JJ GREY & MOFRO The House of Blues Wed, Dec 31st HouseofBlues.com / @HOBOrlando
From the days of playing greasy local juke joints to headlining major festivals, JJ Grey remains an unfettered, blissful performer, singing like a blue-collar angel over the bone-deep grooves of his compositions. His presence before an audience is something startling and immediate, at times a funk rave-up, other times a sort of mass-absolution for the mortal weaknesses that make him and his audience human. JJ’s a complete believer in the journey he’s embarked on; a real southern gentleman with enough talent to fill concert halls clear across the planet. Amidst a restless tour in support of his latest gem, ‘Ol Glory. JJ Grey reflects on a mischievous childhood, the trials of making it as a musician, and imparted sage words of wisdom to young bands trying to get ahead. aXis: Congrats on Ol’ Glory and another successful tour. You feel you’ve become one of the artists that people appreciate everytime out, and not just for a new song? JJ Grey: Well, really, I don’t notice it. It’s just been one little bit, one piece at a time. Everyday, you get up and go do something, you do your job. I’m glad people dig it, but it’s just been a slow steady thing I never really thought anything about, honeslty. To be honest with you, it’s been like you were do something else, you know, working out or something that takes a long time to do, you don’t even notice it. You just kinda do what you do and forget about it. aXis: At what age did you first find the Blues? JJ: I’ve been doing that kind of stuff my whole life. When we were kids we weren’t allowed to listen to that kind of music. Daddy had an 8-track played he’d let us listen to sometimes. But where I grew up, kids weren’t allowed to listen to that type of music, you had to sneak around to listen to it. Then the Isley Brothers record came out, they did all those tracks and at the time got really famous. They used to have rodeos at the end of my parents street, which was 3 and half miles from our house, they used to have southern rock bands come and play. We could ride our bikes down there and go see stuff like that. So there was a mixture of all that, all the time. aXis: Just sneaking out and indulging when you can! JJ: Exactly, it was one of those things where you weren’t supposed to listen to it, but I never got my behind beat over it. I never got in trouble over it. [laughs] Kids could do what they wanted Saturday night but come Sunday you gotta be in church, one of those kind of deals. aXis: You’ve become that veteran of the scene, any advice to younger artists looking to develop their music for the long haul? JJ: Just go play. I mean go play and let that do the talking. It’s all one foot in front of the other. If you don’t enjoy the ride then you’ll never know it even happened. So my advice to somebody young who wants to do it is you better really want to do it. You’ll go and you’ll play and sing and some people will like it and some people won’t. But no matter what you’ll be doing the right thing, and you can’t go wrong no matter what. I’ve been asked a billion times in my life by young people, “How do you get all these gigs?” I finally started telling them my daddy is rich and he bought and paid for it all. No one wants hear that you’ve got to have enough fire to do it where you sleep on the floor for 2 hours a night for four years and eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. And that’s for anything, the fire, if you want to be a printer, you know, if you want to write books. Anything in life you’ve got to start, well, you’ve got to start nowhere.
Last Call for Christmas with a Crafty Holidaze! ’Tis the Season for Great Winter Brews... Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale
First introduced in the winter of 1981, remains one of the most sought-after releases. This brew uses the first fresh hops of the growing season to create a complex and robust IPA. Layered pine and citrus hop aromas balance against rich malt sweetness to create an uncommonly smooth wintertime ale. ABV 6.8% Food Pairings: Strong spicy foods!!
Abita Christmas Ale
Generally, this beer is a dark ale, however, the recipe changes each year, offering a unique product crafted with special care. Enjoy your holidays with Abita Christmas Ale. The spicy character is excellent with traditional holiday foods such as gingerbread or spiced nuts. Try some Blue cheese or a creamy Camembert with a Christmas Ale . ABV: 6.13%
Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout
This is the famous Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, the award-winning rendition of the imperial Stout style, once made exclusively for Catherine the Great. Three mashes are used to brew each batch to achieve a luscious deep dark chocolate flavor through a blend of specially roasted malts.
Anchor Steam® Christmas Ale
The Ale’s recipe is different every year— as is the tree on the label—but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. Since ancient times, trees have symbolized the winter solstice when the earth, with its seasons, appears born anew. Our tree for 2010 is the Ginkgo biloba tree.
Rogue Yellow Snow IPA
Yellow Snow IPA was originally introduced for the 2000 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. A big hop flavor up front complemented by medium body and hoppyness mid-pallet. Finishes with a characteristic lingering bitterness. Food Pairing: Beef, Hot & Spicy . Tasting Notes: Pale golden in color with a hoppy fruity aroma.
Harpoon Winter Warmer
A full-bodied rich ale that uses a touch of cinnamon and nutmeg to achieve its spirited flavor. Winter Warmer, Harpoon’s first seasonal beer, was introduced in 1988. ABV 5.5% Food Pairing: Savory hors d’oerves, duck, apple and pumpkin pie.
