RED BULL GIVES YOU RAMP... YOU GIVE IT WINGS! CULTURE
WHO: Amateur Aviators & Daredevils WHAT: National Red Bull Flugtag Day WHERE: Miami WHEN: Sat, Sept 21st INFO: @redbullORL WHAT DOES FLUGTAG MEAN? Flugtag, which is pronounced FLOOG-TOG, means “flying day” in the German language. WHAT IS NATIONAL FLYING DAY? National Red Bull Flugtag day, the world’s wildest homemade, human-powered flying craft competition, will take place across the U.S. on Sept. 21, 2013. Red Bull Flugtag will take place simultaneously in five U.S. cities: Washington DC, Long Beach, Miami, Chicago and Dallas/Fort Worth. Never before have multiple cities in any country witnessed true aviation history on the same day. WHAT EXACTLY IS RED BULL FLUGTAG? At Red Bull Flugtag, teams of up to five people work for months building homemade, human-powered flying machines which one person pilots off of an elevated flight deck, through the air, and into a body of water. Teams are judged based on three criteria – flight distance, creativity and showmanship – by a panel of local and national celebrities. WHEN WILL THE MIAMI EVENT TAKE PLACE? National Red Bull Flugtag will take place in Miami on Sept. 21, 2013. It will be held at Bayfront Park. Hangars open at 12 p.m. The final flight will take off at approximately 4:30 and will be immediately followed by an awards ceremony. WHAT ARE THE RULES? All crafts must be human-powered - no engines or external energy sources allowed. Prefabricated crafts will not be accepted. Each craft must adhere to some basic dimension and weight restrictions and the pilots must be at least 18 years old. WHAT DO THE WINNERS GET? 1st Place: Team outing to skydive with expert free fliers, The Red Bull Air Force. 2nd Place: Team will experience a Red Bull-titled sporting event from the VIP area. 3rd Place: Team will be immersed in culture at a Red Bull-titled music, culture or art event. People’s Choice: Team will have a VIP experience, in a luxury suite, at a New York Red Bulls game.

SOUNDCHECK
iMAGiNE BREATHiNG FiRE imagine dragons take on arena rock at UCF WHO: IMAGINE DRAGONS WHERE: UCF ARENA WHEN: Mon, September 23rd INFO: TICKETMASTER.com After the last note played on the last song of a marathon set a few years ago, Dan Reynolds, frontman for Las Vegas based rockers Imagine Dragons, realized it was all starting to come together. “We were playing a gig at this place called O’Sheas, which has the cheapest beer on the strip,” Reynolds remembers. “I was basically standing on top of the drums, the stage was so small. We were on our final song of a six-hour set. I got to the end of the song and just fully passed out in the middle of singing. I came to, got up, finished the song, and we got a standing ovation from all these people at this tiny little casino at three am on a weekday in Vegas. Something about that moment bonded us and made us realize that we were building a connection with people from all over the country.” For Imagine Dragons that means the brutal honesty and power of straight-ahead rock and roll interwoven with innovative backbeats, basslines, and percussion. “We like making raw natural noises and keeping them raw and natural but transforming them into synthetic noises,” Sermon says. “We are gearheads. We do a lot of experimenting with percussion that’s electric and acoustic on top of each other.” Every band member except Reynolds attended Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music, and the technical skill and precision that comes with that education has impacted Imagine Dragons’ sound and process. “I’m a musician that goes by ear. And when you put those two types of people in a room together that’s when the magic happens,” say Reynolds. aXis: So you have spent the majority of the past two years on the road, what part of the set, or song stands out as the part of each night that keeps you going? Dan: Right now “Radioactive,” because it’s a really raw song. There is a lot of raw energy, and the crowd always kind of reacts in that way. It is a special song. There are a lot of instruments on stage. We are all playing different drums, it is a very percussive song. I grew up a child of urban radio, so I love very percussive music. aXis: What artist(s) inspired the writing on Night Visions and the band creative process overall? Dan: My favorite singer and songwriter is Harry Nelson. He wrote from the heart. His music was kind of a journal entry, and he was very close with The Beatles. Lyrically, I try to write from a very personal place. “Radioactive” was about the struggle that I had growing up with anxiety and depression, and how I rose above that and made myself empowered. The album Night Vision really runs the gamut of human emotion. There are some songs that are happy, and some songs that were written in low points. It’s just life. aXis: A lot of musicians and young artists read the mag, any advice for the next round? Dan: Stick it out. First of all, don’t do music if you want to do music, do music if you have to do it, because it is a hard career. But if it’s your everything, your passion, then do it. People will laugh at you when you tell that you are going to be a musician, and you can just smile, and say, “Thank you” [laughs], and stick it out. We stuck it out. We never said no to anything, and now four-years later, we are here. We are very lucky and fortunate, but if it’s your passion, do it. Absolutely. aXis: And not for the gratuitous ‘where did the name come from’ question? Dan: Our name is actually an anagram. Originally we had a word or phrase that had some meaning to the band, but we didn’t want to be known by a word or phrase. So, we jumbled up a bunch of letters and came up with “Imagine Dragons” and swore ourselves to secrecy about what it actually meant, and we’ve never told anybody what it means. We actually have people try to guess it all of the time, and there are some ridiculous things written about the possible combinations!

