“Happy and heavy” is a proper way to describe the vibe that has carried Rusko from the first moments of dubstep’s life to the biggest stages in the world; from a single, seminal bass wobble to a swath of sounds that can’t be capped in a few simple syllables. He might be one of the guys who started it all – but he’s sure as hell not going to leave it at that.
48 THE BABADOOK FRI, NOV 28 SUSPENSE
Six years after the violent death of her husband, Amelia (Essie Davis) is at a loss. She struggles to discipline her ‘out of control’ 6 year-old, Samuel (Noah Wiseman), a son she finds impossible to love. Samuel’s dreams are plagued by a monster he believes is coming to kill them both. When a disturbing storybook called ‘The Babadook’ turns up at their house, Samuel is convinced that the Babadook is the creature he’s been dreaming about. His hallucinations spiral out of control, he becomes more unpredictable and violent. Amelia, genuinely frightened by her son’s behavior, is forced to medicate him. But when Amelia begins to see glimpses of a sinister presence all around her, it slowly dawns on her that the thing Samuel has been warning her about may be real.

On Passafire’s fifth studio release, Vines, the Savannah, GA based rock outfit continues to progress towards what they feel is their true identity as a band in the reggae rock genre, debuting on the top of the Billboard Reggae Charts. aXis: You guys have become a household name in the Southeast and on the Rasta festival circuit. Any places you like to call a home away from home? Ted: Yea, the circuit is always awesome for us. But in general, Florida is kind of like the California of the east coast because it has the beach culture all over, but it’s also got the same Georgia-vibe we like and are used too. We really enjoy playing Ft. Lauderdale and St. Pete, but Orlando has always been amazing and a great time, so it’s probably our favorite city to play in Florida. aXis: You guys seem to be able to stay dialed into the fanbase even as it grows exponentially on the Social Net, and in the crowds. Does that become more work than the music? Ted: It should be a priority for every band out there. I’ll tell you a brief little story and I won’t mention any names, but when I was young and impressionable, and we had just started Passafire, I went to a show of a band I really dug and was like, those guys are doing what I want to do. So, I went up to the lead singer, told him I dug his music and handed him a copy of our demo at the time. He told me to fuck off. Pretty much from that moment, I realized no one ever wants to feel like that. Fans that come see you pay for you to play music for a living. The fact that we play music for a living is a blessing in itself and the fact that we can do just that, and nothing else, is amazing. Sure, it gets crazy sometimes. You talk to people once on Facebook and they think they’re your best friend and it gets weird. But, for the most part, the best thing we can do is keeping in touch with our fans on a very real and genuine basis.

aXis: Qualities or traits that help you do what you do? Alex Baugh: I love music. I’m always singing and coming up with new songs in my head. I’m a positive person and like to share my upbeat energy. aXis: What makes Orlando a cool place? Alex Baugh: Orlando is an entertainment destination. People visit to have a good time. UCF is a great University with students that like to party. aXis: Who in music inspires you? Alex Baugh: I like Prince a lot. He’s always experimenting or exploring with his music. I respect that he’s an artist who likes to expand his boundaries. aXis: Where do you go to escape? Alex Baugh: The ocean. I feel at peace when I go surfing. I also really like to travel. aXis: Favorite dance move? Alex Baugh: I don’t have one. Dancing to me is very spontaneous. I like to do what feels right in the moment.

who:
@MATISYAHU @HOBORLANDO @AXISMAG
Matisyahu / where: House of Blues / when: Tue, Nov 11th / info: 407.934.2583 / @HOBorlando
Matisyahu has come a long way since 2005 when he released his breakout album, Live at Stubb’s. Since then he has pushed himself dynamically and creatively, breaking with expectation at every turn and remaking his musical image. And his latest—Akeda (Uh-kay-duh)—is no different in this regard. aXis: It’s been a decade since your breakout debut with ‘Live at Stubb’s.’ How do you keep the recording process fresh? Matisyahu: On this record, I really just wrote from my guts. I wanted everything to come from the inside . . . I didn’t want to make any compromises with the music or the recording process. It was all done at my place, or at Studio G with my bass player, Stu Brooks, who produced the record. Our musical tastes are so similar, and we’ve been working together so long, there was no need to go out looking for the ‘right producer’ or the ‘right beat’ . . . Everything just came to us, and it was always right on the money.
aXis: We had a big initiative on the Florida ballot this past month? You are familiar with the concept, how does it affect the recording process and the life of a musician? Matisyahu: In the period of time leading up to the writing of Akeda, I specifically did not smoke because I wanted to feel everything – the good and the bad – and so I stayed away from all substances…not just cannabis – everything from sugar to nicotine. It was a difficult time for me on many levels, but I think it accomplished its purpose. I was able to get in touch with my emotions in a way that has been difficult in periods where I have been smoking heavily. The issue for me has never been whether pot is a good or bad thing…when used in moderation, it has been a great tool. My issue has always been the moderating…I’m more of an all or nothing kind of person. aXis: So you would say that the herb is part of your creative process then? Matisyahu: It can be, but it doesn’t have to be. It can make the creative process smoother and easier, but not necessarily better.

