OAJ2012
3rd Annual Orange Avenue jam welcomes Melodic post grunge veterans Candlebox are headlining closing night at the 2012 Orange Avenue Jam in support of their first studio album in nearly four years, Love Stories & Other Musings. After signing to their new label AudioNest/Fontana, Candlebox are carving their own role in today’s modern music scene, thanks to the support of their loyal fans. They have spent much of the past 5 years playing stateside and abroad for troops and appearing at festivals on multiple continents. Produced by Ken Andrews (Pete Yorn, A Perfect Circle,Tenacious D, Beck), Love Stories & Other Musings features nine new tracks and will include five bonus tracks, re-records of hits including “Far Behind” and “Cover Me.” We got on the phone with lead man Kevin Martin to talk about the new album, and coming back to a state that has always embraced the band and their sound.
First album in five years, what inspired you to break the silence and get back in the studio again?
ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
KM: Years ago I read something that changed the way i look at everything! It struck so deeply that I have never forgotten it. It simply stated,“without music, life would be a mistake.” I’ve never forgotten it, even when i was struggling to find a song or a melody it kept me searching and frankly I could not imagine my life without it [music]. This record for me is no mistake, it is our music and our love for what a great gift we have been given. Love Stories & Other Musings is a new direction for us and I couldn’t be happier to share it with our fans.”
We are excited to welcome you back to Orlando for your OAJ2012 closing night headlining performance. It seems Florida in general has always been a big supporter of the band, do you feel the same, and why do you think that is?
Kevin: Floridians love rock music and have been with us since 1993.We have always felt welcome and it is a great home away from home for Candlebox.
Over the years you guys have played most every type of venue and festival, what do you like about the festival atmosphere?
Kevin: People are all there to have a good time.Always a lot of electricity in the air and we love the great out doors.
You guys have managed to make albums for two decades, what is the secret to longevity and keeping the band in good creative spirits as a group?
Kevin: The fans, this is the best job in the world and we all feel the same way.The fans make it easy for us to be creative. There is also a lot of great new music and artists that inspire us.
FMF allows unsigned acts to make up the majority of the line up and seeking the ‘dream’, what advice would you have early on in their careers?
Kevin: Be true to yourself and your music.Trust in yourself and do not question your direction as long as you are being honest. The hit will show itself to you when you are not looking for it.

fter a year and a half on the road touring 2010’s Feeding The Wolves, 10 Years reached a turning point. It was time to move forward and take full control of their career by launching their own label, Palehorse Records. In addition, the band decided to self-produce their fourth album, Minus the Machine, at drummer/ guitarist Brian Vodinh’s Kashmir Recording. ne thing that won’t change is 10 Years’ connection with their fans. With the release of Minus The Machine, the band is looking forward to hitting the road, performing in close contact with their dedicated audience. “After the last touring cycle, we realized where we should strive to be, and that’s to be totally fine in the club environment,” says Hasek. “We don’t plan to chase after arena rock or amphitheaters. If things like that happen, then so be it, but we live and die by the loyalty of the club audiences. Our fans are loyal. They travel with us, and they want us to be loyal to ourselves. That’s what keeps them coming back. They’ve been so good to us through the ups and downs of our career.”

A n the first day that Occupy Wall Street protesters camped out in New York, the legendary Flobots were in a recording studio for the first day of work on their third record. And the tweets were coming in from all over: What are you going to do about this? For Flobots, the answer was to do exactly what they’ve done since the act first formed in 2005: Engage the listener with music as compelling as its political message. Over the next six weeks, bassist Jesse Walker, drummer Kenny Ortiz, violist/vocalist Mackenzie Gault (formerly Roberts), and emcees Brer Rabbit and Jonny 5 continued to craft what would become The Circle In The Square, now set for release on August 28, 2012 by Shanachie Entertainment.

