Sublime with Rome Hard Rock Live Sat, Nov 21st HardRockLive.com • @HardRockLiveOrl
Sublime with Rome dropped their second album as a unit this past July with Sirens, giving the fans a better idea of who this band really is, not that they have spent time on the road, in the studio, and at the beach bar together! Rome continues with the melodic tradition that made Sublime a seminal ska punk outfit for the ‘90s generation, and maintained their relevance to a new audience more than two decades later. With drummer Josh Freese (A Perfect Circle, Nine Inch Nails) now permanently installed behind the kit and Sublime bassist and co-founder Eric Wilson anchoring the group, Sublime With Rome are armed with an album that makes a real statement... their statement. Words with Rome before their stop in Otown at Hard Rock Live on Nov 29th... aXis: So, what made this recording different than your debut together? Rome: We had more time, we know each other better now, and we’re even better musicians,” said Rome Ramirez, who was just 20-years-old when he embarked on this journey. Now 27, the singer, guitarist, and songwriter is truly flourishing. Would you say there is a major theme revolving around the new record? Rome: For me it was all about accepting where we were at as a band and where we need to go whether it is personally, professionally, etc. Every certain amount of years I like to take a step back. I analyze everything that’s going on around me and make the next move forward. This record came around right in the middle of that time period. Overall the record has a simplistic style too it. Some would say vintage or old school. Was there reasoning behind it? Rome: You’re absolutely right. We didn’t want to overproduce the record. The majority of the album we tracked together in a giant room using vintage gear. We actually didn’t even use any poly synthesizers. We used basic instruments, an organ, some keyboards, guitars, drums, vocals, bass and horns. The entire album was practically recorded live, first pass. It felt like a good way to do it. Want to talk a bit about the album artwork? Rome: A guy named Drew Brophy painted it on a giant canvas. We are all pretty excited with the way it came out. It looks great and it also has that old school feel to it. He took the vision we had envisioned and made it better than any of us expected. A lot of time and work went into this record. How do you want this record to be perceived? Rome: I want it to live. I want our fans to listen to it and really get to know it. This album is definitely mastered to flow and be a smooth listen. You can put on track one and it’ll just flow well. We intentionally let some of the songs bleed into each other so it is meant for people to play track after track and let it sit. - Chandler Thompson

Goodbye George O’Leary, May Our Golden Grump Live On For Eternity @MAYORBURNSY
BIDS THE GRUMPY ‘OLE MAN A FOND FAREWELL...
Despite the fact that we knew it was coming sooner or later, George O’Leary’s resignation/early retirement was a bit of a shock. After all, this is a guy who has given exactly zero fucks about what anyone thinks since the day he took the UCF coaching gig all the way back in 2004. He didn’t give a flying dry hump what anyone thought when his team went winless in his first season, as he happily threw Mike Kruczek’s regime under the bus for poor recruiting, and he didn’t give a rat’s ass what anyone thought about this season’s woes, as we are certainly heading toward another winless finish and the title of the Worst Team in College Football. But you know what? I’m gonna miss O’Leary for his give-no-shits attitude. I’ve written and said plenty of negative (and downright mean) things about the Really Ol’ Ball Coach in the past, but I agree with a lot of the UCF Kool-Aid drinkers – to an extent – that nobody but George could have taken UCF to where it is today. After all, this is a dude who coached the (Golden) Knights to a freaking FIESTA BOWL VICTORY just two years ago. I think a lot of people forgot about that, or at least expected that to happen every year, because that is such an unfathomable achievement that you really should say it multiple times to feel the impact of just what it means. UCF WON THE FIESTA BOWL. UCF WON THE FIESTA BOWL. UCF WON THE FIESTA BOWL. UCF WON THE FIESTA BOWL. UCF WON THE FIESTA BOWL. I try not to be the guy always dropping floaters in the public pool, but what are the chances that ever happens again? BLAKE BORTLES IS NOT WALKING THROUGH THAT DOOR! Hindsight is a fool’s game, so it’s impossible to say that someone like Gene Chizik or Charlie Strong would have led UCF to a FIESTA BOWL WIN, too, and that’s the main thing that O’Leary will always be able to hold over the heads of the haters when they say things like, “The guy bookended his run at UCF with winless seasons.” O’Leary, who will probably outlive us all, can always remind his greatest critics about that one time that he hoisted a trophy in the air with the biggest shit-eating grin any of us has ever seen. To answer the previous question, though: never. It’s never going to happen again, with a margin of error of approximately a blue moon shining on a dog’s ass. And that’s what makes the feat so awesome. Baylor is still going strong and steamrolling opponents, and maybe one day they’ll win a few National Championships and establish themselves as one of the big dogs in college football. Little Ol’ UCF is simply going to cherish that Fiesta Bowl win more than anyone else could, and while some people might see that as sad and holding onto the past, it’s what we have. We embrace what we have, we celebrate what we have, and we appreciate what we have. And George gets to take credit for that.
Spaces filling fast for Fall 2016!
His biggest accomplishment, of course, is the fact that UCF football players graduated and went on to better things. O’Leary has said that his favorite thing about coaching was when players returned one, two, even five years later and thanked him for his grumpy ways. Obviously, not all was golden under O’Leary’s watch, but again – he didn’t care what anyone thought. It was O’Leary’s way or the highway, and just like I4, his way was filled with bumps and crashes, but gosh dangit we got to where he wanted us to go. (Thanks, I’m pretty proud of how bad that analogy is.) Now, of course, the question is: What’s next? The most ironic thing about O’Leary taking a lifeboat from the sinking ship is that he has almost left the program where it was when he took over. He famously said that Kruczek’s team was an “empty cupboard,” and while there is certainly some talent on this very, very young roster, whomever is named the new coach will still have an incredible uphill battle. My prediction is that it’s Meorge Mo’Meary, a grumpy old Irish man with a fake mustache. (My real prediction is Mario Cristobal, because he is simply the perfect guy for the job, but that’s another rambling 900 words for another time.) Until that new coach is hired, I come here to praise O’Leary, not defecate on him. In a business filled with phony, soulless dickheads who care more about winning and pleasing the almighty dollars of the a-hole boosters than they do about keeping their players from heading down a dark road that ends with prison or worse, O’Leary did what he wanted to do while being realistic about what UCF could achieve. While idiots like yours truly demanded a program that competes with the established Power 5 programs every year, O’Leary used his (comparably) meager budget to hire coaches who could go out and find guys like Jeff Godfrey, Storm Johnson, J.J. Worton, and Bortles. And that probably would have continued had it not been for a certain former Athletic Director who was terrible at his job. So to that next coach (please be Mario Cristobal, please be Mario Cristobal), I remind you that underneath the debris of a briefly-awesome program that WON THE FIESTA BOWL, there is a blueprint for success. Follow that bumpy, grumpy road that O’Leary sort of paved, and there’s success to be had. Care about the graduation rates as much as the on-field performances and the universe will reward UCF with some sweet, sweet college football karma. And to George, just sit back and smile, buddy. I know you don’t give a fuck what I have to say, but listen to me on this one and enjoy what you’ve accomplished. Because it’ll be a long, long time before anyone ever wears a shit-eating grin like you again.