ON THE HISTORY// Back Booth has been bringing live music and events to Downtown Since 2000. I, along with my brother Adam, have been the owners now for 10 of those years. We take our mission very seriously when it comes to booking bands and artists in our venue, we also love providing a great atmosphere to host events and our dance parties. It actually began as a coffee house called JAVA JABBERS across from UCF, the name Back Booth actually refers to a booth that was in the back of Java Jabbers that many of us from back in the day used to sit at. It was turned into Back Booth as a Beer and Wine bar. Then moved Downtown in 2000 to become what it is today. We have had many fine moments over the years... Some of our FMF shows have been among them... it would be impossible list them all... a few would be... Paramore, KRS One, Zac Brown Band, Aloe Blacc, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Jucifer, Unknown Hinson, Helmet... too many. Also locals: Big 10-4, Band Marino, Gasoline Heart, Summerbirds in the Cellar, Baron Von Bear, Thomas Wynn and the Wynn Brothers, The Heathens, My Hotel Year, Precious, 7Mary3 recording their live acoustic album. I could go on and on. ON EXPANDING NON-LIVE MUSIC CONCEPTS// Well, it all started with CRUSH on monday nights... Which is now gone (though we will be doing CRUSH on special occasions) Now, we have FOOTLOOSE 80’s VIDEO PARTY, which is every Friday at Midnight. And of course are most popular night is MIDNIGHT MASS on Saturdays at, of course, Midnight.... It’s a mix of everything from indie dance to pop music to hip hop, it’s my favorite night. SHAKE N BASS on Sundays at 10pm has really taken off as well... it’s a Moombahton and Trap night, lots of fun. We also have a 90’s Video Night on Thursdays at Midnight. The reason a lot of our nights start at Midnight is so that we have room on the schedule to continue to book live music and special events on those days. We usually have shows or events before our dance nights. ON TRENDING THEMES// Electronic Dance Music has become a bit saturated in my opinion... I’m not against EDM or anything, I would just like to see more local people supporting songwriters and bands... artists who are a bit more traditional. There is so much good music out there to be had and explored. It is my hope that the community begins to check out more diverse forms of original music and that more members of our community would be creating it. I always look forward to seeing the arts and music community of our city growing. ON THE NEW DOWNTOWN AGE & HOUR LEGISLATION// Well, I’ve never been opposed to later hours, although I think it’s fair to say that the clubs may not really see more revenue from it, very likely just patrons coming out later than before... but I’m in with later hours over all. I think the age limitations can be limiting as to the possibilities of events in the city. For instance I do believe FMF every year is an important part of the community and I don’t know how events like FMF could be effected. Also, it seems clear to me that most of the Clubs and Bars downtown are already 21 and up. There are only a few of us that cater to 18 and up... and as I can tell, the few of us are pretty responsible about not serving under age... I know Back Booth is. But for us, it’s about shows... we will be unable to bring the talent like we have in the past under an ordinance that requires us to be 21 and up. But, I have faith that the people behind Destination Orlando are working to see these issues given the proper attention. I’m looking forward to seeing the solutions that are being worked out. ON THE FUTURE OF DOWNTOWN CULTURE// I believe the future is bright for live music in our city. I am looking forward to seeing more artists creating in our town and Back Booth will be here to support them. Also, every year, Orlando becomes a bigger and more important market for touring artists... we have seen this trend for many years now. So keep an eye out for great shows to come.

