UCF Tailgate Concert Series presents LUKE COMBS w/ Bailey Callahan IOA Plaza (Spectrum Stadium) Thursday, August 31st • 4pm

UCF announced country music star Luke Combs will headline the UCF Tailgate Concert Series prior to the Knights’ Aug. 31st season-opener. Combs’ hit song “Hurricane” was atop the country charts for two weeks earlier this summer. His brand-new hit single “When It Rains It Pours” is currently Top 25 on the Billboard Country Charts, while the new album This One’s For You climbs the mainstream charts! Admission to Combs’ performance as part of the UCF Tailgate Concert Series is free. The concert, along with the remainder of the UCF Tailgate Concert Series performances, will take place in IOA Plaza, just west of Spectrum Stadium. Combs takes the stage at 4 p.m. prior to the UCF-FIU football game, which kicks off at 6 p.m. “Once again this season, our goal is to continue creating the most unique game-day experience in college football,” UCF Vice President and Director of Athletics Danny White said. “We’re looking forward to bringing an artist the caliber of Luke Combs to IOA Plaza for the first installment of this year’s Tailgate Concert Series.” With gritty, grizzled vocals, brazen songwriting talent and a dynamic live show, River House Artists/Columbia Nashville’s Combs stormed onto the country music landscape as a force to be reckoned with. Named a 2017 “Artist To Watch” by Amazon Music, Billboard, Bobby Bones, CMT, Huffington Post, Nashville Lifestyles, Pandora & Rolling Stone, the 27 year-old Asheville, North Carolina native released his critically-acclaimed debut album This One’s For You on June 2nd, and has been living on the road and on the charts every since. The album debuted No. 1 on the Billboard Country Albums chart and is the largest debut country artist release this year. Combs’ debut platinum-certified smash radio single “Hurricane” made country radio history, topping both the Billboard Country Airplay Chart and Mediabase chart for two consecutive weeks – rendering Combs, the first debut country artist to hold a multi-week No.1 since Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise” and the first debut solo male artist to accomplish the feat in 9 years. After college at Appalachian State, Combs -- a true road warrior -- built his avid fan base, delivering over 200 rowdy, hold-nothing-back shows per year. By the time Combs followed his calling to Nashville, he had an army of fans behind him, three self-released EPs and a set list full of songs that are true, authentic and demonstrate his signature modern throwback sound. In addition to his appearance at the UCF Tailgate Concert Series, Combs hits the road with Brantley Gilbert on his cross-country The Devil Don’t Sleep Tour through September 2017 and joins star-packed summer festival line-ups at CMA Music Fest, Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival and Windy City Smokeout. UCF FOOTBALL PREVIEW

@aXisOrlando | august 2017 | p17

UCF VETERANS PLOT THE PATH BACK TO THE BOWL SEASON

Words by Ashley Burns @MayorBurnsy The 2016 UCF Golden Fightin’ Gosh-Dangin’ Fast and Furious Knights football season taught us a lot about what to expect from Scott “The Handsome One” Frost and his young, new era. For starters, the biggest lesson we learned was, simply: Lower your expectations and you’ll be happier. I mean, 6-7 and a bowl appearance following one of the dumbest seasons in college football history? That’s better than a National Championship. Okay, not really, but UCF will probably never play for a National Championship, and that’s fine. Just give us a few Fiesta Bowl-like memories now and then, and all the suffering in between will be worth it. Or, at the very least, beat the teams that should be beaten. That’s the second biggest takeaway from last year: Frosty the Not-Slow Man knows how to win the easy ones. Goodness, that was a refreshing change of pace. So, what about this season? After all, last season is always but a fading memory. Hell, I already forgot all about that Cure Bowl loss? Let’s kick off this year’s completely scientific and not at all biased and uniformed UCF football season preview with a look at the schedule.

The Road to a Second Fiesta Bowl Win

My favorite win from 2016 was the 53-14 drubbing of FIU. I think back to that shor t period when FIU was rumbling from the bottom ranks of Florida teams, as Mario “Burnsy Still Thinks He Should Have Gotten the UCF Job, but isn’t Mad with How It Played Out” Cristobal had that program fired up and going places. That was annoying, because absolutely no way, dudes. Not on our watch. For tunately, that came and went (while UCF peaked on the back of THE BORT and then collapsed in hilarious fashion… again) and now we’re back to the Knights curb-stomping the Panthers. I love that FIU is the opening matchup this season, because it’ll be another huge win and set the stage for a season of power and authority. Memphis? ##*&$’ toast, bro. Maryland? Eat a bowl of turtle #&$# soup, jabronis. Maine? #@&% outta here, fam. Cinci, ECU, SMU, UConn and Temple? American LEAST, amiright? All wins. I’m almost bored with this fluff nonsense.

