PURITY RING House of Blues Sat, Sept 12th • 7:30pm HouseofBlues.com / @HOBOrlando
Purity Ring, although relatively new, have become the toast of the techno pop scene... crossing the border from Edmonton, Alberta. These two create quite the listening experience by meshing eerie synth and beautiful melodies combined with soothing vocals to overlap. Megan James and Corin Roddick have constructed a distinctive and critically acclaimed sound to call their own since the release of their first record Shrines. Their recent LP release Another Eternity is quickly gaining popularity and paving a path for the Pop Music of the future. aXis: So the name has a ring to it... sorry about that! But where did it originate? I thought it would be a good band name. I thought it would be a good vessel for the sound of the thing that we’re making. Just kind of the way it comes out of your mouth, the way it flows. I think band names are kind of silly in the first place, might as well have one that sounds nice. aXis: How would you explain the transformation from Shrines to Another Eternity? Shrines is under the covers, there’s a blanket over it. It’s claustrophobic in the sense that you’re in a cave, in the sense that you’re inside something. With Another Eternity there are no blankets! It’s cold and in the sky, in space. It’s still sleepy because I write about dreams, but with more unfamiliarity. aXis: Anything that contributed to the new writing process? I had just moved from the east coast of Canada, Halifax, where I’d lived for three years. One day I just thought, I have to go. And I packed up all my bags in my car and drove across the country. A lot of it is about leaving a thing that I thought I’d keep forever, a place like that, and restarting.
“Shrines is under the covers, there’s a blanket over it. It’s claustrophobic in the sense that you’re in a cave, in the sense that you’re inside something. With Another Eternity there are no blankets! It’s cold and in the sky, in space.” aXis: How did you feel about working on an album together this time rather than in separate cities? It was like starting a new band. The process and the flow were so different. But it was also how most bands work. I don’t think it was that unusual in general, just for us. We did it just because it made sense. It wasn’t something that we planned. This time we were able to build the songs up with more intent, in a way we were excited about in the end. aXis: Were there any specific artists you were listening to during the writing and recording process that influenced you? Honestly, not at all. I listen to variety of old music. I feel like the things I’ve listened to over the past couple of years don’t really have that much to do with what I wrote. It was more of an exploration of what we were doing next. We were creating the music we wanted to hear. - Chandler Thompson

THE INNOVATION LIST
aXis Magazine’s Annual list of Otown’s Innovators Disrupting & Constructing Your Digital Landscape... “Imagination is not only the uniquely human capacity to envision that which is not, and therefore the fount of all invention and innovation. In its arguably most transformative and revelatory capacity, it is the power to that enables us to empathize with humans whose experiences we have never shared.” J. K. Rowling
ORRETT G. DAVIS Orlando Tech Association | Executive Director Talk to us a little bit about the growth of Tech Week this year? We learned a lot for doing the first Orlando Tech Week and went back to the drawing board to determine how we can get more involvement from the community. We open sourced Orlando Tech Week, allowing community organizers to host their own events with OTA helping to secure venues, serving as a central base for communication. We moved from doing 8 events in the year before to doing more than 30 events, in 12 venues with 2500 attendees. Canvs still maintains itself as the hub of all things tech in Downtown, how has the dynamic evolved there? Canvs and the Church Street Exchange continue to be anchor points for downtowns tech scene. There is new life within The Exchange and its great to see the constant flow of traffic with PowerDMS, The Iron Yard, and PlanSource. There’s been a demand for company to be located within Canvs that they’ve recently announced an expansion expand and taken over an additional 3000sqft.
Starter Studio seems more active than ever, how pivotal have they been in accelerating the tech scene here? I think we are just starting to see the impact that Starter Studio can have on Orlando startup scene. There have already been a few wins with FattMerchant, Trobo, Edukate and others. With the addition of the FireSpring Fund and the ability to make seed investments in startups we’ll continue see more high growth companies start and stay in Orlando. The most innovative project that’s been circulating in Otown? Right now everyones attention is focused on Orlandoix (interactive tech festival) and on the FireSpring Fund (starter studio seed fund). I think both projects will have a profound impact on pushing the needle forward for Orlando’s startup and tech community. We often talk about the branding and perception issues that Orlando faces. Orlandoix will help to put Orlando in the forefront of peoples mind that there is tech in Orlando. Another issue often address is the lack of seed funding available to companies locally. FireSpring Fund aim to solve that and will offer up to $225K.
