2 THE COATHANGERS WILL’S PUB 1042 N. MILLS AVENUE 407.748.8256/ WILLSPUB.ORG WED, JULY 2, 10PM, $10, 18+
If you’re familiar with The Coathangers then you probably know the Atlanta group’s premise. The story goes that four young women decided to start a band for the sole purpose of being able to hang out and play parties. They weren’t going to let the fact that none of them knew how to play any instruments get in the way of their having a good time. The backstory certainly added to the charm of early songs like “Nestle In My Boobies” and “Stop Stomp Stompin’”--songs that resided somewhere between nowave’s caustic stabs of dissonance and garage rock’s primal minimalism. In the seven years since their formation, The Coathangers have released a slew of records and toured across North America and Europe countless times. The persistence of such a casual endeavor is a testament to the infectious quality of their songs and the electric nature of their unruly live show.

As these two worlds clash together, everyone in the almost 1,700-seat theatre is kept in laughter and on the edge of their seat for the entire performance wondering what spectacle might happen next!

AND ENJOY THE SUMMER SUN! (cont) Turning heads with his trapped-out blend of hip-hop and EDM, Brillz’s interest in music stems from his history in the dance music scene. Introduced through the dance itself, Brillz was a founding member of a dance crew called Liquid Pop Collective before producing and DJing. The group would hold events on the East Coast, merging the dance styles of funk and hip-hop with the rave culture dance “Liquid”. As he progressed into production, these themes would carry through as a foundation of Brillz’s aesthetic.
16 DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES RELEASED FRI, JULY 11
A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species. - Written by Twentieth Century Fox
leaving high school, he went on to work in shoe factory in Maine, before being inspired to write music by listening to a record by Stephen Stills, Manassas. His rootsy, bluegrass style has been likened to Otis Redding and Van Morrison, among others, with a gravelly, but velvety folk voice that dances expertly around earthy songs.

Artist Dae’s latest series tells the story of exposing beauty in oddities. Each portrait reflects themes we consider insecurities in our lives, portrayed as sideshow freaks. The exposure to these characters forces us to live with our vices as if they’re real, beautiful creatures on display. The world is too intricate to hide the beauty in your problems. Showcase them!!! Tiffany Dae is a surrealist artist born in Hawaii to migrant parents from Cuba and India. Dae studied briefly in Paris and received her degree in art from Florida State University, with concentration in painting. Since then she’s shown across the Southeast and currently has a studio in Miami, Florida where she’s touring her current series Show and Tell. Her process takes that mundane everyday noise and transforms it into something beautiful that stands out and reaches us. She’ll process hours of media, compiling as many stills and images as she can digitally into collages, which I transform into beautiful, whimsical — and sometimes satirical — pieces.

40 HOUSE MUSIC LEGEND DERRICK CARTER THE SOCIAL 54 N. ORANGE AVE 407.246.1419/ THESOCIAL.ORG FRI, JULY 25, 10PM, $15 - $25, 18+
Derrick Carter is widely acknowledged as one of the best DJs in the world. With innovative productions, flawless technical skills and an effortlessly joyful attitude of rocking a crowd, his influence has infiltrated throughout the spectrum of dance music. Although known as one of the key players of Chicago’s house music wave in the ’90s, Derrick Carter began DJ’ing at the age of nine, spinning disco records at family reunions. Raised in the western suburbs, Derrick was into music from a young age; during his teens Chicago’s house scene sucked him in for good and before long he became a strong presence in the city’s underground dance scene. “When I got my driver’s license at 16 my sneak ability was validated,” he laughs. “I was a fierce bedroom jock for a long time. After you mix for the love of it for six or seven years, you get it pretty tight and you can take it on the road.” He got by working at dance-music specialty stores like Gramaphone and gigging at parties, later landing regular DJ stints at Shelter, Foxy’s, and Smart Bar; though he doesn’t often spin locally, his unannounced appearances at friends’ parties leave people queuing around the block. Derrick’s sets are rooted in house, but he freely travels outside conformative club tastes, seamlessly incorporating old-school disco, soul, jazz, and whatever else catches his fancy to jack the beat and rock the party.

