There’s a sound that hasn’t been heard on country radio in quite some time – the sound of organic, three-part female harmonies, ringing strings and stories that speak the language of modern women everywhere. It’s a sound that was the backbone of a little group known as The Dixie Chicks, and now it’s making a comeback through a vocal trio called Runaway June. Lead singer and guitarist Naomi Cooke grew up in Florida enchanted with the other-worldly vocals of Alison Krauss, then made her way to a stage in Nashville’s world-famous Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge. Singer and mandolin picker Hannah Mulholland was raised in Malibu, Calif., a nature-loving hippie chick who latched on to the liberating messages of Sheryl Crow and began writing her own music at 6 years old. And singer/guitarist Jennifer Wayne – another California native – is a Garth Brooks lover so dedicated to country music she gave up a pro tennis career to write songs in Nashville (like Eric Paslay’s “She Don’t Love You”), and happens to be the granddaughter of Hollywood legend John Wayne. Each of these talented young ladies were unsurprisingly Dixie Chicks fans, and each could have been a solo artist in her own right. But after forming a friendship and discovering their shared love for acoustic soul, soaring vocals and do-it-yourself positivity, Runaway June was born – a name that nods to their common bonds. Both Jennifer’s grandmother and one of Naomi’s sisters are named June, and Hannah completed a life-changing 25-day, 220-mile hike in the month of June. Plus, they all felt pulled to “run away” from their homes and toward their dreams. “I grew up in choirs singing low harmony, Jen naturally sings high harmony and Naomi has this perfect mid-range voice,” Hannah explains, surrounded by her bandmates in a Music Row conference room. “If we all switched positions, it wouldn’t be the same.” Just as impressive is their musicianship, a modern twist on a way-back sound that sets Runaway June apart from the pack as a true, self-contained band. “We’ve always had a Western feel to the music in some way, and kind of a cowboy feel,” Jennifer says. “But not rhinestone-y — rough and leather-y.” “Our brand of music is tied to country’s roots in that it’s all real instruments and real sounds,” Hannah adds. “But I feel like we have a modern take on it lyrically.” Indeed, as strong women who are not afraid to take risks in achieving their goals, empowerment is a recurring theme for Runaway June – and not just female empowerment. “We want to be including,” says Naomi. “We want to sing to everybody, so we steer away from being super negative to either gender.” “We don’t do man-bashing songs,” Jennifer clarifies with a laugh. In a time when female voices have been squeezed into a few narrow categories at country radio – the bad girls, the good girls, the crusaders – Runaway June want to break the mold. They know women’s lives are far more diverse, and even though their sound is rooted in the past, their stories are very much of the here and now. “You won’t hear a lot of synthetic anything in our music,” says Naomi, “but we’re modern women living in a modern world, so what we say and what we want to write and sound like is modern, without even trying.” Continues Jennifer, “Everything we write is what we know – it’s from the heart.” Case in point is Runaway June’s debut single “Lipstick” – a breakup song that’s actually upbeat and positive. Its central idea is that sometimes breakups ARE for the best, and that a girl should be with someone who ruins her lipstick, not her mascara. But holding true to their promise not to be man-bashers, the girls barely even mention the heartbreaker in the story, instead focusing on the good guy who’s still out there. “It’s not preachy,” says Naomi. “But it’s something I would want to say to my little sisters.” With their high-voltage harmonies kicking the song off, “Lipstick” (produced by Mickey Jack Cones) is the perfect intro to this new group. “It’s like ‘Here we are! We’re a vocal trio. It’s gonna be harmonies,’ ” says Jennifer. “For some reason, whatever we have together really works. I feel like what I’m lacking they have and what they’re lacking I have. We’re great individually, but we’re the best together.”

BLEACHERS: GONE NOW ERA- PART 1

The HOUSE OF BLUES ORLANDO turns Twenty... aXis: Music is also extremely cyclical, the old boss is the new boss! What are some of the things you’ve seen come back around over the years on the tour and artist sides? Jim Mallonee: For ages I have thought that 20 years or so from an act being popular in the mainstream is when the nostalgia is at its highest. Remember Happy Days in the 70s? They were nostalgic for the 50s. In the 90s it was all about the 70s and after the Millennia it was about the 80s. NOW…we are seeing a huge uptick in 90s bands. The more things change…the more they stay the same. Bruno Mars (who has graced our stage at HOB) said it best in an interview this year. He was asked… ‘People compare you with James Brown, Michael Jackson and Prince’ His response was ‘And what is wrong with that?’ FABULOUS comeback! A guy like that appeals to literally 3 decades of fans. aXis: Top 3 worst agents on the planet… go! Jim Mallonee: One in LA… one in NYC and one in Nashville.

