8 NO NO: A DOCKUMENTARY SPORTS RELEASES FRI, SEP 05
On June 12, 1970, Dock Ellis threw a no-hitter for the Pittsburgh Pirates - on LSD. In 137 years of organized professional baseball, it’s the only no-hitter of its kind. Dock was often embroiled in controversy on and off the field. While professional baseball hadn’t fully embraced racial equality, he was an outspoken leader who lived the expression ‘Black is Beautiful!’ His fearlessness enabled him to become one of the most intimidating pitchers of the 70’s and a trailblazer for a new wave of civil rights. After retiring, Dock became as outspoken about his career-spanning substance abuse issues as he had been about intolerance. He spent decades utilizing his brash approach as a counselor, helping other addicts in their recoveries. Through intimate stories and a trove of archival footage, NO NO: A DOCKUMENTARY brings Dock’s vibrant life to light, burnishing the legend and revealing the man behind it.

“Do to the Beast” is the first new album by The Afghan Whigs in over a decade and a half. Founded in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1988, the band has long stood out from its peers, with their savage, rapturous blend of hard rock, classic soul, and frontman Greg Dulli’s searing obsessions. The new album serves as both a homecoming -- it marks their return to Sub Pop, for whom the Whigs were the first signing from outside the label’s Northwest base -- and a glimpse into the future of one of the most acclaimed bands of the past thirty years.

End Of Summer Reggae Jam featuring Fortunate Youth w/ I-Resolution and many more West End Trading Co. Sat, Sept 13th • 4pm - 2am @DrinkAtWestEnd
Fortunate Youth is a collaboration of SoCal reggae standouts, compiled from the local and touring players of the region, the indie ethos brotherhood have built a following from the coast to cosat. With their last two indie releases debuting atop the Billboard Reggae Charts, the Youth have seen their club dates turn into festival stages, and national tour slots with the likes of Tribal Seeds, Dirty Heads and others. They join a who’s who of Southeast Rasta mainstays at West End Trading Co this month to finish out the summer in Irie fashion. Some words with the band... aXis: How did the SoCal reggae scene influence your sound in the studio and onstage? Dan: I don’t know where it all started, but in the beginning in the South Bay I listened to Tomorrows Bad Seeds all the time. Started to listen to other bands throughout Southern California like Tribal Seeds from San Diego. And of course Slightly Stoopid. And there’s the old school bands like Ghetto Fabulosos. Travis and I listened to that one album of theirs non-stop in high school. aXis: There seem to be other influences in the sound? Dan: Oh yeah definitely. We listen to a lot of Motown and Funk. We also really love People Under the Stairs. Hip Hop influences us a great deal. aXis: So you guys switch up instruments on stage? Dan: Well it’s pretty much who was on what instrument at the time the song was written. I don’t want to learn a part on keyboard that Corey wrote just so I can stay on that instrument. So its all pretty natural. aXis: How deep are those rasta roots? Dan: You know when we first started out we didn’t say alright lets start a reggae band. We all just picked up instruments and this is the music that came naturally. As far as Rastafarianism goes, we definitely believe in some of those teachings, but we dont hold those beliefs. So no we dont feel any pressure. We respect all religions, but we know roots music obviously stems from Rastafarianism.

aXis: Anything specific you are looking forward to coming back home after the Fall tour? Sleeping in my bed and watching HBOGo and Netflix. I’ll probably get around to writing some new songs I’ve been tinkering with. I live a simple, pathetic life.
aXis: How would you best describe your music? I typically say “Southern Roots” when asked to categorize my sound. That’s as close as I can get to a genre since it’s an amalgamation of many styles. To name a few-- soul, rock & roll, folk, gospel, blues, country, zydeco, funk, rhythm & blues and Afro-Cuban jazz.

aXis: If an alien landed in front of the band van, and asked how you guys would describe Roadkill Ghost Choir? It sounds like a box of triscuits. Everyone loves delicious triscuit crackers. Others have described it as spacey, folky, rock music. Aliens don’t like space music because they’ve heard it all. They’re sick of it. Aliens wouldn’t like our music but they might like triscuit crackers.

aXis: The Roadkill sound has some dire twists and turns, fitting of a Cormac McCarthy novel. What helped to influence this sound, and storytelling? Cormac McCarthy is actually a big influence for my writing. He’s completely brutal. Musical influences, to name a few, are Radiohead, anything Gram Parson’s related, The Boss, Dylan, Wilco, Boards of Canada and Kurt Vile. Lately, we’ve been listening to the new The War On Drugs, Sun Kil Moon and Angel Olsen records. They’re pretty great.

