GONE GREEN

TUES, MA

TY’S DAY //AXIS ANNUAL ST PAT SURVIVAL GUIDE

LET’S MIX IT UP THIS YEAR! So mixology is all the rage? Let’s get a little creative with the Irish American pasttime then. How about these fine flavors using the age old Guinness as the base.

HANGOVER CURES FOR MARCH 18th

WILDE OSCAR

PREPARATION Stir all ingredients in an ice filled mixing glass. Strain cocktail over a large ice cube. This cocktail is also delicious when made with GUINNESS Draught. Garnish with a large orange peel and maraschino cherry. INGREDIENTS - 1.5 oz. Bulleit Bourbon - 1 oz. GUINNESS Extra Stout - 0.5 oz. Rich Simple Syrup - Dash of Botanical Bitters

IRISH SUMMER

PREPARATION Pour both ingredients into a pint glass over large ice cubes. Taste how the fruit flavors of the soda pair perfectly with the dry malty character of SMITHWICK’S beer. For another great match, try an Italian Lemon Soda with HARP Lager. INGREDIENTS - 4 oz. Italian Orange Soda - 8 oz. SMITHWICK’S Irish Ale - GUINNESS BLACK & BLONDE

IRISH HONEY

PREPARATION Add all ingredients to an ice filled shaker. Shake and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with grated dark chocolate. INGREDIENTS - 1 oz. Bushmills Irish Honey Whiskey - 0.5 oz. Crème de Cacao (dark) - 1.5 oz. GUINNESS Draught

The worst part about drinking is most definitely the next day. Hopefully these tricks can help out a little with the headache, and lead to less worshiping of the porcelain God(dess) the next day. - Pickle Juice: The base of the pickle juice should help absorb the alcohol. - Sunlight: Probably the last thing you want to do is head out into the sun. However, the sun’s rays contain a lot of vitamins you’ll need to fight that hangover. - Vitamin C: This is what the alcohol absorbs from your body. Tank up on O.J. - Bread and Water: The best thing here is if you’re sober enough to do it before you crash for the night. Make yourself drink a big glass of water and chow down on some crackers. If you can handle that before you pass out, you’ll cut the hangover effect in HALF in the morning. - H2O: DUH. You’re hungover because you’re dehydrated. Drink water, all day.

REASONS TO CELEBRATE ON MARCH 17th, EVEN IF YOU AREN’T IRISH

1. You start drinking in the morning and no one calls you an alcoholic 2. Irish car bombs are so good! 3. You can kiss every girl in a “Kiss Me I’m Irish” shirt 4. EVERYONE in every bar you crawl to will be just as drunk as you, including the bar staff 5. Getting lucky after many rounds of Guinness 6. March Madness! 7. When else can you drink green beer? 8. Guinness 9. Harp 10. Guinness + Harp!

ST. PATRICK’S DAY MIXTAPE 1. Against Me! “Pints of Guinness Make You Strong” 2. Flogging Molly “Drunken Lullabies” 3. Dropkick Murphys “The Rocky Road To Dublin” 4. Boondock Saint’s Theme Song 5. The Dubliners “Seven Drunken Nights” 6. The Bloody Irish Boys “Streams of Whisky” 7. Tsunami Bomb “Irish Boys” 8. Dropkick Murphys “I’m Shipping Up to Boston” 9. Orlando Firefighters Pipes and Drums “Wearin’ of the Green” 10. The Pogues “Irish Rover”

