly/monthly rock scene. This is such a cool step forward that we hope becomes a real trend here in town. In terms of media, it’s just so abundant now. Everyone has a blog these days, a voice, and typically some kind of listener. On top of all that we can’t leave out the fans. They’re the ones that keep us doing what we do. Being in contact with them, seeing them at shows, talking with them after, hearing from them through their own personal blogs, it’s what keeps us motivated and working hard toward our goals. aXis: Have to ask about the name, where did it derive from? Kasson: We get this a lot. As children, we (Durik and Evan) grew up in a small town in the mountains of New York on Canada Lake. One day I (Durik) was cleaning out a classic Chevy Caprice that my grandfather had given me just before he passed and in the glove box was a letter with his name and the street address to the where we grew up, Kasson Drive. Our grandfather had built a few of the houses on the street as well as owned and operated the local general store. That street was part our Grandfather’s dream and, for us, was a representation of his strength, wisdom and persistence in working hard everyday to realize those dreams. aXis: If you guys hit the road during any era, what bands would be your ultimate opener and headliner on a three band bill? Kasson: Led Zeppelin, Kasson, Rolling Stones

FMF2017 presents G.W. Souther Church Street Market Friday, April 21st • 11:30pm @gwsouther • www.gwsouther.com
G.W. Souther is one of Central Florida’s rising acts consisting of 4 guys from the southern states of Alabama & Georgia. The Orlando-based band is currently blending the likes of Soul, R&B, Blues, Funk, & Rock guaranteed to keep you entertained and in good spirits. You can catch them at B.B. King’s Blues Club in Orlando, Florida every Monday night playing the blues as well as many of your old time favorite classic tunes. They are currently spending the majority of their time in the studio building a body of art that will in hopes be released by the end of the year. Stay tuned... aXis: Growing up in Bama and Georgia, how would you compare the Orlando music scene to your hometowns? GW: Orlando has provided us with a chance to earn a living doing what we love. I mean we love home too, but we don’t see much of that as original artists back home. The experience here in Orlando has been amazing for us so far. aXis: You’ve had the steady gig at BB Kings, how is playing a consistent venue like that compared to some of the other local bars and clubs on the regional circuit? GW: We try our best to treat every venue the same way. The only difference is the song choices that we sometimes have to avoid at B.B. Kings as you could imagine why. Not that it takes away from the show, but it disciplines us to be versatile in not only song choice, but more so the specific style of the song. Other places we can flip songs our way a little bit more. Either way, it’s all fun to us. It’s still music at the end of the day. aXis: So performing in that setting, you are forced to throw the party each night, what are some of the band’s crafty tricks to get people up out of their seats and moving? GW: Well in the original music world, you don’t really know what works until you’ve developed your songs over time. Places like B.B. Kings are fairly easy when the crowd comes to have a good time. You can almost guess what they want to hear next sometimes. How you know that one classic song that the husband and wife once danced to when they first married, or the folks who’s roots are the old school classics, or just simply a party crowd that walked in the door ready to leave it all there. Having sat around and listened to the oldies our parents played when we were kids and experimenting with the new era of music has given us an unlimited platform to entertain. Once we have them dancing and having a great time, we just have to experience that moment together. aXis: Weava on keys also did a lot of session work mixing and tracking with major pop artists. How does that help and influence the band’s tracking as well as live performances? GW: We all create music and have been making music for years prior to G.W. Souther. Any pop music influence you hear is 9 times out of 10 Weaver’s doing. We are always arguing about music. Its not a bad thing though. It’s actually a beautiful thing once we all get in rehearsal and play what music was created. It opens the door for so many ideas to experiment with. Blending the likes of live instrumentation and software production to develop this album has been quite an experience. We all bring a different lane of the musical taste to the table. When we contribute to our many focus points such as studio production and on stage performance, there’s so many ideas that come to mind and we are only just getting started. aXis: If you guys hit the road during any era, what bands would be your ultimate opener and headliner on a three band bill? GW: That’s an even harder question but Bob Marley’s vibe along with the work ethic and production level on and off stage of Michael Jackson and Prince would just do it. Let’s say Bob Marley opens and Prince close. Too tough to answer though.

