SOUNDCHECK: LOCAL NOISE

RUG RUG. Is. What its name implies. RUG is ubiquitous, spanning all genres of music, styles, characters, and tastes. The irony of the name is that Rug means nothing, while the energy it creates is everything. It is whatever the audience wants or needs it to be. Devoid of musical cynicism, RUG creates what they enjoy. They write music for everybody because they write it for themselves. RUG seeks nothing from their audience but their unrelenting passion for music (and a little bit of dancing). With a reliance on collective creativity, humor, and an organic writing style, RUG has put the finishing touches on their sophomore release, 02. Written and recorded in various Central Florida locations, including Orange City’s North Avenue Studios, the album is a tribute to collaboration. An amalgamation of times, styles, and emotions, RUG’s album will somehow resonate with casual listeners, critics, cynics and bloggers. Let 02 find it’s way into your ears, and begin to understand why RUG is RUG. Some words with Jon of RUG...

aXis: So, for those that have never had the RUG experience, how would you intro your band to Central Florida? Jon: Wow. That’s not a very easy question to answer. After recording our new album, we had a conversation about how we would genre label RUG, and ultimately settled on the phrase “radio-friendly indie rock.” I’m not sure that that’s an official genre, but I think it pretty accurately describes the music. We haven’t set out to write music with a specific sound. Hogan, Andrew, C.L. and I have really just written music together in our own ways and the product of that is what we took to the studio to record 02. For those looking for a more formal introduction, “Good evening, Central Florida. We are RUG. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance,” aXis: If you had to put this new CD on the shelf(the old school CD shelf that is), what two most similar major CDs would be to the left and right of it, over the span of rock and roll, or just your CD collection? Jon: As far as modern music and our personal CD collections go, I think that RUG’s 02 would fit nicely right between Kings of Leon’s Because of the Times and Young the Giant’s Young the Giant, with Jack White one row over to the left, Temper Trap one row over to the right and The National tucked somewhere in between. aXis: You guys have had some great FMF appearances, and hosted big late night closing parties at The Social, do you feel you have captured that live party aspect in the studio? Jon: RUG has been so grateful to have been a part of Florida Music Festival for the past three years! It’s shows like our closing sets at FMF that inspire us to capture our live sound in the studio. During the production of 02, we slaved over every aspect to make sure that the people leaving a RUG show with a copy of our album can put the CD into their stereo or computer later on and hear exactly what they experienced in person (the reason that they bought the album in the first place!). aXis: Your dream opening slot on any tour from the past 40 years of rock, and why? Jon: I know it’s not a tour, but I think we’d sacrifice an entire tour to have been a part of Glastonbury 2008. That year in particular featured some incredible acts, and some of our favorite bands: Kings of Leon, Foals, Vampire Weekend, The Raconteurs, JayZ & The National. After watching footage of KOL’s set, I definitely dreamed about what it would be like to perform in front of that many people that are so eager to hear your music. I’d love to be able to share a festival billing with bands like that, bands that inspire us and bands that we’ve been listening to for a long time. I think Glastonbury sold around 130,000 passes for the weekend - that’s a lot of people. It makes me really wish that more people had supported Orlando Calling last year; it would be great to have something like that in our backyard. aXis: Your on your death bed, about to ascend to the great stage in the sky, what song or tune would you like playing as your outro? Jon: That’s an easy one. Jeff Buckley’s “Grace.” WHO: RUG (CD Release) w/ Heckfire / RJ Harmon & Company WHERE: Backbooth WHEN: Sat, May 12th

IN A GALAXY NOT FAR ENOUGH AWAY!

A WANZIE B CELEBRITY! CELEBRITY SQUARES

A LONG TIME AGO: THE EIGHTIES STRIKE BACK WHAT: Retelling of the classic Star Wars Trilogy through a lens of the 80’s.