TING A G L I A T O T IDE OFFICIAL GU UCF Officia l Rules: CONDUCT
• Behavior: All fans are expected to be respectful to university property and all of the fans around them. Drunkenness, vandalism, obscene or harassing behavior and violence (or threats of violence) will not be tolerated and should be reported to the nearest law enforcement official. • Controlled substances: The unlawful possession, distribution or use of any drug or controlled substance is prohibited on the UCF campus. Violators of this policy shall be subject to the full measure of state and federal laws, city and county ordinances and university disciplinary action. • Gametime: All fans and tailgating participants are expected to clean up their trash. Trash receptacles and recycling containers are provided throughout the campus. UCF is an environmentally friendly campus and fully supports recycling efforts.
GEAR
• Propane cooking grills are highly recommended for tailgating. If using charcoal, carefully dispose of hot coals in designated barrels. All open flame cooking appliances must be a minimum of 10 feet away from any building, structure or overhang.
Unofficial Rules: CONDUCT
• You are not the QB, you can take your shirt off and throw the ball 40 yards into unknown crowds all day, but you will never be Blake Bortles and get to date hot aXis cover models. We are all for a casual toss if one hand is on a koozie, but please spare us your ‘I used to play back-up QB at Winter Springs High’ glory days, are better served in a parking lot at a Predator game. • Stay off the cell phone, especially when roaming the crowd. This is a great way to get run over by Charlie with the motorized cooler, or nailed with a football by the dude that used to play back-up QB at Winter Springs. You’re also going to desperately need that cell battery charged postgame, when totally wasted and roaming the UCF Arena parking garage with your pants at your ankles. • Quit counting your beers. We get it, you’re ‘so wasted man!’ But stacking your cheap beer cans in the corner of the tent proves you’re a party animal not. And no, once you’ve created your 12 pack pyramid, it doesn’t mean everyone wants to do a shot with you. • Gametime: Everyone leaves with a roadie. Be generous, you will not want that piss warm beer can swimming around in your cooler postgame anyways. Make sure your Tailgate team has ample refreshments to make the walk from Memory Mall to Brighthouse... Be a true host and encourage them to take it doublefisted to the House!
• Portable generators (1500 watts or less) are authorized in designated surface parking lots and tailgating areas. • Personal tents/canopies must be 10 x 10 feet or smaller. • Couches and indoor furniture are not permitted outdoors. • Kegs, glass containers and beer funnels are not authorized on campus. • No live bands or excessively loud, amplified sound systems are allowed on campus. • Sidewalks must be kept clear of tents, grills, furniture, speakers and other tailgating items at all times. For the safety of fans, power or extension cords cannot run across sidewalks. • Animals, except for service animals, are not allowed on campus on game day. Anyone who brings an animal that is not a service animal will be asked to take it home.

• You are not a great DJ, so please use your own interpretive music studies for your backyard cookout. Max, 1 Dubstup tune per 30 minutes, or maybe make that per 60 minutes, since no one here is on Molly, and that music really sucks when you aren’t totally tripping out of your mind or in your Crossfit Box. Oh ya, no one needs to hear the ZombieNation song either, unless jumping up and down because we went up two TD’s on the Gamecocks. • No body paint please. We appreciate your support of the Black & Gold, but you end up looking like a submerged Halloween marshmallow candy... Trust us Picasso, the heat and humidity will always win! • Ladies, feel free to wear team jerseys. In fact, feel free to cut them up, manipulate them, and turn them into your very own. Something about a female in a team uni that just screams of pillow fight at the ADPi sorority house slumber party!

BREWSCHOOL...
KEEPING YOU HIP TO THE hops
Brewgating pre and post Game with Erika of
World of Beer UCF
It’s tailgate season, that means lots of burgers, brauts and brews... so in order to leave some room for the grilled carcass, what style beer would you suggest? A style of beer that won’t fill you up is a ‘session’ beer. A ‘session’ beer is a beer that contains no higher than 5 percent ABV and features a balance between malt and hop characters and, usually, a clean finish. The purpose of a session beer is to allow you to have multiple beers, within a reasonable time period or ‘session’, without overwhelming your senses or getting too intoxicated. (Who knew you could enjoy beer and not get tanked?!) Historically, during WWI, workers were allowed up to 2 drinking “sessions” that lasted up to 4 hours. They preferred lighter beers that they could consume a good amount of during the short time period. Hmmm, booze and guns; My kind of party! Top three session beers:
• Sierra Nevada Kellerweiss. A Hefeweizen from California. Its ABV is 4.8%. It is An American Hefeweizen; the hazygolden Hefeweizen is deeply flavorful, refreshing and perfect for a sunny day tailgate.
• Full Sail Session Lager:
A pale lager from Oregon. Its ABV is 5.1%, not sweet and not bitter. Just good. Light bodied and crisp. • Terrapin Easy Rider: A sessionable IPA from Georgia. This 4.3% ABV IPA is one smooth character of a beer. It’s brewed with an abundance of Maris Otter malt and five different hops including Galaxy hops from Australia! This golden hued honey is laid back and free wheelin’. Some other tasty options for the tailgate? One of my favorite beers for tailgating is Oskar Blues Dale’s Pale Ale. This 12oz can of deliciousness is an American Pale Ale with a hoppy start, slight malt middle, and crisp clean hop finish. Coming in at 6.5%, after a 6 pack you won’t be so blitzed that you think it’s a great idea to go streaking across the football field.... Another one of my favorites for tailgating is New Belgium’s Fat Tire. This Amber Ale has toasty, biscuit like malt flavors and a hoppy freshness. It’s fairly new to the Florida market so if you forgot to wear your team’s jersey because you were too hungover, this beer should give you some street cred.
What goes with a burger or dog? Looking to pair your hamburgers and hotdogs with a beer? What’s more American than grilling out, football, and beer?! Try one of the most American beers out there: Sam Adams Boston Lager! This smooth lager has a clean start and a hoppy finish. It is full bodied with a rich amber color and a thick head of foam. Another beer perfectly paired with hotdogs and hamburger is Radeberger Pilsner. Pilsners are the ‘ultimate chameleon’ because of their clean, palate cleansing bitterness. And coming in at 4.8%, you can drink a bunch of them and not ‘that person who tailgated but couldn’t even make it to the game’. What brew is best for beer pong at the tailgate? The best beer for a beer bong would have to be Shipyard Light. It is a Light Lager from Maine with an ABV of 3.2%. It is a crisp, dry, light Ameirican style golden ale with only 97 calories! This would be most like a Miller Light, you get the point.