FMF2017 presents John.K Wall St Plaza Friday, April 21st • 7:30pm @MusicbyJohnK • MusicbyJohnK.com
With depth that accompanies wisdom, the grit of anxiety and influences of yesteryear’s troubadours, enter John.k: a singer-songwriter whose artistry spins on a luminous axis of voice and soul. His highly-anticipated indie-pop debut, scheduled for March 7, 2017, is a powerful and energetic composition guaranteed to exercise the hair from your arms through its chilling harmonies and gospel undertones. “Runnin” seamlessly blends sharp, melodic pop lyricism and heartfelt blues propelled by lush instrumentation and an instantly unforgettable hook. Rarely does such a new name in the market deserve to be labeled as a true find, but such is the case with John.k. “Runnin” is the first single off his forthcoming full-length LP, slated for a Summer 2017 release and combines jaw-dropping majesty and sonic invention, showcasing the artist’s inimitable vision and talent fully and without cliché. And this is merely the beginning – expect a stacked remix package, the official music video for “Runnin,” following his recent sold out tour with X Factor USA winners Alex and Sierra. aXis: So your single ‘Runnin’ is exploding on various web channels and socially, let’s talk promotion first, how did you intro the track, and get the momentum rolling? John.K: After Nylon Magazine showed interest in premiering ‘Runnin’, we turned our main focus to Spotify playlists. Young & Free immediately picked us up and the single landed on New Music Friday a few days after. This combination really gave ‘Runnin’ legs
aXis: Orlando has always had a vibrant local scene, how do you feel it’s embraced you as an artist, from the venues to the media, to the fans? John.K: I’m looking forward to finding out.
aXis: You have played with a trio, as well as solo, how do the experiences differ, and what set up are you bringing to the FMF Stage? John.K: There’s no better feeling than being completely in the pocket with a group of musicians. That being said, there’s a vulnerability in playing solo that you don’t always get with a full aXis: On the production side, you worked on this locally and have created a band. For FMF I’m going to make a solo performance feel like I’m being accompanied by a full band. I want to bring the best of both worlds and take listeners on a journey. I’ll have my vocal production team, how does the collaboration process come about? John.K: Two years ago, Rob Zarrilli and I had an a cappella concept for a song. FMF2017 presents Eden Shireen Wall Street Plaza Saturday, April 22nd • 7:00pm @Eden_Shireen • EdenShireen.com
Eden Shireen has written her own narrative in the music industry by expressing her own melodic storytelling with an eclectic blend of pop, indie and folk. The 20-year singer songwriter from Land O’ Lakes, Florida is capturing audience hearts with her freshly scripted lyrical tales of heartbreak and young love. Noted in recent area press as an up and coming young artist to watch, Shireen’s popularity has been on the rise since she became a 2015 Florida GRAMMY Showcase finalist and the headliner of the Eden Shireen Live in Manila, Philippines tour. With two EPs available on iTunes, Shireen has set her goals on reaching audiences beyond her Tampa Bay area hometown. aXis: You made your debut at FMF fresh out of high school at the Florida Grammy Showcase, how was that experience cutting your teeth to an industry showcase crowd? Eden: Being involved with the Florida Music Festival fresh out of high school was an amazing growing experience for me in terms of a live showcasing of my recorded work. It was actually the first time I had put together a full band and performed with that many musicians on such a huge stage. It was a wonderful eye opener to the ventures that music could lead me to and the benefits of playing live with such a diverse group of musicians. aXis: How did ‘showcasing’ help to craft your live show and songwriting as opposed to just working in the studio? Eden: Showcasing helped to craft my live show and songwriting in terms of allowing me to see the powers of those two things individually. How your song sounds and vibes in a songwriting session is very different from how it may feel when performed live. When I write my music, I think of how the songs will translate live in terms of production and presence, but you never know what your audience is expecting – you truly must be confident in your work and execute it with the belief that