CITY ARTS FACTORY 29 S. Orange Avenue Exhibit runs through May 20th • Free Orlando’s own Jim Leatherman. This exhibit is a photography retrospective of his career documenting the music scene from 1984 – 2014 as well as photos taken at shows all over the country. “I love music. I love photography. I put the two together so I wouldn’t have to cheat on one. I began sneaking my camera into shows 30+ years ago, I am rarely without it since. These days, I shoot anything that shows up in front of my lens. I learned black and white development processing in high school and color processing at the one-hour photo hut – my own tiny university. My work has been published in magazines and newspapers, and on album covers, but I most enjoy seeing it on a beat-up band flyer stapled to a telephone pole. I’m in Central Florida but love to see a hill or two every once in a while and am happy to travel.” – Jim Leatherman

MINUS THE BEAR / Into It. Over It. The Social Mon, May 11th • 7:30pm Doors TheSocial.org / @SocialOrlando / $25
Indie/Alternative outfit Minus The Bear put out their most recent album Lost Loves which is a collection of b-sides and rarities from earlier years, last year. On their 15th year as a band, Minus The Bear are sharing the rare material and celebrating a decade of Beer Commercials’ with Otown this month. aXis: A lot of the times, when a band puts out a B-sides record, it feels like leftovers, but Lost Loves has a much stronger cohesion. How cognizant were you when you were sequencing the record that it felt like an actual album? Dave Knudson: Originally, we were going to have all the songs grouped together by album—“These are the tracks from Planet Of Ice, these are the tracks from Omni, these are the tracks from Infinity Overhead”—but listening to it, these songs are really strong. Some of these songs should’ve been on the last few records. Ultimately, the goal was to make a record that stands alone on its own, even though it’s jumping between various albums. There are ebbs and flows, and dynamics. We don’t even feel like it’s a throwaway record; we feel like it is an album. It was a challenge: three different recording sessions, two different producers, three different studios, all that stuff. But ultimately, it’s kind of funny how all these songs meshed with each other in a really cool way. aXis: What can Minus The Bear fans look forward to in 2015? Will there be a new record? DK: That’s still up in the air. We’re out of our record deal; we have no contracts. We are free agents. The goal of this tour is to promote Lost Loves and celebrate Beer Commercials’ 10th anniversary, then we’ll go home and begin working toward what will be the next record, which should be out next year. aXis: What does the new material sound like? DK: There’s been some inspiration from earlier records. It will be more immediate and potentially more in-your-face, which might sound a little weird, but I think will be pretty awesome.

THE MAINE / Real Friends / Knuckle Puck / The Technicolors The Beacham Sat, May 16th • 5pm Doors TheBeacham.com / @TheBeacham / $20-$25
Pop outfit The Maine have done nothing but grow since their 2007 debut. With their most recent album American Candy, they continue to mix things up and demonstrate their musical maturity. Some words with the band to preview their Beacham stop. aXis: Who are some key songs/artists that you listened to that inspired this release? The 90’s has always been a huge influence on us because thats the time period we grew up. The Rolling Stones are my favorite band of all time. A band called the New Radicals put out the best album of the 90’s (in my opinion) & we definitely referenced that more than once. I think the word “groove” got thrown around a lot. Most of the songs have a nice groove going on. aXis: Some of your favorite shows as a band and what makes them so special? I think when you play any city for the first time, it’s always going to be amazing. You have no idea what the show will be like and it always seems to blow your mind. Its impossible to name just a few because at this point we’ve played a ton of great shows. If the energy is there it always gets a great spot stored in my brain somewhere. aXis: You guys have been together 8 years, how do you maintain the internal relationships? Yeah 8 years is a long time! I think the most beneficial thing for us is when never give ourselves enough time to really think about what’s happened in the last 8 years. It’s gone by so fast and we’ve experienced so much together it always kept us tight. There also aren’t any egos. I feel like in most bands there is always that one guy who just becomes a dick and that really separates a band. We always try to keep each other in check and stay positive when things get a little crazy. It’s not always sunshine buts there’s never been a really stormy day either.

who: PASSION PIT where: THE BIG GUAVA FESTIVAL when: Sat, May 8th info: BigGuavaFest.com who: FORTUNATE YOUTH where: REGGAE on the BLOCK 2 when: Sat, May 8th Fortunate Youth is a collaboration of SoCal reggae stand-outs, compiled from the local and touring players of the region, the indie ethos brotherhood have built a following from the coast to cosat. With their last two indie releases debuting atop the Billboard Reggae Charts, the Youth have seen their club dates turn into festival stages, and national tour slots with the likes of Tribal Seeds, Dirty Heads and others. aXis: How did the SoCal reggae scene influence your sound in the studio and onstage? Dan: I don’t know where it all started, but in the beginning in the South Bay I listened to Tomorrows Bad Seeds all the time. Started to listen to other bands throughout Southern California like Tribal Seeds from San Diego. And of course Slightly Stoopid. And there’s the old school bands like Ghetto Fabulosos. Travis and I listened to that one album of theirs non-stop in high school. aXis: How deep are those rasta roots? Dan: Dan: You know when we first started out we didn’t say alright lets start a reggae band. We all just picked up instruments and this is the music that came naturally. As far as Rastafarianism goes, we definitely believe in some of those teachings, but we dont hold those beliefs. So no we dont feel any pressure. We respect all religions, but we know roots music obviously stems from Rastafarianism.
Formed in 2007 by Michael Angelakos, Passion Pit is an band that is a perfect blend of electronica , pop and alternative indie rock. Kindred, the recently released third studio album, embodies everything that you have come to know and love about Passion Pit. Currently on tour, check out Passion Pit at the Big Guava music festival in Tampa, FL on May 8th. aXis: How would you describe your musical style? Passion Pit: It’s a very classic combination. Some of the best girl-pop songs of the ’60s were terribly depressing and yet wonderfully sing-along-able. I always emphasize the prettiness of the music, the beauty of it, to be as important as the pain. aXis: How has your sound evolved over the past years? PP: I read this speech about how bands change the music they make according to the venues and radio response. Coldplay, for instance, during Parachutes, and Coldplay now, is a completely different band. And as they grew the music changed. I just don’t see us doing that, or I don’t think like that. aXis: When you are on stage, how do you get the crowed amped for your performance? PP: I have no idea what I do. Something happens. I run around a lot, and I don’t know why, but when I go on stage, I am just compelled to do that. So maybe that. Leading up to a show we are anxious, but once we get on stage, it’s great.