The 2013 Casual And/Or Lazy Sports Fan’s Guide to
FlorAinddaN’sCAA
courtesy of Ashley Burns
NFL ll Teams Footba
FSU – What I love about Seminoles fans is that every season, no matter what happened the season before, they think that this is their season. My Facebook feed is flooded with Seminoles fans - most of which didn’t even attend FSU - talking so much trash, and I admire the hell out of them for it. Mainly because they know deep down inside that they’ll be lucky to finish the season in the Top 15 with an Outback Bowl bid. In case you haven’t been keeping up with my sports betting predictions at my website, HandsomeGentleman.gov, I am always right when it comes to NFL and college football predictions. Now, some people will argue stupid, inconsequential details like “That website doesn’t exist” and “You don’t gamble” and “You don’t ever make any predictions anyway” and those people are just dicks. When it comes to scouting the state of Florida’s NFL and college football teams, nobody is better than I am, because I’m not biased and hate my own favorite teams as much as I hate the other teams. Just like last year, I’ve decided to devote this month’s column space to breaking down our pro and college teams and their respective chances this season, and you should all know that my forecast is bleak for everyone. Some teams are simply going to be a lot bleaker than others. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – I guess I’ll start with the Florida NFL team that will probably suck the least this year, the Tampa Bay Bucs. On paper, the Bucs should be pretty good. The problem is that in the NFC South, teams need to be “f*cking great” and “pretty good” is like being a female extra in a lesbian porn. Even the Carolina Panthers are good enough that they could win the division if Drew Brees or Matt Ryan is ever suspended for steroids. With the Bucs, Josh Freeman is the constant question mark because how can you put your faith in a guy who hangs out at Cleo’s and smokes Marlboro Reds? They might as well let me throw to Vincent Jackson. Miami Dolphins – Sure, he added Mike Wallace and Brandon Gibson, but what else has Jeff Ireland done to fix this 7-9 team? Is he hiring spies and henchmen to infiltrate the Jets and Bills to make sure they’re always worse? Because that’s basically the only thing the Dolphins have going for them. Tom Brady could have zero receivers and I’d still probably pick the Pats to take the AFC East. Jacksonville Jaguars – Here’s my big question about the Jags - when they suck year after year, people always assume that it’s because the team will be moved to L.A. or London, but why? Would a change of scenery suddenly make the Jags not suck? Because they’re f*cking awful. And it’s strange that they’re so bad, because they have great draft picks every year. What a mystery this team is.
UF – You know, a lot of people were giving Gators friends sh*t for them not showing up and filling the stadium for their first game of this season, and I think those people need to shut up. They were just practicing for when they’re inevitably out of the SEC Championship picture by mid-October. Miami – Someone recently told me that the Miami Hurricanes have the strongest, most devoted fan base in college football history. Needless to say, it was a reminder that this state’s meth problem is still out of control. That said, I, like most so-called Hurricanes fans, can’t even name three players on the current roster. USF – I’d love to make fun of the Bulls’ season opener loss to McNeese State forever, but I know that USF could be winless with no touchdowns scored on the entire season and the Bulls would still beat UCF. So I know to keep my mouth shut now. FAU – If I charged per word, I wouldn’t even earn a dollar writing about FAU. FIU – Hey, remember when FIU beat UCF and everyone was like, “Watch out, rest of college football!” Haha, that was a fun time.

Now what about those college teams? UCF – I’ll start with UCF, because everyone’s always like, “Hey, remember how much of an a-hole you used to be about UCF and how you were always like, ‘This team should be awesome every year and not just this one year on, one year off BS?’” Of course, I remember that like it was last week. Because it was last week and last year and five years ago. But I love Blake Bortles. He’s probably my favorite UCF QB since Daunte Culpepper. Hopefully, his receivers can hold on to the ball and I think the Knights can make a strong impact in the first season of whatever this new conference is named.