GUIDE TO WARPED TOUR

#VANSWARPEDTOUR #WARPEDFORNEWBIES #VANSWARPED2014 #PACIFICOBEER
GENERATION WARPED Punk Rock Parents & Children Welcome! It’s safe to say that when Less Than Jake first skanked up bars from Gville to Otown and back, (insert parent or child’s name here) had less to worry about. You were either studying Botany at UF and indulging in Gainesville Green while killing Nickel Beer Night at the Purple Porpoise, or you weren’t even born yet. Or Nickel Beer Night was somehow responsible for you being born. Either way, LTJ is back on the Warped circuit this year, along with other Millenial/Gen X local tweeners Yellowcard and Anberlin. So, rather than tell you to properly hydrate the old man, we’re going to help you get 2for1 tix and knockout Mother/Father’s Day gifts for next year.
OFFSPRING
ELDERS Warped offers one complimentary parent admission to accompany a minor (under 18) that has purchased a ticket to a 2014 Warped Tour show. Babysitting your nephew may not have been part of your weekend plans, but it may get you a free ticket. We think this scenario may have been described in “The Science of Selling Yourself Short.” Pack accordingly. Forget the sunblock this won’t help you at your age, besides you’ve probably already been to the dermatologist for your annual plucking. You’re looking for wide brim, don’t worry about making a fashion statement. We could joke about Metamucil here, but in all reality it doesn’t mix well with Vodka. So we would suggest a steady flow of Red Bull Vodkas in order to stay awake, and the necessary hydration, in the form of Pacifico Beer. Reverse DayCare offers an air-conditioned chill zone for all parents, and old people like you that snuck in, and look beet red. Lots of familyfriendly activities and cold beverages available. Only catch, last call for the tent is 6pm, then your booted out into the real world of sweaty punks ready to prove that the Millenial’s are in fact a motivated generation.
TICKETS
Guardians accompanying minors to the show must be legal guardians over the age of 28. Begin discussions with your real parents on which one of your older brothers can pass for their ID? Cool uncles are usually good for this as well.
GEAR
Invest in one of those child leashes, and convince the adult that you want to stay close in case of any random mobile moshpit action. Once entering, promptly walk them to the closest Parent Tent and then tie them to the bar, and let them know it is for the best.
DRINK CHILL
Leave the energy drinks to the ’rents and go moshing au natural. Stay hydrated with the Hydration Stations, unless your parent got seriously busy as Freshmen at their first LTJ show, and was already touting around you in a backpack in ‘95, then you’re old enough for Pacifico. Along with the Hydration Station, stop by any of the designated shade areas, Misting Stations and the official Slip and Slide. Dress accordingly though, so that you don’t end up being the Instagram sensation of the tour stop.
“Our crowd now is 16 to 40, and I’ve met kids as young as eight or nine. Dads bring their sons and it’s a weird rite of passage; moms bring kids in saying, ‘We’ve watched you guys for 15 years.’” Less Than Jake’s Vinnie Fiorello

WHO: An Extreme Coaster Summer WHAT: A Tour De G-force of the nastiest coasters WHERE: Universal Studios/ Islands of Adventure / Sea World INFO:
The Hulk You accelerate from zero to 40 mph in two seconds flat, with the force equal to that of a jet taking off an aircraft carrier. The world turns upside down as you experience a weightless “zero g” roll. Then you feel a surge in power as you pick up speed and a menacing roar fills your ears. All you can do is hang on as you experience the rage, power and fury of the Hulk Revenge of the Mummy Walt Disney World’s Space Mountain isn’t the only fully-enclosed rollercoaster in Florida and it isn’t the most exciting; that title belongs to Universal Studios’ Revenge of the Mummy, a high-speed hi-tech haunted-house ride. Spoiling too many of the Mummy’s surprises would be boorish, but know that there is more than one electromagnetic blast; an assortment of nasty, rotting, vengeful mummies; an admirable amount of real fire; and one of the best finales. Kraken SeaWorld Florida joined the thrill-ride heavyweight division with Kraken, a “floorless” coaster that tosses you through seven inversions with its “flying chair” trains at up to 65mph. Kraken also has some lush designed surroundings. During the last half of the run, you dash over pools of water and through a sea monster’s rocky lair. Be sure to also check out the little eel exhibit. Manta Added in 2009, this is Florida’s first and only “flying” coaster, another variant of the tracks-above, train-below formula. In this case you are manoeuvred into a prone position, facing the ground, before take-off. While not as inversion-packed as Kraken, Manta has a signature “Pretzel Loop”, subjecting riders to strong G-forces. The physical presence of Manta offers passengers a “wing dip”, with an edge of a train appearing to skim the surface of a pond, kicking up a splashy plume.