Cypress Grove Park in Holden Heights. A gathering place for a variety of folks and sports, even Cricket, plus the train track runs right by it. I love a train track. The Smiling Bison on the 1st Thursday of each month, which is when I host my singer songwriter series. aXis: Who would you consider a real life hero? Medgar Evers, a leader of the civil rights movement in my hometown of Jackson, MS. He was gunned down in his carport in 1963 only hours after President Kennedy’s speech on national television in support of civil rights. In his arms was a bundle of t-shirts that said “Jim Crow Must Go.” aXis: If you could be any animal or insect, what would you be and why? Dolphins seem pretty happy.

Buddy Nielsen: “Musically, it’s just completely different than anything we’ve done before; it’s a new attitude and a new approach. I knew we were gonna lose some fans along the way, but I also knew we weren’t. So hopefully we gain more fans than we lose.” aXis: You’re bringing a heavier, edgier style, yet a more positive lyrical vibe. How did that develop? Nielsen: “I’m just in a different spot mentally and in my life and I just made a conscious decision to not live in that mindset and that’s sort of what the records about, urging people to do the same. It just got a lot moodier and a lot deader. I enjoy what we’ve done in the past but I think this is a higher quality songwriting.” aXis: So why the departure from the sound, and not going with ‘what got you here’? our music to be nostalgic. I don’t want to play songs from when I was 18 years old. I have nothing in common with that and I don’t make music to make money, so I don’t have any interest in that. You have to find a line between the people that pay to see you and the casual ones. That’s one of the hardest things to do, for most bands. Most bands that just make enough money it doesn’t matter; ah we’ll just play some songs we don’t care about. We don’t really care. We’re trying not to be combative with our audience but we also want to let them know that if you’re not with the change, there’s no point in fighting it because you don’t really have a say over what we’re doing. It’s not your music. aXis: As you keep growing as a musican and a person, what do you foresee in the near future? Nielsen: “The next one I think it’s going to be for people that don’t like the heaviness of this record, they’re just not going to like it. It’ll be way more of that. That’s what we’re interested in doing. We’re not trying to be the biggest band in the world anymore. It’s more specifically about making music that we want to make. It makes it more fun.” Read More: Senses Fail’s Buddy Nielsen Talks Musical Transition, Fall Tour + More | http://noisecreep.com/ senses-fail-buddy-nielsen-musical-transition-fall-tour-more/?trackback=tsmclip

@CANVSORL @ORLANDOTECH @ORLANDOSTARTUP @AMPERSANDSCHOOL ORLANDO TECH WEEK Sept 27th - Oct 3rd OrlandoTech.org
THE INNOVATION
ORRETT G. DAVIS Orlando Tech Association | Executive Director Why Orlando? Why now? The Orlando tech community, like the entire region, is in the process of creating its identity. Pieces that were missing in the startup ecosystem are now being filled with the help of organizations like Orlando Tech, Canvs, Indienomicon and The Iron Yard. As a whole, the community is due for a period of explosive growth over the next few years. What trait would you want people in and beyond the community to know you for? I’m passionate about growing Orlando into a startup and tech hub. I’d like to be known as an advocate for Orlando’s startup community.
What would people in the tech community know you for? I’m best known as the Executive Director for the Orlando Tech Association, a non-profit set up to help connect, promote, and foster the growth of tech companies in Orlando. OTA runs one of the largest startup & tech focused meetup groups in the Southeast, with over 1700+ members and 250+ monthly attendees. I’m also known as the lead organizer for Startup Weekend Orlando and curator of the Orlando Startup Digest. One idea that you can divulge that you or someone in your circle has developed? We’re working on several community initiatives to further help break down silos within the tech community. Be on the look out for more hackathons, panels, workshops and events around health-tech, gaming, arts and other intersecting industries.
LIST
One idea you wish you wish you had been the one to develop? The Bungalower. I really love the hyper-local focus around engaging people with the communities they live in. How do you see Orlando’s tech community 5 years from now? I’m really excited to see the Orlando tech community mature and for the city to gain more recognition for its tech, gaming, and health industries. In the next 5 years, I’m looking forward to seeing widely successful startups grow, exit, and reinvest into the community. What are you listening to while working these days? Hype Machine’s ‘Most Popular Tracks.’
“Imagination is not only the uniquely human capacity to envision that which is not, and therefore the fount of all invention and innovation. In its arguably most transformative and revelatory capacity, it is the power to that enables us to empathize with humans whose experiences we have never shared.” J. K. Rowling
CHRISTINE ORTIZ Ampersand School | Executive Director Why Orlando? Why now? Orlando is home for me, having gone to middle and high school in the area. I’m excited to be back and helping make the city one I enjoy living and working in. What product or business would people in the tech community know you for? I’m the founder of Ampersand School - an innovative k-12 independent school located in Longwood. What trait would you want people in and beyond the community to know you for? As Howard Fuller says “Mr. Say ain’t nothin’ - Mr. Do is THE MAN.” I want to be known for taking action. One idea that you can divulge that you or someone in your circle has developed? We’re in the early stages of launching a tech accelerator for high school students that replaces a year of their academic programs. Super excited about that.
One idea you wish you wish you had been the one to develop? I was a year ahead of Drew Houston at MIT and spent a lot of time partying at his fraternity. Every time I use Dropbox I wish I would have joined that team early on! How do you see Orlando’s tech community in 5 years? I think we’ve been growing on an exponential curve, and in 5 years we’ll have hit that inflection point and all the groundwork we’ve been laying will start to bear fruit. I see us having our own distinct take on what a tech community is, and the rest of the country will start to take notice. What are you listening to while working these days? Spotify’s ‘Summer Mix Playlist.’