it is who you are as an artist, and therefore, in a songwriting session you must really believe in what you’re writing. It all starts there. aXis: The Tampa area has a fairly diverse music scene, would you say the venues have embraced the local scene, as well as some of the Fests like Gasparilla and others? Eden: Tampa has truly grown in the last two years; it’s so amazing to see the kind of local growth that is happening. Venues like The Orpheum, The Local 662, The State Theatre, The Crowbar, and the Hideaway café, are venues that are opening their doors to the bands really trying to breakthrough and gain a fan base. A radio station in Tampa, 97X, hosts Local Band Spotlights at Ferg’s Live for bands to compete in hopes of opening at the Backyard BBQ and the Next Big Thing festival. I’m currently competing in the 97X Backyard BBQ competition – it’s amazing that we as local musicians have these opportunities. aXis: Have to ask about the Philippines tour, how did that come about, and how was that experience? Eden: I decided after my first record came out I wanted and needed to have more than my close friends and family members listening to my music. It was difficult to really find a way to have my music heard, so I decided to delve into cover tunes on YouTube. Ed Sheeran was widely popular at the time, so I decided to cover one his lesser-known songs. In choosing the love interest for the video, I asked a fellow musician, one I truly respected and who had an established fan base. I had hoped his fans would watch the cover, like it, and find my music, and hopefully connect with it. Thankfully, that’s just what happened. He was planning a tour of the Philippines for the following summer, and since so many of his fans liked my music, they signed a petition to have his management/production team there bring me along. I can’t express how this detail affected me. The fans wanted me to tour as well. Because of this, the production company decided that not only would I open for this artist, but that I would headline my own show, host my own meet and greet, and conduct live radio interviews for my fans.

FMF2017 presents Chase The Jaguar Wall Street Plaza Thursday, April 21st • 8:00pm @ChaseTheJaguarMusic • ChaseTheJaguar.com
Chase The Jaguar is a Miami-based indie rock band formed in early 2016. Their self-titled EP was released 4 months after the band was born, surpassing all expectations, and being the first step for the band to start gigging on the most important venues in south Florida and touring around the US and internationally. David and Sebastian have been playing music together since childhood. Since Mike and Kevin met the Fox brothers the band has been together: first at the studio, to later start performing under the name of CHASE THE JAGUAR. aXis: A couple Argentinian born brothers by way of Miami, how did you come about being highly influenced by the Brit sounds of Radiohead, Muse and others? CTJ: Our love for brit music/ bands really stems back from chidhood, our parents loved the Beatles, Pink Floyd, and The Rolling Stones, and they also loved Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel and Queen. So our ears are conditioned to love bands ftom England. Lets be honest England had produced some of the best bands and acts in the history of music. aXis: On that note, how do the brothers get along, does it ever get ugly like another Brit pair from Oasis?! CTJ: The best part of being in a band with your as brother is that you can help each other aXis: If you guys hit the road during any era, what to grow an develope on a dirext and honest way. Thats also includes cursing at each oher bands would be your ultimate opener and headliner and having agruments but we are nothing like the Oasis brothers. They need therapy lol on a three band bill? CTJ: To be honest South Florida is behind when compared to the other music scenes of CTJ: “We were trying to find a good name for the band and the USA when it comes to the genre of music that we are into. FMF2017 KEYNOTE: KEVIN LYMAN
@KEVINLYMAN @ROSENCOLLEGE @2017FMF
