03. Wednesday Night Pitcher Show Presents:
#3 01. B.B. King with Kaleigh Baker
HARD ROCK LIVE 6050 Universal Boulevard 407.351.LIVE Sun, January 1, 8pm, $35+ Throughout the 1990’s as well as the 1980’s, 1970’s, 1960’s and 1950’s, there has been only one King of the Blues - Riley B. King, affectionately known as B.B. King. Since B.B. started recording in the late 1940’s, he has released over 60 albums many of them considered blues classics, like 1965’s definitive live blues album “Live At The Regal”, and 1976’s collaboration with Bobby “Blue” Bland, “Together For The First Time”. Over the years, B.B. has had two number one R & B hits, 1951’s “Three O’Clock Blues”, and 1952’s “You Don’t Know Me”, and four number two R & B hits, 1953’s “Please Love Me”, and 1954’s “You Upset Me Baby”, 1960’s “Sweet Sixteen, Part I”, and 1966’s “Don’t Answer The Door, Part I”. B.B.’s most popular crossover hit, 1970’s “The Thrill Is Gone” went to #15 pop. But B.B. King, as well as the entire blues genre, is not radio oriented. His classic songs such as “Payin’ The Cost To Be The Boss”, “Caldonia”, “ How Blue Can You Get”, “Everyday I Have The Blues”, and “Why I Sing The Blues”, are concert (and fan) staples.
Wayne’s World THE ENZIAN 1300 S. Orlando Ave. 407.629.0054 Wed, January 4, 8pm, free Take a pitcher, it lasts longer, and some munchies at Eden Bar and enjoy a FREE outdoor movie on the lawn at Enzian. Come thirsty for Jell-o shot movie trivia during the show – answer a question correctly and you get to pop back a shot! Also featuring a special evening happy hour from 7PM -11PM, this night of great drinks and fun flicks is best enjoyed under the stars with your buddies by your side. Wayne is still living at home. He has a world class collection of name tags from jobs he’s tried, but he does have his own public access TV show. A local station decides to hire him and his sidekick, Garth, to do their show professionally and Wayne & Garth find that it is no longer the same. Wayne falls for a bass guitarist and uses his and Garth’s Video contacts to help her career along, knowing that Ben Oliver, the sleazy advertising guy who is ruining their show will probably take her away from him if they fail.

02. Songwriter’s Stage 3:
An Open Mic Competition for Singer-Songwriters DOWNTOWN CREDO 706 W. Smith St. 407.371.2925 Mon, January 2, 7pm – 10pm Credo conduit hopes to facilitate community amongst songwriters of Central Florida. There’s a lot of talent in this city and we want to help showcase it and help individuals grow as artists. We hope these nights will motivate and inspire people who have written songs or who have always wanted to try. The first Monday night for the next four months, Credo is going to host a new kind of open mic night as a forum for aspiring performing songwriters of all levels of ability. The evenings will be hosted by Kyle Jackson. But this is no normal open mic! Performers have ten minutes each to make Credo stage their own. Each act performs two original songs, and a panel of judges chooses three finalists. These three are invited back to the stage at the end of the night to perform one more song, and the judges select one winner (cash prize included!). Performers are judged in five different areas: songwriting, vocal performance, playing ability, stage presence, and audience response.

10. Galactic and Toubab Krewe PLAZA LIVE 425 N. Bumby Ave. 407.228.1220 Fri, January 6, 8pm, $25.75+ Galactic is a collaborative band with a unique format. It’s a stable quintet that plays together with high musicianship. They’ve been together so long they’re telepathic. But though the band hasn’t had a lead singer for years, neither is it purely an instrumental group. GALACTIC is part of a diverse community of musicians, and in their own studio, with Mercurio and Ellman producing, they have the luxury of experimenting. So on their albums, they do something that’s unusual in rock but not so controversial an idea in, say, hiphop: they create something that’s a little like a revue, a virtual show featuring different vocalists (mostly from New Orleans) and instrumental soloists each taking their turn on stage in the GALACTIC sound universe.