SUNDAY KNIGHTS FOOTBALL NFL Faces Keeping the Black & Gold Relevant
Coach O’Leary harbors the most pride in graduating nearly 80% of his Seniors to the real world each year. But UCF Nation would rather boast O’Leary and Coach Brent Key’s ability to recruit blue chippers to replace all those ballers O’Leary graduates to playing on Sunday afternoons. The Knights developed a reputation for finding underdogs at the skill positions, and placing them on NFL rosters once their Black & Gold session expires. Although All Pro wideout, Brandon Marshall reminds the primetime Monday Night Football audience during intros that he’s a proud graduate of “Receiver U;” other past offensive stars are busy each Sunday making sure the rest of the country knows where they came from.
UCF 2010-13 @BBortles5
Blake Bortles QUARTERBACK | JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS
He may have just assumed the helm in Jax, but is their any denying this guy. We put him here because he is the highest draft pick in UCF history and the poster boy for UCF in the post Daunte era. In Blake we trust. He may have even turned UCF Nation into Jag Country!
UCF 2002-05 n/a
Matt Prater PLACE KICKER | DENVER BRONCOS
Ok he is a kicker, but he single-leggedly made Tebow appear a playoff worthy QB. Most UCF fans remember him missing that extra point against Nevada in their first major bowl in ’05, but he was one of the main reasons UCF received the invite to Hawaii. He now kicks in the thin air of Colorado as Peyton’s “liquored up” kicker and made the Pro Bowl in 2013.
UCF 2002-05 @BMarshall
Brandon Marshall
WIDE RECEIEVER | CHICAGO BEARS BMarsh is is and has been one of the best receivers in the NFL. He is an all out star in the league. He is a great cheer leader for the UCF program and always comes back on bye weeks to support the Knights. Not only is he a star on the field, but also has been very brave in bringing light to the disease of depression.
UCF 2004-07 @JSitton71
Josh Sitton OFFENSIVE GUARD | GREEN BAY PACKERS
Josh opened a lot of holes for UCF’s all time leading rusher, Kevin Smith in his day. Now he protects Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay. He is a big ugly with a Super Bowl Ring, a Pro Bowl appearance and one of the biggest contracts for a Guard in the NFL. Sitton is the real deal!
UCF 2007-10
@BruceMill49er
Bruce Miller FULLBACK | SAN FRANCISCO 49ers
Bruuuuuuuce! The Diablo Rojo! Fan favorite Bruce is on top of the world. He has a Super Bowl appearance under his belt, signed a new contract, and is engaged to woman way out of his league. It’s always fun to watch Bruce pancake a Linebacker!

