who: Layla Brisbois Trio @ Winter Garden Music Festival where: Crooked Can Stage when: Saturday, Oct 9th • 4:45pm info: WinterGardenMusicFest.com She’s just a small town girl...but we have a feeling it’s not such a lonely world. Winter Garden’s own, Layla Brisbois has plenty of fans to keep her company. Her solo weekend stints at The Attic Door, blossomed into full fledge band performances, and soon recording sessions. Layla will be debuted her self-titled album the week of Winter Garden Music Fest, and celebrating with a few performances around town. aXis: You are hitting the heart of your hometown this month, what does it mean to play WGMF each year for your local following? Layla: This year is extra special to me only because so much has happened in the last year and I have so many incredible and supportive people who come to see me. I also have brand new original music to release and it’s always fun sharing that with everyone and getting their reactions. It’s hard to describe the feeling when you’re standing on the stage at the festival and looking at all the faces that come watch your gigs, buy your music, share your news, constantly support you. It’s overwhelming and so rewarding and even more so when it’s my hometown. aXis: You are playing Alive @5 for Church St, this has become Downtown’s happy hour, how do you mix it up for a drinking crowd, having played the pub circuit? Layla: I have played for later more rowdy crowds and I honestly love it. I find that the more people drink the more they enjoy singing along so I pick a lot of well known songs for my sets to get the crowd involved and get them dancing and feeling happy. Lots of 80’s and 90’s tunes seem to do the trick haha. I always get extra pumped too which makes for an awesome gig. aXis: New music just finished, what’s the vibe of the new tunes? Layla: Inspirational. Every single song on my album is personal to me, I wrote all of them from my own experience or hardships. The album is about being yourself, chasing your dreams, not caring what people think, and fighting for what you love. I’m really hoping that it speaks to people because that’s my goal in writing music, and these songs are all a little piece of my heart that I really want to share with the world. aXis: Someone asks you on the street what kind of music you play… you can answer in one sentence? Layla: As far as covers go... I’ll play you anything from Elvis to Taylor Swift. aXis: Performing as a female artist with a guitar, who are your inspirations? Layla: Shania Twain was my first favorite female artist, also my first concert. I can relate with her journey a bit, she came from humble beginnings, wrote all her own music, I love her. I also love P!nk because she is 100% herself and she rocks it and to me that’s so inspirational and such a good example for female artists to look up to. Of course I love me some T Swift too. She’s just so smart with this industry and an incredible songwriter.