PARLIAMENT HOUSE 410 N. Orange Blossom Trail 407.425.7571 Every Saturday in January, 7:30pm, $15 - $17 Join us for the crowning of the 2nd Annual Little Miss Parliament House. World famous toddler pageant creator Lionel Del Frisco is your host for America’s most heavily pre-screened and rehearsed “Little Miss” pageant in existence. As Mr. Del Frisco says about everything h...e does “Perfection is my middle name”. Please note, Little Miss Parliament is NOT a real pageant. The 7 year old girls will be played by grown men. This show is simply an example of what it would be like if everything that could possibly go wrong at a toddler pageant, actually did go horrifically wrong. Orlando comedian and playwright Jeff Jones plays overly obsessive pageant owner and emcee Lionel Del Frisco who runs Little Miss Parliament House, Inc with his business partner and stage manager, Douglas White. The rotating case of contestants and their mothers will be portrayed by Carol Lee, Doug Ba’aser, Gidget Galore, April Fresh, Addison Taylor, Chantel Reshae, Ginger Minj & Miss Sammy. The contestant line up will be different each week, so it’s never the same show twice. Even the winner will be crowned by judges selected from the audience each night. Expect the unexpected when everything runs awry on stage and backstage in the attempt to decide who will be the next LITTLE MISS PARLIAMENT HOUSE. Show opens January 7 and runs every Saturday night through the month of January. Disclaimer: No actual toddlers will be harmed at any of the performances of Little Miss Parliament House.

Born out of a university art-rock collective,The Bright Light Social Hour has evolved into an unabashedly wide-screen rock group, melding fists-up rock and roll with muscular funk, soul, and psychedelia. The band recently swept the 29th Annual Austin Music Awards during SXSW 2011 with an unprecedented 6 wins, including Band of the Year, Album of the Year and Song of the Year (“Detroit”). The Central Texas-raised young men of The Bright Light Social Hour have built their growing reputation through exhilarating widely-acclaimed live shows, including the 2009 Austin City Limits Festival. In culmination of their studied development, the band released their debut full-length album in late 2010, simply titled “The Bright Light Social Hour”. Recorded in five studios around Austin during summer 2010, the album is founded on sun-drenched optimism, raucous youth, and an innovative brew of American music of varying types - hard rock and roll, indie, rhythm and blues, dance and soul. Producer Danny Reisch of Good Danny’s utilized the best elements of vintage and modern recording to achieve a sound both forward-looking and evocative of 1970s hi-fi.

JANUARY 2012
D12 in New Jersey? Brooklyn? What is this Russia? I made a number of resolutions for 2012, but most of them involve restraining my desire to be nude in public and completing my dream for a Homeless Football League, so I won’t bore you with those details. Instead, we’ll talk once again about our Orlando Magic and my promise to be nicer to them and more optimistic about the team’s future once Dwight Howard figures out what the hell it is that he wants for his career. For starters, he said that he would like to be traded to New Jersey to play for the eventual Brooklyn Nets alongside his BFF Deron Williams and with Kim Kardashian’s mouth-breathing exhusband Kris Humphries. I think this is a colossal mistake for D12, as I watched the Magic play the Nets recently and even a child could see that the Nets are a long, long ways away from being a contender, even with Dwight and Deron running the show. But instead of pointing out the obvious, I’ll give Dwight and you wonderful readers 10 great reasons why playing for the Nets would be a disastrous decision.

6) On a basketball level, the Nets will always be the Clippers to the Knicks’ Lakers. Forget the big new arena – which will probably be built with a ton of asbestos – and the allure of a team in Brooklyn led by two All-Stars. New York City will still belong to Carmelo Anthony, Amar’e Stoudamire and the New York Knicks. And Spike Lee will hate you and call you names like Slight Howard, because he’s not funny like I am. 5) Even worse than playing second fiddle to the Knicks, you’re going to always going to be compared to the New York Mets, which is like your friend telling you that your new girlfriend reminds you a lot of Kirstie Alley. You might as well start drinking mayonnaise smoothies now.