The Dirty Heads / Pepper / Aer Beacham Thur, July 31st Beacham.com / @TheBeacham
aXis welcomes back hometown, by way of SoCal, surf/ska favorites The Dirty Heads. We had a few minutes with Jared ‘Dirty J’ Watson to talk about their studio work and the live stage they’re about to blow up at The Beacham this month. aXis: Your album titles have created a storyline for many of us beach bums, please enlighten? Dirty J: The title Home – Phantoms of Summer completes the thematic cycle of our first three EP’s and albums. The first was Sails to the Wind, where we were just getting started and taking off, followed by Any Port in a Storm which was us trying to find ourselves sonically and as a band. Cabin By the Sea was a paradise we found and built after the storm. Now we have left that cabin and we are returning home to where we started, as an acoustic act. Phantoms of Summer sums up these songs and this album, which was recorded over the summer, as well as the fact we are never home during summer so WE the Dirty Heads are also the phantoms of summer. aXis: The albums have always been chill, but the most recent went to the bare bones right? Dirty J: We decided to do an acoustic album because we wanted to get back to our roots and really expose our lyrics and voices. Breaking down to acoustic and being raw is very liberating as a songwriter. And the inspiration and vibe of this album is more sexy than anything we’ve done. We really just went for all vibe and feel. aXis: So outside of Southern California, what cities and parts of the country treat you guys the best, and how does Central Florida rank? Dirty J: At the beginning of our career it was kind of just the coasts like west coast we did good, and east coast we did good. There were some spots in the middle like Colorado and some other random spots like Arizona that were really well. But usually it was just kind of closer to the west coast and east coast. But now that we’ve grown and got more fans, I mean it’s hard to choose from east coast to west coast. But Florida has always been a second home for us. We’ve had some of the top ticket sales there. I mean we don’t care about ticket sales, I don’t care if there are 500 people or 2000 people, it just depends on the people that are at the show. But we’ve had some of the biggest shows in Florida for us to date and they’ve always been amazing shows. So it’s really awesome and we’re always really stoked to get down there and the weather is pretty similar to home so it’s always nice to get away from the shitty ass cold.
aXismag.com | july 2014 | p24
aXis: You guys are rolling through town the same week as the Warped Tour. How did a tour like that, and the artists that helped spawn it, affect you guys as a young band? Dirty J: “Well I think kind of Sublime and No Doubt, it’s the combination between Warped Tour and both of those bands. They were very influential and pretty much most people who now listen to that style of music, was because of them. If you talk to people who never heard of reggae or ska but became fans of it, it’s probably got a lot to do with those bands and going to festivals like Warped Tour. I think it had a lot to do with it; it had a lot to do with spreading the whole Southern California vibe with those bands. I think just the Warped Tour is really the only touring festival left. As a band it really makes you change your whole mentality when it comes to live shows and how you deal with people and festivals. It really steps up your chops, everyday you are playing while 50 other bands are playing and people are walking by going to other stages. How are you going to get those people to stay and watch you. You have to think about that, and have the mentality that we are going to put on the best show that we can every day. If you’ve done the Warped Tour in a van, you’ve definitely got chops. And I will definitely respect you no matter what kind of music you play. aXis: How has your relationship with Rome, Bud and Eric of Sublime affected your music in the studio and on the stage? Dirty J: Well, I think Sublime was really the first band that opened our eyes to a style of music where you could join multiple styles. Where you could take a hip hop song and add reggae to it. You could take a reggae song and add a little bit of punk to it, or rock, or whatever. They would mash up so many styles of music that made us realize we could do three of four styles of music in this one album, which was really cool. It was really great as an artist to be able to do that and not to just be stuck making 12 songs that sound exactly the same. With Rome I mean that was just one of the coolest things that could have happened. He came into the studio, didn’t have an album, didn’t have anything. He was super talented and we knew it. We became friends and then we wrote that song and somehow it just blew up and became this smash hit. For everything that happened with Sublime with Rome and ‘Lay Me Down’ it was perfect because we got to go on tour with one of our best friends and have this awesome song. aXis: What were some of the shows you would put on your ‘must see’ list growing up before you made music your career? Dirty J: The crazy thing with me is I didn’t go to any concerts. I didn’t hate them but I was definitely scared of them, like holy social anxiety I don’t like being around that many people that I don’t know. I would freak out. I have probably in my whole life have gone to 10 concerts. But the first concert I went to was Bob Marley that was huge, I just got super stoned and then ended up passing out a couple hours after we got there.