We all have a live music moment. It could be that time you met your girlfriend singing along to The Black Keys, or met your future husband moshing to Flogging Molly, or reconnected with an old friend while pounding shots to The Supervillains. We also have those pre, post and neverending selfie moments, as one of a thousand faces in a crowd lit up in front of a stage holding a past, present or neverending legendary artist like Gwen Stefani, Outkast, John Fogerty, Bruno Mars, Pearl Jam and so many more. These moments happened at the House of Blues Orlando, and they didn’t just happen by chance. A group of music lovers came together to open the doors back in September of 1997, hosting Cypress Hill and locals MT Minds on the brand spanking new stage, which would take the blunt of many a low spark of high heeled boys, axe handles and mic stands. This group including the behind the scenes talent agents, production coordinators and front of house bar and restaurant managers. They’ve added a many integral music junkies to the team through the years, and continue to be lauded as one of the top live music venues in America and the world, according to Pollstar, Billboard among others. So we have these people to thank for these scenes we continue to share with our friends via social media, old photo albums and sometimes just drunken oneupmanship on ‘I saw the greatest show ever’ and ‘I was there when they played...” We singled out the leader of that crew of music enthusiasts, and the man responsible for curating those moments and experiences that define our cultural persona. Sr. VP, Southeast of House of Blues Entertainment, and fortunately a great friend and all around great music guy, Jim Mallonee, sat with us to reminisce a little about the past two decades. aXis: Two decades of literally running the show at HOB. The music world is well known for changing generationally, but what trends have you seen change drastically from the backstage dynamic from the mid 90s to the mid teens? Backstage? Jim Mallonee: All about the same really…maybe more of a business now. MUCH more secure now with the times being what they are. aXis: Now for out front of house, what has really been the major adjustments you’ve dealt with from the tours to prepare for the show from day one to now? Jim Mallonee: Agents, Managers and Artists seem more amenable to VIP, meet and greets…anything that will generate revenue. Performing live is the main source of revenue for all Artists now. 20 years ago an act would tour to support an album release. Present day, an act releases a record to support a tour. Total flip-flop from 10-15 years ago.

aXis: Ok, enough logistics, what bands have actually been just plain fun and enjoyable to work with? And why? Jim Mallonee: Plain fun? Heck..The Flaming Lips may be the most fun act in history. 700 BIG balloons. Unicorn rides, Confetti to the max….you just sit back and smile for 2 hours with these guys! aXis: What does a band or tour do to make your day easier? What about making your day just plain difficult? Jim Mallonee: Bands that worry about the RIGHT things make our day easier…putting on a good show, concerned about the fan experience etc. Actually…most Artists do worry about the right things. Of course a few acts are more worried about ‘Did you buy that Bulgarian Yogurt that was on our rider and is only sold in 2 stores in the USA?’. What a pain. I had one Artist that demanded that we cut off the AC in the middle of July when it was 95 degrees or she wouldn’t play that night. When she hit the stage first thing she said was ‘Why has HOB made it SO hot in here?’ Urggg! That was nothing but fun to deal with. aXis: HOB has hosted everything from Pearl Jam to Skrillex to Fallout Boy to Dropkick Murphy’s. What crowd has been the most difficult from moshpits to fans just not wanting to let the bus leave at night? Jim Mallonee: Halsey, Ed Sheeran, N’Sync, Backstreet Boys, Slipknot, Van Halen and No Doubt come to mind. Their fan bases were pretty dedicated. aXis: Strokes climbing around on balconies, Cypress Hill almost setting off smoke alarms, Janes, Pearl Jam playing legendary set lists, what is your top 3 favorite moments in the club? Jim Mallonee: One of them is when the Foo Fighters lit up the room. They had booked a show here that was in conjunction with a benefit they were playing in Miami for one of Dave Grohl’s friends. I was stunned we had confirmed a show with FF….massive underplay for them. We sold out right after the on sale. About a week from the show…I learned that the benefit was not going to happen. I understandably knew our date would be cancelled because the whole reason we got the show was the