4) Kate Upton is already dating Mark Sanchez. After her, there are like no quality girls in New York. You’d have to date Kenan Thompson in a wig, and even then you’d never laugh. Not once. 3) Speaking of the New York Jets, you have massive feet, so you’re going to be getting calls at all hours of the day from Rex Ryan asking if he can get an autographed pair of your shoes. But he doesn’t want them for the value; he wants them so he can act out his crazy fat guy fantasies on them. 2) In Orlando, you only have to deal with rude foreign people if you go out near the Disney area. In New York, they’re EVERYWHERE. Imagine all those Asian people coming up to you and asking for your picture because you’re so tall. It’s going to be very annoying.

10) The Nets are owned by Mikhail Prokhorov, who may seem like just your average Russian billionaire who got wealthy by hoarding all of his country’s oil reserves, but he’s also allegedly quite the mafia man. Look, I’m already uncomfortable talking about this, because I’m meaningless and insignificant to a guy like Mikhail. But you? You think he’s going to let you off with a slap on the wrist for all those missed free throws? Trust me, he’ll find cement shoes in your size. 9) The Nets’ minority owner is, of course, rapper and vodka mogul Jay-Z, who I’m sure you’ve met and have discussed collaborating with on a Kidz Bop rap album. But he has a kid on the way and that’s going to take up a serious chunk of his time. He won’t be there to defend the team when the Nets are losing by 40 to the Knicks because everyone knows to lock down you and Deron. 8) Dude, have you met Kris Humphries? The guy looks like he’s fascinated by tin foil. I guarantee that he’ll introduce himself to you at least 10 times the first day and then the rest of the time he’ll try to tell you all about the one that got away, when all you need to know is she has a huge ass and got famous by sleeping with Brandy’s brother. 7) A few weeks ago, people started a rumor that Bon Jovi was dead, when he was perfectly fine. That’s what people in New Jersey do when they’re disappointed with someone, they pretend that the person is dead so they’re used to the idea when the Russian mob finally arrives.
1) Orlando may have its share of bums, but New York has the stabby, give-you-AIDSy bums. Those are the worst kind, buddy. Let Ashley Burns know what you think at Ashleyburns@live.com