@ECHOINTERACTION @PHYKENMEDIA @BUNGALOWER
KUNAL PATEL Phyken Media
CARLOS CARBONELL Echo Interaction Group | CEO Why Orlando? Why now? I am originally from Panama City, Panama a cosmopolitan, diverse city. Now considered the wealthiest Central American country, and a hub for international commerce. I lived in Miami from the age of 14 on, as it was developing into the incredible world-class city it is now. I draw parallels between those two cities and Orlando. Orlando has all the components (diversity, energy, youth, education, entrepreneurship, low cost of living) to achieve that world-class status. What business would people in the tech community know you for? I own Echo Interaction Group, a mobile development company. We recently developed the Sunrail application receiving great media recognition, and we are in discussions with FDOT to have it become the official app.We have developed over 60 apps for government, private and nonprofit clients including the Florida State House of Representatives, Florida Hospital, USDA, Orange County Public Library, and others. I am also a founding board member and president of the Orlando Tech Association. What trait would you want people in and beyond the community to know you for? As a connector. Having been in this area for a long time, I’ve been involved in many non-profit boards, community initiatives, and have met a lot of great people in different industries and communities. I hope to be seen as a leader in the tech, LGBT and Hispanic communities, and to serve as a bridge between those groups and the community at large. A lot of us don’t realize sometimes how important a seemingly random connection can be.
Why Orlando? Why now? Right now, the feeling is definitely that the next 50 years of the city is being established today. Geographically it may be a big area but the circles of connections are very small to where truly 1 person can make a difference. That you can bring some product, service or initiative to the attention of everyone. What product or business would people in the tech community know you for? Likely video games. I lead Phyken Media, an indie game development studio based in Downtown Orlando. This also lead to co-founding Indienomicon, a rapidly growing community of indie game developers and fans.We have meetups on the 1st Thursday of the month @ 6:30 at the Melrose Center. It’s tons of fun and open to everyone. You meet game developers, play new, never before seen games, and give input and suggestions before they come out. I also operate Phykentech a technology infrastructure company which can really help any organization looking to implement a tech based project.Whether its servers, software, wi-fi or even if you’re searching for a unique solution. What trait would you want people in and beyond the community to know you for? Certainly I can only hope that I’m friendly, fun & someone who loves creating interesting new links between industries. Community building truly is joy of mine, and I think it often leads to the best kind of new business opportunities.
“The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it.” Michelangelo Why Orlando, why now? Orlando is an amazing city with lots of opportunity for everyone. We’re big enough where it’s interesting to do creative things and there are enough people to support them, but not so big that you get lost in the noise.
One idea that you or someone in your circle has developed? We are in the process of developing a content management platform that also allows for rapid deployment of mobile apps paired with iBeacons. We have started development and are in the process of obtaining funding for that venture (hopefully much closer by the time this issue prints!). Although I will keep Echo going, I am very passionate about this new company.
What business would the tech community know you for? Bungalower.com What trait would you want people in and beyond the community to know you for? Honestly, as corny as it sounds, that I love this city. Every year I am here I become more and more of an Orlando fan.
One idea you wish you wish you had been the one to develop? Yes! It is a ridiculously simple app that allows for zero character, one touch messaging, which received $1.5 million in backing (by some of the most recognized investors, Pete Cashmore from Mashable and one of the heads of Uber). Seems like a stupid app, but I suspect there is something big coming later. How do you see Orlando’s tech community 5 years from now? Although it will certainly be more mature than what it is today, in 5 years there will have been several exits (from founders who have sold or had their startups get acquired). This will pump millions in the economy, hopefully by way of those founders funding other startups. Our tech community, by then will also be different than other regions, in its concentration in very specific technology types (ex: skewing toward mobile startups on the software side, but spin offs from the simulation industry that may capitalize on wearables that appeal to a consumer market, along with healthcare tech companies sprung from various healthtech incubators started by Florida Hospital, maybe Orlando Health, and others from Lake Nona Medical City). Maybe we’ll see our own Disney-led tech incubator or one of the other parks. What are you listening to while working these days? Hozier, Sam Smith, Naughty Boy, Sia.
One idea that you or someone in your circle has developed? Most recently a game development tool for remote teams. Sometimes not everyone can afford an office or place to make games, so we came across a local project being developed called DevClan that creates a lot of project management tools for making games with spread out teams. It’s got a way to go, but its a start. One idea you wish you wish you had been the one to develop? I’m involved in a lot of circles, so this is a toughie. I’m a really excited by wearable technology, and there’s an Orlando based company FreeWavez, which is wireless headphones, but also fitness monitoring. How do you see the tech community 5 years from now? I believe we will have multiple success stories of companies born, grown and actively thriving here in Orlando. We will become better known around the US and world for our unique skill sets in Technology, Gaming, Simulation, and as the best place to start a new idea. What are you listening to while working these days? Lots of ‘80s music.Though I left the ‘80s still quite young, I will always remember what the older cool kids were listening too, and naturally its a good way to transport back my childhood. I recently watched Guardians of the Galaxy and the ‘Awesome Mix Vol. 1’ is great, as well as the soundtrack from Halt and Catch Fire on AMC which is about the computer industry in the ‘80s.
One idea that you can divulge that you or someone in your circle has developed? I think the most recent idea was the creation of a digital main street. I saw the great work that all our main streets were doing but realized that the support that was being given to retail businesses was not available to tech businesses. That needed to change and it has with the help of some great tech leaders and the Mayor’s office we were able to create Orlando Tech. One idea you wish you had been the one to think of? Foursquare. I think they have some amazing local data and are going to start doing more and more cool things with that.
MATT BROFFMAN Bungalower.com
How do you see Orlando’s tech community 5 years from now? The tech leader in the south east and one of the biggest industries in Orlando. What are you listening to while working these days? Other people’s conversations at Canvs (true story)!

