//AXIS ANNUAL ST PATTY’S DAY SURVIVAL GUIDE

LET’S MIX IT UP THIS YEAR!

So mixology is all the rage? Let’s get a little creative with the Irish American pasttime then. How about these fine flavors using the age old Guinness as the base.

HANGOVER CURES FOR MARCH 18th

WILDE OSCAR

PREPARATION Stir all ingredients in an ice filled mixing glass. Strain cocktail over a large ice cube. This cocktail is also delicious when made with GUINNESS Draught. Garnish with a large orange peel and maraschino cherry. INGREDIENTS - 1.5 oz. Bulleit Bourbon - 1 oz. GUINNESS Extra Stout - 0.5 oz. Rich Simple Syrup - Dash of Botanical Bitters

IRISH SUMMER

PREPARATION Pour both ingredients into a pint glass over large ice cubes. Taste how the fruit flavors of the soda pair perfectly with the dry malty character of SMITHWICK’S beer. For another great match, try an Italian Lemon Soda with HARP Lager. INGREDIENTS - 4 oz. Italian Orange Soda - 8 oz. SMITHWICK’S Irish Ale - GUINNESS BLACK & BLONDE

IRISH HONEY

PREPARATION Add all ingredients to an ice filled shaker. Shake and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with grated dark chocolate. INGREDIENTS - 1 oz. Bushmills Irish Honey Whiskey - 0.5 oz. Crème de Cacao (dark) - 1.5 oz. GUINNESS Draught

The worst part about drinking is most definitely the next day. Hopefully these tricks can help out a little with the headache, and lead to less worshiping of the porcelain God(dess) the next day. - Pickle Juice: The base of the pickle juice should help absorb the alcohol. - Sunlight: Probably the last thing you want to do is head out into the sun. However, the sun’s rays contain a lot of vitamins you’ll need to fight that hangover. - Vitamin C: This is what the alcohol absorbs from your body. Tank up on O.J. - Bread and Water: The best thing here is if you’re sober enough to do it before you crash for the night. Make yourself drink a big glass of water and chow down on some crackers. If you can handle that before you pass out, you’ll cut the hangover effect in HALF in the morning. - H2O: DUH. You’re hungover because you’re dehydrated. Drink water, all day.

REASONS TO CELEBRATE ON MARCH 17th, EVEN IF YOU AREN’T IRISH

1. You start drinking in the morning and no one calls you an alcoholic 2. Irish car bombs are so good! 3. You can kiss every girl in a “Kiss Me I’m Irish” shirt 4. EVERYONE in every bar you crawl to will be just as drunk as you, including the staff 5. Getting lucky after many rounds of Guinness 6. March Madness! 7. When else can you drink green beer? 8. Guinness 9. Harp 10. Guinness + Harp + Blonde + Nitro!

ST. PATRICK’S DAY MIXTAPE 1. Against Me! “Pints of Guinness Make You Strong” 2. Flogging Molly “Drunken Lullabies” 3. Dropkick Murphys “The Rocky Road To Dublin” 4. Boondock Saint’s Theme Song 5. The Dubliners “Seven Drunken Nights” 6. The Bloody Irish Boys “Streams of Whisky” 7. Tsunami Bomb “Irish Boys” 8. Dropkick Murphys “I’m Shipping Up to Boston” 9. Orlando Firefighters Pipes and Drums “Wearin’ of the Green” 10. The Pogues “Irish Rover”