SOUNDCHECK: LOCAL NOISE

What: Shamrock Fest Carnival & Country Concert featuring John King When: Sunday, March 22nd • 12:00pm to 5:30pm Where: UCF Kappa Delta House • 4303 Greek Park Drive info: Facebook.com/UCFkappadelta The women of Kappa Delta Sorority are holding their first ever Shamrock Fest Carnival & Country Concert! Carnival booths, country music, and food will be set up at the sorority house to raise money for a great cause. Kappa Delta Shamrock events are held nationally to benefit Prevent Child Abuse America, while the local UCF chapter also benefits the Children’s Home Society of Florida. Patty, the sorority’s Vice President of Community Service, shared with us that, “As an organization, we strive each day to live through our values and inspire others. PCCA and the Children’s Home Society are all about empowering individuals to take back control of their lives. Putting together a new philanthropy can be a lot of work, but we couldn’t be more excited to bring something brand new to the community and raise more money and awareness for our cause than ever before!” Presale tickets are $15 each and $20 the day of the event. The featured artist is John King, a country singer and songwriter from Nashville, Georgia. King tours all over the country and played over 240 shows in 44 states last year with big country artists such as Jason Aldean, Florida Georgia Line, and Rascal Flatts. We had a chance to speak with the up and coming country star and asked him a few questions. aXis: How has your newest album been received so far? John: It’s been great. My newest single Tonight, Tonight made the top 40 on the Country Music Charts. It got picked up by the NFL and was used on Thursday Night Football on ABC, so that was really cool. It’s been amazing over the last year to see all the band’s support increase. aXis: Most of the tour is in clubs and on campuses, but a sorority house is unique. Can you tell us about your experiences with Greeks on campus? John: Like you said, it’s a little different that we play at the sorority and fraternity houses and campus events. It’s great because students in college and in their early twenties are our main fan bases. We feel like that’s the demographic that will be out there for a long time supporting us. A lot of the stuff I write, sing, and play about is a lot of what these kids can relate to since we are in a similar part of our lives. aXis: Where do you hope to be a year from now? John: Our new single, On Your Lips, comes out next week and the goal is keep moving further up on the charts. Hopefully by this time next year we will have a big radio hit on our hands. It’s time to step up the game and make the shows bigger and better. I want to always improve as a singer, songwriter, and performer. I think if we do all those things, this year will be the best year yet. aXis: What are some artists that you look up to and pattern your self after? John: Garth brooks. I remember watching him on TV as a little kid and thinking, “Man, he is so cool!” I love the way he has so much energy on stage and most importantly the way he loves his fans and treats them like royalty. That’s what I’ve modeled my career after. I want to make the fans feel like they are first, because this is all for nothing without them. aXis: How did your home roots effect who you’ve become today? John: I’m from Georgia, born and raised. I’m a country boy. Everything I write about and all I know is country. I grew up singing in Church and have a very close family with strong values. I went to the University of Georgia, where I took Music Business and figured out how to launch my career. Country is the best genre hands down. It talks about positive things and almost always has a good message. - Kristin Stevenson

Who: The Supervillains The Crazy Carls Whole Wheat Bread When: Sat, March 7th Where: The Social How: $12-$14 The Florida-bred swamp reggae rockers have been bending genres, partying hard, touring the world, and leaving tales of joy and destruction in their wake.

Who: Survay Says/ The Floridian When: Thur, March 26, 7:00 PM Where: Backbooth How: $8 Survay Says! Is a 6-piece pop punk/ska band from New Jersey. Averaging 150+ shows a year for the past 3 years, Survay Says! Blends horn-driven ska music with a hard hitting and quick, catchy pop punk sound.

Who: Single Mothers/ The Dirt Nil When: Sun, March 29th Where: Backbooth How: $10 Hardcore outfit Single Mothers have been gaining a lot of traction after releasing their debut LP Negative Qualities in October 2014. Shortly after, they played at The Fest in Gainesville, FL and have shown no sign of slowing down since.

Who:

Fossil Youth/ Morris Bridge/ Haily Taylor/ Pinehurst/ Adult

Life When: Tues, March 31st Where: Uncle Lou’s Entertainment Hall Price: $5 Formed in 2011, Fossil Youth originally began as the single minded vision of founding member Scottie Noonan. Over the course of the next year, the band’s sound was reshaped, and eventually, Fossil Youth coalesced into the band it is today. With a newfound lineup and confidence, the band collaborated on new music with a renewed vigor, and began to hit the road in support of the material. FY has spent the last several years honing and perfecting their craft, and are poised to release a batch of new material that will stand on its own, and contend with the formidable musicality of their contemporaries in today’s emo/indie rock scene. Ultimately, Fossil Youth aims to deliver a perfect synthesis of their varied influences, while keeping a sense of youth and originality at the forefront of their refined approach. - Austin Lee