aXis Magazine is excited to introduce you to Chanelle Mayer, Corona’s Hottest Bartender in Orlando! Along with serving the cold Corona’s at Knight Library, but she also is doing her part to create awareness for environment, while creating some great campus events... all this while still finding time to study! aXis: Along with being a full time student with a major in International Studies and minor in Environmental Studies, and in Kappa Delta, you are also the VP of Eco Advocates on campus. Tell us a little bit about the campus group? Chanelle: E.Co is the hub under which all environmental groups and clubs are connected, so that they can better assist each other and make a greater impact. E.Co is open to everyone, not just these organizations and also has several of its own initiatives. Founded just a few years ago, E.Co has propelled environmental awareness and sustainability throughout the campus as well as the community. One of our current premier projects is Greenwaves III, the third annual environmentally-themed music and art festival held on campus to raise environmental awareness. We also organize local river cleanups and beach cleanups, promote sustainable food practices at our on-campus arboretum, are installing solar panels on our campus and have made the first ever UCF Greeks Going Green initiative, a competition to help Sororities and Fraternities green their houses and become more sustainable! These are just a few of the many things E.Co is involved with. I feel honored to be a part of an organization that makes such a difference. aXis: Eco UCF is also responsible for GreenWaves Music Festival, which has produced some great music for a great cause the past two years. What are you goals for Green Waves 2012? Chanelle: Yes, Greenwaves is definitely a great cause! Graham Penniman started Greenwaves in 2009 as an annual campus event that strives to raise awareness on how to incorporate green living and sustainability in everyday life. We expect this year’s Greenwaves III to be one of the biggest events ever hosted at UCF, in many different ways. For one, Greenwaves III is entirely student-run by very progressive, forward thinking, passionate, and motivated individuals- myself, Julian Belilty, Savannah Golden, and Matthew Malerba for PR (among many others who put in many hours of incredible work!)This year we will have several ground breaking clean-energy producing technologies present that have rarely if ever even been used in the United States. There are so many ways to reduce our ecological footprint that are both environmentally and economically beneficial, and we are bringing some of these to UCF! Progress toward smarter and more efficient living while having FUN is what Greenwaves is all about. aXis: What do you have in mind for Greenwaves III talent and activities? Chanelle: Greenwaves III will be held in the UCF arena April 11th. From noon-6 pm, there is an outside day festival which will have multi-genre music artists and different ecoinitiatives such as local organic farmer stands, art stands, and different activities. Starting at 6, it becomes an electro festival (which is different from previous years) with multiple very well known DJs from around the world (hint: our headliner has one of the top songs in the country right now). I’m sorry to say I can’t give anything away yet, however, I can promise you that NO ONE is going to be disappointed. Look forward to one of the most epic events you’ve ever attended, with the best DJs. (For more information, visit UCFGreenwaves. com or email me at VP_External@ecoucf.com). aXis: So, what do you do with all your FREE TIME at UCF? Chanelle: Free time? I’m not sure what that means… I’m very busy, all the time. I care a lot about my grades (I want to go to one of the top 5 grad schools in the country) and I’m obviously very busy with my leadership positions. However, you only live once. If I do have spare time, I try to make the most of it. I love doing outdoor adventurous things, like hangliding, skydiving, etc., traveling everywhere, running, spending time with my amazing best friends and family, and especially my princess German Shepherd, Sammy. aXis: What would you like to be ‘when you grow up’? Chanelle: I would like to either work for the United Nations Energy Council in NYC, or run a sustainability-focused Consulting Firm. aXis: Best night of the week to enjoy a cold Corona at the Knight Library? Chanelle: Either Wednesday or Friday. R!OT Wednesdays because Defep DJs, and Fridays because you can visit me bartending Dungeon mainbar with Reed Leeming! Always a good time. And of course at our aXis January 2012 Cover Party on January 21st!

the Black & Gold Q&A:
Lauren Berger
‘THE INTERN QUEEN’ discusses being an author, public speaker
and of course... an intern! aXis: So you are quickly becoming the face of the the UCF alumni network, tell us a little about your experiences at UCF, educationally and socially that helped you to develop in this field? Lauren: I love UCF. I had a great time there and I’m lucky to continue my relationships from UCF as the co-chair of the UCF Los Angeles Alumni Group alongside, Lauren Gold. While I was at UCF, I participated in several internships (Daily Buzz, Showtime, NBC) and each opportunity helped me learn more about myself and my professional goals. Socially, I made great friends that I still stay in touch with today. In fact, Lauren Gold and I met at UCF while writing the 2AM Girls column for Orlando Style Magazine together! So clearly we were very social :) aXis: You are aptly self-titled the Intern Queen, so you interned for almost everyone in Orlando, and throughout the entertainment field, what were some of your intern highlights? Lauren: The Daily Buzz for sure - Orlando is lucky to have them filming in town. I almost blew up the coffee machine but other than that - I had a great experience. aXis: What were some of the experiences you would like to help students avoid? Lauren: At any internship you must be cautious - research the company ahead of time and do your due diligence. Also, always ask the employer at the end of the interview, “Can you describe a typical day as an intern at your company?” Make sure you know what you are getting yourself into. But most of all - take advantage of Orlando - its a great city with great opportunity. aXis: What are some of the common misconceptions of students looking to just ‘log in their intern hours’ and what would you tell them to focus on instead of just meeting requirements? Lauren: Don’t just get an internship, learn to make the most of it - my book can help! A solid intern is always thinking, “what could I be doing to make the most of this opportunity?” A few tips - read everything you can get your hands on, always ask if you can help other executives in the office when you have nothing to do, never let yourself be the intern sitting in the corner with nothing to do, get up and take initiative. aXis: Do you have a list of criteria a student should try to meet in order to potentially land a job at a location that they interned for? Lauren: I don’t like putting pressure on students to land a job at the company where they interned. Instead, put the focus on networking at your internship and staying in touch with your contacts after the internship. Students should stay in touch with professional contacts 3 times per year via email. This will help them best leverage the relationships so that when they are ready to enter the workforce, they can re-connect. aXis: What if they don’t want to work at their internship location, but want to use it to help find work elsewhere? Lauren: Its all about networking. Meet people. Build solid relationships. Tap into their personal and professional networks. Always ask for advice. aXis: New book ‘All Work, No Pay’, how does it expand on your speaking presentations and other work you have already put out? Lauren: My book brings everything full circle for the reader. During my Intern Queen speaking engagements, students get 45 minutes of non-stop Intern Queen. In my book, they get even more! I tried to pack the book with as many “call to action” tips as possible so as soon as the reader is done they can get to work! The book really takes a close look at how to find an internship, land an internship, and make the most of the experience. aXis: What is the best piece of advice you ever got from an intern boss? Worse piece of advice? Lauren: Hmm... best piece of advice was to never hesitate in a job interview. If you are interviewing for something you want - tell the employer that you don’t have to think about it - you would start that very second if possible. Worst piece of advice....I really can’t think of anything....(thats probably a good thing!)

