Somewhat big sister, little sister venues, the legendary Beacham Theatre and it’s next door WHAT// neighbor The Social have witnessed some of the biggest names in music pass through their doors, rock their stages and do just about everything else in the green room post show! The Social has been going strong for more than 30 years under different names, but made it’s rock and roll mark as The Sapphire in the early '90s and then continuing that reputation as The Social this past decade. Everyone from Kid Rock to Death Cab For Cutie has played the roughly 350 capacity room. It has become Otown’s CBGB’s if you will, and back up that reputation with every cred band that has roamed through town. The Social’s proprietors reopened The Beacham to live music after more than a 15 year hiatus, offering up a concert hall for about 1200 in the heart of Downtown. The late ‘80s into the ‘90s saw bands like The Black Crowes and Primus rock the hall, and more recently acts like The Killers did invite only gigs for lucky fans. The Social is welcoming MANCHESTER ORCHESTRA, GREEN RIVER ORDINANCE, BOMWHY// BAY BICYCLE CLUB, CIRCA SURVIVE and more, while The Beacham has a killer Fall line up with M83, EDWARD SHARPE, OWL CITY, MINUS THE BEAR and others. The best part about these venues is that you can dip across the street to Finn Henry’s, The WTF!// Lodge or Lizzy’s for a pint, or Wall St Plaza for some grub preshow. There used to be a tunnel below Orange Avenue for the old theatre in the 1940’s to escort the actors to their hotel(now offices above Finn’s). Now seeled off, the tunnel and The Beacham basement are rumored to be haunted by dead actors.

When you first met this roommate, you were thrilled that she seemed to keep the place so neat and tidy. But you’ve quickly learned that there’s no such thing as clean enough in her eyes. If you’re snacking on some chips in the living room, she’s standing by armed with the vacuum to snag any crumbs that may fall. She created an elaborate chore chart the week you moved in, and it includes cleaning tasks you’ve never even heard of. For your birthday, she got you a personalized duster – a notso-subtle reminder of your least favourite of her assignments.

Your roommate obviously admires your taste in clothing, as she is always taking things out of your closet. You’re not opposed to sharing, but you’re not thrilled to find your favourite blouse or sweater in a heap on the floor after she’s worn it. When you suggest that she ask you before borrowing your clothes, she plays dumb: “Oh, I thought that was my shirt.”

ROUSE RD

You were so happy for your roommate when, two weeks after you moved in together, she met the guy of her dreams. You just didn’t plan on sharing your place with him, too. Now those two are attached at the hip. He eats, sleeps and showers at your place, which of course means you have higher grocery and utility bills and you have to fight one more person for use of the bathroom. You’d really love to talk to your roommate about it and ask whether they can spend some time at his place for a change, but you can’t get a minute alone with her.

Enough said!

MCCULLOH RD

The lurker is always in your personal space — hanging out in your room, asking you what you’re doing that night (and if he can come along) and trying to be friends with every friend you bring over. You’ve never seen the lurker leave the house on his own; he may even work from home.

The Slob

If you’ve ever lived with a clean freak, the slob might seem like a welcome change. But only for a day or two. This guy leaves his laundry in piles all over the floor, doesn’t do his dishes, refuses to take out the trash and never helps clean the place. Oh, and he seems to have an aversion to showering.

The party animal is a social butterfly, and all of that socializing seems to take place in your home, at full volume. She has dozens of friends who have all decided that your place is the place to be. They have parties every weekend — and even some weeknights. Of course, you’re always invited to join in on the fun, but while you’re not opposed to having a good time, you also enjoy a good night’s rest.

BREWSCHOOL...

KEEPING YOU HIP TO THE hops

BLACK & GOLD Brews for the pregame with Ericka of

World of Beer UCF Let’s keep with the local school spirit of your WOB and talk Black & Gold brew. First of all, what are the best dark beers that mix well with a lighter flavor? Ericka: I know what you’re thinking; ‘she’s probably going to choose a cider, something light and fruity’… Well you’re only half right! Let’s mix a tangerine flavored wheat beer, Lost Coast Tangerine, instead of a cider, with some dark brews. Since Lost Coast Tangerine has a tangerine/orangey taste, my first choice would be mixing it with Young’s Double Chocolate Stout. Just think about it: Chocolate covered oranges; (brings back memories of smashing a Terry’s Chocolate Orange); you get that smooth chocolate taste with a just enough of that tangy summer, tangerine/orange taste! Second, dark beer I’d pair with Lost Coast Tangerine would be Guinness. Crazy?! Just try it! With Guinness’ light body and dry stout taste, the tangerine will be much more apparent, really showing you who the fruit is around here. Lastly, I’d pair Lost Coast Tangerine with Cigar City’s Maduro Brown. First off, anything from Cigar City is awesome because they’re from Tampa and their Maduro Brown is available year round! CCB Maduro’s flavor has caramel/ toffee sweetness with notes of