What’s the most innovative project recently that you wish you had thought of? I’m eagerly anticipating the launch of Shipt in Orlando - on demand grocery delivery. Coolest feature: they can deliver a Publix sub to your door. How do you see the scene growing over the next year? It’s only been a year and we’ve already seen significant growth in the startup community and I think the pace of that growth will only continue to grow from here. Three new coworking spaces have launched Canvs, Catalyst, and Factur. Two major tech festivals / conferences got started Orlando Tech Week and Orlandoix. The acquisitions of Codeschool( $36M) and Pentaho ($500m). The closing of Zynga Orlando only for FanDuel to come in and scope up those employees and create an orlando office. I’m sure there are a dozen more examples that I’m missing, but the community is expanding and Orlando is starting to take notice.

SCENE: THE INNOVATORS
@ECHOINTERACTION @CARLOSCARBONELL @FATTMERCHANT @SUNEERA921
CARLOS CARBONELL Echo Interaction Group | Founder
Why Orlando, why now? There is a confluence of factors. Word has indeed gotten out - Orlando is a good place to do business and to consider moving to. There is a lot more work to be done to enhance our brand, but that can’t be forced and it will happen organically as we continue to have successes in the area. What product or business would people in the tech community know you for? Echo Interaction Group, an intelligent custom mobile app development company. And also President of the Orlando Tech Association. Having talked with you a year ago about the tech scene, what exciting transformations have you witnessed since then? Since last year, the community continues to mature, grow and learn together. There is less talk about being the next Silicon Valley, and we are developing our identity. We are a collaborative community and more leaders, founders and connectors are in the scene. We are on our way to having a critical mass of grassroots events and meetups to educate, connect and showcase product and businesses. Between co-working space, a more established Orlando Tech Association, the tech cluster downtown, and dozens of new businesses with a tech focus, the impact is definitely felt. Local government is also well-engaged and has definitely put their money where their mouth is - with continuing to fund OTA, and Orange County voting to fund a new startup fund, Firespring Fund, which will help local startups with seed money and guidance. What part of your studies or earlier business endeavors helped you to land or develop this role? Although I have a unique combination of both engineering and communications educational background, I think leading teams early on, and business development, helped me be able to begin a company. The basis of entrepreneurship is communications and leadership, so those are the most important qualities which have helped me get to where I am. One idea that you can divulge that you or someone in your circle has developed? We are developing some pretty complex and interesting technology for some of our clients and are under NDA for most - we are an intelligent outsourced team partnering with amazing companies. We had a concept for a spin-off last year which we sunset and have started on another concept with a niche demographic, leveraging my multicultural background. Recent innovation in Central Florida that has helped the Otown tech community? I still think that Orlando Tech Association and Canvs have been transformational to our community. Nothing else recently comes close. How do you see Orlando’s tech community in 5 years? It’s hard to predict, but hopefully, its so well-integrated that there is no need to fragment it out as a siloed niche. The largest companies in the area could have at one point be considered tech startups and are now more established companies with larger revenues and employee-bases. The term tech business in itself is undefined and we use it for both startups that have some sort of tech focus, to e-commerce concepts, to “businesses” that happen to leverage technology. That in itself does not make a tech company. We will hopefully, be known for some specific innovation and applied scientific knowledge which solves a specific problem - and which perhaps is congruent with talent or an industry only found here (maybe it’s tourism, travel or entertainment related because after all we are the home to largest entertainment brands in the world and most popular tourist destination in America). What are you listening to while working these days? The chatter of my team working hard.