BREWSCHOOL...
KEEPING YOU HIP TO THE hops
Oktoberfest Dankeschön für Bier & Erika of
World of Beer UCF OKTOBERFEST vs ST. PATRICK’S DAY...
Oktoberfest first started in Munich, Germany back in 1810 to celebrate the marriage of King Ludwig I to Princess Therese of SaxeHildburghausen. Citizens of Munich were invited to attend the festivities on the fields in front of the gates to celebrate their marriage. The main difference between the two celebrations is the length of the celebrations themselves. Typically, St. Patricks’ Day celebrations are only a day long. Oktoberfest is a 16 day extravaganza. The official beginning is after the Mayor of Munich taps the first keg of Oktoberfest along with a 12 gun salute. ! People from all over the world travel to Munich to partake in the traditional Bavarian festivities including parades, eating Bavarian food such as Hendl (chicken), Schweinebraten (roast pork), Würstl (sausages) along with Brezeln (Pretzel), Knödel (potato or bread dumplings), Käsespätzle (cheese noodles), Rotkohl/Blaukraut (red cabbage) along with such Bavarian delicacies as Obatzda (a spiced cheese-butter spread) and Weisswurst (a white sausage). Isn’t the German language fun?! Other festivities include dressing in Lederhosen for men and Dirndl for the ladies. The best tradition is of course the Oktoberfest
beer! 7 million liters of Oktoberfest beer was served during the 16 day festival in 2007. But be weary! Oktoberfest beers range from 5.8% to 6.3%... Don’t become a “Bierleichen” ( or German for “beer corpses”).
STEIN vs MUG...
German beer steins were originally made to combat health issues that triggered the Bubonic Plague. They became a status symbol and display piece for German families. They usually had the German family crest, emblem, or shield. As the old saying goes: “The German will place great value on that which brings him his food or drink.”
SUGGESTED SAMPLING...
A great starting German beer would be Radeberger Pilsner. This 4.8% pilsner is light and crisp with a slight hoppy finish. Another great beer for a casual drinker would be Samuel Adams East West Kolsch. This American version of a German Kolsch is bright golden in color, has a subtle citrus hop taste with a crisp, light mouthfeel. And with an ABV of 5.0%, you won’t end up a ‘Bierleichen’.
SUGGESTED SAMPLING FOR HOP HEADS...
An awesome beer for the hop head that may want to experiment with heavier brews is Samuel Adams Dark Depths. This beer rests at 7.6% and has a lot of hop complexity with notes of/ orange citrus as well as earthy, herbal, and floral/ flavors and a big spicy character.
MYTHBUSTING GERMAN BREW...
The oldest brewery in the world is Weihenstephaner, which started brewing in 725 by Saint Corbinion, who started the Benedictine Monastery but due to the Huns destroyed the Monastery; only to reopen in 1040 with Abbot Arnold who obtained a license to brew and sell beer. It was that hour that marked the birth of the Weihenstephaner Monastery Brewery. Weihenstephaner Monastery Brewery burned down 4 times and in 1516, the Reinheitgbot (German Purity Law) made Weihenstephaner the beers they are today. As for not taking more credit, have you ever run in to a German that doesn’t like beer or talk about their history? I haven’t… They live beer!

aXisFIT BADASS of the MONTH
EAT
Oktoberfest is HERe and ‘tis the season for good food and even better beer. Before getting your Clarke Griswald dance on, make sure you eat as clean as possible at your local celebration to maximize the amount of great brew you can enjoy. Get a solid base of food before you lift your stein. Bratwurst and Kielbasa has no carbs and is full of protein. For extra flavor feel free to bathe that succulent sausage in sauerkraut. It is low in calories and high in nutrients. Drink it down with smooth Sam Adams Octoberfest and feel good that you haven’t went crazy with fried potato pancakes and german chocolate cake. Then proceed to do the chicken dance on the first table you find and burn off those extra Calories!
aXis: Where do you train? Haleigh: I train religiously at CrossFit Kingspoint. Crossfit is the most intense workout I have ever done. I am challenged mentally and physically on a daily basis. The coaches are extremely involved, keeping my technique consistent with detailed instruction and constant encouragement. The community of peers that you train with quickly become some of your best friends. You enter thinking “Um, I could never do this, then leave saying...I can’t believe I just did that...keep it coming!” I can honestly say it is the best part of my day, every day. aXis: What is your diet philosophy? Haleigh: I try and keep it simple, but do not stick to any “type” of diet. Protein is essential, so meat is a staple. I try to keep my carbs healthy like oatmeal, sweet potatoes and brown rice. I have recently cut back on alot of bread, pasta and sweets. I stick to dark chocolate when I want a treat. Coffee is a must for me with cream or almond milk, but no sugar. Post-workout I have a protein shake with a piece of fruit.

ADVICE FROM Andres D’Antoni 3rd year UCF Medical Student
aXis: Favorite healthy meal? Haleigh: Medium-rare steak and veggies, or a giant salad from Greens & Grille. I recently discovered spaghetti squash too. I don’t really enjoy cooking, but is so easy to make. Substitute it for pasta with a yummy meat sauce. Delish!
ASK DR. D'
Q: I LIKE TO STAY HYDRATED, BUT ALSO LIKE A FEW COLD ONES WHILE HANGING OUT... SO I TRY TO MATCH UP A WATER per DRINK... BUT ONCE I HAVE TO GO, I REALLY HAVE TO GO TOO OFTEN! WHY IS THIS? ANDRE D’: So you’re out and about at the hottest party, scoping out the coeds, and you finally get the chance to talk to one of them; or you’re in the middle of the best beer pong game yet—or even worse, you’re finally comfortable on the float in the pool, drink in hand. Suddenly— wait, wait, wait! “I gotta pee!” Why now? Don’t break the seal! Well here’s what happens: The seemingly overactive bladder issue is due to the inhibition of the antidiuretic hormone (ADH) or vasopressin. Without vasopressin, the kidneys send water directly to the bladder instead of reabsorbing it into the body. Alcohol makes ADH less effective in your body, causing you to urinate more frequently, ultimately increasing your probability of dehydration and a nasty hangover. So drink in moderation and stay hydrated (with water that is). That way you won’t miss out on the party.
aXis: What do you do to stay fit? Haleigh: CrossFit! Strength training, cardio, total body movements. CrossFit covers all of these and more. It is my new favorite obsession. I also run from October to about May before it gets too hot, setting goals with distance, finished 2 half-marathons in the past year!
aXis: Favorite cheat meal? Haleigh: A giant cheesburger!
HALEIGH FANKBONER
aXis: Workout staple? Haleigh: Good music. I cannot get through a workout without some serious hard-core tunes.