JEREMY SCHEINBERG TROBO | Co-Founder Why Orlando, why now? Orlando is really exciting right now and the community is so incredibly supportive. We have people spreading the word for us because they are passionate about what we are trying to do and they want us to be successful. We have great friends in the Orlando Tech community who try to connect us with others who can help and are just there to support us. I don’t know if you would get that somewhere else. What business would the tech community know you for? I am the Co-Founder, along with Chris Harden, of TROBO the Storytelling Robot a talking plush toy and interactive storytelling app that inspires kids 2-7 to learn more about the science and engineering in the world around them.
What trait would you want people in and beyond the community to know you for? I get my inspiration from my kids. I love how my children are amazed by the little things around them. That’s what inspires me to want to give them (and others) a toy that will keep them curious. One idea that you can divulge that you or someone in your circle has developed? Putting the child in the stories. When Chris came up with that, it really helped to capture their imagination. They loved seeing themselves in the stories and it made them more excited to learn. One idea you wish you had thought of? 3D Printing. I can’t get enough of it. I love watching something get printed - toys, gears, food! That’s the engineer in me. I can’t wait to see where 3D Printing goes, especially when it makes its way into the home!
How do you see Orlando’s tech community 5 years from now? I think it could easily look like Austin’s tech community with strong small, medium and larger companies but with its own unique Orlando vibe. I think you will still have that strong community where everyone supports everyone else because they know how hard it is to build a new tech business and that there are no shortcuts. What are you listening to while working these days? Chris and I both listen to a lot of Kickstarter podcasts from Richard Bliss. They are full of great information and will (hopefully) help us be successful. When I need a break from Kickstarter, I listen to the Risk! podcast (Gregg Pollack got me into those and I can’t stop listening to the stories!)

