Gary Clark Jr. House of Blues Saturday, February 20th • 7pm Houseofblues.com • @HOBOrlando • 407.934.2583
Ever since 2010, when Gary Clark Jr. wowed audiences with electrifying live sets everywhere from the Crossroads Festival to Hollywood’s historic Hotel Café, his modus operandi has remained crystal clear: “I listen to everything…so I want to play everything.” The revelation that is the Austin-born virtuoso guitarist, vocalist and songwriter finds him just as much an amalgamation of his myriad influences and inspirations. Clark Jr. hits the House of Blues later this month, with a nearly sold out venue, you may already be wondering what you missed! aXis: Having been dubbed the chosen one with your debut back in 2012, how do battle back the nerves & hit the studio for your follow up? Clark Jr: I didn’t try to fight the sophomore slump. I just wanted to make the best possible record that I could make. I’m not trying to live up to expectation or opinion. I just want to make music for music’s sake. aXis: The world is yours, so why did you choose to head back to Austin to record, during the limited downtime on tour? Clark Jr: Being back home was really key. It was everything. I could walk to the studio, which meant my real life, my reality, was just right there and I drew from that. aXis: You really found your voice, on just about every instrument with this record? Clark Jr: I played most of the instruments on the album so if anyone says the drums suck, or the guitar sucks, it was me. If they loved it, that was me too! I felt comfortable, I was in my comfort zone, I was in my creative space. I could really just be. It let me make sure everything I did really meant something and came from an honest and real place.
who: Mute Math where: House of Blues when: Friday, Feb 19th • 7pm info: Houseofblues.com @HOBOrlando 407.934.2583 More than a decade after the arrival of their debut EP, Reset, New Orleans alt-rock outfit Mutemathis getting back to the essentials with their newly released fourth studio album, Vitals. We checked in with Paul Meany to talk the music ahead of their House of Blues date in town. aXis: With more than a decade of recording and touring, you guys are now considered veterans... how do you keep the music making process fresh? Paul Meany: We just emptied the tank. We needed some new energy. And it’s not like we consciously set out to do something opposite of our past material. But as it turns out, this album seems more connected to our old stuff, to our first EP. aXis: It’s been almost 4 years since the last recording, why the break? Meany: We needed to get away from the studio and everything. We’ve been a band for over 10 years and it was good to step away and then make the right record. aXis: What does the future hold for the band in their second decade? Meany: There’s part of you that wants to play Madison Square Garden or Red Rocks. It would be wonderful. But at the end of the day, you’re just following your intuition. We’re not that methodical as a band. And it’s probably why we’re not with Warner Bros. anymore. It’s a tricky balance when you can’t project to business partners, such as record labels, that you’re not commercially minded. But it’s not what moves us. You have to follow what moves you, and for us it’s a passion for music and playing music with each other.