JANUARY 2012 5 Questions to Ask Your Future Roommate It’s all smiles when you communicate openly. It’s back-to-school season and that should mean you’ve figured out your living situation for next year. Regardless of where you’re living – be it in a 10X10 cell in the dorms or a dingy old apartment off campus – or who you’re living with, now’s the time to set ground rules and figure out how to make your living situation work for the school year. I’ve had a lot of roommates – nine in four years to be exact. I’ve also had varying degrees of success with roommates, and the common factor that determines whether things are good or bad in all situations is the level of communication. If you communicate early on about what you want your living situation to look like, it will make things easier in the long run, guaranteed. To help you start the conversation with your roommate, here is a list of questions you should be sure to ask. Will it be weird to bring these up with the stranger assigned to you by the school? Maybe, but 3 months from now, you’ll be glad you had the awkward convo.
4. How often do you study? What environment do you like when you study? Music on/off? Complete silence? What time of day? In the room or in the library? These are all ways to gauge your roomie’s study habits, and it’s important to know what works best and how it will fit in with your preferred study regimen. You’re in college to learn, after all.

The Slob
If you’ve ever lived with a clean freak, the slob might seem like a welcome change. But only for a day or two. This guy leaves his laundry in piles all over the floor, doesn’t do his dishes, refuses to take out the trash and never helps clean the place. Oh, and he seems to have an aversion to showering.
MCCULLOH RD
ROUSE RD
The Lurker
The lurker is always in your personal space — hanging out in your room, asking you what you’re doing that night (and if he can come along) and trying to be friends with every friend you bring over. You’ve never seen the lurker leave the house on his own; he may even work from home. You were so happy for your roommate when, two weeks after you moved in together, she met the guy of her dreams. You just didn’t plan on sharing your place with him, too. Now those two are attached at the hip. He eats, sleeps and showers at your place, which of course means you have higher grocery and utility bills and you have to fight one more person for use of the bathroom. You’d really love to talk to your roommate about it and ask whether they can spend some time at his place for a change, but you can’t get a minute alone with her.
The Closet Raider
Your roommate obviously admires your taste in clothing, as she is always taking things out of your closet. You’re not opposed to sharing, but you’re not thrilled to find your favourite blouse or sweater in a heap on the floor after she’s worn it. When you suggest that she ask you before borrowing your clothes, she plays dumb: “Oh, I thought that was my shirt.”

