Our Lady Peace is a well-accomplished Canadian rock band first breaking in the post grunge ’90s. Their earlier albums contain a unique sound with higher pitched vocals considered to be a bit unpredictable. Within the last year the band has put out multiple new singles, gone through a major member change, and have announced a 9th studio album.

ORLANDO UNIVERSAL CITYWALK®

If you couldn’t play music, what would you turn too? We live very close to this charity called War Child in Canada and I would probably do something with them. I’ve been in the field and we built some schools in the Congo. Just being in that culture puts a lot of meaning and depth into life. The fact that you’re giving back is important because most people these days are just taking. After twenty years as a band, what are some of the things that you all still feel you need to accomplish as Our Lady Peace? I think just in general, we are always trying to get a little bit better, personally or musician wise. We’ve never been a band that tries to repeat what it’s done in the past. It’s all about growth and curiosity. Whether it’s intellectually or musically or personally, it’s that arc of growth.

who: SUBLIME w/ Rome where: Hard Rock Live when: Sat, Nov 21st • 7:30pm info: HardRockLive.com @HardRockLiveORL

Congrats on Sirens, another evolution of the Sublime sound with you Rome out front? I think that with this record, it took a little time, but subconsciously we had gathered up so much music and cool ideas that when it came down to doing the record, we didn’t necessarily think we had to follow up [our debut] Yours Truly or write something as iconic as [Sublime’s 1992 debut] 40oz. To Freedom. It was more like, “We just need to write some music, man!” We were itching. It was like a mosquito bite that needed to be scratched. Where does the songwriting draw from? I read a lot. I like to apply everything I learn—through experience, or literature—to what I create. Simple songs are my favorite songs. They don’t have to be very intricate; they just have to strike up feelings, and I think a lot of that comes from the way I was brought up.

#THISISHARDROCK

Favorite part about getting back on the road? It sounds super cheesy but the show is the most enjoyable part of touring—literally that hour and a half onstage when you’re just jamming. It’s you and your friends and you’re just playing your favorite music. And you look out in the audience and there are thousands of people doing the same fucking thing.

How has your mindset changed since a long time member has left the group? For anybody that’s been in a relationship for a long time, sometimes change can give you a new perspective. I think for us, that idea is pretty important. As sad as it is to say goodbye to Jeremy, what it does is make you re-think things and look at things closer. Jeremy started in this band when he was really young, so he deserves the chance to go do different things.

The godfather’s of chilled out skunk (ska punk for those young uns) are returning to their East Coast home away from home at the Hard Rock Live just before TDay. With only a handful of albums and EP’s to their credit, the original two members, drummer Bud Gaugh and bassist Eric Wilson welcome Rome back for another record and tour, keeping the Sublime torch burning for another round.

The Ghosts of Homecoming Past

(5 Lessons We’ve Learned from UCF Over the Years) They say there are two types of people in the world: those who think the glass is half-full and those who think it’s half-empty. I’d argue today, though, that there’s a third type of person: UCF football fans who have chugged the glass, refilled it a few dozen times, and then smashed it against the wall with the nuclear rage of a billion suns. My point is that it’s not exactly the best time to be a fan, with the team currently sitting at a bleak 0-4 (possibly 0-5 by the time you read this, but hopefully 1-4) and a starting roster so young that these players can’t even get a beer at a UCF bar. I know, I know… but please continue reading when you’re done hysterically laughing. Sadly, this feeling isn’t new to us. After all, George O’Leary’s first season at UCF was memorable for all the wrong reasons, as the GOL Ball Coach’s squad lost every game that year. It was the first and only winless season in UCF history, and we’ve all assumed it would be the last because this program has become stronger and better over the years. Except, today, even the cockiest bros among us have turned into Chicken Littles, believing that the sky is falling and the season is lost, a 0-12 finish almost certainly becoming a reality as soon as those nasty USF Bulls have their way with us on Nov. 26. It’s hard not to think that way, because we’ve seen little progress in the team’s four losses, short of holding the lead over South Carolina until the Gamecocks realized who they were playing. Our elders have always taught us that we learn from history, and while UCF doesn’t have the richest football legacy, we still have a few things to remember when we all sit down for Homecoming dinner to give thanks to what little we’ve been given in our Knight lives. And it starts with a lesson that O’Leary taught us when he took the gig… 1) The cupboard is eventually at least partially stocked. When O’Leary took over for Mike Kruczek so long ago, he remarked that the cupboard was empty, and basically threw the previous regime under the bus for bad recruiting. In other words, Rome isn’t built a day, especially when Rome is a program at a directional university in a highly competitive state. In a perfect world, like the one that spoiled baby SEC fans live in, annual recruiting would fill holes and create depth. As we’ve seen this season, though, we’re not always that lucky. Between the injuries to Justin Holman and Jordan Akins, and the inexplicable release of Will Stanback, the Knights have too many holes, and now the offense is so inexperienced that O’Leary and Brent Key apparently have a playbook smaller than a Tecmo Bowl team. Yes, this certainly sucks, but sh*t happens. All we can hope for is that the young guys getting a chance to play gain some experience from it. 2) Young teams eventually become older teams. Regardless of the team’s final record this season, there’s a gold lining and it stems from the last point. Holman and Akins will eventually return, but all of the young guys stepping up for the time being will only get better from being thrown to the wolves this season. Hopefully that means more game smarts and confidence, which will translate to better performances next season. I know, I want this team to win NOW every season, but we have to face the hard truth – we simply might not ever be one of those teams, and we will have down years. 3) We’re never alone. If you want to look at this from my favorite perspective – the “Sucks for you, bro” mentality – there are always teams in a worse position than us. Even if the Knights finish 0-12 this season and people make fun of us all over the country because all we had was free beer, we’re still not one of those programs that loses every season. You know the programs, the ones whose fans act like ‘Bama boosters after they get six wins and an invite to the Drivetime Ring Around the Toilet Bowl. Some might argue that UCF falls into this category, but let’s not forget that we’re still FIESTA BOWL F*CKING CHAMPIONS, so bite me with that nonsense. UCF will bounce back from this season and the same sad fans of the same crappy programs will keep treing chunky brown water in the cess pool. And hopefully USF is with them, because you know those guys are loving this. 4) There’s still a conference title to win. I’m a pessimist, even in the brightest years. This program broke my spirit a long time ago, so I can’t trust that UCF will go on to win the Fiesta Bowl until I see it happen. That said, the Bad Fan Police (more on them in a second) are still loudly reminding people like me that the AAC record is 0-0. “We can still run the table in the conference and salvage this season,” they’ll say in the most condescending way possible, and there’s a chance they’re right. I admire that optimism and hope they all keep it. I sure as hell don’t think it’s going to happen, but I’m glad someone does, and I’ll make sure to cheers them with the bourbon I’ve been sucking down all season when they prove me wrong. 5) You’re always a bad fan anyway. But really, all the Bad Fan Police want to do is think that they’re better than you and me, no matter how realistic we are. I say this having once been the Bad Fan Police Chief, but I retired from the force years ago when I realized how dumb it is to get so upset over sports. There’s no point in being upset or over-critical of this team anymore. Just have fun with it.Win or lose, bowl win or winless season, have fun with it and remember that it could always be worse. Unless UCF loses to USF, because there’s obviously nothing worse than that. more Black & Gold misery @MayorBurnsy