@MAYORBURNSY’S LIST OF THOSE OTOWN SHOULD BE MOST THANKFUL FOR MOST...
I’m a guy who believes in style, substance and maintaining and building celebrity brands. Some call me a mover, others say I’m a shaker, but nobody ever denies that I’m not the most influential person in Orlando when it comes to deciding if someone is famous or not. It’s a bit of a burden, sure, but smart people know to kiss my behind, while the dumber among us continue to think that they can succeed in life without paying the toll at the bridge they call Burnsy’s Bypass to Being Bitchin’. For example, Dwight Howard used to be a huge star and then he messed with me, and now no one knows where the f*ck that douchebag wound up. Some say Los Angeles, others say Houston. Wherever he is, he’s no longer a celebrity, because I say so. That said, this issue is always all about the most important, powerful and downright radical people in the City Beautiful, and I like to pick a little section of my own to highlight those who are either on the verge of stardom or aren’t celebrated enough for how much they’ve been kicking ass for so long. Naturally, people would expect me to be the first name on any list, but I was obviously inducted into the Burnsy’s Most Powerful People in the History of Orlando Hall of Fame. It’s me and that girl from John Tucker Must Die. She lives in Winter Park or something. So who makes my extra special list this year? Let’s dive in, you wonderful losers. Elfrid Payton The Orlando Magic’s new point guard is about as exciting and talented as they come. A lot of so-called fans were like, “Elfried Who?” when the Magic selected him, but I knew exactly who he was, because my scouts in Louisiana were blowing up my phone with messages like, “Yo Burnsy, this kid is the real deal and he’s going to lead the Magic to seven NBA Championships.” You know what? I’m drinking that Kool-Aid. (Now we just need to find out what Moe Harkless did to piss Jacque Vaughn off and get that sorted out, so the Magic can win one of 82 games this season.) Kaka If you’re one of those people who is just way too down on the Magic for being so terrible and showing no consistency out of the gates this season, then Orlando City is probably the fresh new team’s magnet on the rear end of your car right now. Because I’m very good at being American, I don’t know a lot about soccer, but my tutors tell me that Kaka is an international star and he can soccer well. What does that mean for Orlando City? All of the MLS Championship Trophies. P-Lowe at Magnolia If you haven’t swung by one of my favorite watering holes, Magnolia, which is fittingly located downtown on Magnolia, you should. For starters, there are nude portraits all over the place, but they’re hella fancy so if people walk by and see you staring at them, they’ll think you’re an artist and not a Grade A pervy skeevster. My boy P-Lowe makes a hell of a drink called, wait for it, the Magnolia, and people should try it.The drink has something in it which makes me want to keep coming back for more. I think it’s the mint. Breshad Perriman Every season, the UCF Football Fightin’ War Knights have one player that I designate as the guy who is going to be a star on Sundays. I have been right 100 percent of the time on these picks, although I don’t have enough time to go back and find evidence. Regardless, this dude is going to be a STAR wide receiver on Sundays in the NFL, and I pray it’s for the Miami Dolphins, because that offense is like a fart that someone cut right before leaving me in a hot car. Kingston the Orlando City Lion Don’t get me wrong – Stuff the Magic Dragon is my best friend. But it’s time for us to celebrate the fact that we have another fun mascot running around. Lions are basically the popes of the animal kingdom, so when other teams in any sports have other mascots like birds and stupid humans, we can take pride in knowing that Kingston can ravage them all. The staff of La Fiesta Have you eaten at La Fiesta Mexican Grill on Curry Ford? If not, you need to immediately. I praised this place in its first location on Curry Ford and because of my seal of approval the restaurant has already relocated to a better spot. My goal? For La Fiesta to be the first Mexican joint to take over an entire shopping mall. Kevin Maines Some of these people are lucky enough to be my friends, so it might seem like I’m being extra cool and showing favoritism, and I totally am. Kevin Maines is probably Orlando’s most talented musician, and if you’re unfamiliar, you need to get your asses to Magnolia on a Wednesday night and watch him play. You’ll thank me. And you’ll OWE ME. Scott Maxwell I used to be one of those assholes who talked about politics all the time, and now I hate politics, because Florida is the used condom trash can of American politics (with all due respect to New Jersey).The only way that I will even pay attention to or acknowledge local politicians and their assholery anymore is if my boy Scott Maxwell – whom I twice defeated for the title of Best Local Blogger – from the Orlando Sentinel is writing it. The guy is like a shark with giant claws, but wearing sunglasses, so you know he could shred your ass to pieces, but he’s also rad. Jenn Brown She might not live here anymore, but the NBC Sports personality and host of American Ninja Warrior was born and raised on Orlando, and last I spoke with her, she still claimed to be a diehard Magic fan. However, I’m worried that if we don’t start roping some of these celebrities back in, they’ll keep Tiger Woodsing us and start cheering for the Lakers whenever it’s convenient. Tacko Fall You may not know the name, but you can’t miss the guy. He’s 7-foot-5 and recently committed to play basketball for UCF, and while people might think that he’s just some tall dude who will sell tickets, the guy can actually ball. Kid’s going to be a star, mark my words*. *Do not actually mark my words, because I will not acknowledge any wrong predictions or statements.