SUNEERA MADHANI Fattmerchant | Founder
Why Orlando, why now? For Fattmerchant, Orlando has always been the only place to be. My Co-Founder and I grew up in Dr. Phillips so we were familiar with the area. We both graduated from U.F. but found ourselves back in Orlando because we’ve seen an amazing evolution for commerce. We started getting involved within the Orlando Tech community and met tons of brilliant, inspiring, and straight up fun people that were all very supportive. It became a no-brainer that Orlando was where we wanted to be. Now that we’ve been here for a couple of years, we’ve continued to get the devoted support from everyone within the community and plan on staying so we can contribute to the growing economy here and help support the development of new startups as well. What product or business would people in the tech community know you for? I am the CEO and founder of Fattmerchant, the most badass payment technology company that offers credit processing at direct cost as well as our own proprietary technology. Although, credit for our virtual terminal definitely goes to our amazing tech team who brought the entire thing to life! What part of your studies or earlier business endeavors helped you to land or develop this role? Before Fattmerchant, I worked with other merchant services providers in the payments industry for several years. It was there that I saw just how short the merchant’s end of the stick was. When it came to signing up for a merchant account, SMB’s never knew what to expect. They would get slammed with high percentage markups, hefty ancillary fees, little if any customer support, and contracts handcuffing them to it all. I saw how desperately the industry was in need of transparency and service and that’s how the idea for Fattmerchant was developed. For a flat monthly membership, merchants get access to the direct cost of processing, no matter what their size, and always know what to expect. They pay no markups, no ancillary fees, and are never locked into a contract. We save our members an average of 40% on their processing while providing them equipment or software for free along with “the best damn service”.
One idea not in your circle you wish you had been the one to think of? Can be anything intergalactically? I absolutely love the company Limbetless. Limbetless is a non-profit organization that uses technology to create and donate 3-d printed prosthetics to young kids. It was started by UCF engineering students and is still based out of Orlando while working with people all over the world. It is such a innovative and compassionate concept and it is the ideal organization to represent our community. I love the passion and imagination beyond the concept; it makes prosthetics fun for kids. I love this idea, and I love philanthropy so I am so inspired by its outreach. Best new recent innovation in Central Florida that has helped to propel the Otown tech community? The Canvs space and Starter Studio accelerator. Although most all of us in Orlando are aware of them, both are newer to Central Florida and are huge catalysts for innovation, technology, and business. From them birthed the FireSpring Fund which will continue to drive new businesses to Orlando and I think this will dramatically assist our growth as a tech hub. How do you see Orlando’s tech community in 5 years? Orlando Mayor, Buddy Dyer, referenced the other day that within the next 5 years Orlando can and will be the next Silicon Valley, and I agree. We’re going to continue to see a boom in the technology and startups and commerce in general within Central Florida. What are you listening to while working these days? Our Apple TV is always playing music at work and we listen to different stations everyday. Whether it’s throwback music, Britney Spears, Drake radio, we listen to it all. But If I ever need to get pumped up I put on Roar by Katy Perry. It’s a powerful song..super motivating and gets me ready for #PaymentWorldDomination!
One idea that you can divulge that you or someone in your circle has developed recently that is exciting as hell!? A Fattmerchant open-face API. Our technology team is amazing, they are so talented and just overall great people. They are finishing development on our API so we can continue to expand our reach, and compete with the likes of Stripe and Braintree - this way, companies get their software with our rates, which is always 0% markup unlike the other guys.