Dogfish Head Chicory Stout
A dark beer made with a touch of roasted chicory, organic Mexican coffee, St. John’s wort, and licorice root. Brewed with whole –leaf Cascade and Fuggles hops, the grains include pale, roasted, and oatmeal. ABV 5.2% Food Pairing: Grilled chicken, BBQ, shellfish, sushi, smoked fish and yes…..chocolate!!
Samuel Adams Winter Lager
Bold and rich, with a touch of holiday spice. The magical aroma which promises something special on the tongue. The cinnamon, ginger, and hint of citrus from the orange peel blend with the roasty sweetness of the malts to deliver a warming, spicy flavor. On the palate Samuel Adams Winter Lager is rich and full bodied, robust and warming, a wonderful way to enjoy the cold evenings that come with the season.ABV: 5.8%

SUNDAY KNIGHTS FOOTBALL The Names That Put the Black & Gold On the Map
UCF 1995-98
Daunte Culpepper QUARTERBACK | MINNESOTA VIKINGS
Although many active Knights are making noise on every given Sunday, these former Knights paved the way and established the brand to a national audience while gathering hardware for their individual accomplishments on both sides of the ball, and a nice collection of Division, Conference and Super Bowl titles. This list is far from complete, so feel free to offer your opinion as UCF Nation continues to prove its worth at the next level, and of course the glaring omission of BMarsh from the list is due to his active status, but is actively working his way onto this list.
UCF 1999-02 @pick_six22
Asante Samuels
UCF 2001-04
Shawn Jefferson WIDE RECIEVER | CHARGERS / PATRIOTS
Jefferson was an old school Knight and a member of the first dynamic duo at Wide Receiver U, pairing with Sean Beckton to dominate D1-AA in the early ’90s. He claims the title of first Knight to participate in a Super Bowl, with the Chargers, before leading the Patriots deep into the playoffs annually. Following his pro career, and UCF Hall of Fame induction, Jefferson decided to pass along his knowledge from the sideline, currently as a wide receiver coach with the Tennessee Titans.
Atari Bigby DEFENSIVE BACK | GREEN BAY PACKERS
DEFENSIVE BACK | EAGLES / PATRIOTS
Asante is a straight baller. He was drafted by the Patriots in the 4th round of the 2003 draft and thrived in Belechick’s defense. He always seemed to make the big play in big games, seemingly appearing from nowhere to alter the momentum in major moments. He was All-MAC his senior year at UCF and always had a nose for the ball, while also producing big hits on opposing receivers. The envy of all DB’s, in ‘08 he signed a $56 million deal!
UCF 1988-90
Generations from now revisionists will champion Blake Bortles the groundbreaking leader of UCF Nation, with his unparalleled Fiesta Bowl run of 2012. Giving all due to Bortles, and he may have an incredible NFL career as well, but Culpepper not only created a foundation for UCF Football, he broke through the ceiling of what was thought possible of the fledgeling transition to a legitimate D-1 contender. Drafted in the mid 1st round, he put the Black & Gold on the map for many years by demonstrating to the NFL a new prototype behind Center, while leading the Minnesota Vikings to the NFC Championship game, with a career year of 4700 Yards Passing, 400 Yards Rushing and 39 TDs, long before the NFL began opening up the offensive schemes.
A rare blue chip find from Jamaica, Bigby made his way to the mainland, becoming a stand out safety for UCF. Undrafted in 2005, he caught on with the Packers and starred in in Pack secondary during their peak playoff years. The rumor is that Bigby is still bitter to old George made him cut his dreadlocks. A proud Rastafarian, and Knight, was known to introduce himself from University of Jah Rastifari on Sunday Night Football. We have no idea how he was passing the league’s testing system!
UCF 1991-94
Mike Gruttadauria CENTER | ST LOUIS RAMS / CARDINALS
Mike was a four year starter for the Knights and widely considered the greatest UCF center of all time. Following his early round draft to the Dallas Cowboys, Gruttadauria moved to the Rams, collecting a Super Bowl ring in 2000, protecting Kurt Warner, Marshall Faulk and the greatest show on turf! Mike bleeds Black & Gold and has contributed his knowledgable voice to the UCF airwaves the past few years.

Another year has come and go for us residents of the City Beautiful, and we’re all a little older, wise and, at least in my case, handsomer than we were at this time last year. As always, I like to use this chance to mention the things that I’ve been most grateful for this year, as there’s so much to be thankful for in Orlando. In fact, that’s why I always write this to the tune of “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” because that song is so freaking outdated and I have never met a single person whose true love gave him two turtle doves. Do you know what would happen if my wife (Borat voice) gave me two turtle doves? “Sorry honey, they must have flown out the back door while I was cleaning the bird shit out of their cage.” And eight maids-a-milking? Unless it’s a membership to maidsmilking.com, I have a really hard time believing that’s a gift. But this is less about criticizing an English Christmas carol and more about stealing the tune made famous by composer Frederic Austin so I can sing the following beautiful song to the people and businesses of Orlando that I love so much. If you didn’t make it this time, it’s probably because you had very little to do with making me fatter.Try harder. Now, a one, a two, a one-two-three…