chocolate and espresso so combining it with Lost Coast’s Tangerine Wheat’s tangerine and orange flavor and aroma will have you thinking you’re one step closer to an exotic vacation rather than hittin’ the books! We can’t promise a tan though. What’s the top 3 lighter ones? Ericka: The top 3 lighter beers are Reissdorf Kolsch, Kronenbourg 1664, and surprisingly, Xingu. Reissdorf Kolsch is a kolsch style, light color, light body, light taste. Perfect for a pool day…er, study day I mean. Next is Kronenbourg 1664, Frances #1 selling pale lager. Light color, light body and a clean taste. Great beer for watching football! Go Knights! Lastly, Xingu is a schwarzbier from Brazil. Schwarzbier is German for black beer… Black colored light body beer you say? Preposterous! It is not though, really! Stop in any WOB and ask for Xingu and be ready for a surprise! It looks a little intimidating with its dark color, but the first sip proves this beer has more bark than bite! Kinda like our bartenders. It’s great for people that like both light and dark beers!

What are the best ones already being done, like ‘Black & Tan’s’, etc, and if you could mix anything with a Guinness, what would you mix? Make up your own dark/light brew for brew school? Ericka: Black Velvets are really popular- This is Guinness atop a Cider (though the original was mixed with champagne). Easy drinking, great flavor. Another popular one is a Snakebite- an even blend of a pale lager and a cider. Who doesn’t love making sssss sounds when ordering a Snakebite… oh wait, that’s only me? If I could mix anything with a Guinness, I’d mix it with Cigar City Blueberry Muffin Brown Ale. I know you’re thinking, ‘a stout with a brown ale?’ But it’s a Blueberry Muffin Brown ale! It’s just enough Blueberry Muffin goodness mixed with the dry stout roasted taste to make your heart warm….even if your ex said it was cold as ice! If I could brew any beer for brew school right now, it’d be a pumpkin flavored imperial stout. We’ve already got our first pumpkin beer in store and it’s my favorite time of the year so a lot of pumpkin, nutmeg, cinnamon, and allspice is all I can ask for. Who can resist the taste of a pumpkin imperial stout? I’d give up my mom’s pumpkin pie any day for a pumpkin imperial stout!

RX NATION

aXisFIT BADASS of the MONTH

EAT

You might have seen her on the cover of aXis or promoting Miller Lite around town. Her true passion is fitness and we caught up with Lauren Kisner to find out what she is up to... >> What do you do to stay fit? Lauren: Staying positive minded is one of the biggest keys for me to stay “fit”. A healthy positive mind give me the energy and drive to work hard even when I am exhausted. I am very diligent on only having healthy food in my house. On average I train 6x a week. Weights 3x and my track workouts 3x. I enjoy HIIT style workouts and always look for new activities to do to stay motivated. Recently to shake up my routine I started boxing at a local gym as well as joining The Bar Method in winter park that will help me build more core strength.

PITA PIT (various locations)

GARDEN More choices than a farmer’s market (no cheese).

FALAFEL

Rolled chickpeas with spices. Give chickpeas a chance.

>> Where do you train and why? Lauren: I am a firm believer that there should never be an excuse for not being able to train. Whether it be outside, in a gym, or even in your living room there is ALWAYS a place to workout. My favorite place is the track being that I train for track and field. The sky is the limit there. I can get a great interval workout in, plyometrics, and even incorporate the stadium for modified pushups...dips..and other activities. If its raining I do circuit training with just my body weight in my living room.

HUMMUS

Chickpea spread. Hum-a-nah, hum-a-nah!

DRINK Dogfish Head Tweason’Ale Style: Fruit Beer ABV: 6% Key Ingredients: honey, Strawberries, sorghum The verdict: The fruitiness of the strawberries is balanced by mild hoppy tones. Leave it to Dogfish Head to create an “off-centered” ale without gluten. One of the most interesting of the bunch, if not the most recognizably beer-like.

TRAIN

>> What is your diet philosophy? Lauren: Don’t stress ON dieting. I am all about creating good habits. It takes time to develop a healthy diet and exercise regimen. Don’t rush it. When people do a complete 180 from their norm and try fad diets or crazy exercise routines they often fall off the wagon. If you work slowly at incorporating healthier foods and exercises into your day to day life it will benefit you ten fold in the long run. The things I worked on first were consuming around 90 oz of water per day and packing my food when I was away from my house so not to be tempted to by fast foods. >> Favorite healthy meal? Lauren: I shoot to have a lot of color on my plate. For a healthy dinner I will have grilled tilapia, steamed asparagus and broccoli in a light coat of olive oil, and one of my favorite nutrient packed veggies a sweet potato!

LAUREN KISNER

>> Favorite cheat meal? Lauren: Oh, my goodness that is easy...if I am going to cheat I am going ham haha. I love pizza and a really good beers!