aXis: Let’s get to the point, is it ever tough remembering lyrics when you’re high on stage? TSV: You know what they say.. “practice makes perfect!” We are all pretty heavy smokers so, most likely we wrote the damn song when we were high! I’d say its probably a little tougher for us going up without a little tokey-toke, cause then we are out of our element and we start fucking up all over the place. But, I’m not gonna lie and say I can hold totally hold it together onstage because I’ve forgotten entire days courtesy of the SSV! Since we do happen to smoke all day long, the SSV vapos have allowed us to not change our habits, but create a more resourceful and healthy means to an end. aXis: You guys have shared the stage with a wide spectrum of acts, is it because you’re fun to party with, or they just like your music? TSV: Since our music has the tendency to bounce around alot, it usually leaves a lot of options open as far as tourmates go. We have done a reggae supporting the Wailers, did a ska tour with Reel Big Fish and the English Beat, and in the past were on the Jagermeister MusicTour with punk acts like Pennywise and Authority Zero. The only disadvantage I ever notice is sometimes you get subjected to the teen-angst, anti-music, over-the-top-scream-crying, end of the world emo-core bullshit. I know it sounds cliche to bash the emo kids, but it’s pretty well-deserved.
I know it sounds cliche to bash the emo kids, but it’s pretty well-deserved.
aXis: So until John Morgan legalizes it, how are you guys going to manage on tour? TSV: The different weed laws from state to state and the whole “Border Patrol checkpoint thing” is a pretty big annoyance. Some states say you can possess, some say you just have to pay a fine, some states they don’t play games and they straight-up arrest you and confiscate your vehicle. All the different laws makes it confusing just how paranoid you have to be depending where you are at, and everyday we are somewhere else. Our entire outfit would be 100 percent law-abiding citizens, it weren’t for pot prohibition.. and that annoys me as an American. aXis: We know that The Social is your only true home court, but any other venues around the country or world that you feel right at home? Favorite eats on the road? TSV: I mean, there are so many…just off the top of my head, I’d have to say, some of my favs would be The Catalyst in Santa Cruz, Ca., The Culture Room in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl and The House of Rock in Corpus Christi, Texas. Literally, I could name soooo many more. So many great memories. Although, no doubt, our favorite would have to be The Social. They have been the greatest to us over the years, not to mention the best sounding. Nothing says “Home town Supervillains show” like a social gig. aXis: Greatest inspiration in the music business? TSV: Peter cetera, he is also the love of my life. That’s a Chicago joke. A lot of my inspiration comes from dead musicians which is kinda morbid, One day I hope to be so successful that we all overdose on whatever drug is hip at the time like huffing elephant piss or whatever and die, THAT sounds inspiring! Great, now I jinxed myself.
