aXis How do you find being in a band nowadays compared to when you started? Max Bemis: I think it requires more work, but it always should have required more work. There was a brief period of time around a century long when the music industry got involved and figured out how to cater to the laziness of musicians. And we are innately lazy because we’re artists. There are people who work nine to five jobs thanklessly and don’t complain about it ever, and then there’s musicians, a lot of whom are receiving these giant advances from multiconglomerate companies and essentially getting smoke blown up their ass and they feel like they’re the new Beatles, or at least trying to achieve that. It’s a very enabling process. But it’s also dehumanizing. So I would say it’s a little harder to be in a band logistically, because you have to do things you wouldn’t normally do, you have to tour more, you have to be a musician instead of this actor, and I think that’s great. I love it. So in general, in my life, I feel like it’s easier and more fun. aXis: With ‘Hebrews’ circulated, how would you reflect on the record at this point in time? Max Bemis: Well, I am very proud of it; I am really proud of the reaction we got to it. It was definitely really affirming. This was the first record that I have really took on all of myself, so having it be the first record in a while that has gotten this much attention was great. I was actually so happy with the record to the point where I didn’t care if people liked it, but people did and that was awesome. aXis: On the record we see you move away from using guitars and go towards string instruments and pianos, how did you decide to go down that path? Max Bemis: Yeah, there was no guitars on the record. It was really a fluke. The guy who produced …Is A Real Boy and Anarchy, My Dear (Tim O’Heir) really just made this off the cusp comment about making an orchestral record and that immediately clicked with me. As we got close to thinking about this one, almost immediately I was thinking about doing the record that way, before I had even written songs for the record I was thinking in that frame of mind. I would be writing songs on my guitar but I was thinking about how they would sound with string instruments.