@NETCONVERSION @ORLANDOMAGIC @JACKCELKINS
JACK ELKINS Orlando Magic | Business Innovations Why Orlando, why now? For me, this answer is easy. Orlando is embracing the new. This includes the shift we see towards entrepreneurialism and the different ways companies are collaboratively innovating. We have development and tech talent needed to do great things. I was born and raised here. My family is here. So for me, I am excited the things I love come together here. What product or business would people in the tech community know you for? Downtown Credo, the Orlando Magic, and sports and tech innovation in general. The other circles I spend time in include the Sport and Entertainment Tech meetup group, OrlandoiX, Downtown Credo’s Rally Makers, Sports2Change, and the very talented, growing group of innovation colleagues in Orlando. What part of your studies or earlier business endeavors helped you to land or develop this role? I study more than I ever did in school. What helps me in my role is continuous learning and trying new things. I learn a lot through participation in our growing social enterprise and tech ecosystems. One idea that you can divulge that you or someone in your circle has developed recently that is exciting as hell!? I am excited about Downtown Credo’s Rally Makers. The Rally Makers give financial and mentor support to local social enterprises. These companies have an earned income stream but serve a social purpose - they have game changing potential. One idea not in your circle you wish you had been the one to think of? Can be anything intergalactically? Best new recent innovation in Central Florida that has helped to propel the Otown tech community? Our growing co-working spaces! We cannot undervalue spaces giving people in the ecosystem places to gather. Innovation is possible when curious minds come together. How do you see Orlando’s tech community 5 years from now? I believe tech will still be one of the top two economic drivers of Orlando but lots of other regions will be focused on tech as well. One of our differentiators may be that Orlando will grow as a destination for tech entrepreneurs who have already succeeded (exited) in other markets partly because of our tax benefits, our family atmosphere and software development talent. What are you listening to while working these days? I listen to podcasts, my favorite authors and an eclectic mix while in the lab - anything from Jock Jams to Foster the People.
RYAN FITZGERALD / FRANK VERTOLLI Net conversion | Founders Why Orlando, why now? Cost of living is a huge factor, and the fact that UCF is one of the largest universities in the country to pull young talent from. What product or business would people in the tech community know you for? Online Advertising & Analytics or a promo company since we make so many tshirts and hats with our logo on them. What part of your studies or earlier business endeavors helped you to develop this role? Contacts with the travel industry. Myself and my business partner spent our entire career working for Disney, Delta, and Universal Orlando. The people we worked with at those companies have been our biggest advocates and clients since we opened the agency. One exciting idea that you can divulge that someone in your circle has developed recently? Heard a rumor about a hover board that supposed to come out, by some startup called Doc Brown. One idea not in your circle you wish you had been the one to think of? The suitsy https://www.betabrand.com/mens-business-suit-onesie-hybrid.html (and yes I bought one) Best new innovation in Central Florida that helped to propel the Otown tech community? The expansion of available co-working space helps tech startups scale relatively quickly without huge financial lease commitments. When we started in 2007, they were practically no co-working spaces available, which hindered our ability to grow early on. How do you see Orlando’s tech community 5 years from now? Continuing to grow and I think some of the startups today will be much larger and compete with some of the most established companies in Orlando.

@UNIVERSALORL @CODESCHOOL @GREGGPOLLACK
MICHAEL MOLINARI Universal Orlando | Strategic Innovation & Emerging Technology Why Orlando, why now?
This is the best time to be here in Orlando. It’s a city on the way up - there’s a lot going on today with the promise of so much more in the near future. I came to Orlando five years ago almost by accident thinking I’d spend a few years here and then move on. But I’ve fallen in love with the city and now it’s hard to imagine leaving with so much in front of me here.
What product or business would people in the tech community know you for? People know me more for my role in Strategic Innovation & Emerging Technology at Universal Orlando more than for any specific products or technologies. But I’m working on some really cool projects and hopefully that will change in the not-toodistant future.
What part of your studies or earlier business endeavors helped you to land or develop this role?
GREGG POLLACK Code School | Founder Why Orlando, why now? Because it’s where I live. What product or business would people in the tech community know you for? Most people know me for CodeSchool.com, where we teach programming online in the most effective way we know how. What part of your studies or earlier business endeavors helped you to land or develop this role? As a developer early in my career I realized that I really enjoyed taking technical topics and making them easy to understand. I really loved writing blog posts, podcasting, screencasting, and speaking at conferences. One idea that you can divulge that you or someone in your circle has developed recently that is exciting as hell!? Thomas Meeks, Dan Bickford, Olivier Lacan, and John D. Jamison recently figured out how to teach the linux command line interactively in the browser. I’m stoked to figure out how we can continue to develop this at Code School. One idea not in your circle you wish you had been the one to think of? Can be anything intergalactically? The MP3 Experiment. Best new recent innovation in Central Florida that has helped to propel the Otown tech community? The Orlando Tech Association. How do you see Orlando’s tech community 5 years from now? Bigger. What are you listening to while working these days? Songs recommended to me on Spotify.