5. What items are you open to sharing? What items do you not like to lend out? Knowing what you can and can’t borrow is key. (Especially after a long day at the ‘brary when all you wanted was that extra slice of pizza from lunch and you come home to find the roommate has eaten it….) Decide if you want to share any food products, or other household items. Also let your roommate know if you are not okay with them borrowing your computer, favorite sweater, boyfriend, etc.
DB
When you first met this roommate, you were thrilled that she seemed to keep the place so neat and tidy. But you’ve quickly learned that there’s no such thing as clean enough in her eyes. If you’re snacking on some chips in the living room, she’s standing by armed with the vacuum to snag any crumbs that may fall. She created an elaborate chore chart the week you moved in, and it includes cleaning tasks you’ve never even heard of. For your birthday, she got you a personalized duster – a not-so-subtle reminder of your least favourite of her assignments.

The Clean Freak
3. How often do you party? Do you drink? How much/often? While how much someone parties can change significantly when they start college, it’s good to get a sense of how much they think they’ll be partying. If one roommate has a class at 8 am on Friday (ew!) and the other has the day off, maybe have guidelines for when they need to be home, or if they need to crash elsewhere if they’re planning on coming in late.
KW
This guy doesn’t have fun — and doesn’t want anyone else to, either. To him, a quiet dinner party with a few friends is a raucous party. And he won’t stand for any of it. As far as he’s concerned, quiet hours are around the clock. Oh, and forget about watching TV or listening to some tunes. The guy has supersonic hearing, so if the volume is loud enough for you to hear it, it’s disturbing his peace and quiet.
2. Do you smoke – cigarettes or otherwise? Most residences try to keep smokers and non-smokers apart. If you are a non-smoker living with a smoker, try and set up a designated smoke area outside, and have rules about cigarette butts. Finding out if your roommates do drugs is also important, as you should make them aware if you are not comfortable having them use (or bring their shady lady friends over) in your place of residence.
LO C
The Party Pooper
1. What’s your stance on overnight guests? This question can refer to both friends visiting and people you are hooking up with. Figuring out your policy on this question is probably one of the most important. You’ll want to figure out how often people can stay, if it’s okay if anyone stays over on a school night, and, if you share a bedroom, what the roommate is supposed to do. I don’t think I need to tell you this, but it is NOT okay to hook up while the other person is sleeping in the same room, even if they’re passed out.
N. ALAFAYA TRAIL
The party animal is a social butterfly, and all of that socializing seems to take place in your home, at full volume. She has dozens of friends who have all decided that your place is the place to be. They have parties every weekend — and even some weeknights. Of course, you’re always invited to join in on the fun, but while you’re not opposed to having a good time, you also enjoy a good night’s rest.

BREWSOME... KEEPING YOU HIP TO THE hops New Year resolutionary beers with Mahoney of
World of Beer UCF
Terrapin Moo Hoo ...a solid chocolate milk stout to remind you of how much you thought those idiots, drinking banana yoo-hoo, were stupid.
Anchor Brekle’s Brown ...my resolution brew, it’s similar to Newcastle, but American, not English and has better teeth. (by that I mean bite)
Sierra Nevada Torpedo ...finally on draught for the public. Nice hoppy IPA, balanced, and reason why I have a hangover almost every day. It’s my everyday beer, drinking one now while typing...look mom, one hand.
Boulder Mojo IPA
...citrus-y IPA, nice hop bite, smooth, and a man’s IPA. But most chicks dig this one. Floral, pink grapefruit and a slight earthy nose.
Toasted Coconut Porter
...it’s from Tom, our local beer guru, and it is finally bottled. Get some of this to bring the beach to our 4 weeks of hard Florida winter.
Bottles of water (i.e. Low-calorie beers)
... If you drink this stuff because you like it or want to lose weight, you are retarded. Beer is for the “I am proud, I love life” people who want to chill out and hang out. If you don’t...go order a chocolate martini, you glutton. Otherwise, support craft beer or get a bottle of Zephyr Hills on the rocks.