Teddy Venables / Jeremy Martin Rydes Pedicab App | Founders I approached Jeremy Martin and Teddy Venables, two downtown Orlando pedicabbers, at our designated meeting spot - a patio table outside of a local Orlando bar. Jeremy, wearing a Garth Brooks tour t-shirt and sporting long black hair and a possibly longer black beard, has recently launched an app that will connect users with nearby pedicabs. Teddy, also long haired though with much lighter features, sat with his arm draped over an empty chair and one leg trying its best to cover the entire table on which it was resting. He sipped an amber colored liquid from what appeared to be an old maple syrup jar. aXis: Hi guys, thanks for sitting down with me today. Let’s start with the basics just in case anyone doesn’t know. Pedicabbing: how does it work? Teddy: It’s basically a bike hooked up to a trailer with seats. Our trailers hold 4 to 6 people, more if you’re willing to stack on top of each other. Now here’s how a bike works: the rider uses his legs to push down on a “pedal,” which then transfers energy to a chain which is connected to a wheel. The wheel is made of… Jeremy: Alright Ted, I think they get the picture. But if you meant how things work, you know, beyond the physical kinetics, it’s basically like any taxi service. We take the cab out at the start of the night and pay a set rent for the equipment. Whatever money we make past that, we keep. If you want to ride on our cab, just throw a hand up and yell. aXis: Just yell? Don’t you hear a lot of voices while cruising the downtown streets? Teddy: Well it helps if you yell something that makes sense, not just “hey!” Jeremy: Yeah, people have actually gotten mad at us for not stopping when all they say is “hey,” and they’re like, already behind us. How are we supposed to know? Teddy: Yeah at least say “hey cabbie,” or “hey pedicab.” Jeremy: Or “bike dude.” Teddy: I get “bike dude” all the time! aXis: So once they get on, is it a tour, or just a point A to point B kind of deal? Jeremy: Really you can do whatever you want. Some people want to just stroll around and see what’s happening or see if there are any bars they want to try out. Others know exactly where they want to go. Either way the pricing is basically the same, unless you have us driving around for an hour or something. Teddy: I’ve had people stay on my cab for three hours, but they just kept throwing me money so I kept going. I didn’t mind – made my night simple and easy. aXis: You mentioned the fee – how does pricing work exactly? Teddy: Five per person. Oh man, I said that so quickly… I’m just so used to answering it. Fun fact: the first words out of my mouth in 2015 were “five per person.” Jeremy: Yeah but that can be a sliding scale. If 4 people jump in

the cab and go to a bar that’s like, 200 feet away for some reason, and that does happen, we don’t always hold them to the price. Teddy: Same goes for super long rides, or long tours. Time is money, so take care of us! aXis: What about that 3 hour ride you mentioned, do you remember what they paid you? Teddy: Oh absolutely, that was my biggest tip ever. 360 bucks. Then they invited me to sneak into the pool at their hotel with them but I politely declined. I wanted to go lay in bed with all my new 20 dollar bills. aXis: That must have been great! But maybe a little awkward there at the end… That sort of interaction happen regularly? Jeremy: All the time. People are out having fun, drinking, whatever. I guess they just feel like making new friends. I’ve been invited to hotel rooms, condos, houses in Thornton Park, for all sorts of things. Some I’m not sure I can tell you about. Teddy: (makes a variety of gestures, some indicating drug use, others rather obscene) aXis: Oh, so I guess I won’t bother to ask if you’ve ever taken people up on these offers. Jeremy: I can’t speak for Ted, but when I’m out there, I’m out there to make money, so that’s all I’m really thinking about. Teddy: I probably should have taken those four girls up on THEIR offer but yeah I’m generally the same way. Which is why I’m excited about the new app. aXis: Okay, so let’s talk about that. How exactly does this new app work? Jeremy: So, everyone likes Uber but those guys can’t go where bike taxis go. We can hit all the closed streets and skip past a lot of traffic, we know all the shortcuts. So it’s a huge advantage to be

able to use this app to help you get around downtown. Whenever you’re ready to ride, whether it’s back home or to your hotel or your car or another bar or whatever, you can just open up the app and virtually hail a pedicab. The nearest pedicabber gets a little ping on his phone and comes and picks you up. The price is already factored in, so that five per person we talked about, and it’s linked to your card so you don’t have to pay your driver. Teddy: Unless you want to tip him, of course. aXis: Should there be a safety concern? Teddy: I’ve been doing this for three years and I’ve never heard of, or been a part of, any incident that caused injury, not in downtown Orlando anyway. Every driver is licensed, every company is inspected, and every passenger is insured. Jeremy: When I first started about a year ago, I was actually pretty surprised by how respectful a lot of cars and pedestrians were. I won’t say this always happens, but most of the time, people give us enough room and kind of help us out. I think anyone can see that we’re working hard and they respect that, and it makes our job a lot easier and a lot safer than if people were just trying to run us over or not paying attention to us. aXis: We’re going to provide information about the new app at the end of the interview, but are there any last things you’d like to mention about your service? Jeremy: Ted and I have talked about this a lot, and we always tell people on the fence about a ride : You can choose to spend time or spend money, but you can always make more money and you can never make more time. Teddy: Everyone is out to have a good time so spend a couple bucks and save some time and take a pedicab ride. Make the most of your night out! - James Killgallon