I had a somewhat meandering career path where I went in some different directions: engineering, software development, consulting, I spent 2-3 years at the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office as a Patent Examiner, I did a start-up, I even spent time in grad school in Italy working in the woodworking industry. The common threads were that I was always working with new emerging technologies and that I always had roles that were more than just being a technologist - I wore a lot of different hats and it has really paid off. I would also say that I spent the first 15-20 years of my career trying to build up my ability to go after my dream job even though I wasn’t sure what that dream job would be. Now I have my dream job and all of that work was worth it - it prepared me not only to get my current job but also to succeed and to have a future doing this. Innovation has become a career path in itself - it is a real discipline and companies are increasingly establishing innovation functions to tackle it. I was lucky that what I have always wanted to do and what I have prepared myself to do is becoming mainstream.
One idea that you can divulge that you or someone in your circle has developed recently that is exciting as hell!? I have a friend in Orlando - Anil Rohatgi - that has developed some really cool technology for doing augmented reality (AR) over video. It has some very cool potential applications for interactive content, second screen television or over-the-top video viewing. You can get more info on his website www.augotv.com.
One idea not in your circle you wish you had been the one to think of? Can be anything intergalactically?
It might seem obvious now, but iOS and the mobile app ecosystem. I remember having a Palm Pilot and thinking how much potential there was for mobile computing and I knew at the time that the Palm Pilot itself wasn’t the solution but that something would be. Apple nailed it with a simple OS and an app ecosystem that lets them - and Apple users and app developers - benefit from the work of millions of developers around the world and created billions of dollars of value in the process. Any time you build something that seems so obvious in hindsight - but was anything but obvious beforehand - you know you’ve created something amazing.
Best new recent innovation in Central Florida that has helped to propel the Otown tech community? I don’t know that it’s a specific technology but I think the biggest changes have been building out the culture of technology innovation and the space and opportunities to do it. The Meetup culture here is big. I think Canvs provides great incubator space downtown. And the culture here is attracting young ambitious professionals with great ideas and creating an ecosystem where they can bring those ideas to fruition. I don’t know which products or technologies specifically will emerge - nobody does - but when they do we’ll look back at the building blocks that were put in place to help make it possible and realize how important they were to the outcome.
How do you see Orlando’s tech community in 5 years?
I think the pieces are in place for Orlando’s tech community to take off. I see Orlando emerging nationally by building on the technology expertise that already exists here - the modeling & simulation market here, the video game industry with EA and Full Sail here. The theme park industry is taking off and pushing the cutting edge of immersive themed entertainment. The pieces are all here and I think that will Orlando will establish a reputation as the place to be for people who want to build the future of those technologies. These are exciting times for the city of Orlando.
What are you listening to while working these days?
I have a long commute now so I do a lot of podcasting. My favorite is Hardcore History by Dan Carlin. I also listen to Pardon the Interruption (PTI) to get my daily sports update and the TED Radio Hour for insights and inspiration.

BALLS: FLORIDA GRIDIRON
@MIAMIDOLPHINS @TBBUCCANEERS @JAGUARS
SPECIAL SUNSHINE STATE
by Ashley Burns • @MayorBurnsy
NFL PREVIEW!
MIAMI DOLPHINS
TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS
JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS
Miami Dolphins Projected: 9-7
Tampa Bay Buccaneers Projected: 6-10
Jacksonville Jaguars Projected: 16-0
The Dolphins are, of course, the team that I have hitched my wagon to through better or worse, and you know what? I can’t even believe I’m saying this, but I think it’s finally for better this year! I know, I can’t believe it either, but for once in the past 30 years there’s something to be proud of in Miami.What sucks is that means that the d-bag fans down at Joe Robbie Stadium are going to be worse than ever, but it’s worth it because 1) I won’t ever go to a game there again anyway after almost being stabbed and trampled a few years ago, and B) I’m getting pretty darn tired of the Dolphins sucking, fam.