what: FMF2017 welcomes Kevin Lyman where: UCF Rosen College • Darden Auditorium when: Friday, April 21st • 11am who: @KevinLyman • VansWarpedTour.com The Florida Music Festival & Conference celebrates 17 years of introducing top tier music industry innovators to the aspiring music business students, regional industry and independent musicians. The 17th Annual edition is excited to announce a vital game changer in the business of live music, welcoming Warped Tour founder and seminal festival creator Kevin Lyman of 4Fini Productions. We caught up with Kevin on the evening of his Warped Tour 2017 line up announcement party to talk about the business of punk rock, touring and his favorite home away from home... Central Florida! aXis: Going into your 23rd year, what’s the secret to continuing the energy and maintaining creativity for the annual returnees? Lyman: That’s 23, it’s the 23rd year actually. It’s kind of trying to curate a festival through their eyes and ears and try to give them a platform to enjoy and experience different things. So it just, I don’t know, it’s what I do well. You know some people fix boat engines well. aXis: You were born to do this. Lyman: I guess I was born to do creative events and try to intertwine all the things that I do now. aXis: What are some of the challenges introducing new blood to the audience and on stage? Lyman: You don’t get trapped and keep booking the same thing. You gotta open your mind to experience new music. Everyone doesn’t realize that Katty Perry was that new blood person on Warped tour, Bebe Rexha is all over the radio, or G-easy. You gotta open your mind when you come to Warped Tour. aXis: Is there a punk rocker born every year, or do you see th younger generation skewing to more different sub-gernes? Lyman: No, I think punk rock is in your heart. So you get a punk rock in country and play country, but still be country. You could be rap and still be punk rock. Punk rock is more spirit than music. I’m hearing some great punk rock. I don’t want to take an easy cliche and say every time there’s a weird time in politics you get great punk rock, but we’ll probably have some great punk rock songs in the next few years. aXis: Your lineup intro is in Orlando and Florida seems to be home away from you and the festival, so what’s the allure for Orlando? Lyman: No, I think punk rock is in your heart. So you get a punk rock in country and play country, but still be country. You could be rap and still be punk rock. Punk rock is more spirit than music. I’m hearing some great punk rock. I don’t want to take an easy cliche and say every time there’s a weird time in politics you get great punk rock, but we’ll probably have some great punk rock songs in the next few years. aXis: Is there a punk rocker born every year, or do you see th younger generation skewing to more different sub-gernes? Lyman: Fishing. I love fishing. I love coming down here. I love the water. I love the ocean, and I love the everglades. I like nature settings. aXis: Any fond your crazy or craziest memories of past festivals in Florida or in Orlando specifically? Lyman: It usually always has to do with the rain or the mud, [and] wind, but it also has to do with waking up and watching when we were down in [the] park camping. You wake up in St. Petersburg and you see the dolphins swim by the tour bus. It’s a very special day, so some people say “Why don’t you play the amphitheater?” I go, “We wouldn’t have this view.”
aXis: What’s your favorite warped performance, and was it here or anywhere else? Lyman: My favorite would have been in Spain. We played there and we played in the Bull Ring, where all the bulls run, in the running of the bulls. We were playing in this ancient bull ring, then we all took showers in the bathroom. I remember that day pretty well. aXis: We did an interview with Brad Nowell from Sublime in 1995 for the Warped preview, and he claims that you guys wouldn’t let him bring Lou Dog on the bus, since they had to share with other bands, Is this true and do you allow dogs now? Lyman: That is true. I didn’t like Lou Dog, I will admit. I love animals, but Lou Dog was an untrained animal and he bit a lot of people. So I didn’t let him come. Now it’s a balance, a person raises their dog and they have insurance. aXis: Any advice for aspiring tour promoters at local colleges, and how should they start digging in before and after graduation? Lyman: Get as involved as you possibly can in every facet. Don’t just work on punk rock, if you like punk rock. Learn how to make sound a a church. Get as much exposure as possible when you’re young, and get that experience. It will come in handy. Later on [you can] specialize and do what you like. aXis: If you could do back and book three bands for the ultimate all time Warped Festival main stage, who would they be? Lyman: The Ramones, The Clash, and the original Dead Kennedys. - Sydney Stubbs