WHERE: PINK Venue WHEN: 5/17 @ 6:45pm / 5/19 @ 11:15am 5/20 @ 3pm / 5/23 @ 7:30pm / 5/25 @ 5pm 5/26 @ 7:45pm / 5/27 @ 1:45pm A Conversation with Director Simon MacDonald... aXis: So, an ‘80s version of Star Wars, wasn’t Star Wars in the ‘80s ish? Tell us about your twist on the epic intro to the biggest film series of all time? MacDonald: Yes, although the Original Star Wars Trilogy happened “A long time ago...” the films have this timelessness to them because Lucas put them in a ‘lived in’ world. Most SciFi up to that time had been clean and pristine (2001). We put another filter onto the story; the gaudiness that was 80’s pop. The characters that you are familiar with get blended with 80’s icons. Chewbacca is Teen Wolf, Han is Billy Idol, and so on. aXis: For some reason everyone seems to love the ‘80s now, for those of us that remember them, they were kind of goofy, what are your reasons for loving the ‘80s, and if you really don’t, what are the best aspects of that decade to mock? MacDonald: I am more than surprised that the 80’s have outlived their welcome. Throwbacks generally come 20 years after a generation. In the 80’s we had the 50’s/60’s and in the 90’s it was inevitably 70’s. The 80’s had a lot of ground breaking stuff and they took a lot of risks. Most of those risks are deplorable. I’ve decided to put both the good and the bad in the show because the more polarizing, the better your memory of it. aXis: So Lando is the only brother in the cast?! Was this something you blame Lucas for, or just the ‘80s in general!? MacDonald: We actually had this discussion as a cast. I think it was because the 80’s was an odd time. The U.S. was licking its wounds from major political change and we had changed from a nation of hippies and squares to one of yuppies and slackers. Change was obvious and giving a major role to an African-American was a good way to force that change to the forefront. But it is odd that out of a galaxy of aliens, droids and Stromtroopers there’s only one black guy. aXis: Is there a make out scene between the two siblings? MacDonald: No make out scene,....between siblings. We are a family friendly show. aXis: Please tell us Molly Ringwald is involved somehow? MacDonald: She’s only involved in homage. aXis: Anything else you would like to tell the Fringe following, and lure them back to the greatest worst decade of the past century, in a galaxy far, far away?! WHAT: THE BIGGEST FRINGE PRODUCTION EVER WHO: A- LIST LOCALS ACTING AS B LIST CELEBS WHERE: Orange venue/ Margeson Theatre Shakes WHEN: 5/18 @ 9:30pm / 5/19 @ 11:30pm 5/20 @ 7:15pm / 5/22 @ 10:30pm / 5/24 @ 9:30pm 5/24 @ 1130pm / 5/26 @ 5:30pm A Conversation with Producer/Director Michael Wanzie... aXis: First of all, how did you come about selecting your cast of celebs? Wanzie: Working at the Parliament House as I do, gearing up for Fringe coincides with gearing up for Gay Days, while keeping the Theatre booked with new shows at the same time. Knowing it would be nearly impossible to get any real rehearsal time with myself and the large cast all together at the same time I selected, without an audition - people with whom I have worked on various other projects whom I knew I count on to show up and be funny with little or know rehearsal. Even as of this late date, we have had only two think/tank meetings with only a few persons in attendance at each, and one set building party. Our set is going to blow people away. It’s quite large for a festival setting where you have 20 minutes to load in and 10 minutes to load out for each performance. This coming Friday about half the cast will be available to play a couple of practice games on the set at the D Squared production facility where we built it in modules than can later be transported to Orlando Shakes in Loch Haven Park. The very first time the entire cast will be together will be at the one and only tech rehearsal we allowed to have in our venue on the Sunday prior to Fringe Opening. aXis: Secondly, why is our lady Sarah listed as ‘disgraced former Governor’, but Prez Clinton isn’t listed as ‘disgraced former Prez?’ Are you fans of Bubba? Wanzie: I am unconcerned with the personal lives and sexual forays of our elected officials. There is likely disgrace to be found in the personal lives of every person to have ever sat in the oval office when it comes to sex and misconduct. Ms. Palin is a disgraced former governor quite simply because she walked off her job. She left the office she to which she was elected, and for which people paid good money to help her obtain, and she turned her back on her state and failed to perform the civic duties with which she asked voters to entrust her. She could have gone off and f*cked an intern or a moose for all I care, and that would not cause me to refer to her as disgraced or cause me to say she should be barred from ever running for public office ever again. President Cinton had his dick sucked. What do I care? aXis: This isn’t your first rodeo, how do you plan to surprise your guests this year? Wanzie: In many ways, I’ll be surprised right along with the audience since a great deal of show will be improvised, and the contestants really will be drawn randomly from the audience. In other ways I can assure you, that although we play actual games that are fatithful to the Hollywood Squares (the show we are spoofing) format, this is no ordinary game show. It is in fact full of well thought out and planned surprises that bare no resemblence to what happens during an actual telivised game show and which I know will delight our guests aXis: Is their any correlation to the $100 cash prize each night, and the average cost of dry cleaning a White House intern’s dress? Wanzie: Perhaps you will be selected as a contestant and you can ask Bill that question yourself. aXis: So are any Alaskan wildlife harmed in this production? And you can’t count Jeff Jones as wildlife... Wanzie: I think the answer to this question depends on whether or not any Alaskan wildlife attend the show. Sarah does have a concealed weapons permit.

JEFF JONES TOP FIVE REASONS TO FRINGE IT THIS YEAR... First of all, if you live in Orlando and have never heard of or been to the Fringe Festival, SHAME ON YOU! It’s been going for 21 years now and is one of the best events that happens in Orlando. Here’s my top 5... JANINE KLEIN: GAY BAR STAR, RETURN FROM THE BIG HOUSE: Ok, she appeals to gays because Janine sing show tunes with her amazing vocal talents. She appeals to straight men because she has huge boobs. She appeals to everyone because she’s damn funny. MITZI MORRIS-DAZZLED TO DEATH: Mitzi Morris is a pancake waitress who sings in a musical murder mystery. I like mystery, I like music and I love pancakes. JOAN CRAWFORD’S HOUSE PARTY: Orlando’s leading cross dressing comedic actor Doug Ba’aser does what he was born to do, portray Hollywood Icon Joan Crawford. Knowing what he does on stage, most of the show will probably have to be viewed with your eyes closed. DOG POWERED ROBOT: Yes, I said, Dog Powered Robot. This fun show is a cross between Benji and Transformers (if the Transformers were made out of cardboard). BLUE & TOD TOO DRUNK TO FRINGE: Just like the title says, drink a lot and go see this show. I know I said 5, but I have to plug a show I am in, Wanzie’s CELEBRITY SQUARES. It’s basically Hollywood Squares but we didn’t want to get sued and we’re not in Hollywood. Plus Orlando Celebrity Impersonator Squares is a lot to put on a poster. More info at OrlandoFringe.org

Each year, Orange County residents are exposed to the 7,000 chemicals in second-hand smoke, 70 of which can cause cancer. Together, we can make our workplace and public spaces smoke-free, giving everyone the clear air we deserve.