BLAIRE MARTIN Florida Angel Nexus | Director
JACK ELKINS Orlando Magic | Business Innovations Why Orlando, why now? For me, this answer is easy. I was born and raised here. The shift we see towards entrepreneurialism and the different ways we see companies collaboratively innovating is happening across the country. With the development and tech talent we have here, as well as the strength of collaboration we have in this town, it’s a natural fit that Orlando would be a leader in this movement. What business would the tech community know you for? Downtown Credo, Orlando Magic and sports and tech innovation in general. What trait would you want people in and beyond the community to know you for? The best compliment anyone could give me is to say I’m authentic. One idea that you can divulge that you or someone in your circle has developed? It’s been fun to work with my colleagues and Florida Hospital on innovation labs in Orlando. One idea you wish you had been the one to think of? I wish I had all of the ideas from the last Starter Studio class. How do you see Orlando’s tech community 5 years from now? I see Orlando tech as the driver for our entrepreneurial growth, our economic growth, and a fun source for attracting talent. What are you listening to while working these days? I listen to sports radio, my favorite authors, or The 1975, my fiance’s favorite, when riding around with her. But at the innovation lab, we usually listen to the classics.
Why Orlando, why now? Orlando is a worldwide brand with diverse assets that incite creativity and disruption. Our community is striving and is uniting to promote success in technology, research, entrepreneurship, and venture investing. Together we are dedicated to achieving critical mass.
What trait would you want people in the community to know you for? Forming powerful connections and promoting education.
What business would the tech community know you for? The Florida Angel Nexus (FAN) fosters Florida’s angel and entrepreneurial communities by providing services and resources to efficiently launch, administer, and connect quality investment entities. FAN is a nexus connecting dispersed entities, high potential companies, investors, mentors, and community resources. Only a few states have more accredited investors than Florida. The intellectual and financial capital available here is immense and will facilitate taking companies and our region to the next level.
One idea you wish you had thought of? I’m continually impressed by the investment of time, knowledge, and money leaders are making in our community. Everyone has a role to play and a way they can contribute. The raising tide lifts all ships.
One idea that you can divulge that you have helped develop? FAN’s strategy to promote critical mass.
How do you see Orlando’s tech community 5 years from now? I see Orlando tech as the driver for our entrepreneurial growth, our economic growth, and a fun source for attracting talent.
Listening to while working these days? Extremely diverse Pandora stations keep it interesting.
DARREN WENDROFF CareSpotter | Founder Why Orlando, why now? I’m the founder of CareSpotter, an online marketplace that connects families directly with professional caregivers.
What trait would you want people in the community to know you for? Haha, I’m happy with whatever people notice, but perhaps my ability to get things done. I think I’m often underestimated.
What business would the tech community know you for? Each day more than 10,000 Americans turn 65, and by the year 2030, one in every three Floridians will be 65 or older. Professional caregivers are paid near poverty wages and are in short supply to address our rapidly aging population. CareSpotter helps families find the perfect caregiver and saves families 40 to 50 percent versus hiring through an agency. The caregivers also make up to 50 to 70 percent more, creating a more efficient marketplace. Plus our designer Mark Bunker lives here, and that guy is amazing.
One idea that you helped develop? We’re pretty busy, but as a side project we’re developing a productivity app based on the Pomadoro technique. One idea you wish you had thought of? Pretty obvious, but Twitter is genius. So simple and so powerful. How do you see Orlando in 5 years? It will be the top tech community in the Southeast, all the necessary ingredients are here. Listening to while working these days? Mainly classic and jazz, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck ect. I also love a site called FocusAtWill.