Still, two games excite me:

1) 9/16 vs Georgia Tech. We’ll call this one the O’Leary’s Exes Bowl. Now, settle down, I’m not making fun of good, old George anymore. While I love how much my “humor” upsets people, I’ll leave that fun in the past and let people bend the knee at his statue. I only bring him up because I am very hur t that I wasn’t invited to speak at his recent Georgia Tech roast. The jokes I could have told for that crowd… But I won’t hur t anymore O’feelings. As for the game, UCF wins by seven touchdowns. 2) 11/24 vs USF. Everyone has a way of judging a coach’s success. Mine will always be not just the ability to beat USF, but the recognition of how impor tant it is. Last year’s game was as intense and competitive as it gets. Most people think USF will be even better this year (winning the magnificent Birmingham Bowl builds nationwide confidence and esteem, after all) and they’re right. USF is going to be very good, if not great. But UCF will be historically great. Knights win this one by 50 and the toilet on the USF team bus overflows and everyone gets poop on their shoes on the ride home.

Final Season Prediction: 12-0, American East champs, Fiesta Bowl champs The Gazillion Dollar Question

“Hey Burnsy, you’re brilliant and handsome, so what’s up with the QB position this year?” In my humble opinion, the most impressive thing about UCF going 6-7 last season is that the Knights did it with terribly inconsistent play at arguably the most impor tant position. If there’s any stability at QB this season, this team will be significantly better, because the rest of the role players are very good. Obviously, I’m predicting perfection, which is totally reasonable and definitely doesn’t disqualify me from being taken seriously, so I believe we will see McKenzie Milton take a big step forward. My gut tells me this is true, and my gut has only ever been wrong about thinking Hot Pockets have nutritional value. In defense of Milton, he had a huge amount of hype last season for no good reason. photos courtesy UCF Athletics

Here are things people told me about him: “Bro, he’s like Marcus Mariota, but he has a better arm.” “Bro, he’s like Marcus Mariota, but he’s faster.” “Bro, he’s like Marcus Mariota, but he can throw a ball into the large hadron collider and solve the mystery of antimatter.” And so on. After watching him last season, all he has in common with Mariota is his initials, and that’s good. We shouldn’t ever compare a freshman QB to an NFL star, because the pressure is unfair. Now, what we need to hope for is that McKenzie “The Red Stapler” Milton has learned from this pressure, and he grows from it, while fans chill the #&%$ out and let this kid figure it out. If he doesn’t? Maybe Darriel Mack, Jr. steps in and states his case. Maybe “Pistol” Pete DiNovo steps up in what feels like his 13th season at UCF (nothing against the dude, I just feel like he’s been on the team for a long time). Or perhaps the answer will be Noah “The Wahoo Wonder” Vedral or Sean “Don’t Call Me Spencer” Pratt. My money says Milton figures this out. (Mainly because I’m not ready to see some hack use the headline “Milton’s Paradise Lost” when he loses the star ting job.)

Oh, and the Other Guys!

I have considerably less to say about the guys surrounding the QB spot because I think there’s enough talent at RB, WR, and TE to make Milton seem like he’s very good for a sophomore season. At RB, I like what we saw from Jawon Hamilton last season and especially his ability to break big plays. I really liked what we saw from the very explosive Adrian Killins, Jr., and I especially love his last name for an athlete, so RB is going to be just fine. (Also, I doubt we’ll see much from freshmen Bentavious Thompson and Cordarrian “Mr. Tennessee” Richardson, but I’m excited to see them in the future, and I like that the position has strong depth.) At receiver, I know I’m not shattering many monocles when I predict that Tre’Quan Smith will have a huge year, but I’m predicting he will have a huger year than anyone else is predicting. He’s going to have the hugest year, so huge it’ll make something really huge look small. Book it: 1,800 yards and 15 TDs. The one thing I can’t predict but really want to happen is for Jordan Akins and Jordan Franks to emerge as UCF’s version of Gronk and Hernandez, except without all the par tying and bodies.

And Then There was Shaq

I don’t think the defense will be nearly as good as it was in 2016, and that’s fine. The defense deserves a break. Losing four key players will sink most expectations, but that just means it’s time for this “UCFast” thing to happen so we can enjoy a powerful offense again for the first time in what feels like an eternity. All that really matters this season is that we appreciate just how awesome Shaquem Griffin has been. He’s an inspiration on and off the field, and that makes him the very rare kind of guy fans will talk about for years to come. Yes, we remember the stars for a few seasons after they’re done, but we remember the heroes forever. And while that is about as cliched as I can get, this dude is the real deal. So, when you’re stretching your legs out on the metal seats in front of you this season, and sipping from whatever clever contraption you used to sneak booze into the Bounce House, try to pay a little extra attention to Shaq and cheer a little harder when he’s on the field. We may never see another player like him again.
