FOOSANER ART MUSEUM 1463 Highland Ave., Melbourne 321.674.8916 Recurring daily • 10am-5pm / Tix $5 Pop Art emerged in London in the mid-1950s and in New York during the late 1950s and by the late 1960s, it was the dominant avant-garde style. Artists in the movement attempted to target a broad audience by using images that were easy to recognize and understand. Drawing from consumer packaging and borrowing images from popular films and TV programs, Pop Art, with its commercial appropriation and use of bold colors, revolutionized the way we look and think about art.

UCF FOOTBALL PREVIEW
The 5 Most Important Things You Need To
Know About
UCF Football In 2015
- Ashley Burns @MayorBurnsy
photo: UCF Athletics Communications
When beloved dreamboat quarterback Blake Bortles left UCF after his terrific junior season to be drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars, most Knights fans were left wondering, “What now?” For many, it was time to start fashioning nooses because the Fiesta Bowl MVP had left us and there was no way that we’d ever recapture the glorious magic of that miracle season. For others, it was an awakening and realization that in college football, there is always life after Bortles. Players always leave, whether they do it after two seasons or four, and it’s up to the coaches and fans to make better players want to follow in their footsteps. So when the Knights continued their American Athletic Conference of America domination with a 7-1 season in 2014 to capture a share of the conference championship – because real conferences want three champions instead of one – no one should have been surprised. It took a little longer than some of us would have liked, but George O’Leary finally seems to have a revolving door of talent, and winning seasons are now something that come in recurring years instead of every three years. Progress! But what about 2015? The Knights’ receiving corps took a huge hit, losing Breshad Perriman to the Baltimore Ravens in the first round of the NFL Draft, while Rannell Hall signed with the Bucs and human highlight reel J.J. Worton failed to use my idea of wearing a fake mustache and re-enrolling at UCF as G.G. Morton. Thanks for nothing, G.G. Unlike 2014, though, replacing those receivers (and a defensive MVP like Clayton Geathers) might be a much bigger challenge for O’Leary and the Knights. Can UCF continue its American Athletic Conference of American College Sports in America the Beautiful domination and win another conference championship? Yes. Here’s why:
1) With more power comes more George.
Despite my many, many previous criticisms of George O’Leary, I’ve always been fond of the idea of the Grumpy One taking over as the school’s athletic director. Now that it’s an interim reality, the man is basically the law of UCF sports and he answers to no one, damn it. That means that he’s going to look across the field each Saturday (or Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, depending on whatever our weird TV deal calls for) and know that he’s the better man than the other team’s coach. From that point, O’Leary will have no problem running up the first half score by one or maybe even two touchdowns before going into his patented second half clock-killing gameplan.
2) Is Brent the Key to success? Get it? Because his name is Brent Key.
If you could go back to last season and ask random UCF fans their thoughts on then-offensive coordinator Charlie Taafe, chances are most of them would throw up on you. That’s not related to Taafe, just a statement on how drunk the majority of UCF fans usually are on game day. Those that don’t have BACs higher than their GPAs, however, would have likely rolled their eyes and complained about Taafe’s boring offense and lackluster playcalling. Now that Brent Key is calling the plays on offense – presumably as an audition for the head coach gig – maybe things will be different. They’ll need to be different, considering that wide receiver exodus I mentioned earlier. Hey, speaking of new coaches…
3) Wait, Chuck Bresnahan came from WHERE?!?!
To call the turnover of the defensive coordinator job for UCF a clusterfuck would be an understatement. After several changes of personnel, O’Leary hired Chuck Bresnahan to take over defensive duties for a squad that has been the backbone of this program for the last few seasons (although the defense was underwhelming at times, but that’s bound to happen when they’re being leaned on to win games every week). Does that name sound familiar to you? Probably not. It probably won’t even sound familiar to USF fans, even though he was the Bulls’ defensive coordinator in 2013 and 2014. Those seasons were quite forgettable to our geographically-challenged rivals, as Willie Taggart’s bus sputtered to 2-10 and 4-8 records, respectively. Can Bresnahan make a difference with a better unit with smarter, more talented recruits? God I hope so.
(Alternate theory: His firing from USF was a smoke screen and he has simply waited until UCF panicked and needed a cheap, local candidate for the DC job, and now he has signed on to destroy O’Leary’s system from the inside. Don’t ever rule out collegiate football espionage.)
4) Who the hell is catching the damn ball?
Let’s just assume that Justin Holman’s experience makes him the starting quarterback in 2015. God knows what will happen by Week 3, and for all we know the Bo Schneider Era could start after Holman’s first lazy interception over the middle into the waiting arms of a safety who is so surprised that the pass was thrown directly at him that he almost drops it. The big question is which receivers will step into the roles vacated by Perriman and the other guys, and help UCF win another conference title. The answer? No clue, bros. Jordan Akins is essentially the No. 1 WR for the offense, but he only had 12 catches last year. Taylor Oldham is the next most experienced with… three catches. Don’t worry, though. There’s talent in the receiving corps, but we all need to realize that this team will be very one-dimensional early on.
5) We’re gonna have a nasty case of the runs.
If healthy and if the offensive line is as good as it has been the last two seasons, William Stanback and Dontravious Wilson could be the most dynamic 1-2 rushing combo in the nation. That’s not hyperbole. They are really, really good running backs and complement each other quite well, so if Holman/DiNovo/Patti/Harris/Schneider struggles with the inexperienced receivers early on, and he likely will, Key and the offense will likely rely heavily on the ground game to wear opposing defenses down. We should pray, though, that this won’t turn into an entire season of that lazy, predictable “take the ball and run forward” playcalling that has plagued this program. If the Knights get freaky naughty with the run, they could be deceptive and devastating against everyone. As always, with this vanilla ice cream offense, that’s a huge if.
Prediction:
9-3 overall (7-1 AAC)
In non-conference play, UCF will lose to Stanford and South Carolina because of O’Leary’s indifference toward winning those games and being ranked and getting everyone fired up and excited. In AAC play, UCF’s only loss will be to USF, because even while terrible the Bulls played up against the Knights, while the Knights just played, and that will catch up to UCF this year. Still, UCF will win the AAC championship and probably head to a bowl in a boring city.
