MARSHMELLO

who: DIRTY HEADS where: SUNFEST when: Sat, May 6th aXis: You guys seem pretty amped to rock the tunes off the last release live? Jared: It’s the most core Dirty Heads album we’ve done. One of the most important things about this album is the reason we self-titled it. This album has all of the elements that we’ve tried to play around with. We had to go through those other albums to really find out exactly who we are, where it was natural. Now, I just think our sound is better and more confident. aXis: You split the album into two parts, Day and Night, is this an ode to old school full length albums or tapes? Jared: Nowadays, it’s so easy to just listen to one song. Have a song on your iTunes playlist, you probably don’t even know who the artist is because it doesn’t matter, you just like that track. So we were trying to provide the order we think you should listen to these in and get people in front of what we think. When you do that and you’re doing it in our original way, I feel like it makes it timeless.”

who: TWENTY ONE PILOTS where: HANGOUT FESTIVAL when: Saturday, May 20th info: HangOutFest.com aXis: Headlining beach fests are a far cry from touring in a van, how was that? Tyler: We had an 18-passenger van, and we took out the back two seats and had a buddy of ours build this wooden frame and we had a futon mattress in the back so we would rotate. Someone would drive, someone would be in the passenger seat watching the driver, making sure they don’t fall asleep, a couple other guys on some benches but then ultimately we had a luxury suite in the back because we had the mattress. That was my personal vehicle for a while, too. It was always kind of creepy when I wasn’t on tour. I’d drive up and meet people places and I have this bed in the back, like I was trying to do something about it. It was a weird time in my life. I still have the van. I use to move furniture now. But we spent a lot of good time in that van. aXis: So do you really ‘care what (they)you think’ when seeing 50,000 fans? Tyler: It’s just being honest. One think that you notice about anyone that gets up on stage is that they don’t really have a lot of self-awareness. It’s kind of a trait that performers don’t have because you just kinda just have to let go and do whatever you want to do on stage. Self-awareness is a character trait that’s horrible to have if you’re a performer. I think that a lot of these performers that we see get up on stage and play music, there’s a sense of them truly not caring how they’re coming across. They are just themselves. I look up to a lot of people who are like that. I just think that for me personally, I’m not completely like that. I’m absolutely aware of how I’m coming across. And I’m absolutely unsure of whether or not it’s good. I guess I’m also very dynamic in the sense that I combat that sense of insecurity with a grand sense of confidence just to get over it. I like to describe it as a tension, not really a problem that you solve but a tension that you manage. I do know you’re going to listen and I do care what you think but at the same time I’m still gonna try really hard to do what is that I wanted to do in the beginning.