@FLANGELNEXUS @ORANGEBMEDIA @CODESCHOOL
DAVID LAIETTA Orange Blossom Media Why Orlando? Why now? Orlando is growing as a hub for businesses and entrepreneurs, especially in the tech and medical sectors. It’s an exciting time and place, as those involved now are directly shaping the future in more tangible ways than they may otherwise be able to in more established cities. What product or business would people in the tech community know you for? I run a web development firm, Orange Blossom Media, and am lead organizer of WordCamp and WordPress Orlando. What trait would you want people in and beyond the community to know you for? I hope to be known for my willingness to roll up my sleeves and dive in to help new projects and events, as well as assist others. I regularly offer free consulting and even some work for community members that are having trouble with their websites or businesses.
KAPONO CURRY Florida Angel Nexus | Operations Mgr Why Orlando? Why now? The @Citybeautiful has so many great things going on it really boggles the mind. Consider this, how many cities have the second largest university in the country 20 minutes from downtown that is the home of the current national champion cyber security team, and a programming team that consistently places in the top 50 worldwide, two giant amusement parks employing thousands of artists, an international convention destination drawing 3.6 million international guests, 25 universities and colleges, a digital creative industry with explosive growth, a cultural makeup where 43.2% of us self-identify as “other”, all wrapped up in a city that the Globalization and World Cities Research network considers more important to the global economy than cities like Brazilia, Las Vegas, Seville, and the port of Spain? None, that’s how many. What business would people in the tech community know you for? I’m proud to work for the Florida Angel Nexus. People within the tech community would know me for my work on the FAN investment process in regards to pre-investment due diligence and financial analysis.
One idea that you or someone in your circle has developed? We’re creating a quick onboarding solution for people who don’t need full web projects, but instead need smaller fixes that may only take a few hours at most. It’s a lot harder to find someone willing to work with a new client for such a short amount of time, as the ROI is not usually very good. Automation and well defined processes and scope is what’s making this a more attractive model for small businesses and consultants alike. One idea you wish you wish you had been the one to develop? The idea of curated physical items mailed to you (Birchbox, Loot Crate, IndieBox, Bungalower, etc) is really cool. It’s a powerful way to share things that interest you with others, while potentially reaching a very large audience if you offer great products for a good price. Recurring revenue modeled subscription services like this are going to be more prevalent in successful businesses over time.
“The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.” George Bernard Shaw
What trait would you want people in the community to know you for? Finding elegant, innovative solutions to complicated problems in chaotic environments. When the game is on the line, I enjoy being the ace in the hole.
Why Orlando, why now? Because that’s where I live. What business would the tech community know you for? I created Envy - a web development consultancy, Code School - an online school that teaches programming, Starter Studio - Orlando’s first technical accelerator, BarCamp Orlando - An event that brings the tech community together, and Orlando Tech Events Newsletter - which aggregates all of Orlando’s tech events into one list.
One idea that you or someone in your circle has developed? There is room at the table for everyone when it comes to Orlando’s technology ecosystem. There are strong players in Orlando and Central Florida, we all share the same purpose-driven mission and it is very exciting to see the collaboration within Orlando’s investment and technology community.
What trait would you want people in the community to know you for? Creative. I take great happiness in creating things that educate people, bring people together, and help them enjoy the work they do.
One idea you wish you wish you had been the one to develop? I’m impressed with how quickly the established power players were able to recognize the growing Orlando tech movement and integrate them into Orlando’s vision for the future of Downtown.
One idea that you can divulge that you or someone in your circle has developed? I can’t take credit for the term, but at Envy and Code School once a month we have a day of Betterment. This is where we put down all our normal work and spend a full day working on something that makes us better. Could be reading a book, taking a typing course, building a side project, or trying a new technology.
How do you see Orlando’s tech community 5 years from now? In 5 years Orlando will be recognized as the center of innovation in the Southeast. Orlando has so many factors in it’s favor and we are only starting to see all of the many disparate threads that make up the fabric of our city weaving together. The rate of change we’ve seen in just the last year is amazing, I’m excited to see what everyone can do in the next 5 years. What are you listening to while working these days? That’s a good question, I’ve been spending alot of time on my SoundCloud Stream lately. Everything from Dr. Khan, Diplo, Flogging Molly, Hot Chip, Damian Marley, Electric Six, Fitz and the Tantrums, Foxy Shazam, Friendly Fires, Girl Talk, Clipse, Handsome Boy Modeling School, Less Than Jake, MF Doom, NOFX, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, the Black Keys, Bonde do Rolê, Dj Snake, Riff Raff, and so much more. I listen to a very wide spectrum of music so it’s hard to pin me down to a single genre.
How do you see the tech community 5 years from now? I assume that Orlando’s tech community in five years will have grown many times larger than it has in the past five years. We’re already becoming well known for our entrepreneurship in Orlando, and if the city continues working hand in hand with the tech community, I can see a bright future for us all. What are you listening to while working these days? Scores for video games and movies make great background noise while working, without becoming too distracting. I’ve been all over the Journey soundtrack as of late.
One idea you wish you had been the one to think of? Reddit.
GREGG POLLACK Code School | Founder
How do you see Orlando’s tech community 5 years from now? I’d love to see three as many big tech companies, four times as many events, five times as many startup companies, and six times as many investment capitol groups. What are you listening to while working these days? I love listening to the Radio on Spotify.

