who: J. BOOG where: ROTB 3 when: Sat, May 7th aXis: How would you describe your musical style? J. Boog: I’m Samoan. I was born in Long Beach, California and raised in Compton, California. You know, my parents were really strict in the house and growing up in Compton, it wasn’t really easy for them to let us just go outdoors and just go cruise around. They made sure that we knew who we were and what we really about. They weren’t hearing about us getting in trouble and letting any bad outside influence into the house. It worked out you know. I think my siblings and I carry that everywhere in life. This helps in like being humble in everything, to know where we came from, see where it’s taking us, and making sure we don’t step out of bounds.Yeah, we’re just grateful for everything we have and we have my parents to thank for.We just making sure we keep that in our heads all the time. aXis: Xxplain to folks the difference between Jamaican and Hawaiian reggae? J. Boog: I think as far as the message goes, we are all talking about the same thing. I guess one of the main differences is, that one the Hawaiian side, it’s more melodic. I’m not saying that Jamaican reggae is not melodic but the Hawaiian side has a lot of singers that come from the backyard jammin’ in the Hawaiian style.

who: ALABAMA SHAKES where: HANGOUT FESTIVAL when: Friday, May 20th - Sun, May 22nd info: HangOutFest.com aXis: New colorful sounds on the new album, how far did you push the envelope? Brittany Howard: I wanted to try everything, because we finally had the opportunity, and it was also an exciting prospect that people were going to hear it. For some people, that would be a lot of pressure, but I was really excited about it. Because there were so many ideas I had and so many things I wanted to try — not only musically, but also with my voice, with my instrument, and I knew I could do a lot more things. aXis: What were some of the early influences? Howard: I remember when and where I was when I first heard Pink Floyd. I was 14 years old and I was getting a ride from school, from a senior, back to my house. And they started playing Pink Floyd and I was like, “What is this?” and they explained it to me, and I had never heard any music like that. It wasn’t one genre or another; it was just whatever they wanted to create, and I thought it was so interesting. And I started getting into music around that time, like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath; I started getting into that kind of music, and I thought, “I been missing everything!” It was like having blinders on. I started really diving into the history of music when I was around 14 years old. aXis: So, your first album and first tour had many firsts? Howard: I had never seen any real mountains. I had never seen an ocean outside of the gulf. I had never seen snow-peaked mountains or ice and snow on the side of the road. I had never really felt really cold wind. I had never seen the desert. I had never seen what the sky looks like in the West. Everything I saw was new, and I got to experience it with the guys.