This could be a really good season for Bucs fans, as they finally have a quarterback that they can be proud of.Well, on the field, of course, because off the field Jamies Winston makes decisions like a, well, 21-year-old. But he’s a super talented 21-year-old with the potential to make a ton of money in his career, so we judge him a little harsher than those of us who get blackout drunk and yell, “Fuck her right in the pussy!” Also, stop yelling that already, idiots. It was never funny.
And then there are the Jaguars, retooled and refocused on the task of fulfilling Blake Bortles’ destiny to be the greatest QB in NFL history. Last season, as I masterfully predicted, Bortles had some growing pains and actually led the NFL in interceptions. What’s amazing is that it will be the first and only time that he records double digit INTs during his career, because he’s going to turn into Peyton Manning in front of our eyes this season, except he won’t be a legendary choke artist.
That said, I expect two things to happen with the Dolphins this season, starting with Ryan Tannehill passing for 5,000 yards while setting an NFL record for the shortest yards-per-pass percentage. Seriously, he could average less than 10-yards per pass, but that’s fine because they gave him the offense to do that with. No more will we have to cringe and laugh nervously as he heaves a bomb to Mike Wallace, only to have it fall 30-yards short. Now he can lean on Kenny Stills, Jarvis Landry, and Jordan Cameron to move the chains 10-yards at a time and IT WILL WORK. The second thing is Lamar Miller finally becoming a star. Every damn year, fantasy football experts think he’s going to have a breakout season, and he underwhelms us all (despite being a Top 10 RB last year). This is the year, pals, that little old Lamar takes advantage of Tannehill’s MVP-worthy season and shakes and bakes for 1,500 yards and 15 touchdowns. Laugh all you want, but the years of 8-8 records are over!
That said, if Winston can grow up just a little bit – he should still enjoy being a 20-something millionaire because that’s pretty awesome – and learn how to throw the ball in the general direction of Mike Evans,Vincent Jackson, and Austin Seferian-Jenkins, he should be a pretty damn good NFL QB. So, as far as the passing game is concerned, the Bucs might be above average to great this season, but I think the running game is going to make defenses pee their pants. Specifically, I love when a talented-but-oft-injured RB is in a contract year, because that typically means that he’s going to bust his ass and put on a show. Enter: The Muscle Hampster. Doug Martin isn’t just fighting for his starting job against Charles Sims. He’s also fighting for a nice payday. That’s always the primary motivator.
Prediction: 9-7!!! YOU READ THAT RIGHT! 9-7 AND A WILD CARD As far as defense… I don’t really know much about the Bucs BERTH, SUCKAS!!! defense this season, so let’s just say they’ll be average.That’s probably just as accurate as anything those knobs at Pro Football Talk Suggested Roadtrip: will write.
Sun, Jan 3rd vs Patriots • 1pm
Prediction: 6-10, with Winston leading the NFL in interceptions and your asshole friend Dave leading in awful crab leg jokes. HAHAHAHA he stole some shit from Publix, we get it. I don’t even like FSU and I’m tired of the jokes, Dave.
Suggested Roadtrip: Sun, Nov 15th vs Cowboys • 1pm
Instead, my man Bort’s dynasty begins and the Jags will forever change the way that we watch football. Gone will be the days of watching the Patriots and Seahawks set the gold standard, and poor Andrew Luck on the verge of superstardom, he’ll always be second prize in a beauty contest. That’s because Bortles is going to put up numbers that we’ve never seen, starting with 6,000 yards and 73 touchdowns this season.That’s on top of his 1,000 rushing yards and 15 TDs. Laugh all you want, but the time is nigh… MORTAL MEN AND WOMEN MUST ACCEPT THE SEASON OF BORT AND YE ALL WHO REFUSE YOUR FOOTBALL SAVIOR SHALL CHOKE TO DEATH ON THE DIAPERS OF YOUR UNBORN. So sayeth the Book of Bort. Prediction: 16-0, a perfect season and postseason, a Super Bowl victory, and possibly the collapse of the NFL from the sheer awesomeness of one man.
Suggested Roadtrip: Sun, Dec 13th vs Colts • 1pm