Everyone wants to to make awesome things happen in Orlando right now so the resources, connections and excitement is incredibly valuable for entrepreneurs in getting their businesses to market. What business would people in the tech community know you for? This last year I have been leaning hard into the tech community for my own startup Shoflo, a communications and scheduling platform for live events. So fun! What trait would you want people in and beyond the community to know you for? I don’t know. I would hope that people know I want to help other startups get connected and get to market. It’s hard and lonely as an entrepreneur, but it does not have to be. One idea that you or someone in your circle has developed? PitchTech! Literally pitching is so vital to making your ideas a reality. We should have a place where tech companies can come and pitch their Tech... and then Tech their pitch.

Why Orlando, why now? Orlando has had a strong technology community for a long time, but not until about 3 or 4 years ago did it start to get organized. With the rise of organizations like Orlando Tech Meetup, Starter Studio, CoLab, and Venture Pitch Orlando we have begun to strengthen relationship between tech folks.
One idea you wish you wish you had been the one to develop? Tech accelerators and colllab work spaces... I love them! How do you see Orlando’s tech community 5 years from now? SPECIAL FLA nCAA
& SUNSHINE STATE NFL PREVIEW!
by Ashley Burns @MayorBurnsy
MIAMI DOLPHINS
TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS
JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS
Miami Dolphins Projected: 8-8
Tampa Bay Buccaneers Projected: 7-9
Jacksonville Jaguars Projected: 2-14
I don’t care if the Dolphins (my favorite team if you’re new to the party) go 15-1 this season and destroy everyone in the NFL Playoffs en route to a Super Bowl victory. When the next season begins, I will predict them to go 8-8.When I die in several hundred years, my tombstone will read, “The Dolphins will go 8-8.” Never has a team been built to be so average year in and year out, and the Dolphins are led by the most average QB imaginable in Ryan Tannehill. I want to be optimistic about the Dolphins for once in my life – I actually like Tannehill a lot – but the moment that Dion Jordan was suspended for PEDs, I got a head start on a season of shaking my head. Note to young, underwhelming players out there, especially those of you that were drafted by a team that hilariously traded up for you: If you suck in your rookie season and people call you undersized and weak, don’t juice up until you’re 15-pounds heavier and show up to camp like you had a growth spurt. Roger Goodell may be an A-hole, but he and his judges, juries and executioners all have working eyes and pee-testers.
When it comes to winning in the NFL, I believe that you need to be set at two very important positions – QB and offensive line. I know, really hot take there. The Bucs are set at neither of these positions, and that is shocking from the QB standpoint, because all a guy has to do is throw to Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans, or check down to the Muscle Hamster, and that sounds like the easiest thing in the world. I think Lovie Smith is going to be great for the Bucs over the next few seasons, before he’s fired and immediately hired by another team, but if he hasn’t learned by now how important the O-line is after giving Jay Cutler PTSD in Chicago, then what the hell is the point of paying this guy a ton of money for an average team?
The No. 1 question that everyone asks me as the world’s foremost BORTologist is “When will Blake Bortles start for the Jaguars?” Look, I watched every Jags preseason game, which is incredible because I’ve never given a rat’s ass about Florida’s NFL farm team, and Bortles looks like a born leader ready to win and fulfill my destiny for him as the greatest NFL QB in history. But I cannot stress enough the fact that I really hope the Jags stay true to the plan and do not let him play this year. Let my BORT sit and learn, and let that stable of great, young receivers – and maybe even Justin Blackmon, if he can pull his head out of his ass – learn the system with Chad Henne taking all the hits.Yes, Jags fans will be pissed that their team spent a No. 3 pick on a guy who isn’t playing in 2014, but as a Dolphins fan, and going back to Dion Jordan, trust me when I say that it’s better than a No. 3 pick just flat out sucking. Look, we learned a lot from Blaine Gabbert’s time in Jacksonville, and Bortles is no Gabbert. Many years from now, an alien race will discover our then-barren planet, ravaged by nuclear fallout and the perils of man’s hubris, and a rover will discover a small book with a shield and three letters on it. In that book that will tell tales of the NFL’s best days, one page will read: “Blake Bortles was the greatest guy to ever play the game.” And the tentacled Cyclops of Zornox-12 will look at his friend and say, “Yo dude, good thing they sat that dude a year so he could learn.”

BURNSY ON CAMPUS
Our Resident Homer Ashley Burns Offers his Biased Opinion on FLA’s Finest Programs
Last year marked the first time in several years, which is practically centuries to the common sports fan, that football fans in Florida had something to be happy about. Thanks to UCF’s huge win in the Fiesta Bowl, and whatever bowl game that Florida State won after the fact, there was a renewed sense of joy and elation heading into this year, even if the state’s three NFL teams still combined to eat a huge garbage bag filled with poop-covered dildos. Happiness and success help build promise across the board, though, and I can’t believe that I’m actually writing a Florida football preview that is filled with optimism for once. With the college season already under way, I actually have a jumping off point for reference, so let’s get into the NCAA football action first, so we can scientifically determine which of our favorite state programs will have the best chance of cracking into this new, even-dumber-than-the-BCS playoff system that is going to favorite the bigger schools now more than ever. First up, the reigning state champs…
UCF Knights Projected: 10-2, Current: 0-1
The reigning Fiesta Bowl Champions learned the hard way that you can’t play two quarters against a team that’s playing four. While Penn State’s fans are probably fired up and excited after that opening win, they should bottle that emotion in mason jars and store it in their basements until next month, when they can open them up again, take a whiff and remember the joy they had before they lost 3 of the next 4. PSU is not that good, and had Justin Holman played at least three quarters – or Pete DiNovo not thrown the ball away on a terrible decision to go for it on 4th and goal – it’d be UCF fans saying,“Blake who?” before cuddling up with their Bortles body pillows at night. That said, if UCF’s offense can give the defense any time to rest, and the offensive line can stop jumping like children when they see bees, this is a team that’s going to be just fine in that weak AAC.
FSU Seminoles Projected: 11-1, Current: 1-0
A lot of people think that Jameis “Who the F*ck Steals Crab Legs from Publix?”Winston and the ‘Noles are going to steamroll their way to another perfect season and National Championship, before the Buffalo Bills draftWinston to make EJ Manuel feel like an even bigger loser. That’s not at all out of the question, but I’m staring at that Oct. 30 game against Louisville on ESPN and thinking,“Yeah, that’ll be the one that catches them off guard.”
Florida Gators Projected: 6-6, Current: 0-0
As we saw on Aug. 30, even God does not want the Gators to play football. It’s always hard to tell how good or bad Florida will be, so I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt in predicting that they’ll win all of their games against unranked opponents, leading up to that Nov. 29 matchup with FSU, which will lay 100 points on Will Muschamp’s crap factory. Speaking of Muschamp, remember when Florida hired him away from Texas and all of the Gators fans were like,“Muschampionship, bro!”That was a fun time.
Miami Hurricanes Projected: 8-4, Current: 0-0
Like the Gators, the Canes are always a mystery. But I’ll always give the fake ass fans of THE U a ton of credit for the way that they dump all over fans of other programs before the season begins, as they pretend like a team’s previous accomplishments mean nothing. If the NCAA had a trophy for hilariously arrogant preseason senses of entitlement, it would go to Hurricanes fans every year. Sorry Alabama fans, but your team actually wins big games sometimes, so you all deserve to act like colossal D-bags every now and then.
USF Bulls Projected: 7-5, Current: 1-0
People think that when it comes to the Bulls that I’m an eternal hater and won’t ever give them credit, but that’s some BS. Unlike a lot of fans on both sides of this rivalry that USF pathetically tried to sweep under the rug, I enjoy it and have a lot of fun talking football with the few USF fans that I can stand talking to (in fairness, I also don’t like talking to most delusional UCF fans). So I’m glad that they’re all fired up after that shaky opening win over Western Carolina – just get on the bus, just get on the bus – but there’s a lot of football to be played, and Marlon Mack won’t be running for 60+ yard touchdowns like he’s Tecmo Bowl Bo Jackson every week. Still, it’s really great for USF fans to have a player they can get behind until he doesn’t do well and they all turn on him and demand that he be kicked out of school.
